36 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2024

Steering gets very stiff sometimes and you have to yank it to control the vehicle's direction. This has been happening over the past year and is now happening more frequently. The warning light comes on sometimes. The problem has not yet been reported to the dealer but from reports on the web this seems to be a common problem in 2013 and 2014 models.

37 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2024

This morning I started my car and everything was normal. I started backing out of my driveway and my steering wheel would not turn in any direction. The steering light is on in the dashboard and the steering wheel is locked. I went back into my driveway to turn the vehicle off and back on, but nothing changed. I’m lucky this didn’t happen while driving on the road.

38 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2024

Driving home from manhattan I hit bump and the steering light came on and I could not steer my car. Realizing what happened (I first thought the car stalled) I was able to put the car in neutral , shut it off, and restart it hoping the problem would go away which thankfully it did. Needless to say I was very lucky not to be hit by another car as this was a very dangerous situation. I have read about others having this problem and wonder why Honda has not addressed this very dangerous problem yet. I am afraid to drive my car in fear of this happening again and maybe not being so lucky next time.

39 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2024

Complaint #11590390, after loosing my steering I had to take my car to the dealer I found no recalls on this website but much to my surprise there is. Honda replaced the steering gearbox. Total parts and labor came to $3056. 69. The recall campaign number for the esp gearbox replacement is 15-056-5z200, good info for the future for you and anyone else having this issue. Not bad for a eleven year old car, not to mention how happy I was not having to pay for the repair. Thank you Honda.

42 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/29/2024

Lost power steering while driving.

43 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2024

I lost control of vehicle while driving because the electrical steering motor stopped working. I’ve had the electric starter already replaced twice with Honda parts and it’s still not working. There’s something wrong with the steering. I already placed a complaint and I have not heard back from Honda or NHTSA. I sent letters to nys senators schumer and hillabrand and I have not yet heard back from them yet either. I sent letters emails to congress and the senate transportation committees. I’ve found testimonials for the same issues online even with videos. I just read a complaint that was nearly identical the experience I had except it happened in 2020. The power steering stops and starts same for the cars starter and windows. I took the car to Honda dealer to repair it on March 29th, 2024. I now have a car repair bill for $8500 at curry Honda in yorktown heights. They said I needed to replace entire exhaust system $3000 because they couldn’t get to the steering column without taking down the fragile exhaust system. Basically, I had no choice. In order to start the repairs they wanted a $4,500 down payment which I paid. They’ve now had the car for 37 days. They described the steering column and motor system as being completely corroded to the point where the steering column was going to snap/break. What they said at the Honda dealer was the Honda steering motor and wiring was completely corroded which is not common. A few weeks later they told me that the knuckle/ball bearings were rusted out and that all the shock absorbers needed replaced as they were also rusted out even the screws According to them. They said these should all be replaced or I would fail inspection. The bill went from $3000 to $4700 to $6200 to $7900 to now $8500 includes tax. They’re still working on the vehicle and they’ve had it since March 29th, it’s now may 05th, 2024. I’ve asked them for the parts that they’re removing and they said they’ll save the parts. Do you want them? recall?.

44 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2024

While driving on [xxx] in south carolina (we are from ohio and were on a vacation to celebrate [xxx]) we started our turn into the left lane to pass a vehicle when the steering wheel suddenly sharply turned on its own and shot us towards the medium and oncoming traffic. As my husband was able regain control and hard steer to the right before we hit oncoming traffic we were, as you can imagine, terrified. We were able to steer the car to a safe pull off and tried to recover our nerves and start the process of figuring out what was happening and what we were going to do as we were so far away from home. I googled the problem we were having and learned that we were not alone in having this steering system problem. I was extremely disappointed to learn that this was a known problem but there had been no recall. We had no indications nor any information that this could occur. We located a Honda dealership approximately 22 miles from our location and decided we would carefully try to get to that location. At the dealership we were told it was a known problem but they would have to locate parts, which they did in atlanta, and have them overnighted if possible. They were very helpful, drove us to a hotel which we paid for, as we waited for parts to arrive. While fixing the electronic steering system they located another issue with another electronic box that had something to do with the starter which needed to be replaced as well. Each of these problems I came to understand were known to Honda, and I believe NHTSA, but no recalls were issued. I'm sorry but I believe that the potential to be killed and to kill others due to the failure of the electronic steering system while driving a vehicle that is known to have these problems is a recall and should be repaired and replaced at Honda's expense not those that invested in what they considered a safe vehicle. Our bill for these repairs was $3,826. 41. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

45 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2024

A steering failure. Unable to steer the car. It goes to the left and steering wheel is not returned to the center and kept turning out of my lane. I've brought the car in authorized Honda dealer on 1/29/24 for full maintenance service on 1/29/24 and there are no recalls on this issue.

48 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2024

Steering completely locked up. No errors or warnings appeared on the dashboard so the car was towed in for repairs. The dealership updated eps software to fix the issue.

49 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2024

Car driving normally until sudden power steering failure. Steering wheel stayed straight when I tried to veer left - I had to use two hands to steer for the rest of the drive. This could’ve been dangerous in the initial moments as I was driving downhill and around a curve in wet weather. No dash lights have come on, and I haven’t driven it again yet. Car hasn’t been inspected yet as it’s Friday afternoon.

