2 Electrical System problem of the 2012 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 08/05/2025

I am reporting a serious safety concern with my 2012 Honda Civic hybrid. What component or system failed and is it available for inspection? the hybrid drive system and regenerative braking system are malfunctioning. The hybrid battery recharging system including the mpi have failed, causing the vehicle to operate solely on the gasoline engine. This results in degraded braking performance due to the loss of regenerative braking. How was safety put at risk? when the hybrid system fails, braking performance is noticeably reduced, increasing stopping distances. This creates a high risk of collision, especially in sudden-stop situations or heavy traffic. Additionally, the sudden loss of hybrid power assistance can cause unsafe changes in vehicle acceleration and handling. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes. The issue has been confirmed by pearson Honda in midlothian, virginia. They state the mpi needs to be replaced and state my VIN is outside their "factory warranty extension". Multiple calls to Honda America state that I am responsible for all repairs and that this is not their problem and will not clarify how they decide what VIN's are included in the extension. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by others? the vehicle has been inspected by pearson Honda in midlothian, va and documentation is available. It has not been inspected by police or insurance representatives at this time. Warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to failure? yes. Warning lights for the hybrid system and/or ima (integrated motor assist) illuminate promptly as you start the vehicle. These first appeared last week (8/4-8/8/2025) and have occurred multiple times since.

3 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 08/04/2025

Honda Civic 2018 ex keyless with bcm failure. Alarm won’t deactivate, engine won’t shut off. Only solution is battery disconnection. Issue reported in 2016+ models, Honda charges $1,000+. Full complaint: my 2018 Honda Civic ex keyless has a serious electrical problem. The alarm activates and cannot be turned off with the key fob. I have to use the physical key to silence the horn, but the vehicle stays in accessory mode. If I start the car, I cannot turn off the engine. The only way is by disconnecting the battery cables, which is very dangerous since the ignition stays hot and could cause an electrical short. Honda knows about this defect but has not issued a recall. They are charging customers $1,000+ to replace the bcm. This problem has been reported in multiple Honda models from 2016 and newer, including the Honda Civic. In my opinion, this is a clear safety issue because if the vehicle cannot be turned off in an emergency, it could cause a serious accident or tragedy. I ask NHTSA to investigate and hold Honda accountable.

4 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/28/2025

The electric power steering (eps) system failed/malfunctioned this past week. When going over 35 mph my steering wheel would become "knotchy/jerky" and lock up and be difficult to turn. As a result, I took it to Honda to which they stated my whole rack and pinion needed total replacement. No warning signs, messages, icons, or lights came on in my car.

5 Electrical System problem of the 2017 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/25/2025

The body control module (bcm) is faulty and causes the alarm to go off on its own, lights inside the cluster glitch turning on by itself and drains the battery even with the key fob nowhere near its vicinity when off. Sometimes does not recognize the key fob.

6 Electrical System problem of the 2021 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/21/2025

A recent electric power steering (eps) failure on my 2021 Honda Civic that resulted in a repair of the entire steering rack. I took my vehicle to vandedrgriff dealership for routine maintenance, including tire replacement, alignment, oil change, and a multi-point inspection. The car passed all checks and was deemed safe to drive. However, immediately after leaving, the steering became sticky and difficult to control on the freeway — a serious safety risk. Upon returning the next day, I was informed of an internal eps failure, with a repair estimate exceeding $4,584. 30. I later discovered this failure involves a part number tied to a known Honda recall. Although my VIN is not currently part of the recall, the symptoms and overall failed part match exactly. The failure occurred immediately after authorized dealership service without warning. The eps unit is associated with a known defect. The failure occurred just outside the 3-year warranty and before its time. An eps is guranteed good over 100,00 miles. The issue created a dangerous situation on the road. Honda America corporate has inspected the vehicle and refused to cover the repair because I am right outside of my warranty. I am a loyal Honda customer and trust in Honda's commitment for safety and customer satisfaction.

