2 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 03/21/2019

My sierra developed a noise on deceleration. Took it to the GMC dealer and was told it had a worn cam. $5500 to repair, $7750 to replace engine. I knew that a worn cam would cause lifter noise all the time so that was wrong info. Upon further investigation I found out this truck has active fuel management. What happened was a failure of the system. It should be noted that this truck always had high oil consumption. I deactivated the active fuel management system. The truck runs on all 8 cylinders, is completely quiet and no longer uses oil. It is better than new. I also found hundreds of complaints similar to my and paid for expensive repairs. This active fuel management is nothing more than a scam to falsely increase fuel mileage and to rip off customers when it goes bad. It can be deactivated with a $175 chip.

3 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500

Low oil pressure light came on due to excessive oil consumption while driving. Engine burned 5 quarts of oil in under 3000 miles. 105k miles on 5. 3 liter v8. Dealer said typical for this engine to have carbon buildup and needs new piston rings and pistons. Also driver side door lock actuator replaced and window switches.

4 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2010 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 06/03/2016

At ~ 54,000 miles, the vehicle experienced increased oil consumption and lost compression on two cylinders. This vehicle has only been subjected to highway mileage of about 30 miles/day on average and has been properly maintained. The damage was to the extent that cylinders had to be replaced and it took the dealership 25 days to repair. A coworker had the same engine issue on his Chevrolet silverado with the same 5. 3 liter engine at ~ 45,000 miles. A cursory search of the internet will reveal that this is not an isolated incident. The overwhelming majority of owners comments that I have researched believe that it is caused by the active fuel management system failing to properly lubricate components when the engine cycles between 4 and 8 cylinders. Gm disavowed any knowledge of these incidents when contacted. The service department of my local GMC dealership disavowed any knowledge also although I presented them over a dozen pages of gm owners group web pages with description of the same engine failures. However, when their mechanic was questioned as to whether he was repairing the problem or merely exchanging damaged parts, he replied "it won't happen again, we do this all the time". This tells me that my vehicle is not the first that they have seen with this problem.

5 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2009 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 02/10/2016

I have the engine with active fuel management and as I was driving down the instate the engine goes in to failure mode. Lifter collapsed tearing the cam up as well. Spent about 3000 dollars having issue fixed with new gm parts only to have it fail again. Called gm and they said they were aware of the problem but it's from faulty parts and it was the customers problem. The engine smokes bad and burns oil and raw gas sits on the piston without being burned off properly.

9 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2007 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 02/07/2014

I had a 2007 GMC sierra. Throughtout the life of this vehicle I've ask why the 5. 3l motor burns a quart of oil or more during oil changes. Constantly ask multiple dealers to inspect and they continued to state that's just this engine and would never mark paperwork to check. Always stated it will burn a little oil in between oil changes. I continued to believe this as other owners of this vehicle type told me same information. On or around Feb 7, 2014 engine dropped cyclinders and lost most power to vehicle while on interstate. I'm concerned as it lost power and dramatically slowed but also that I've had a faulty product since buying and no recall was issued. I maintenanced this vehicle properly. After telling me the cost to replace the 2 cyclinders or engine I had a decision to make. This engine should be recalled as it has major problems. Unfortunately gm didn't recall the engine and fix it properly within my warranty timeframe. I even bought extended warranty. Now I've had to buy new truck which I wouldn't have bought if engine was still running in 2007 GMC truck. These "eco" engines need to be reviewed.

10 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2007 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 10/05/2012

70,000. Miles low oil light comes on, just had my oil changed 1000 mile before. Took in to gm dealer they told me oil pan gasket was bad. Repaired. 1000 miles later low oil light came on, took back to dealership. No issue found. Truck just burning oil! the truck keeps using 2 to 3 quarts of oil dealer will not do anything. Call gm they advise to go to dealership and do oil consumption test. Did this taking it back to dealership every 500 miles to have oil checked. Used 2-1/2 quarts of oil between oil changes. Told dealer this was not normal to fix my truck. Dealer advised gm would not fix my truck because this is normal usage. It is now using about 3 quarts between oil changes. Gm told me to go back to dealer to have another oil consumption test done. We see they hide problems well, as was the last recall. How about getting them to address or fix this issue. They are still advertising the afm engine , and raising the normal oil useage from a quart to 2 quarts. As anyone can see with the latest recalls they will hide or not acknowledge the problem. They are worried about their bottom line. Not the customer. See how many changes and service bullitons have been issued due to this oil consumption issue. My gm case # 71-1118075589. They tend to close these case numbers quick. And then they assign you another case number each time you call customer service to hide the fact they have problems. When dealer does oil consumption I find they do not show anything back to gm or attach a record to your VIN #. Last couple of time I spoke to gm customer service, they had no record of me ever having an oil consumption problem. And my last case number did not show up in their system. All you have to do to see the problem is "google " gm 5. 3 oil consumtion problem. You will find more than a few complaints.

11 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2007 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 02/15/2011

#sb-10-06-01-008 (problem) I am concerned with our safety due to the mechanical motor problem with the cylinders. Gm warranty # 71-937499112 I have had oil consumption test done and they ordered parts and told me to bring it in. When bringing it in to "philips Buick GMC" fruitland park florida, I was told that I would be able to get a comparable vehichle in exchange while mine is worked on. I get their and they try to give me a compact SUV. I am 6'2", 200lbs. And drive a 2007 4 door Sierra 1500 that I use for my commercial business every day for work. They were aware of this. I shut my business down to half of what it was in order to be able to afford loosing my truck for a couple days to waranty repairs. I was told I would get a full sized truck or SUV. I still have to haul product for my business just to keep it 50% running for those couple days. I also have 4, 200+lbs guys to haul around for work as well, and a special needs daughter who needs the aditional space of a full sized vehichle. I paid over $40,000 for my truck. Its not my fault that I have a warranty issue and it has to be worked on. So my business, family, and self shouldnt be the one who is inconvienanced for a gm warranty issue. Gm needs to do what it takes to make this right. I spoke to gm and they told me to go rent one myself and pay myself. They said they would only give me $35 dollars a day for reimbursement. With this happening gm is making it impossible for me to work and get my truck fixed at the same time.

12 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2007 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 09/26/2009

The contact owns a 2007 GMC sierra. The contact stated that the vehicle was losing oil. The dealer wanted the contact to allow them to check the oil every 1000 to 3000 miles to diagnose the vehicles oil consumption. The manufacturer then told the contact that all gm vehicles use excessive amounts of oil. The contact was concerned about the excessive oil use and why he was not advised when the vehicle was purchased. The manufacturer sent the contact a letter stating that the vehicle was designed to use 1 quart of oil every 2000 miles. The failure mileage was 50000 and the current mileage was 70000.