50 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2024

The contact owns a 2013 Honda Accord. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel independently jerked to the right. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and was diagnosed with a defective electric power steering (eps) gear box. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not covered under warranty or recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 124,419.

51 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2023

The steering system failed/malfunction. When turning the wheel counter-clockwise, the steering wheel jerks and temporarily shuts down the vehicle even while driving. Steering wheel has failed during the middle of a left hand turn in multiple intersections. Very unsafe and scary situation when the car does not respond or perform any inputs when the drive is trying to correct/move the wheel. The steering wheel stiffens and is unable to be moved for a few seconds while the car is on drive. The problem has been confirmed by the dealer but stated since there are no codes provided, they are unable to service the vehicle and are unsure what that issue is and what may be causing it. Vehicle has been inspected by multiple Honda dealerships, no one is able to determine what is causing this issue they can reproduce it) no warning lamps or messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. Issue first became apparent and has been getting progressively worse about 2 year ago (150,000 miles).

52 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2023

Lost ability to steer vehicle. It was impossible to steer the car. The car was running on and in one instance moving at low sped in my own driveway. There have been 3 instances when this happens. The problem went away after turning the car off and restarting the vehicle. 2) the starter won’t start on occasion as it takes multiple attempts to start vehicle. 3) I had to replace the starter and also a sensor forward collision sensor so the entire dashboard display for every light would turn off. Literally, every light on the dashboard turns on, even for low tire pressure. The bidders concern from operation perspective is the steering. There’s no doubt in my mind that this is a critical and serious defect with this make and model of the 2013 Honda Accord. I looked online and there are literally thousands of reports of the same issue. There are complaints of uncontrollable steering too. One gentleman did a youtube video demonstrating what’s happening. I will do the same for the steering in this vehicle the next time it happens. Why hasn’t the NHTSA issued a mandatory recall and forced Honda to make this recall happen now. I hope this isn’t a political decision because I know lives are in serious jeopardy with this loss of ability to steer the vehicle with no warning. Lastly, I’ve bought and owned 5 Honda in my lifetime: 3 Honda Accords, 1 odyssey and 1 pilot and I’ve never needs to file a complaint in the past as they’ve always been a reliable, safe vehicle. I’m extremely concerned about this problem and I urge NHTSA and Honda to do the right thing and issue an immediate recall to remedy this issue. You are now aware of this issue in a formal complaint and it appears that there are already several thousand complaints based on what’s online. Please take action.

53 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2023

The steering suddenly became hard to turn right on a freeway going at 60 miles per hour (and came to normal in about 10 seconds) and then in about 10 more minutes when I took a left turn exiting the freeway, the steering remained stuck going left and had to pull it back to center with some effort. Got it checked with a Honda dealer and they say something is wrong with the eps system, where some torque value at rest is incorrect. There is a 13 year extended warranty for eps torque sensor but only if certain codes show up. Unfortunately those torque sensor dtc codes do not show up on my vehicle and they say it could be a shorted eps motor and hence it's not being covered in warranty and the current recommendation is changing the entire steering rack and I'm asked to pay out of pocket. There are lot of eps complaints for 2013 Accord.

54 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2023

Pretty sure it has something to do with the electrical power steering. The car will randomly steer to the left by its self it will do it driving or just running it does it all the time. I have videos and paper record of eveything from multiple sources. It could kill somebody and hurt others in the process. It wouldn’t let me upload the files. If they are needed.

55 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2023

The steering wheel stopped turning smoothly and would occasional turn toward the right erratically. The car is available for inspection upon request. Since now the steering wheel will occasional move on it's own or become more difficult to turn, the car is now more difficult to drive and thereby more of a safety risk. The steering problem was confirmed by a local mechanic. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representative regarding this issue. There has been no warning lamps or messages on the dashboard in regards to this steering issue.

56 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2023

In December 2022, I took my 2013 Honda Accord sedan 2. 4l ex 4-door to the same Honda dealership where I purchased the vehicle new in December 2012. The car had 81. 5k miles on it then, and the issue was with steering and having to always hold the wheel tightly with pressure to the right as it consistently wanted to pull left. After confirming this was not an alignment issue, the Honda dealer put it up on the rack and confirmed the wheel turned quickly all the way to the left, even when idling (I have video of this). There were no stored trouble codes so they performed a torque sensor clear and steering torque learn, which seemed to fix the issue. Note there is a warranty extension (from 5 to 13 years) by Honda for the eps torque sensor (dtc 53-01 or dtc 53-03), for all 2013-14 Accords; however my vehicle did not show either of those diagnostic codes. Now in November 2023 (83. 4k miles), the steering has failed again, pulling left but also suddenly becoming tight while steering and then suddenly going slack; at times if I let go of the wheel (safely), the wheel rotates quickly all the way left exactly as it did when up on the rack under a year ago. Took it back to the same Honda dealership service department and, after being asked if I knew I was supposed to drive with two hands on the wheel, left the car with them to check out. The same issue occurred for them. They said they hadn’t seen this issue before and didn’t know if it was an issue with the rack or the control module (which are separate components on my model), and that they had to call the Honda engineers to find out where the issue was and what to work on. A day later they were told the rack was the issue and needed to be replaced. The rack itself is $1800 and with labor would cost over $3k. I looked online and saw that many others with the same make/model/year had posted that they have these exact issues, which makes it seem that there is a major (and unsafe) flaw in Honda’s design.

