Daughter was driving to work on 27 Dec 09. On her way she began to smell smoke in vehicle, but attributed it to the outside air. Upon arriving at work, she went into the building put her personnel items away and went outside. A few of her CO-workers told her that her car alarm was going off. She went back into the building to retrieve her keys, went to her car and found out that the alarm had stopped, but there was smoke in the car. At that time she open her trunk and found an open flame fire in the vicinity of the passenger side rear speaker. At which time she called geico (employer) security, called 911 and security put out the flame with a hand held fire extinguisher. Vehicle was returned to hughes Honda, warner robins, GA on 28 Dec 09 for disposition. Later that day I was informed by the service manager that he could not do anything and I needed to contact american Honda. American Honda than informed me that this was not their problem and that they were not going to communicate with me and/or do anything about this and that I needed to report the claim to state farm insurance. Multiple attempts by myself and state farm led to Honda not responding to any request and a decision was made on 21 Jan 10 that state farm was going to get the vehicle repaired at central georgia collision, but I was going to have to tell hughes Honda to release the car to them. I went by hughes Honda at 1115 hours 21 Jan 10 to inform them of such and was told by the service manager (by cell phone) that Honda had removed my car and was going to take care of the problem. Talked to general manager and owner of hughes Honda on 29 Jan 10 and told them that this was not acceptable in that no one had investigated and informed me of where the fire started, what the ignition source was, how this impacts diminshed value and was the car safe. Picked up car on 4 Feb 10, with Honda informing me that this was all they were willing to do and the only reason the car was repaired by them was to get parts.

23 Ignition problem of the 1999 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/13/2009

Good afternoon, I have a 1999 Honda Civic lx, when I'm driving at the speed limit or idling at a stop sign, the engine just dies for no reason. You lose all power steering control and power brakes, etc. This too me is a major safety issue and could quite possibly get me (or my teens who drive it) rear ended or cause you to lose control, crash and be killed. I have confirmed (from Honda) that my electrical ignition system is faulty and it is shutting off by itself due to a defective switch, cause; Honda) there is too much power going through the switch. (I can actually remove my key while I'm driving. ) there is a recall by Honda on this switch which was posted in may 2002 for all Honda Civics from 1997 to 2001. All Civics were built in canada at that time. 1,000,000 were recalled. However, my car is not included in the recall ( my VIN # not in the recall, in canada it was all cars recalled). Honda reps tell me they don't know why my car is not in the recall. I have the same exact symptoms as in the recall. In canada, they recalled and repaired every single car in that country. Why not my car? because it was sent into the USA? I'm filing a major safety complaint against Honda USA and I want my car fixed by them. The cost is $ 153. 00 for the switch and 195. 00 for labor. I'm ready to elevate this complaint if necessary, news organizations, etc if you direct me to do this. I hope you can help me and all the people in the USA who own a Honda Civic for those years, have a bad switch but, their VIN # isn't included in the recall. I hope nobody dies before this safety problem its fixed. Thanks in advance for your help!! you guys at the NHTSA are awesome!! have a great week!!.

Srs airbag light indicator went on suddenly on ignition and never turned off. Brought to dealership who said the srs fuse box needed to be replaced as it wasn't under warranty anymore. Other Civic's also have multiple complaints of this. Front passenger window also moves up real slow almost to a halt sometimes using both driver and passenger power window switches. 29 Ignition problem of the 2004 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/19/2005

I bought my 2004 Civic lx 2 door, thinking that I would not have the problems of a used car I was certainly wrong. The first problem was that I never received a copy of or signed the pre delivery inspection check list. I had my car up to the dealership at just over 3,000 miles for its first alignment. Then, I had problems with the car not starting. Sometimes it would start and sometimes it wouldn't. It didn't depend on the temperature outside or the amount of gas in the car. Sometimes when it would start, it would crank out as if I was letting out the clutch too fast. But on many attempts to restart the vehicle it would crank, but would never turn over or fire. Had the car up to the dealership once again for the starting problem , but they said since there weren't any error codes, there was nothing that they could do the car seemed fine. My latest problem; at just over 9,000 miles, I just had my front left wheel bearing replaced. ! once again my alignment was done. Everything has been covered under warranty. But what is going to go wrong next??? I certainly wouldn't recommend a Honda to anyone I know.

32 Ignition problem of the 2002 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 10/13/2004

Serveral times while driving car stalls. There is no telling as to when and where car' s engine will cutoff and how fast I might be going. Car has stalled when driving at speeds of 60mph. I lose power steering and I have to coast to come to a stop. No battery light or any other lights display on the dash. Once car is put back into park the car starts with no problem. This is a very serious safety issue and the Honda dealership continues to guess as to what the problem may be. They told me that my keychain is the problem and that I should just use the ignition key by itself. I just don't want to get involved in a serious accident which can cost my life or anyone else's.

Manual transmission jumps while driving also does not want to go into second gear. Makes wierd grinding sound while driving slow. Car shutters and shakes violently while in 5th gear in excess of 70 mph. Car shuts off by its self( was told VIN not in sequence for ignition recall). Right front springs sticks and some times makes a ( " boing" ) sound. Car keeps pulling to right even after alignment. When heater or defroster are on they make a loud chirping sound. On cold or rainy days steam will pour out of engine compartment smelling like radiator fluid. Was in 2 minor accidents one front end colision one rear end colission both about 30 mph and air bags did not deploy. Engine is becoming rusty and coroded. Drivers power window is slow to go up and front seat belts will not retract. Engine light comes on and car loses power and gas mielage. Goes offf when gas tank is filled. Car has been to dealer numerous times for Honda scheduled service and also while it was under warranty. All the problems adressed above were told to dealer who said they could not find a problem. . But they sure did when my warranty expired. Now they will not fix anyhting unless I pay for it.
