Wn a 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 6. 2l (VIN: [xxx] ), which is now experiencing a severe misfire, engine ticking, and diagnostic code p318a. I’ve confirmed this issue is related to gm recall n252494001 for engine connecting rod/crankshaft failure. However, I’ve been told my VIN has not yet been activated for recall repairs, and both the local dealership and GMC support have refused to escalate my case or offer assistance. This is a known safety issue, and I’m now at risk of total engine failure and significant financial loss while waiting for gm to act. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Purchase a used 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 denali with a 3. 0l diesel at around 42,000 miles. Drove it for about 1,500 miles before I started noticing unusual shifting with the transmission which became more noticeable with time. At around 44,000 miles, the truck had two hard shifts going 35-40 mph on a flat round and put itself into limp mode. Turned off and on the truck multiple times, the engine light always stayed on but the symptoms would come and go. Either way the truck always went back into limp mode after a few miles. I did a quick scan and it came out with a p0700 and p0746 code. I limped it to the dealer and was told that it was a bad valve body which is apparently on back order with no eta and they can’t tell me when I will get my truck back.

The contact owns a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that after shifting to drive (d) and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond as intended. The contact shifted to park(p) and attempted to turn off the vehicle; however, the vehicle failed to turn off. The contact stated after several attempts, the vehicle turned off; however, the contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The contact stated that the "service engine" warning light was illuminated. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer. The contact stated that the tow truck driver was unable to shift the vehicle to neutral(n) to winch the vehicle onto the flat bed. The dealer had not yet diagnosed the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 17,000.
This vehicle experienced catastrophic engine failure while I was on vacation 400 miles from home. I have researched this failure and there is a class action lawsuit against GMC. My truck has been at the dealer for 25 days and still waiting for authorization from fidelity warranty services. Considering it’s such a common problem I feel GMC should be paying for this. At the very least the warranty company is aware of this problem and purposely delaying the authorization to repair. I just bought a new camper which I cannot use. I am fisherman and cannot use my boat. My beach pass is also on the vehicle. So essentially my summer has been ruined by a company that produced a faulty vehicle and didn’t discord this information to me.
Vehicle was in for routine service, oil change and tire rotation. Per the published engine recall bulletin [manufacturer recall number n252494000] the recall directs the technicians to check for a dtc and if not present to drain and replace filter and oil using 0-40w oil, to replace the oil filler cap with new oil specification labeling, and provide a corrected page for the owners operating manual. All very simple steps. There is absolutely no reason for this check and service not to be performed during routine maintenance. Gm is dragging their feet on performing a critical recall and should be held accountable for slow walking this recall. Servicing dealer claims they had zero 0-40w oil in the entire dealership. I can go to walmart and get cases of this oil. Replacement filler caps, which must be replaced can be quickly produced by the tens of thousands if desired, which apparently is a very low priority for gm. Servicing dealer was heritage GMC, rockwall, TX. Desired outcome is to require completion of all outstanding recalls if the vehicle is presented for servicing regardless of reason. Further, to specify a definitive timeline to complete any outstanding recalls and have that information communicated to each owner. Manufacturer recall number n252494000 has not been completed at this time.

While driving on the highway at 70 mph, the truck experienced a harsh transmission shift followed by a sudden loss of acceleration and entered shutdown mode to protect the engine. The steering became stiff, all dashboard warning lights illuminated, and a message appeared on the driver display indicating a transmission issue and advising to drive with caution. The rpms surged and the truck struggled to maintain a speed of 45 mph while the remaining at 4000 rpm. This created an extremely hazardous situation for both me and my passenger. I safely pulled into the breakdown lane, came to a complete stop, shifted into park, and turned off the engine. Upon restarting the vehicle, the check engine light remained on, and the transmission continued to shift abnormally at low speeds, including noticeable shuddering.
The check engine light came on at one point. I took it to figure out why the check engine light was coming on and the scanner indicated that the nox catalyst was below threshold. I researched it and it is a common issue. The check engine light eventually turned off after a couple of days. About 2 weeks later it came back on. I noticed as I was driving the coolant fans were running at 100% meaning that they were blowing long and hard. So I scanned it and it said that the engine coolant valve was at fault. This is also a common issue with the vehicle, particularly in the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 3. 0 turbo diesel. It is a faulty part and it costs thousands of dollars to replace. How can these two issues not be on a national recall by gm? they are too common and very expensive to repair. This issue is so common that now the valve is on a national back order. Meaning the parts may not be available for 30-120 days. The vehicle is not safe to drive with a bad engine coolant valve. I have now a rental car for the past 7 days while my truck sits waiting for a valve to arrive and pay thousands in repair just to drive it again.
