To whom it may concern. We bought a new 2000 model year Honda Accord in Nov. 1999. At 22k miles (may-July 2001), the gas pedal git stuck when the car was not used for a while, like first thing in the morning. We had to step on it hard and released quickly. Then it was good for the rest of the day. We report this to the dealer (leith Honda). They fixed it and I have the report. A few months ago this problem re-occured. We have about 44k miles now. Leith Honda charged me $85 to fix it. They did not charge us the first time. Their reason is that my car is out of warranty and this sticky gas pedal problem is caused by gasoline. They further claimed that all other vehicles have the same problem because of the gasoline. They told me that I have to bring the car it and clean the throttle body on a regular basis. Otherwise this sticky gas pedal problem will continue to occur. I have so many car in the last 25 years and never heard of this kind of news. I am very concerned about the safety caused by the sticky gas pedal. What would you recommend me to do to fix the problem? I have names of the service manager and mechanic who performed the "cleaning". I also have report on hand which show the "repair" work. Please contact me if you need more info and fact. Thanks for your looking into this matter. Best ragards, kien.

53 Accelerator Pedal problem of the 1999 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 06/25/2000

The consumer stated 1999 Honda Accord I had carbon build up in the throttle, which is resulted in the throttle sticking. Regardless, of how long the vehicle sat, when the consumer gave the vehicle gas, the throttle stuck. It did not matter if it was in reverse or forward. This problem was intermittent, and has been happening for the past 4 to 5 years. This has been reported this to the dealer. They suggested that she bring it in for a throttle cleaning, which she did. The mechanic from the dealership told her that she would have to have this done again because it would continue to happen. The consumer called the dealership and the manufacturer, and they have been of no help. And often refer her to have the throttle cleaned again at her cost. At this rate, the throttle would have to be cleaned every few months. At this point, the throttle is sticking and needs to be cleaned, but the owner suggested that this should be covered by the manufacturer as a safety improvement or recall.

55 Accelerator Pedal problem of the 1998 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 01/01/2000

In January 2000, I took my Honda in to the tricket dealership to have a sticking gas pedal repaired. The mileage at that time was 35, 187. The pedal would stick and require a hard punch with the foot to come loose. The dealer cleaned the throttle and told me it was caused by a Honda floor mat. This resolved the problem at that time. I removed the floor mat. On January 16, 2002 I took the Honda into the same dealership and reported my gas pedal was sticking again even though I used no floor mat on the driver's side. The dealership cleaned the throttle again with a charge to me of $35. 18 which seemed to take care of the problem. When I asked why this element had failed twice, at first I was told it was bad gas, then the dealership admitted 98-99 Honda Accords had recurring problems with the gas pedal sticking. The dealership told me this was not dangerous because the gas pedal did not normally stick wide open. I guess dangerous is a matter of opinion. A gas pedal stuck half way down could potentially cause an accident. When I called the national Honda customer service, I was told to get the throttle cleaned as part of my normal maintenance. I would like to know if other Honda owners are experiencing this dilemma. It appears to me to be an obvious design flaw and Honda should be correcting it. I am also concerned about later model Honda Accords. I certainly don't want to purchase a new problem. Any assistance you could provide would be appreciated. By the way, my Honda is a "lx" model.
