3 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2018 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 02/12/2021

At highway speeds, 55 mph or faster, on several occasions the steering becomes difficult to hold the car in a straight line. The steering becomes harder than normal to initiate a turn of the steering wheel. After applying more pressure than normal, the steering wheel will suddenly move causing a larger than desired steering correction. Because of the extra-large steering correction another correction will be needed in the other direction, but the steering resist turning in the other direction until extra force is applied to the steering wheel, then the steering wheel will suddenly move and cause an overcorrection in the other direction. This problem has only happened after driving the car for more than an hour, usually after 3 hours. The steering problem can still be present after stopping at a rest area and turning the car off, but when the problem does finally go away it is always after the car has been turned off. The problem when present does not always cause the same resistance to turning the steering wheel. Sometimes the problem is slight and others it is very severe to the point where it is very difficult to keep the car in the lane using 2 hands there are 19 complaints on the NHTSA website for the same problem with the 2018 Honda Accord. Feb of 2020 flow Honda of winston-salem replaced the rack and pinion and I didn't have any further problem until recently when on a trip from nc to FL when the steering problem reappeared. After stopping at a rest area for a 15 min. Stop the steering problem was gone. This was the first occurrence of the problem since the rack and pinion was replaced. On the NHTSA website there are 2 people who complain that their steering problem reappeared after the rack and pinion had been replaced. On Feb. 8, 2021 I returned the Accord to flow Honda of w-s for the 4th time and was told there was nothing they could do.

4 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2013 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 11/22/2019

I was getting off the highway and was driving home along the service road when I noticed the steering wheel automatically turned on its own, causing me to almost crash into parked cars. No lights appeared on my dash and it was out of the ordinary. Luckily I was off the highway driving at low speeds, otherwise I would have injured multiple people. The steering wheel became so hard to control requiring you to grip the steering wheel to turn it. Once you let go of the steering wheel, it would turn really fast on its own to the right. I tried turning on and off the car, unplugging the battery, but the issue was still there. I took it to the Honda dealer and also contacted corporate in which I was told that the rack and pinion is bad, and if the car doesn't show a code, they won't cover it. My car only has 46k miles, and a big safety issue like this should have been covered or partially covered. Instead, I was told it was going to be over $3k for install and parts, which is ridiculous.

5 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2007 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 08/04/2019

I've had my power steering pump and rack & pinion replaced. Power steering is still tough, feels like I'm turning the wheel with 40lb weights on each side of it. Suspension is failing, hitting a bump makes my car feel like the suspension is pushing up and makes it float momentarily and makes a slight noise while driving. Both cv axles failed front side at the same point of that rubber grommet in the middle, water gets trapped under it and makes it rust out. . . . Both of them snapped while I was driving at different points.

6 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2012 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 07/17/2019

I have been driving Honda (accord) cars for over 40 years. Now I own a Honda crosstour. Great car! I do not drive very much and only locally. My average annual mileage is about 7,000 miles. My crosstour is 7 years old now and has just reached 53,000 miles. Yesterday I was told that I I need a $1,600 repair to replace the "rack and pinion". Apparently a tiny piece is broken on it. This is very troubling. Even the auto repair told me to contact Honda as this should be under warranty. . My car has always been maintained by Honda dealerships. This problem was noted when I went for an oil change. I contacted Honda dealership and was informed that the rack and pinion is not under warranty and that new parts are not made. I would be required to buy a re-furbished part. I do not understand this at all. I do not understand how such a serious part of the vehicle, with only local mileage on it, cannot be under manufacturer warranty. And, I was shocked to learn that only "used parts" are available. I am a loyal Honda customer for many many years. I am a 75 yr old, senior citizen on a limited social security income. I would like to hear back from a representative from Honda's customer loyalty department who can please help me!.

7 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2013 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 04/22/2019

While backing out of a residential driveway onto a busy neighborhood street, the steering wheel locked up and the steering malfunction warning light came on. I attempted to steer the vehicle but the electronic power steering(eps) was countering the steering effort. I tried multiple times to restart the vehicle in hopes to regain steering control, but the vehicle would not operate properly. The only way I was able to regain steering control was with the car off and in neutral, meaning I had no ability to accelerate to maneuver the vehicle from oncoming traffic, relying only on the momentum of the sloped road to help guide the vehicle safely away from traffic lanes. I had the vehicle towed the the dealer the next morning. Service adviser looked up vehicle history and the recall for eps controller software had already been performed 2 years prior. Honda had extended the warranty on the rack and pinion system due to known torque sensor failure issues. Adviser said if, obd scan shows fault code relating to torque sensor failure, Honda would cover complete cost to replace entire rack and pinion system. Hours later, adviser contacts me and says the scan shows that it was not the the torque sensor that failed, but the electronic power steering computer failed and needed to be replaced at my cost. I argued that there was no possible way for the consumer to prevent such an issue from occurring, and the fact that a computer system controlling the steering failed while I was operating the vehicle is an alarming safety issue that american Honda should look into and I should not have to bear the burden of paying for such a repair. Vehicle has 83,100 miles, original owner and all scheduled maintenance performed at same dealer. Never had prior steering issues and was never advised of any potential issues. Honda sympathetically only agreed to cover half the repair cost.