57 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2023

Electronic power steering failure. Pulls dangerously to the left after failure. Very hard to steer, no eps warning light or indication of any problems prior to failure.

58 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2023

While driving down the road my power steering went out without warning and then light came on, I turned the car off/on several different times and the power steering is still out. I was able to make it home without incident but that was not a safe feeling.

59 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2023

The contact owns a 2013 Honda Accord. The contact stated while driving 30 mph, the power steering became inoperable. The contact stated that the vehicle was difficult to steer. The contact stated that the steering wheel was pulling to the left. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who replaced the power steering unit. The local dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was not notified about the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.

60 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2023

While driving on a straight roadway the electric power steering indicator light came on and the steering became very difficult. I was able to steer with effort to the side of the road and park. This incident just happened an hour ago and has not yet been checked by a service center. My husband met me, started the car and drove home without further incident.

61 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2023

Daughter driving in speed lane in indiana at speeds over 70mph- steering locked up completely as she was surrounded by semis. Thank god she responded and handled the situation - ahe could have been killed. Now car is in repair on what is known to be common failure, but no recall. She is 6 hours away from vehicle now at college. Part will take 8 weeks. Honda doing nothing to provide her with a vehicle. I am sick Honda has not issued this as a recall. She could have died. This is very common problem.

62 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2023

My eps light came on and could not steer the car. It would not turn either left or right. I had car towed to garage who told me power steering rack. I called Honda dealership who told me I had o have it towed to them. I had towed to them and they told me eps control unit. The only warning was the eps light. Why is my car not part of 15-550 or 15-056. There has been numerous issues with this year make and model when will it be resolved now that I’m having to pay $1300 and over $300 for towing.

63 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2023

Car power steering wheel was not function, I couldn't turn the power steering wheel and the wheel was shaking, luckily it's not happened while I was driving, the problem occurred when I started the car, there was warning lamps on the dash boards, it happened a few time and I was scare to drive the car. Car was towed to dealer and dealer diagnostic code 34-05 power relay stuck off, it costed me $920 to fix, I saw online so many complains with this model year about the same problem, my car only has 80k miles and always service at dealer. I wrote to Honda corporation and open a complain, they want me to sent all the dealer papers and proof of payment, they said I could get help with the payment in 9 weeks, after 8 weeks I follow up with them and they said they didn't get the paper ( I sent through email reply like they told me) so I took my time and re- sent the papers again, took a lot of my time to upload all the paper they required. Finally they said they got it and the manager will contact me, I got a called and the manager said they will have to confirm with the dealer, took another 2 weeks and after that they call me and said Honda corporation will reimburse me only $300, took another two weeks to finally get a check from them, totally 3 months from the time I open a case, what a joke! please have this car recall and make Honda pay for all the fixing cost since this happened to a lots of vehicle on the road.

64 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2023

The contact owns a 2013 Honda Accord. The contact stated while driving 25 mph, the vehicle started jerking upon depressing the accelerator pedal. The check engine, the vehicle stability assist (vsa), the electric power steering, tpms, forward collision avoidance, and the lane departure warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 162,000.

65 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2023

My family and I were driving home then out of nowhere the steering wheel turned all the way left and after a while it went in random directions. If my hand was off the wheel anytime while driving the car would’ve crashed into the side rail or another driver. There were no warning signs that this would happen and there are no dash lights indicating a problem.

66 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2023

The abs module failure all of the dashboard light are on due the a faulty abs module, youtube and other Honda forums reported the same problems. The abs module is poorly designed the connectors are very thin and they break apart with the vehicle vibration, the abs dashboard light, steering control dashboard light, traction control dashboard light, tpms dashboard light all are in the abs module control unit. Honda need to issue a recall for the abs module failing after 35k miles of its vehicles its a safety issue and it should be dressed. Thank you.

67 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2023

Vehicle steering wheel will turn left or right. If there isn't correcting the steering wheel vehicle will not drive straight.

68 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2023

The abs module has failed. I am receiving warning lights on my dash which caused me to pull off the road. After online research, I discovered this is a common problem with this make/model. So much so, that there is a national backorder for this part. My mechanic says that I can drive the car and the abs system will not work in the event that I might need it. Online forums tell me that the system might activate and cause the brakes to lock up. This seems very unsafe to me and a widespread problem that Honda should address.

69 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2023

The electronic power steering sensor has malfunctioned. If you are driving the car forward, out of nowhere and without warning the steering wheel will pull violently to the left into incoming traffic.

70 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2023

During normal driving, power steering would become more or less sensitive. This was especially noticeable during turns, where the steering wheel would suddenly jerk hard into the turn, sometimes requiring both hands on the wheel to counteract the excessive turn rate.
