GMC Sierra 1500 owners have reported 878 problems related to power train (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of GMC Sierra 1500 based on all problems reported for the Sierra 1500.
My 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 experienced a premature transmission failure consistent with gm’s known 8-speed transmission defect. My safety and the safety of others were put at risk if/when the transmission occurs a temporary lockup which can/will cause the vehicle to stall on the highway, and potentially create a minor/major automobile incident if vehicle stalls. The vehicle was taken to dealership capital Chevrolet montgomery, al where dealership technician diagnosed/confirmed the issue along with pictures of internal transmission failed components as well as recommended resolution for fix. The vehicle has been inspected by my out-of-pocket expense extended warranty company endurance warranty services sub-contracted repair claims adjuster. No warning lamps, vehicle messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure were noticeable; the vehicle had multiple diagnostic scans prior to original sale and after sale to present no issues or trouble scans. The first issue appeared or was noticeable 12/08/2025. Gm has refused action by asserting warranty expiration despite widespread knowledge of this defect. The vehicle has been out of service since December 8, 2025.

The contact owns a 2025 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving 75 mph with the cruise control activated, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal, and the vehicle decelerated to 10 mph. In addition, the vehicle came to an abrupt stop independently. The contact’s upper body almost struck the front windshield. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that shortly afterwards, the vehicle resumed driving normally at 75 mph; however, the failure reoccurred after a short distance. The vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal and abruptly came to a stop. The vehicle then resumed driving normally. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact arrived at the residence, and the vehicle was towed to the dealer. The vehicle remained at the dealer awaiting a diagnostic test. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 7,800.

Less then 47 000 miles on truck, used for only city driving, no off road driving or rigorous travel. - engine malfunction and could have had catastrophic failure while traveling causing injury to myself or others. -car is inoperable, dealer recommend not to drive it due to safety concerns. -I have metal shavings in the oil, misfires, and a p0011 code. These match the known gm lifter/camshaft failure pattern. Vehicle started skipping check engine light turned on for cam shaft interrupter magnet. Gm has open recall for 2021-2025 engine however 2019 vehicle is still under investigation.
2018 GMC sierra started having shuddering/jerking/jumping problems at around 60k miles. This problem occurs while driving on straight aways, going uphill and while in drive at a stop sign/light. When the gas is accelerated the truck then hesitates and jerks/jumps. We have taken it to the GMC dealership and paid for the diagnostics and were informed “the problem wasn’t severe enough”. The truck has only been serviced by GMC dealership. So after failed attempts with GMC service department we have taken it to a local small auto shop and they automatically said it was the drive train and needed to be taken to a transmission shop. We have been gm owners for decades and are so disappointed in the service received from them.

My truck went into "limp" mode and had very little power. It was towed to the dealership where they diagnosed the issue as a bad solenoid causing the engine misfires. The solenoid was replaced, but the issue was not fixed. Now the dealership is stating the engine has bent lifters and the repairs will not be covered under the ongoing massive engine recall. The vehicle had the pico test on 9/17 and it "passed", but less than 3k miles later and the engine failed. This is a clear safety issue and well known by NHTSA and gm. Now I'm negotiating with the dealership to cover repairs and my truck has been gone nearly a month.

