3 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2019

Car repeatedly shuts off when driving. I was driving in the highway and my Honda lights started flickering and the speedometer hands started flickering. My car then shut off and my wheel locked. I tried to restart and it would not turn back on. It sounded like my car was dragging something but I checked underneath and didn't see anything. After gassing the car while starting, it finally started back up but you could tell it was barely being powered. It sounded like it was trying hard to power but it was only doing it so much. Now I'm sitting still on side the highway and it also runs hot so I filled the antifreeze and now I'm letting t run, hoping that the antifreeze is the cause of these problems. My car sounds awful!!!!! it doesn't even have 150k miles!!!! for it to be a 1999!!!!!!.

After reading the complaints I see quite a few others have same problem. This is a safety issue and car should be recalled!.

7 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2015

On March 3, 2015 my wife's 1999 Accord would not start. We had the starter replaced for about $550. 00 but the car was still near impossible to start and the engine can cut out at any time once you do have it started. The auto repairman told us the keys made poor contact inside the ignition switch and that was why it was still so hard to start. He taught us a tedious process to start the car but since then when we drive it the engine can suddenly stop running and stopp, also disabling the power steering. The car is no longer safe to drive. It stopped running 4 times on a 10 mile trip today.

10 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2014

As I was driving my vehicle on the highway, the engine suddenly turned off. As a result, I had to maneuver the car to the side of the highway as I coasted to a stop. During this time it was difficult to steer. I was able to turn the car on again and be on my way. It then happened again several miles down the highway. This was about 5 days ago and it has not happened since.

11 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

1999 Honda Accord was subject of a recall in may 2002 for ignition switch that the car would shut down unexpectedly. Repair was completed on subject auto and has not had any further problems with the switch until two week ago. The car would shut down and did at 65mph in traffic. Managed to steer to the roadside and restart the car. This could have been a major accident! the switch has again been replaced at my expense. This is not right.

12 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2013

My 1999 Honda will randomly just quit running. The engine dies and the door locks unlock. It will start right away. From what I've been reading, there was a recall for this exact situation. Do you know how I can contact the company to final a complaint?.

13 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2013

7/8/2013 approaching a stop sign on a flat residential street, the car suddenly died. It restarted right away. The next morning the car died as soon as I put it in gear. Again it restarted. On my way home from work that same day all the lights on the dash came on for a second, but the car did remain on, although there seemed to be a second or two where everything felt like it froze up. Ever since then, I have to hold the key turned for about 5 whole seconds to keep the car started. If I let go right away, the car immediately dies. Then on Friday 8/31, all the lights flashed on the dash, and then the car died completely as I was accelerating on the on ramp to the highway. I was able to pull over quickly and fortunately did not cause an accident. After a few minutes the car did restart and I was able to make it home. I called my Honda dealer in July after the first incident, and was told they would only look at it for $100 diagnostic fee. I had my local independent mechanic check everything they could think of a few days later , battery, alternator- and the last resort they had was the ignition switch. Honda has already had two recalls on my vehicle for ignition switch issues, 2002 and 2005. The Honda dealer was very unwilling to check anything this time around and made it very clear that I would be responsible for paying for the diagnostic check , and that did not seem appropriate given the ignition switch issues in the past.

14 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2011

1999 Honda Accord ex-v6. Consumer states vehicle engine quit and would not restart and gear shift would lock the consumer stated after waiting for about five minutes; she was able to restart the vehicle and continue as normal. The dealer was unable to find a problem.