8 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2015 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 03/14/2019

Driving on hwy steering began to pull. I attempted to correct when I noted steering was more difficult. I was able to pull off the hwy but found when I stopped I was unable to turn the steering wheel at all. I then called my husband and informed him of my situaton. The dealership says it's the rack and pinion power steering. I only have 19,000 miles on this vehicle.

9 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2018 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 10/29/2018

When driving more than 25 miles in a day my steering wheel will stiffen up and then it will release with a jerking like motion ( almost similar to a rack and pinion issue in an older vehicle). It progresses throughout the drive making it difficult to continue the trip. Honda has been made aware of this and said it's the way the suspension is set up, however it shouldn't be stiffening up and jerking as it could cause an accident to happen. Honda is currently in possession of the Accord trying to determine if there's anything they can do. They've had the car for 17 days as of this posting. With all that said, I keep all the driving support features disabled. This steering issue happens on city streets and highways during the time of maintaining a certain speed from 25+ mph. It's quite scary to drive under these circumstances. The 2nd issue I've reposted since purchasing the Accord is I also have to keep the collision mitigation braking system turned off when as soon as I remember to disable it after each startup as I've had sudden stops by the car at a nearby railroad track and a highway sign that goes across a major highway in texas which I was going 45mph. Due to the fact it thinks there's something in front of me and stops the car. I've had whiplash twice from the cmbs system alerting the car to come to a complete hault. I've been fortunate that no one was behind at the times of these incidents, but one day I may not be so lucky.

10 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2010 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 11/29/2017

The steering rack (rack and pinion steering) assembly broke on my vehicle. The steel bar used to make this part should not be able to be broken let alone in the manner that it did. It sheared and there was no warning when it happened. It wasn't hit or under extreme strain. I am highly concerened this may be a serious safety issue for others in the future. Thankfully I was not traveling at a high rate of speed when it broke. Please look into this issue.

11 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2013 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 11/25/2017

While on vacation in the mountains of tennessee the eps indicator came on the instrument display. That was failure of the power steering! it came on when starting the car after driving it for a short slow drive, which seems to be the major contributing factor--slow speed with acceleration. After having the software updated (which did not fix this issue) I am being told only the rack & pinion portion of the eps has been extended to be covered by Honda and not the eps control unit which is the code my car is showing. Excuse me! the steering of a vehicle is a major deal. Honda should fix this and be glad to do it. This is a huge safety issue and should not be taken lightly. I am being told the repair cost is about $750. This has really put a bad taste in my mouth for Honda; this is the fourth Accord I have owned but will probably be the last one. Shame on Honda for not standing behind their vehicles and components. Shame on the NHTSA for not forcing them to recall these cars and keep us all safer on the roadways when the complaints are numerous for the same issue!.

12 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2012 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 06/02/2017

Leaking is observed at rack and pinion.

13 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2012 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 11/08/2016

31,000 miles rack & pinion is leaking According to the dealer. With this low mileage and year of the car its a safety issue. Looks like a manufacturing defect.

14 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2009 Honda Accord

15 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2009 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 05/06/2015

While endeavoring to make a slow speed maneuver, the steering wheel was not responsive by power assistance. It eventually came back to normal. Concerned I took the car to a mechanic who suggested replacing the power steering pump. Replaced the power steering pump with a Honda remanufactured and flushed system with genuine Honda power steering fluid. Never was anything found in the fluid that would contaminate the fluid or cause system blockage. Problem seemed corrected for several days. It resumed again. Went back to my Honda dealer. At the Honda dealer it was suggested that I needed to replace my rack and pinion setup. This is a costly repair! I have had 15 Hondas and never had to have this done. The problem is progressively becoming more pronounced. It comes at varied times during the operation of the vehicle.

16 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 1999 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 09/01/2014

My 1999 Honda Accord had a strange passenger-side body sound while driving at low speed. I went to the local mechanic who said the passenger side sub-frame was thoroughly rusted. I spent $3300 total to replace the sub-frame with a new one from a Honda dealer for $982. 18 and two days of labor for $1100. The mechanic and I both reviewed the internet for Honda Accord recalls on this sub-frame for the 1999-2002 model years. I was surprised there has not been a recall as I was lucky to notice this before it became a serious safety hazard. As the mechanic replaced this labor-intensive sub-frame, the rack and pinion assembly also was totally rusted and need replacement - the assembly costing $417. 49. Also a major leak occurred in the power steering pressure hose that had to be replaced with the part costing $148. 89.