Just after merging from I-65 north to 264 east at 65 mph in louisville ky on November 14th, the display indicated to "press start" and the engine stalled. I was only able to get the vehicle about 3 inches off of the left side of the yellow line before running out of inertia. I was stuck there for 2 hours while waiting for a tow truck. The first truck could not lift my vehicle because with the engine off, the electric shifter would not move out of park. A second tow truck was called with dolly's and then a 3rd tow truck was required to block traffic. During this 2 hour period several cars swerved left of the yellow line and I was in fear for my life. The traffic was so heavy that I was trapped between the concrete median wall and the left lane. I called 911 to ask for a safety vehicle to shield me from traffic, but they never arrived as promised.
Catastrophic engine failure to due connecting rod bearings spun on the crankshaft damaging the crank and sending bearing material throughout the oil galleries.
My 2020 GMC sierra with a 5. 3l engine and 78,272 miles on the vehicle, experienced damaged lifters which also resulted in a damaged cam shaft. The total repair bill was $9,208. 86. While in the GMC dealership for repair, there were 2 other trucks - same model, same year, same engine - in for the same repair. When searching on-line, I found the recall for the GMC 6. 2l engine for similar issues. It is my opinion that the 5. 3l engine is experiencing the same types of issues. I have driven GMC trucks for almost 40 years and have never experienced these types of issues. I have been told by several people that it is related to the dynamic fuel management system and to fix the problem to disable the system to keep the truck in v8 mode. There are several solutions on line to make this happen. I am no engineer and only provide this as background information. From my perspective, it is clear that gm has a problem (whatever the root cause) with their 5. 3l engines.
My truck had engine failure while at the dealership getting new tires installed on 11/12/2025. When they started my truck they detected major knocking in my engine the 1st thing in the morning. It unsafe to drive they're telling me my engine needs to be replaced. My engine has 58,000 miles on it. There was no issues with my truck when I drop it off.
2026 GMC sierra elevation x31 with 3. 0 duramax diesel engine, 132-miles, thrust bearing 1. 53-mm out of tolerance requiring engine and turbo replacement. Engine build date 25219 (07 Aug 2025), vehicle assembly date August 2025, purchased 10 oct 2025, entered service for engine and turbo failure on 11 Nov 2025, returned 10 Jan 2026.
Transmission module went out at 20,989 miles.
My 2020 5. 3 l GMC at4 is experiencing loss of power with bucking & stalling. Cylinders are not activating when called check engine light is flashing, it starts rough and makes numerous noises at various speeds, as well as at idle. So I brought my vehicle to my local auto repair shop. Our mechanic found two failed fuel injectors and a failed throttle body. Then the loud knocks in my block failed an acoustic test. He also determined the lifters, push rods and camshaft are experiencing excessive wear. The afm system has failed! he warned me that further use of my motor (with only 42k miles on it) will cause a catastrophic failure. My research shows that these issues are becoming common of 5. 3 GMC motors. We searched the country for a rebuilt motor and found that none are available for the next several months. However, I was able to find a new motor at much greater cost. GMC has declined assistance at this time. My vehicle has no value as is, so I ordered the new gm engine. Without the dod system, these engines were designed to go well over 100,000 miles. I am a faithful GMC owner and none of my previous GMC trucks (2003, 2013, 2015, 2019) had such a major problem. Now the 2020's fuel saving system has failed and requires repairs that amount to half the value of my truck. When a full size truck stalls on the highway it's certainly life threatening.
First my torque converter went out, no warning lights only shaking wehn shifting, I got it replaced already it cost me $2400 second warning light service for brakes, traction and power steering come on and off. And sometimes truck doesn't brake well and steering wheel feels hard to drive, it has happened while on expressway with family. Third engine oil low add oil warning sign comes up alot and I have to add oil, engine has a rough idle now, also when I turn truck on smoke comes out while having a rough idle, recently it started knocking, I haven't moved the truck since than.
Intermittent shudder at 25-55 mph under light throttle (rumble-strip feel); 5-6 dealer attempts failed due to non-duplication; GMC corporate (case # 82769068] refused escalation. Safety risk: distracts from road, potential loss of control. TSB 22-na-182 is a known issue and dealer says they can’t repair without duplication.
My wife was driving at highway speeds with all are kids when the trucks motor suddenly loss all power all check engine lights illuminated and what I'm assuming had major engine failure causing rod knock.