15 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

At times, engine suddenly dies out when coming to a stop (traffic light; stop sign). The car has automatic transmission. I can easily put the car in "park" again and restart with no problem. The car has 80k miles and is well maintained. After a few of these scary experiences, took the car to a local Honda dealership in atlanta GA. Cost of $160 (description - routine maintenance - bg fuel service all - cleaned throttle body). Assumed this would have corrected the issue. I was wrong. In two more occasions - had the same problem again. The last time it happened, the car suddenly stopped while slowing down to stop at a "stop sign". The car started again (takes a while in an automatic transmission though). I was lucky a car behind me had enough space to stop. This time, I researched the web and noticed many owners have similar problems with Honda Accord 1999. I was one of the lucky ones though (the car had not yet stopped while driving in a busy traffic). At 20,374 mile, the same Honda dealership performed the "2002 safety recall - Accord ignition switch" - "electrical ignition switch fp number : 3510-s84-305 (switch e 79530)", this was done on 12/03/02. Took the car back to the Honda dealership on 10/28/11. I asked the service technician to look into the 2002 ignition switch recall ; customer complaints & what else was performed to correct it. I don't believe this service adviser was aware of this major safety issue with Honda Accords (1999). This time the dealership surprised me with replacing ignition switch again. This was a $405 repair. The fp number is 35130-s84-a01 (switch s 79530). I assume there are two parts in the ignition switch. I am not certain why the 2002 safety recall did not advice the dealerships to replace both parts (e & s switches). The dealership advised me the "s" switch is behind the ignition switch.

16 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2010

As I was driving down hwy 95 in maryland the engine died. Luckily I was in the right lane so I was able to coast off the road to the shoulder. The problem has occurred several times since and the mechanics I have taken the car to have not been able to find the problem.

17 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2009

Engine would shut down while driving. This happened several times prior to breach in the engine due to a porous engine. I had to have a new2 engine put in car.

18 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2009

This is a v6 automatic. I have kept up with the maintenance of the vehicle exactly as Honda has instructed. I have even gone as far to only get it serviced at the dealership. The vehicle has always shifted weird from park into drive. At 75000 miles it began hard shifting into 1st and around 85000 miles it began to not want to shift from 1st into 2nd and especially 2nd back to 1st. Now putting the car in reverse is causing problems. This issue with 1999 v-6 automatics is documented everywhere. The dealer said they are aware the issue is wide spread and can't do anything about it. Honda has been aware of this problem as a wide spread defect and the NHTSA should put some pressure on Honda to step-up. A well maintained engine should last more than 90k miles on this Honda. Not ok and Honda knew and knows they built a car with a major defect.

19 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2009

About 5 weeks ago, the engine of my 1999 Honda Accord ex (4-cylinder automatic) began dying while I am driving. Three times I have been pulling into heavy traffic when the engine died, and I am lucky not to have been injured or killed in an accident. There are no visible, audible or tactical signs that the engine is about to shut down, and no indicator lights. The local Honda dealer charged me $100 to evaluate the situation to no avail. Use of fuel cleaner was their recommendation, but that did nothing to solve the problem. Frustrated, I consulted the internet and found 43 separate similar complaints on carcomplaints. Com. Complainants all say that they have spent hundreds of dollars on going from dealer to dealer for diagnosis and a variety of repairs, none of which seem to resolve the problem. I doubt seriously that american Honda is as ignorant of this problem as they claim to be, but they offer no help. Please log onto carcomplaints. Com to see how widespread and dangerous this problem appears to be. I'm sure this is just the tip of the iceberg.

20 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2008

My 99 Honda Accord ex shuts off while driving, this started almost two years ago. The car provides zero notice. I recently attended a auto parts shop for testing and they were unable to assist. I was directed to my local Honda dealership. I researched the matter online and determined my car was on recall for this problem. I briefly remember receiving a recall notification by mail several years ago but did nothing. I called breakaway Honda in greenville SC and was denied recall based on my VIN. Please help me with this matter.

23 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2003

While driving down the freeway going about 40mph the accelorator stuck and continued to accel at uncontrolable speeds. The brake would not stop the car and I had to put it in neutral and slam on the gas pedal to release it. I have since taken the car to mel rapton Honda and spoke to the service manager who claims that he has never heard of this happening. It has not done it since. I had a mechanic check the accelerator cables as well as the cruise control cables and there were no apparent problems.