7 Electrical System problem of the 2017 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/16/2025

I am filing a safety complaint regarding my 2017 Honda Civic hatchback and the dangerous issue related to its air conditioning (a/c) system — a problem affecting many Civic owners nationwide. I initially brought my vehicle to Honda city chicago for a Honda “campaign” repair (a term they use instead of calling it a recall) in 2023 and again this year, related to the a/c system. I was told the issue would be resolved. However, after agreeing to an optional transmission oil change they recommended, I was later told the a/c still wasn’t fixed — and that I now needed to pay $400 for a diagnostic. That diagnostic revealed the actual problem: a locked a/c compressor. (which they knew they just wanted the money) this defect is not just an inconvenience — it’s a serious safety hazard. When the a/c is turned on, the locked compressor causes the engine to shake violently and stall completely. This happened to me at a red light; the car shut off, became unresponsive, and I was stuck blocking traffic. If this had occurred while driving at higher speeds, the consequences could have been catastrophic. Many Civic owners have reported similar compressor failures leading to engine stalls and unsafe driving conditions. Honda is aware of this issue but continues to treat it as isolated rather than a systemic defect. I urge the NHTSA to open a formal investigation into this widespread and dangerous issue involving locked a/c compressors in 2016–2020 Honda Civics. A safety recall is warranted before more drivers are put at risk or harmed due to this known defect.

8 Electrical System problem of the 2021 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/16/2025

With my steering wheel, when turning, the wheel will sometimes get “sticky”. Making it so I have to use extra force to get he wheel “unstuck”. Took it to my mechanic, they found a recall for the ‘22-‘23 year model Civics for this same problem. The electric steering motor can sometimes fault and cause the wheel to get stuck while turning. This was not for the ‘21 year. I called my dealership, they said there was nothing I could do as there is no recall for my VIN, although I’m having the exact same problem as the ‘22-‘23 models. He recommended I can the Honda 1-800 number. Pretty much got told the same thing. I was looking to get a goodwill extension, he said that would not apply due to Honda warranties. Next best thing was for me to be here filing a complaint.

9 Electrical System problem of the 2023 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/29/2025

On over a dozen occasions my vehicle’s check engine light randomly comes on and then my car stalls out while driving and begins decelerating quickly. It is very dangerous and scary when this has happened on the freeway or in places where there is nowhere to pull off the road. My Honda Civic is less than 2 years old and has already been in the service department at Honda for a combined total of more than 30 days. Honda keeps trying to replace things but the issue keeps happening and they haven’t been able to properly diagnose or fix the problem. It is unsafe to drive this car and Honda has been unable to fix it. I bought this car brand new with 0 miles and the issues started early on before I reached 20,000 miles. I attached one of the most recent invoices from Honda where they noted the fuel injectors failing and codes of misfires in all cylinders. They most recently tried replacing the fuel injector but it still hasn’t fixed the problem. This car is unsafe to drive and has been in the shop multiple times for more than 30 days for the same issue that they can’t seem to fix.

11 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/24/2025

While driving, the hood prop rod dislodged from its securing clip and fell onto the positive terminal of the battery. This caused an electrical short, which led to the rod heating up rapidly and igniting a fire under the hood. The fire damaged the headlight assembly and the surrounding trim panel, though the wiring fortunately did not catch fire. A nearby police officer was able to extinguish the fire before it spread further. This incident posed a serious safety risk and could have resulted in more extensive damage or injury. There were no warning lights or symptoms before the failure. The issue appears to stem from the design or failure of the clip that holds the hood prop rod in place. The vehicle has not been modified and was being driven under normal conditions. A local auto body shop inspected the vehicle afterward and confirmed that the loose prop rod made contact with the battery terminal, creating a serious fire hazard. They advised reporting this as a safety issue. The manufacturer has not yet inspected the vehicle. The incident was witnessed by a police officer, and the damage was evaluated by an independent repair shop following the fire.