There is an active recall regarding the safety of my vehicle. Nhtsa: 25v274 manufacturer: n252494000 I contacted gm and was told to see a dealer to have my engine replaced. The dealer is refusing to remedy the recall and pointed me back to gm stating that "gm told us not to service this recall because there isn't yet a remedy". I'm stuck with a very unsafe vehicle that is less than 1 year old and the manufacture is refusing to honor their own recall.

The contact owns a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 60 mph, there was an abnormal vibration coming from the steering wheel. No warning light was illuminated. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and transferred the contact to the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 125,326.
This is the second time in 2 days!! while driving ~35mph the truck experienced a harsh transmission shift followed by a sudden loss of acceleration and entered shutdown mode to protect the engine. The steering became stiff, all dashboard warning lights illuminated, and a message appeared on the driver display indicating a transmission issue and advising to drive with caution. This created an extremely hazardous condition for me while driving on s busy stretch of road. I pulled onto the side of the road, came to a complete stop, shifted into park, and turned off the engine. Upon restarting the vehicle, the check engine light remained on, and the transmission continued to shift abnormally at low speeds, including some noticeable shuddering. My GMC application recorded the issue and reminded me to schedule service.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? the valvetrain system failed due to broken rocker arms, which resulted in additional internal engine damage. This failure occurred under normal driving conditions. The affected components have not yet been discarded and are available for inspection upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? the failure caused sudden engine misfiring and knocking, reducing engine power while I was operating the vehicle. This significantly compromised acceleration and response time, especially during merging and lane changes, which could have led to an accident. Any unexpected loss of power or engine instability at highway speeds poses a serious risk to myself, passengers, and other motorists. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes. The issue has been diagnosed and confirmed by an independent certified mechanic, who verified the broken rocker arms and resulting engine damage during inspection. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? the vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. Only a certified independent mechanic has inspected the failure thus far. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? yes. The check engine light appeared and the engine began running rough and producing a knocking sound. These symptoms occurred just prior to the confirmed failure and prompted me to stop driving the vehicle immediately and have it inspected. Given the seriousness of this issue and reports from other GMC 5. 3l engine owners experiencing similar rocker arm failures, I urge the NHTSA to investigate this potential defect. It poses a real and significant safety risk.
Truck completely shuts off at any speed going down the highway. Complete loss of power. Have to coast to side of road and restart vehicle.

Truck randomly shuts off and steering wheel locks up going down the road.
My 2023 GMC sierra at4 with the 6. 2l l87 engine is showing signs of premature engine issues despite passing the recall inspection. I hear persistent lifter chatter, which is known to be a precursor to catastrophic failure in these engines. I no longer feel safe driving this vehicle due to the known defect with the crankshaft, rods, and valvetrain. Gm issued a recall, but it appears to be incomplete and does not address the underlying issue in many vehicles, including mine. I am worried about sudden engine failure and safety while driving.
The contact owns a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated while driving 25-30 mph, the transmission shifted hard while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that while driving 75 mph with the cruise control activated, the vehicle hesitated with the message "service transmission immediately" displayed. The vehicle stalled and the contact coasted the vehicle off to the shoulder of the highway. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. While speaking with a relative that owned a similar vehicle, the contact was informed of NHTSA campaign number: 24v797000 (power train); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and confirmed that the vehicle was not under recall; the contact was referred to the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,200.
The coolant control valve is faulty and is on national backorder causing months of my truck sitting in the shop. This is not an isolated issue. Gm is claiming it is not covered under warranty, but the part design is clearly a serious issue.
While driving on streets and freeways the truck will shift hard and then loss of acceleration and into limp mode. Lights all on dash go crazy like brakes, 4wd, fuel gauge and check engine light. It has done it 8 times now and has been in the shop 5 times with same issue. Major safety issue while driving 70 mile hour then governs it at 55-62 mile per hour.
