36 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2008 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 01/28/2010

Purchased my Accord new off the lot. 1st problem came exactly 1 month later 2 sensors had to be replaced. Oil light consistently stayed on I was having to change or add oil all the time. Ive been to every Honda dealer in san diego. Mission valley finally agreed to a oil consumption test but they assured me nothing was wrong. Their solution was anytime I needed oil I could stop by any Honda dealership & they would be happy to top it off for me. Because of this oil problem & the sensor consistently staying on the car began to lose power & shot out the timing belt. My car has been in my driveway since last july2015. After sending Honda numerous letters ron from Honda motor CO finally contacted me. Final result his recommendation was to take the car back to the dealership for another oil consumption test to be done & if theres any other problems I would have to pay out of pocket. Because the car was only covered for 60,000 miles. I'm so over this car & Honda. I no longer feel safe driving a Honda!.

38 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2000 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 11/07/2005

The case # is n012005121900955. This is my story: I was driving north on I-5 in heavy traffic. When I slowed down to about 40 miles an hour my car just died. I was able to barely able start the car and slowly drove off the off the road less than 50 feet. I barely made it off the road. I had no clue happened. Up to that point car ran good. Fortunately I was on the far right lane. It could have been disastrous with all the traffic. I wonder if any accidents have been caused by harmonic balancer coming loose and loosing all power? both fan belts were off. Upon further inspection by the hi way rescue team, he noticed that the harmonic balancer was not inline. I called tacoma Honda the following morning and inquired about the harmonic balancer coming loose on Honda engines and the service manager said he hasn't heard any problems. So I had the car towed to a mechanic friend of mine, VIN, and he repaired. VIN informed me that he worked on one who had the same thing happen about the same day on a 1999 Honda with less miles. Also his friend had a harmonic balance come loose on a prelude. I don't know what year this car was made. This cannot be just a tacoma, washington problem. I asked the parts manager about harmonic balancers coming loose and he said he has heard of it. A harmonic balancer should never come loose for 2 reasons. One, it is tighten so tight that you can not loosen it with a impact wrench. Two, it turn against the direction of the thread. This is what carla told me this morning that she is not aware of any problems similar to what I experienced. I will wait for a week for any feedback from you. If your research finds no problems with harmonic balancer coming loose I would like to know. You should be able to find out how many harmonic balancers has been sold or replaced. I will write to NHTSA to see if this is a fluke that happened in tacoma or more widespread.

46 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 09/08/2003

1999 Honda Accord ex (VIN: jhmcg667xxxxxxxxx). Opted not to drive on freeway that evening due to rush hour traffic, took back streets (probably would have been killed on freeway). Suddenly engine started to make loud noises & engine died; lost power steering. Check engine lights & all panel lights came on. Tow truck arrived, driver discovered belts came off & the pulley was broken. Bolt attaching it was sheared off & broken in half, too. Submitted anomaly to Honda corporate (case # n012003-09-1001253)(ph # (800) 999-1009) to review case once our local Honda dealer completes repairs. Corporate Honda offered "goodwill assistance" if case deemed valid enough for them to pay for some if not all of the costs. Have not heard from them yet. Honda dealership noticed pulley was also warped. They have never seen anything like this before. Reported car had 56k miles, but mistaken; should be approx. 65k. I think this is a safety issue and not just "wear & tear"; more like a design flaw or something! we have an 1987 Honda with no problems & its pulley does not even wobble like it is doing now in the 1999 since it has been repaired. It's still on a trial basis for 1 week starting 9/15/2003. To continue further may cost us an add'l $3k out of pocket with no guarantees from the dealership.

(1) a. Window being scratched by something in panel. Both driver and passanger window. B. At about 16000 miles it was noticed that the transmission was leaking so badly I couldn't drive out of the dealership. ( I believe the car may have been leaking since purchase. New with only 36 miles. ) c. Trunk liner sagging. D. When making left hand turns if you have the sunvisor out it can swing and hit you in the head. E. Passenger door latch not activated. Could not open door from inside. (dealer forgot to install this on window repair. ) f. Motor mounts not installed correctly. G. Belt tensioner needed replacement. H. Car pulling to the right. F. Black seal around door frame warping. (2) no consequences from any of these failures. Except loss time having to leave car overnight for several days. Who know what longterm effects of a leaky transmission, belt tensioner, and improper motormounts have on the car. (3) under warranty the dealer corrected every problem. Mosts times more then one repair for the same problem was needed to correct the problem. For the tranmsission the dealer tried to stop the leaks with Hondabond. The next morning I had leaks in the drive way. They had my car for a whole week on the first fix attempt. Finally Honda replaced the transmission with a new one. Nothing was done about the visor because the dealer said if they install a new one it will do the same. My windows are still being scratched by the felt lining in the window panel.

52 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1996 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 03/03/2003

Problems with vehicle's fans being inoperative and an oil leak. The consumer was advised as a precautionary action to replace the timing belt, water pump, all the drive belts, and front end work. The consumer then complained that the fans did not work properly. The consumer than was advised that the vehicle needed a front engine mount. The consumer noticed an oil leak. In fact, there were several leaks and the vehicle needed a new fan, shroud, motor, coolant, and fuse. As a result the temperature gauge repeatedly approach a dangerous level (had to modify driving habits), and was unable to use the a/c due to possible overheating. There were two new locations of high concentration of oil; rear main oil seal leak where the transmission was removed, and the balance shaft leaked (under warranty) which required an oil pump, gaskets, and seals.