12 Electrical System problem of the 2015 Honda Civic

When I first got the car. I had the cigarette lighter go out and the car had about 29,000 miles on it. The put two fuses and they blown. Now my car ac has went out. I have been told by a professional that the car sounds like it has a lot an electric issue. I have a friend who has the same issue with the same car with her carplay and cigerette lighter not working properly.

14 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/07/2025

While driving the dash showed a "12 volt battery charging system problem. " continued to drive to a safe location roughly a mile down the road and while enroute all the error lights illuminated and proceeded to state "tire pressure monitor problem" "brake system problem" "brake hold system problem" "power steering problem" and a couple others I don't recall. I lost my power steering while driving and my wipers proceeded to stop working, in a downpour. Contacted aaa who came and ran diagnostics which showed the alternator was dead. I then had to have my vehicle towed instead of driving it to work.

15 Electrical System problem of the 2015 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/06/2025

On on my dashboard due to a faulty malfunction in my abs module that can only be done at Honda dealership and has to be removed only by Honda and sent off for Honda to rebuild and then sent back for them only to replace seems ridiculous to pay $3000 for this when it's all over the internet that this is an issue this is a computer issue this is ridiculous that this isn't there is no recall for this for this for this Honda issue it's all over youtube this is the number one issue that's going around.

16 Electrical System problem of the 2017 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/04/2025

While driving my Honda Civic 2017, a loud static noise suddenly started coming from the vehicle’s audio system or speakers. The noise is persistent and does not stop unless I turn off the vehicle completely. This creates a significant distraction and could interfere with hearing emergency vehicles or other road sounds. This issue occurs randomly and is a serious safety concern.

17 Electrical System problem of the 2017 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/02/2025

After turning off the vehicle and locking it the vehicle continuously turns on to accessory mode on its own. On a few occasions I came out to a dead battery or have been woken up more than once to my alarm blaring in the middle of the nite and when I came out to check my vehicle it was usually turned on to accessory mode upon researching the internet I found that many owners with the 2016 and 2017 have the same problem which is a result of a faulty body control module within the keyless entry system. I have taken my car to Honda to be fixed it's been 3 days now with no solution on repairs yet. 6/7/25.

18 Electrical System problem of the 2012 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/01/2025

So according to Honda service bulletin 20-030, all Honda Civic 2012-2015 hybrids having ima motor power inverter (mpi) have to fixed. I have the same car, same model, same year and same error codes as the service bulletin and this is such a serious electrical power inverter issue. Yet Honda is denying to work on it, even though there is 15 years or 150,000 miles warranty for this specific issue and my car has 95000 miles. Yet Honda is trying to run away from fixing it by claiming the VIN number is not associating whereby my car is exact same as the model, year and issue for the given service bulletin. This is complete absurd and consumer rights are being thrown away by Honda. I am very sure that my united states NHTSA, state consumer protection, federal trade commission, all are going to help me and make Honda pay for this. I have attached the service bulletin and here my error codes on the car: p1437 motor drive module (mdm) short circuit poa78 tmu-l motor power inverter module internal circuit malfunction p15a5 motor current sensor circuit malfunction clear confirmed & pending trouble codes 2 pending trouble codes poa78 tmu-l motor power inverter module internal circuit malfunction p15a5 motor current sensor circuit malfunction clear confirmed & pending trouble codes ^ ^ 2 permanent trouble codes poa78 p15a5 motor current sensor circuit malfunction tmu-l motor power inverter module internal circuit malfunction.

