My used 2008 Honda Civic was overheating and I dropped it off at my garage for evaluation. On 2/14/2019, my mechanic informed me that my engine block was cracked and was under warranty. I contacted north american Honda, inc. And requested they replace the engine under warranty. They refused as the car was totaled and salvaged. I had never been notified about the problems with 2006-2009 Civic engines and the warranty. Had I been notified by Honda, when my car was totaled in 2014 because of a severe hail storm, I would have accepted the $10,000 from the insurance company and bought a replacement car. Since my car in 2014 was six years old, I thought that all warranties had expired long ago and salvaging the car appeared to be a good deal. I got $10k and had a mechanically and operationally sound vehicle with low mileage. Research has since shown that hundreds of Civic owners were not notified and Honda routinely strictly enforces the warranty. For four years Honda was selling a defective car and doing everything possible to hide from the public. Many owners recounted the car just shutting down on them. I often drove in 70mph speed limit zones on the PA turnpike in heavy commuter traffic. Had my engine shut down suddenly there was significant possibility that I would have been killed in the subsequent accident. This was obviously a serious safety issue. I cannot understand why NHTSA did not force Honda to issue a provisional recall. Also, Honda should have issued an unlimited warranty instead of restricting the warranty to 10 years from date of purchase. It appears to be a case of unfair and deceptive business practice at best and outright fraud at the worst.

This is car 2. On the 10th of August, I took the Saturn in after I had placed the call to [xxx] the gentleman that sold me the Saturn, about the car not working properly. I was then given a 1997 Honda Civic, I resigned what the loan papers and left. I had to pay to transfer the plates from one car to the next. Well it is sad to say that on 8-12-13 the car shut off while I was in the center lane of i95, with 2 children in the car and another adult doing 70 mph. I coasted to the shoulder of the highway, [xxx] is closed on Sunday; I waited until Monday I placed a call to [xxx]. I spoke with [xxx]and explained what had happened. Today 10-15-2013 I got up and called [xxx]. I then decided to go to the shop. When I got there all of the parties where there, and I asked what would happen with the car. I was informed that they could fix the engine for about $1500-$1800. That was not an option for me as I felt that there is no way that I should have to replace a whole engine after only having it for two months. I was told that the dealers?? hands were tied. I was past my warranty of 30 days or 1000 miles. Keep in mind I was past my warranty the first time as well. I was told that there is no way for them to tell if the engine is bad before they put it out there to be sold. The dealer then began to tell me that in a 60 day period I drove the car 4000 miles I replied what does that have to do with anything. I told him there should be no reason that I have to replace a whole engine within a two month period used car or not. All I wanted was a reliable car that is safe. This business didn't provide that. I went in to resolve this matter face to face, as well as emailed the owner. All I wanted was a reliable car that works properly, and I don't want to lose the money that I have already put in to what I thought I was getting in the first place, which is a safe reliable car. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Engine shutdown without warning while driving.
The contact owns a 2006 Honda Civic. While at the dealer for a routine inspection and oil change, the vehicle was found to be normal. Later that same night, while stopping at a traffic light, the engine shut off and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle restarted minutes later, but would stall every time she came to a complete stop. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and the engine's air filter was cleaned. The failure was due to the filter being extremely dirty. The old filter was placed back in the vehicle and there had been no further occurrences. A local mechanic stated that the failure possibly derived from a defective brake light switch that sends signals to the vehicle's computer regulating the engine speed. The manufacturer stated that the failure would have to be duplicated before they could offer a solution. The powertrain was unknown. The failure mileage was 29,880 and current mileage was 29,914.