On October 23rd at approximately 0900-0915 hours I arrived at a friends house located at [xxx] . As I normally do, I pulled up into the driveway which has a pretty significant incline. I shifted the column shifter into park, and turned off the vehicle via the push button ignition switch. The parking brake/hill brake system automatically engaged as per normal operation. I exited the vehicle and before I could shut the door, the vehicle began to roll backwards. The driver's side door hit me in the right shoulder which pushed me to my left and caused me to roll my left ankle due to the down slope of the driver way. While I felt immense pain in my right ankle, I was able to jump back into the truck and slam on the brakes, causing both rear wheels to lock up and skid in the driveway. I then turned back on the vehicle, noting that the transmission position was still in park, and the parking brake/hill brake was still engaged. I had to disengage the push button parking brake/hill-brake, shift the vehicle from park into drive to move back up the driveway. This time I ensured that the vehicle did not move after following the exact same steps. My truck under went an approximately 30 minute software "upgrade" approximately 2. 5 weeks ago. I believe there was an issue where the park sensor did not fully engage, leading the vehicle to believe it was still in an operational gear, however it does not explain how it was able to not only over-ride the parking/hill-brake itself, as well as allow me to shut the vehicle off and exit the vehicle. This safety hazard has caused me an injury that has already caused me to miss 48 hours of work (I am a federal firefighter) and will require more missed time should surgery be required. There were no warning lamps, the backup camera was not engaged, the only audible sound was the beep that the vehicle makes when engaging the parking brake automatically. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

I own a 2018 GMC sierra denali ultimate, the truck has the 6. 2 engine which had the lifter issue as stated with the current situation. At the time, the truck had 37,000 miles when the issues started. I purchased the truck from andy mohr with 8806 miles on it in November of 2019. I worked overseas for the dod so that’s why the miles are low. After I got it fixed, ($4500 dollars at hare Chevrolet) I experienced the transmission shake while driving home from work with my children in it. The transmission was shaking so bad the whole cab was rocking. That repair was $3,300. Now, the truck has piston slap and rod issues and currently at hare Chevrolet for service. I was told I need a full rebuild ($12,000 dollars or a new engine $14000 dollars). As a retired air force veteran, I didn’t expect issues like this, especially when I baby the truck and it currently has 40,530 miles. I had regular oil changes and service, yet now stuck with a high class truck that has serious issues that seem to be ignored by gm and andy mohr GMC. Andy mohr sold me an extended warranty at time of purchase but I paid for a year and a half that wasn’t usable. If I had that warranty I would be covered now. But besides that, it’s a denali, I shouldn’t be having a new engine at 40,530 miles. I am happy that there is an investigation but it needs to be widened because my truck was right before the new model rollout but I am having the same issues. If needed, I have all my receipts and information and will provide the service rep at hare. The reason why its at hare vs andy mohr is due to me catching them not fully servicing my truck and joy riding my camaro zl1 after an oil change before I went home for a funeral.
On 10/21/2025 as I was traveling on the highway in kansas at 60 mph, the vehicle lost power and the engine went into limp mode immediately reducing the speed dramatically. Multiple warning lights flashed on the screen. I was able to get the truck to the side of the highway. The vehicle never started again. I was informed by the dealer that the vehicle would need a new engine.
I just took my 2021 GMC sierra 1503. 0 duramax diesel into faulkner Nissan, today 10/18/2025 m, to have that recall fixed. I picked it up from the dealership and drove about 10 miles before it went into limp mode and reduced power mode while I was driving and started to shift very roughly and I’ve never had any issue like this before they supposedly fix this recall, I think the software patch made it worse in my case. Now my vehicle is throwing a bunch of different transmission error codes, that it has never produced , and it is going into reduced power mode,as I’m driving and going into limp mode as I’m driving, which you never has done before and it feels like it’s stuttering in early gears now and the idle was really rough it didn’t idle at a specific spot it went from 800 to 1300 back down to 800 when it should’ve just been idle at 800. I don’t know what to do. It seems like this recall made the problem worse for me and my truck in this case, I don’t know what to do and I don’t know where to go. I hope you guys can help us. Please make GMC take responsibility before somebody gets killed. If they haven’t already this issue is extremely dangerous and I’m sure is destroying the transmission. I don’t feel comfortable driving my family in my vehicle anymore because of this issue it is terrifying….
Ticking noise coming from engine slight metallic noise as well. Rpms drop and when they drop, you can feel power loss constant hunting in the rpms. Also a weird vibration, not all the time in the front end somewhere.
Dtc code p1098 present related to faulty coolant control valve on 3. 0 duramax diesel engiine. This is a known issue with this engine and is supposed to be covered under the 100k mile powertrain warranty. Previously took vehicle into dealership for repair involving replacement of the coolant control valve but was told reprogramming of the ecm was required first step per gm repair bulletin. Reprogramming cost me $195 and was told this was not covered under the 100k powertrain warranty. Now, a few months later, the same issue and dtc code p1098 happened again while driving on freeway at freeway speeds and caused vehicle computer to limit speed of the vehicle which caused hazardous situation in construction zone as was not able to maintain speed of traffic while towing trailer with boat. I also understand that gm has issued special extended warranty related to this coolant control valve in September 2025 which extends the warranty coverage up to 15 years and/or up to 150k miles but I was told at the dealership that my VIN# does not qualify for this extended coverage for some unknown reason?.
The contact owns a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle shuddered while in first gear. The contact stated that the transmission sounded strained and shifted rough before slamming into gear. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, no cause for the failure was found. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the vehicle was oversteering while turning to the right. The dealer replaced the valve and torque converter. On another occasion, while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle accelerated independently. Most recently, a burned transmission fluid odor was coming from the front of the vehicle and entered the cabin through the a/c vents. There oil stains found on the ground on several occasions. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the valve body was replaced, the fluid levels were checked, and the transmission filter was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The contact called the dealer, and the dealer towed the vehicle. The dealer determined that the oil cap was loose. The vehicle remained at the dealer unrepaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 8,496.

