37 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2009 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 12/21/2013

Started from stop at light intersection and accelerated while making a left turn. After letting off accelerator and now going straight, found car was still accelerating at full throttle. Began heavily stepping on brake with continued unintended acceleration continuing. Shifted from drive to neutral and rpm meter showed engine revving toward 7000 rpm and decided to go back to drive gear to avoid causing engine damage while still heavily stepping on brake. Unintended acceleration continued in drive gear and after several more seconds, I turned the ignition off while in drive gear. Engine successfully shut off and I continued to keep foot on brake and steering the car to a parking lot. After car came to a stop in parking lot, put the gear back to park mode and proceeded to start the car ignition (I have not touched the accelerator pedal at all since realizing the unintended acceleration had occurred). Car started as normal with normal idle speed in park. Drove the car to dealer and had dealer check for codes and take it for a test drive. Nothing abnormal was found during code reading and test drive. Dealer said that driver side rug could have caused accelerator to stick but this is not likely cause (in my opinion) because the accelerator pedal should then have still been stuck when I re-started the car in the parking lot.

46 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2008 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 04/02/2013

When accelerating to merge into highway traffic, car uncontrollably rapidly accelerates and revs up to 5000 rpms. Braking no matter how hard, nor pumping brakes did not stop car - may have prevented it from going faster, however; but revs remained high. Only way to regain control was to switch transmission to neutral and then back to drive. When problem first occurred, rapid pumping of brakes decelerated car and allowed to regain control; however, brake pumping did not work recently. Problem is intermittent and thus, dealer could not replicate even when complaint occurred during first year of ownership - and in fact, did not recur for more than 1 year after warranty expired.

49 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2008 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 01/23/2013

Subject: sudden unintended acceleration at about 9:25 pm, on Wednesday January 23, 2013 I was parked in the north parking lot of the vienna metro station, in fairfax, virginia, awaiting arrival of my wife. I had parked in the first parking space, across from the waiting area in front of the metro station entrance. When I saw my wife emerge from the entrance of the metro station, I started my car and shifted to drive. The engine suddenly revved up and the car lunged forward, accelerating at high speed and out of control. I remember reacting by applying the brakes with all my might and engaging the hand brake without much effect. The car lunged forward about 100 feet and hit a concrete barrier which smashed the front and engine and totaled the vehicle. Luckily there were no other cars or pedestrians in the vicinity otherwise there would have been more severe consequences. When I regained consciousness, I had been transported to the fairfax hospital and had suffered severe trauma to the neck, throat, larynx and mouth area and was bleeding from a cut on the chin. Two days of intense examination at the hospital and several follow-up medical exams found no evidence of any physical or medical condition that could have possibly contributed to the accident. It must be noted that I did not receive any citation for the accident from the fairfax police.

50 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2000 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 12/14/2012

I was pulling into the parking space after driving the vehicle for 45 mins (approx. 20 miles). When I was ready park the car and switch off the ignition, the car suddenly accelerated way too fast and hit the building in front. I was driving into the parking space at less than around 10 mph as I had to make 3 turns within 100 feet before coming into vacant parking space. My leg was also in the break pedal as I made those turns after getting into the private property from IL rte 83. I can definitely confirm that my leg was not in gas pedal as my right leg was on the break pedal to make those turns and stop the car in the parking space. It all happened in the matter of few seconds and there was no time to react. The car came to halt only after hitting the building. Both air bags deployed as soon as the car hit the building and there was heave smoke inside the car. It was really scary because by looking at the damage the speed at the time of accident looks to be around 50 mph. It was a relatively higher curb in front and the building was just 6 - 8 feet away from the curb, I was also driving into the parking space at less than 10 mph. I am really shocked to see this kind of unintended/sudden acceleration happen with Honda Accord cars which could prove to be fatal for the driver, passenger and pedestrian alike.

Failure Date: 08/13/2012

While pulling out of parking space with vehicle in reverse the vehicle suddenly accelerated causing me to crash into another vehicle parked in the same lot. I am an assistant service manager for a Toyota dealership and I am totally aware of sudden acceleration problems re recent Toyota problems, my mats were not involved [as were some found with the Toyota problems] and I am 100% sure that my ,foot was on the brake and not the gas pedal . There were no injuries, however the rear of my car has quite a,bit of damage. . I noticed a slight similar problem the week before but that did not continue so I discounted it. When the vehicle leaves the collision shop, I will have my technician fully check this problem out, as he is very familiar with this condition previously mentioned Toyota problems of the same nature.

62 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2010 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

I am in a dilemma pertaining to my 2010 Honda Accord. I live in canada but I purchased a demo model from united states. During the last five years I had four incidents of unintended acceleration while braking. As I was slowing down at traffic lights or stop sign, the car suddenly goes into unintended acceleration with rpm running over 4500. I continued to press on the brake and changed the gear to neutral. The car continued to rev at high speed despite not pressing on any pedals, and the only way to stop it was to switch off the engine while the car is in neutral and then switch it on again after putting the car in p gear. I am 100 % certain that these incidents are not related to driver error as it has happened four times. I phoned american Honda and Honda canada and both brushed me off and denied ever hearing about it. They advised me to take it to the dealer. It would be very difficult to isolate this fault as it rarely happens (4 times in five years). I am worried about the safety of my family especially if my wife or my daughters are driving. I will be grateful if you can let me if other drivers have reported a similar incident for Honda automobile. I also need some advice on how I can resolve this. Is this a software problem?.

63 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2012 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 02/01/2012

From a standstill or speeds up to approximately 20 mph when the accelerator pedal is depressed there is a delay in the response and then an unexpected and sudden acceleration occurs. This problem does not occur frequently but often enough to be considered dangerous. When I reported the problem to the service department of the Honda dealership from which I purchased the vehicle, I was told this was a problem with the computer determining what gear the vehicle was in and what you were asking the computer to do and there was no fix for the problem. I was also told to just "gas it" when the problem occurred. This is a dangerous and unsatisfactory solution to the problem. If the problem occurs when pulling out slowly into traffic one could be hit from behind by another vehicle or if you suddenly "gassed it" you could lose control of the vehicle and hit a vehicle in front of your vehicle or possibly a person standing close by. When I asked if this was a problem in the entire Honda line I was told yes and also was told this was a problem with all of the latest model vehicles not just the Honda line. I sincerely believe this is a dangerous problem which should be addressed and fixed even though the dealership said it could not be fixed.

Failure Date: 03/09/2011

This is a report of an incident of unintended acceleration of a motor vehicle which is related to an accident which occurred on March 9, 2011. The vehicle involved is a 2000 Honda Accord se. The driver was reversing out of a parking space when the engine revved up and the car started to move backward very fast. The driver stepped on the brake and tried to put the vehicle in neutral but the vehicle went into drive and lurched forward at a very high rate of speed uncontrollably across the sidewalk, three(3) lanes of traffic, through a lawn where it first struck a brick building, removed a 30-inch landscape boulder, and then struck a second building which stopped it, traveling over 200 feet before coming to a halt in a public alley. All of this happened in only a few seconds and the driver could not stop the vehicle because the brakes did not help. It was a miracle that the driver was not hit or killed going across the highway. It is very important that this incident be investigated.