Driving on the highway under normal driving condition, my check engine light came on and said service transmission. This then put the truck into "limp mode" and I was stuck going 60mph in a 75mph zone. Dealership scanned and found that the coolant sensor control flow valve is faulty. This part is in such demand for these vehicles that it is unknown when the part will be in.
Had to have transmission rebuilt found metal shavings and was shifting bad and shuttering. Vehicle has 63,000 miles and is well maintained. Vehicle was taken to GMC but said their transmission person was on vacation for 2 weeks. Also parts dept said they had no transmissions in stock and were back ordered. Truck was taken to aamco and transmission was rebuilt and torque converter replaced . This is a common issue with GMC trucks.

The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while vacationing in canada and driving at various speeds, the vehicle jerked, and the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal. In addition, the rpm fluctuated, and the engine revved abnormally. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to reverse(r) as intended. The contact was able to coast to the side of the road while in limp mode. The vehicle was towed to a dealer, where it was diagnosed, and it was determined that the transmission had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact was informed that when the dealer contacted the manufacturer to order a new transmission, the manufacturer refused and informed the dealer to repair the current transmission. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that a week later, the vehicle experienced another failure. The contact stated that on a separate occasion, while approaching a stop sign, the brake pedal was depressed, and the engine revved unintendedly. The contact used force to depress the brake pedal. The failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer back in the USA; however, no cause for the failure was found. The vehicle remained at the dealer unrepaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and was awaiting the results of the diagnostic test. The failure mileage was approximately 9,000.
I am writing to formally submit a serious safety complaint regarding the transmission in my vehicle, which nearly caused a life-threatening accident while driving under normal conditions. While traveling on a two-lane rural highway, I was attempting to climb a steep hill when the transmission suddenly began to slip. My vehicle lost power mid-ascent, despite steady pressure on the gas pedal. The rpms shot up erratically, but the vehicle failed to accelerate. As I began to crest the hill, the transmission completely disengaged, forcing my vehicle into a free-roll situation. The danger escalated quickly. As I started to descend the hill, I attempted to downshift to control my speed—but the transmission would not respond. It slipped again, and I was essentially coasting with no engine braking. An 18-wheeler was behind me, approaching fast. I could see it barreling toward me in my rearview mirror, and I had nowhere to go. With the road shoulder too narrow and no pull-off in sight, I had to veer dangerously close to the edge to avoid being rear-ended. I truly believe that if the driver of the semi hadn’t taken evasive action, I would not be here to write this complaint today. This transmission failure is not only unacceptable—it is a critical safety issue. A vehicle should not lose all power and braking control during normal highway driving. This is not just an inconvenience or a performance issue. This is a defect that puts lives at risk. I am requesting that this transmission be investigated for an official recall. I have since learned that I am not the only one experiencing these symptoms, and it is only a matter of time before this defect causes a fatal accident. Please take immediate action to investigate this issue. I am willing to provide full documentation, diagnostic reports, and be available for further interviews if needed. Lives depend on it.

While traveling at highway speeds in a very congested and busy segment near virginia beach virginia the truck began shifting erratically and suddenly lost power which required me to cross two lanes of traffic 30 miles an hour below the speed limit to get to the shoulder. Cars were swerving everywhere to miss us with this sudden loss of power and speed. The truck has been towed and now at the dealer where it has been diagnosed with a stuck/failed pressure control solenoid and the valve body must be replaced which is apparently on back order due to the high number of failures on the gm 10speed transmissions. Such a sudden loss of power and the reduced power mode of the software made the situation extremely dangerous at highway speeds in congested traffic. Something should be done quickly to get these vehicles off the road until a suitable fix is resolved as someone is going to get killed.
I am reporting a critical issue with the transmission. The transmission frequently slips, hesitates, and jerks unexpectedly during acceleration and gear shifts. On multiple occasions, the vehicle has lost power or failed to respond while entering intersections, merging onto highways, or attempting to accelerate—posing a serious safety risk. The issue often occurs without warning and has worsened over time. Additionally, there are instances of harsh downshifting, delayed engagement from park to drive, and sudden lurching forward or backward, which could easily result in a collision. Despite visits to the dealership and complaints made, the issue has not been resolved, and I’ve learned that many other owners of this same model have reported nearly identical symptoms. This appears to be a systemic problem with the transmission system. Given the safety risk, especially in traffic and at high speeds, I strongly believe this defect warrants immediate investigation and a formal recall.