Transmission self destructed at 68,000 miles. Had to have it replaced at GMC dealership at a cost of over $7,000. GMC did not offer any coverage of the cost.
Transmission on my vehicle has failed three times since I bought the vehicle in October of 2021. Vehicle currently has 39,000 miles. First transmission issue was resolved by the dealership by replacing the transmission valve body. This solved the problem for approximately 12,000 miles. In September of 2025 with 39,000 miles the transmission suffered a catastrophic breakdown which lead to complete transmission replacement. After being “fix” the vehicle suffered another catastrophic transmission failure within 400 miles of the complete transmission replacement. This incident caused the vehicle to shut completely down and I was stuck in the traffic lane of the us highway. Fortunately my vehicle and I were not struck while waiting 30 minutes for a tow truck. Presently the vehicle is back at the dealership awaiting repair. From my review of available on-line information it appears there are 10’’s of thousands of GMC sierra pickups with major transmission issues. This needed to be addressed before someone is killed due to the poor quality of these GMC trucks.
The contact owns a 2017 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. No warning lights were illuminated. Additionally, the rpm increased quickly. The contact stated that the failure occurred while driving on a busy highway. The contact drove the vehicle across a four-lane highway to get the vehicle to the shoulder of the road. The contact stated that the transmission had seized. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where the vehicle was diagnosed with transmission failure. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The contact referenced an unknown recall with a similar failure description; however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 128,177.

Constant engine issues. Cams, lifters, now needs new motor. Motor apparently unavailable.
Constant engine issues, cams, lifters. Transmission problems. These engines in these vehicles need to be recalled. I have bought 6 of these trucks and all of them have the same issues. Spending 14k on new engines one after another is ridiculous. These are classified as “work” trucks and can’t handle “working”.

My car is having the same issue as many other 2024 GMC sierra owners. Reverse gear is not working. It is due to the transmission valve body being faulty. Why GMC has not send a recall notice yet.
