My car began quitting while driving may 2009, however, it would immediately start again. 06/2009-7/2009 when trying to turn the ignition, the dashboard would flicker. After a few tries, the car would start but then quit. On 8/4/2009, while driving the car quit again but then smoke came from behind the steering wheel ( steering column area). Simultaneously, the car quit. The car would not start at all by turning the ignition forward. However when turning it backwards it would try to crank. The car was towed to and now currently sits at bluegrass Honda in paducah, ky. According to Honda, it is the ignition switch, which I found was under recall but the dealership claims that the ignition was replaced in 2002. I don't believe this is true because here I have the very problem that the recall acknowledged. I don't believe I should responsible for payment on a recall, however, the dealership is charging me $200. 00.
I was trying on the highway going about 65 mph when the car stalled. When I realized what happened and tried to coast off the road, the car started back up without me doing anything. It continued to stall and restart nine times in a 3 mile stretch. The last time I pulled off the road because the car did not restart. I waited a few minutes and tried to start the car. It started. I drove the next 10 miles holding the key steadying in the ignition. I don't know if that helped but I got home without it stalling again. I knew it was the ignition switch because it had been recalled and replaced twice previously. When I took it to the dealer they told me it was my emission system and I had to have my evac canister replaced ($250). I did that and was driving home from the dealer when my car stalled and restarted again. I took it to a local repair man who took care of the problem. He replaced the ignition switch and the car has been fine since.
I was driving back from sf to our home in santa rosa, and I noticed smoke streaming from the top of the steering column. Then the odometer dropped from 65 to 0, went back to 65, then fluctuated. As I took the exit off the freeway, the car was losing power, and jerked when I gave it gas. I pulled over and called the tow truck. The engine did not start when the tow truck driver tried it, although it cranked. The car was towed to marin Honda. They tested and found the electrical portion of the ignition switch had failed. They replaced it but at the same time the d4(trans gear selection)light began to flash. The service advisor said that it's a completely different problem, and that we should take the car back to the mechanic who replaced the trans fluid 7 weeks ago. (my wife told the customer service advisor that we had the trans work done a couple of months ago when it fact it was just changing fluid as part of regular maintenance). Marin Honda charged us $205 for the replacement of ignition switch. The d4 starts flashing when the engine is started and shift to any one of gears. And it makes a big clunk and the whole car shakes when the gear is shifted to reverse or drive. I called marin Honda cust advisor and told him it must be related to ignition switch replacement, but he's adamant that it has nothing to do with it. When we checked your website and looked under "recall" for 1999 Accord, we found it had ignition sw recalls in three different years, 2002, 2003, and 2005. Ignition switch(2002), cylinder wear, collar, plate latch(2003), interlock function(2005). Could trans range sensor ckt malfunction be caused by heat from the ignition wiring burning out?.
My husband and I bought a 1999 Honda Accord ex in 2002. Not long after buying the car we noticed that the car acted sluggish when going from a stop. It wasn't that much of a problem so we didn't do much about it other than adding heet to the gasoline thinking we had bad gasoline. Then we started noticing a sort of grinding noise when we would start the car which came from the key ignition. The car wouldn't start so we would try again and then it would start. This year 2006 we started having problems with the car stalling when we would stop at stop signs. We took the car to a mechanic and we paid for new spark wire and plug. Soon after the car started stalling as we were driving down the highway! we immediately took car to a Honda dealership where we were told our catalytic converter needed to be replaced! my husband didn't think this was the problem so we didn't have it replaced. The car kept on getting worse almost causing a couple of accidents when it would quit going down the highway. We then heard of a recall on 1999 Honda Accords through consumer reports. We made an appointment with the Honda dealership again but were told we would have to pay for the repair since our car wasn't included in the recall! we called Honda corp to find out why it wasn't included and were told they recalled only certain makes and models and ours wasn't one of them. We of course went ahead and had the ignition switch replaced. We can't understand why Honda didn't have our model and make recalled when we could have been in a serious accident. At the very least we should have been told of a problem so we could have repaired it right away. We did keep the ignition switch. We just had the car repaired but haven't had any problems with it stalling.
Car stalled while driving. Was able to get car restart after pushing it to the side of the road. Car would not start later in the day. Had car towed to nearest auto shop. Shop informed me of recall. Contacted nearest dealer who informed me that VIN was not part of the recall. Shop replaced ignition switch and needed to reprogram keys, resulting in $700 bill.