54 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 12/13/2002

1999 Honda Accord lx (VIN: jhmcg665xxc015188) while my wife was driving in a residential area at 25-30 mph (approx), the engine started making clanking noise and engine died. She let it rolled, pulled over and parked on the side of the street. We discovered that the main pulley broke loose and the drive belts came off the rollers due to a broken (sheared off) bolt that attached the pulley to the crankshaft. The car has only 61k miles on it and I thought that it was totally premature. The ball Honda service rep told us that Honda motors CO. Will not cover for the repair since the warranty expired, but this is totally premature I thought, and maybe it was caused by inferior material (bolt) and/or by poor quality workmanship (over-torque'd). The car has had regular maintenance service by Honda dealer and has no previous engine work done except for the mfr recommended regularly-scheduled services.

55 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Honda Accord

On 9/19/02, I was leaving a store when my car started to make a rattling sound. I then lost power steering, all of the warning lights came on and the car stalled. I popped the hood to find that all of the engine belts had been thrown. After two days at the dealership, I was advised the crank bolt (key way and crankshaft pulley) had failed. The Honda dealership (don carlton, tulsa, ok) could offer no explanation as to why it happened, only that I was out of warranty. My repair bill was $536. 61. I also incurred a $57. 34 tow bill to get the car to the dealership.

57 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Honda Accord

60 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 07/28/2001

Crankshaft bolt appears to be sheared off. That held the pully in place which holds on the timing chain and 2 other belts. I contacted the Honda corporation who was in touch with wilde Honda and was told that there is no defect with the bolt. I have spoken to many other mechanics and they have said that it is most likely due to the factory torqueing the bolt down to tight which may have caused a stress fracture. Wilde Honda also said that it was due to the air intake filter being changed and the tires being worn. I find that hard to believe and have been told that ,thatis highly unlikely. Would you please check into this and let me know if there are any other cases like this. Thank you.

66 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1997 Honda Accord

67 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1996 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 09/30/2000

While stopped at a traffice light, the oil pressure light started flashing. I immediately pulled into the nearest business I thought would have a mechanic, which was a quick oil change type place. Oil was pouring from my engine. Seals and belts had to be replaced, including the timing belt so the repair was over $500. However, my car was still leaking oil (which it had never done before). Soon after I received Honda's balancer shaft seal recall info in the mail. The problem described seemed to be precisely what happened to me. I took my car to an authorized Honda dealer to have the repair inspected and to have the oil leak checked out. I left with another $250 bill and the mechanic felt that my problem had not been the balancer shaft seal because the mechanic at the quick change place incorrectly listed a part replaced as an oil seal on the invoice. The mechanic who did the original repair told me that it was definitely the bal shaft seal that he had replaced and offered to consult with the Honda tech. Honda tech was unresponsive and uninterested in hearing from the mechanic. After I sent in all the documentation and request for reimbursement I recently received more info from Honda, which instructed me to again have my repair inspected by a Honda dealer. Again I left with a $450 bill in another attempt to fix the persistent oil leak. I have submitted all the info and invoices to Honda and am waiting on reimbursement.

68 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1996 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 09/29/2000

Same exact incident happened to another car I owned, Honda Accord lx 97, at the same mileage range (59k-60k). Only with Accord 1996, I was fortunate enough to stop on time, and was able to save the engine. Whereas, in the Accord 97 situation, I was too late, all of the oil came out, and engine was irreparably damaged. The cost of repairs for Accord 97 was $2,000, it required a whole new engine + oil pump, change of seals and belts. According to the Honda Accord manuals, maintenance (change of timing belts, etc. ) on the car should be done at around 90k miles, excluding the regular oil changes. Therefore, both incidents were not related to a delayed maintenance, but to an irregular failure of the oil pump and the oil seal. Both cases are identical on similar cars and deserve to be investigated.

69 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1996 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 09/15/2000

While traveling at approximately 40 mph, my oil light came on. Thankfully I was just reaching my destination. I got out of the car and saw that oil was pouring out of it! had I driven this way, According to my mechanic, my engine would have been destroyed. I had to replace all of the oil-soaked belts, etc due to this part failure. I have seen spoken to several people who have had the same problem (one of whose car's engine did "blow up"). The local Honda dealership told me that this was a commonly known defect in the seal. This particular seal is generally changed at around 90,000 miles when the timing belt is replaced. Unfortunately, the dealership says, many seals break 15-20 thousand miles prematurely causing major damage to the vehicle. I have been told this particular part may be recalled in the near future; I feel this would be an appropriate action for this situation.

70 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1996 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 09/14/2000

While driving, oil light indicator suddenly started flashing. Pulled off highway and proceeded to nearest gas station. I told the gas station mechanic that my oil light indicator had suddenly started flashing. Gas station mechanic opened up the hood and checked the oil. Dipstick came up dry. All oil had been lost. Gas station mechanic proceeded to put two quarts of oil in vehicle. While doing this gas station mechanic noticed that there was a major oil leak. He informed me that there had been reports of a defective oil seal in 1996 Honda Accords and he advised me to take the vehicle to the nearest Honda dealership. At that time, I contacted my insurance company who provided towing services. Vehicle was towed to ed morse Honda on us1 in fort lauderdale, florida. I advised mark greene, service attendant at ed morse, of what had happened. I also told him that the gas station mechanic had mentioned a defective oil seal. I left vehicle at dealership and they promised to call with an estimate. When mr. Green called back with the estimate, he informed me that the oil seal would not be covered by Honda. The cost to fix the oil seal was $510. Mr. Greene also recommended replacing timing belt and water pump for an additional $170.