19 Electrical System problem of the 2014 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 05/22/2025

While driving at high speed on the freeway at 65mph, my Honda Civic hybrid experienced a sudden and complete electrical failure of the hybrid battery control module (ipu/mcm). This happened without any warning lamps, messages, or prior symptoms. The hybrid system instantly shut down, causing a dramatic loss of power and forcing me to pull off the road in high-speed traffic. This placed me and other drivers at serious risk of a high-speed collision due to the abrupt power loss and inability to accelerate. The failed component is still installed and available for inspection. The issue has since been diagnosed and confirmed by an independent hybrid specialist, who identified the malfunctioning ipu. I was told this exact failure is covered by Honda service bulletin 20-030, which extends the warranty for affected Civic hybrids to 10 years or 150,000 miles, however, my VIN is not included, despite the failure being identical in nature. Honda has refused to provide any assistance, stating that only specific vins are eligible, which I believe is misleading and unjust. This defect is clearly broader than the TSB acknowledges. The sudden failure of a critical propulsion system at high speed without warning is a major safety hazard and should not be limited by an arbitrarily narrow VIN list. I urge the NHTSA to investigate this issue and require Honda to expand the scope of TSB 20-030. This defect compromises driver safety and has caused me significant financial and emotional stress, not to mention the danger it poses to others on the road. This is not an isolated incident. Many other Honda Civic hybrid owners have reported the exact same issue, sudden ipu failure, no warnings, dangerous loss of power, on public forums and complaint databases. The narrow VIN range in TSB 20-030 is artificially limited and fails to reflect the true scope of the defect.

20 Electrical System problem of the 2025 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 05/20/2025

On 5/20/25 while pulling out of my house's driveway I saw a warning on my dashboard that the brakes were malfunctioning, that it was unsafe to continue driving, and to stop as soon as possible. The brakes were soft and I could feel and hear a grinding noise when I stepped on the brake. I returned the car to the driveway. The vehicle was towed the same day to the dealer for service. The car was repaired on 5/23/25. The repair invoice states: "electric brake control internal circuit malfunction. . . Brake hold simulator not pluging. . . Replaced simulator set (part#:01469-t61-a02). Car was tested after repairs. " (purchased on 4/4/25. ).

21 Electrical System problem of the 2016 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 05/16/2025

My manual key…it wasn’t program. I just found out when my battery died and we won’t able to open the door manually. And when I told the dealer where I bought it, they were charging me to program it. And it cost a lot, so, I didn’t had it done. Then, just two days ago, my car won’t start again. I just got a new battery from aaa. So, I have to call them again and re check it. The battery was fine. So, the aaa employee asked me to call you or email you. Coz prolly I have a recall problem with my car. Honda Civic 2016 sedan. I always have this problem with the battery and the manual key.

22 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/26/2025

Steering began to "stick", especially at highway speeds and when trying to keep car centered in lane, causing frequent overcorrection and difficulty maintaining lane control. No warning lights, messages, etc. Dealership confirmed and the diagnosis was that the motor powering electric power steering was faulty and steering rack needed to be replaced. First noticed the issue during summer of 2024, became progressively worse, dealership diagnosed and repaired in may 2025.

23 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/25/2025

25 Electrical System problem of the 2017 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/10/2025

I drove home from work today like normal. Pushed the engine start/stop button before getting out of the car. The radio was still on, and the dash was still on, with accessory mode, push "start/stop" twice to turn off, or something similar to that. I pushed the button twice. It went to accessory mode. I started the engine, drove the car out of the drive way, came back, pushed the button to turn off the car. . . Accessory mode. Turned the car on, turned the car off. . . . Accessory mode. Moved the keys all away from the car. Started the car (which I could do because it was still in accessory mode) and drove the car, meanwhile there was a big warning saying there was no key fob in the proximity. Parked the car, pushed the on/off button. . . . Accessory mode. I have tried everything I can think of, the car wont lock. It wont exit accessory mode unless its in full on start. Someone could come along and steal my car because I cant turn it off. All I can do is disconnect the battery and after 2-3 days I connect it and it works just temporarily. This is not ok and unsafe especially when I have a new born and stranded in the middle of the wors place due to this issue.