17 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2013 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 08/10/2014

2013 Honda Accord (20k miles) issue: defective rack-n-pinion I attempted to put my Accord in reverse and realized that I wasn't able to steer out of the driveway. It appeared that the steering wheel locked up or something was holding me from backing up. I also noticed an orange steering wheel indicator on my dash. (please keep in mind that my vehicle is in great condition. I've have it for over a year and I have never had this happen). I attempted to start my car a second time. This time it turned on just as before and the orange indicator light turned off. I felt it may have just been a fluke and I began driving down the street. However, not even half-a-mile down from my parents’ house my Accord steering wheel locked up again! this time it happened in the middle of the road while I was driving and while other vehicles were driving on the opposite side of the road. I could not maneuver my vehicle off the road. I just barely managed to angle the front part of my vehicle to the edge of a curb while the second half of the car was still in the street. Dealership informed me that it was a defective electric rack-n-pinion which caused my steering wheel to lock up. I asked him if this was a recall, or vehicle malfunction and he couldn't completely 100% provide me with an explanation. He did inform me that it’s going to be a $1,200 part to be serviced and that I will probably be without my own Accord for about a week. I strongly feel that the Honda corp should be aware of this issue, so I contacted Honda via twitter. I felt completely brushed off and the rep, he said well sorry to hear that sir but they are repairing the issue sir. This was my second and last Honda that I would purchase. I know I'm not the only one with this issue. Honda should definitely look into it. The rep told me that they haven't had this issue previously-doubt it!.

18 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2013 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 09/11/2013

The contact owns a 2013 Honda Accord. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the power steering assist malfunctioned as the wheels seized and the power steering warning lamp illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the rack and pinion assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 3,000 and the current mileage was 6,000. The VIN was not available.

19 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2006 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 08/28/2013

Upon driving the vehilce, the steering became very hard to handle. It seemed to be locked up. I tried to avoid a street sign as I panicked, but scrapped it with my drivers side rear door. I had my fiance bring me a bottle of power steering fluid after noticing the reservoir was empty. He filled it and asked me to start the vehicle. He immediately told me to turn it off because it was smoking from where fluid was shooting out of the power steering fluid hose above the rack and pinion. The vehicle was towed back to our home (5miles) because it was after local shops had closed. The local Honda shop said that my VIN didnt fall under a recall only v6 models and mine is a 4 cycl. Upon doing some searching I have found at least 6 NHTSA claims for 4 cycl. Nhtsa id number: 10525409 NHTSA id number: 10522947 NHTSA id number: 10480634 NHTSA id number: 10478592 NHTSA id number: 10478320 NHTSA id number: 10402670 the part numbers involved in the recall was 53713-sdb-a01, the 4 cycl is 53713-sdc-a02. These numbers are waaaay to close to not include them in the recall. Matter of fact, the 53713-sdc-a02 is also replaced with 53713-sda-a52, which tells me that an update was made. The local shop wants $300 for repairs, and the Honda shop wants $400 for the repairs. The 4 cyclinder should be included in this recall, it is unsafe and could cause a fire with the amount of fluid that was under pressure and hitting the exhaust. Power steering fluid is flamable.

23 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2007 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

My issue relates to the power steering system. This is something that developed over time, worsened, I paid boatloads of money over time, only to have it reoccur over & over. I've actually experienced other issues but since this is a safety issue, and I've paid good money to have repaired on a few occasions, only to be back at square one today barely able to steer the car I've decided to stick to this alone. This issue is probably as much an issue with defective power steering as it is with Honda not addressing my problem. In other words since from around 50,000 thru today this has been an ongoing problem which they only suggested to do one service, the problem temp would go away, only to reappear shortly thereafter dragging me back in all over again. High-pressure hose @ $58,000, almost immediately thereafter power steering pump that I waited till 72,000 to pay for, almost immediately thereafter the rack & pinion which I put off till 93,000 due to the cost and how much all of the other problems were costing me. Today the car has 104,000. I had all work done by Honda up to 85,000, but have tried to save money and have had someone else do the rack & pinion and a few other costly items since. I went back to Honda today for their opinion - net result - all of the above items have a bad leak and need to be done all over again - $2400 cost! the other thing I want to add is the recall on Honda Accords "high pressure power steering hose" - of course, the recall was not until after I'd already paid for the service - my car's hose went bad & needed to be replaced for the same reason as which all of the other Hondas were under recall for (the heat of the engine caused it to melt). When I heard about the recall I anticipated receiving a letter in the mail but never did - the reason was that the recall for the hose was for many other model years not including 2007 (my car year).

Honda says they will not cover the part because they say it cracked and there might be evidence of a hit. But the car has never had an acident and Honda says they will not cover the part. I think this poses a significant saftey thread. And if any body dies due to falure of this part in the future Honda should be charged.