Vehicle's 10 speed transmission on numerous occasions has locked the wheels at high rates of speed on the highway, causing the vehicle to veer across several lanes and almost crash. Vehicle will not always engage in drive selection causing a filed accident while trying to go from reverse to drive.
Within the first week of buying my 2014 GMC 1500 sierra, the transmission fluid was black in griddy. I have had it flushed, then filter changed and new fluid put in within 2 week time frame. A week later had to put a new transmission in it. It barely would drive. So a purchase at 2,999 then to a transmission 4,800 and new control arm with ball joint with new axels. They were busted. Another 2,000. Its sicking. Advice.
Catastrophic transmission failure. Original transmission failed at 113,00 miles. I replaced it at the dealership with a factory rebuilt transmission and that transmission failed after only 40,000 miles. Now the vehicle is back in the dealership shop and they want me to replace the transmission a third time. This transmission is the 6l80 which is prone to fail, the torque converter fails and the transmission locks up I contacted general motors and filed a complaint with them and they said they would not take any action or assist me with the repair.
Have owned my 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 3. 0 duramax for a year and the check engine light has come on multiple times for a "coolant control valve" issue. The truck runs the fans at 100% and puts the truck into reduced power at least once a day. I have read that gm sometimes will not cover this repair under powertrain warranty even though it's an engine problem. Please fix this issue! to answer the previous questions, the coolant control valve is malfunctioning, and the truck is currently at the dealer being inspected. Yes the dealer has said this issue is common on these trucks (confirmed by national GMC in american fork, utah). Yes the check engine light has appeared multiple times. These issues started appearing in June 2025.
Truck was in "park" idling for 20 minutes when it went from park to "reverse" on its own. A person sitting in a dump truck saw the backup lights on my truck come on and the truck started backing towards his truck. My truck hit his truck causing damage to my left rear bumper.
I was going camping and pulling a small 20 ft trailer with my spouse and 4 young kids in the car when the truck stopped accelerating and would not go over 30 mph on the freeway and the fan started running. There was no warning light on the dash. I was then stranded 2 hour from home with my kids in a gas station parking lot and had to have the truck and trailer hauled home.
I am the original owner of a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 6. 2l l86 engine and 8-speed 8l90 transmission. I began experiencing severe transmission shuddering and harsh shifting, especially at lower speeds or under light acceleration. When the issue occurs, I press the gas and the engine revs up to 6,000 rpm without reaching 20 mph, making it extremely difficult — and dangerous — to merge into traffic or cross intersections. This issue has worsened over time and is now a critical safety concern, especially with children in the vehicle. I have researched this issue and found that many owners report the same transmission defect, and there is an open class action lawsuit and a gm technical service bulletin (TSB #18-na-355) describing the exact symptoms. The vehicle has become unsafe to drive. GMC should issue a recall or mandatory repair program for this known defect before someone is injured or killed.
I was driving with my wife about to merge into traffic on the interstate when I had a huge power loss. It was a busy part of the interstate where I could have been ran over. There was a lot of traffic and was fortunate the semi driver was alert and slowed down. I was not aware of any failures of this motor or received any notices from gm. After conducting research I found that this was a know issue that gm failed to report. My truck has been serviced regularly and until that point had not given any signs of a upcoming failure, I have read that gm is looking into other years such as 2019 which mine is. I have had no luck with gm customer care with the only response being I need to crunch the numbers from my claim advisor. I have the 6. 2 l87 motor and know of the clip failure do to poor assembly and parts and debris getting into the motor causing the failure. I am looking to report this and request any assistance available. My first stop was the dealership, then gm customer care.
During a turn in the parking lot my vehicle would not allow me to turn something with traction control came up on the screen. The past few days the car got stuck at 0 rpms while driving and did not feel I had adequate power and other times has stalled.
I was driving and without warning the engine stopped. Luckily I was on a neighborhood street and was just left in the middle of the road without incident. However, if I was turning on a left into traffic or on a major highway I would hate to think what would of happened. Again, this motor gave zero indication it was going to fail. It did not knock etc. Truck is currently at the dealer waiting for a new engine. This recall will lead to fatalities if others fail in this manner.