26 Electrical System problem of the 2021 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/07/2025

Our battery died in April 2025. We've had this car since October 2021 with only 8 miles on it. We've replaced: the pcv valve the pcv valve tube the maf sensor the sparks plugs 3 times which was $90 each time replaced our battery 2 times since April 2025 3 oil changes and finally replacing our entire fuel injector system with the hard fuel line. And replacing the battery the first time is what revealed all these issues because we kept getting codes on our obd-ii scanner of p0172, u0038 and u0100. Honda told us once the fuel injectors were replaced then our car would be fixed but that is not the case. The car can't travel further then 5 minutes before the spark plus burn. We replaced the spark plugs on Sunday morning and we went to the store and they were charred after that drive same day.

27 Electrical System problem of the 2025 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 03/20/2025

On [xxx], at about 3,500 miles, the subwoofer speakers in my 2025 Honda Civic hybrid sport touring began rattling persistently at moderate volume (14-15), disrupting the entire audio system. The component malfunctioned, no ‘failure’ in the traditional sense, but it renders the sound distorted and unusable, far from the advertised premium sound quality on Honda’s website. It’s still in the vehicle, available for inspection if requested. This doesn’t directly risk physical safety, no crash or injury, but it severely impairs the driving experience, as the audio system is a key feature I rely on, now reduced to a constant, irritating rattle. The problem has been reproduced and confirmed on all the other vehicles of the same model and trim at the dealership where I bought it, Honda mall of georgia in buford, GA. I took it in for repairs twice, first on March 25, then again on April 2, and it spent 7 days in the shop total. Both times, the rattling persisted unchanged. The service team acknowledged it’s a model-wide defect affecting other Civics of this trim, yet no effective fix was applied. The manufacturer’s regional representative inspected it indirectly through the dealership and declared the rattling ‘normal,’ refusing further action. The service manager promised an engineer would investigate, but that never happened. There were no warning lamps or messages prior, just the sudden onset of the subwoofer speakers on the rear deck rattling on [xxx] with no earlier symptoms. It’s been consistent since, worsening the audio with every use. The dealership’s confirmation of a widespread issue, paired with the manufacturer’s dismissal, points to a design and quality control flaw they won’t address. This isn’t a one-off; it’s a systemic problem ruining a core feature that’s been happening for a decade now with the top tier trims of Honda Civics. I request an investigation into Honda on why it hasn’t rectified this issue when Honda promotes “premium sound”. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act.

Honda did a software update on my vehicle tied to the recall below. The dealership stated to me that they need to replace the vsa modulator and they are claiming this is not covered since they did the software update a few years ago. I believe they are directly corollated as I don't drive the car much only have 27k miles on the car. They are asking me to the pay for replacing the modulator vsa and are stating that this is not covered under the recall. It's hard for me to beleive how they are unrelated if the software is causing the unit to malfunction and we know the unit needs replacement there is a direct connection. This is costing me $2500. The standard oem key fobs for Honda Civics, for several model years, and possibly for other Honda models, have a "feature" that seriously affects driver and passenger safety, and that cannot be disabled. If two buttons are depressed simultaneously on the key fob for a period of time, all of the windows go down and the doors unlock. I have encountered dozens and dozens, perhaps hundreds, of owner complaints about this "feature" on various internet bulletin boards. Typically, the stories go, "I parked downtown in an unsafe area and I came back to my car and found that it was unlocked with all of the windows open and someone stole everything from my car," or "I parked outside just before a rain storm and I returned to my car to find all of the windows open without my knowledge and the interior of my car was soaked. " single women could encounter this problem and be attacked by people hiding in the back seat. Apparently, if anything in one's pocket depresses the keys on the fob, without one's knowledge, this occurs. It has happened to me, where I'll bend down to tie my shoe and walk away and I'll return hours later to find all the windows open during a rain storm or in a bad part of town. I've asked american Honda numerous times for a way to disable this unwanted "feature" and they've said that they've not interested in addressing it unless they're forced to do so by the government. This is a serious safety issue, not only implicating potential crime, but a wet soaked car interior could affect electrical and navigation systems in a life-threatening way. If you respond, I can upload several internet pages with owner comments and complaints about this problem.
