36 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1997 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/15/2000

The engine light came on and I took it to the shop to determine the cause. They told me that the exhaust manifold had cracked. They also told me that this is a common occurrence for the Honda Civic. The cost of repair will be over $600. 00 provided that this did not damage the oxygen sensor. If that is the case, then the cost will be an additional $100. 00 to $200. 00 more. Given that this is a common occurence, I felt that it may warrant further reporting to your organization.

37 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 07/15/2000

I began the process of having the car repaired on August 14, 2000. By today, August 18th, the Honda dealer had mentioned to the repair shop that iam having the work done at that they had ordered 6 of these manifolds. On Monday when I had called the dealer for parts, they did not have the manifold in stock. I belive that this could be a sign of a major defect. Although it does not directly pose a threat to me physically, it could allow exhuaust fumes into the vehicle. I would like to presue the manufacture and attempt to have them replace the part.

38 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1997 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 05/25/2000

After vehicle warms to operating temp. And the rpms are between 2000 and 3000. The vehicle bogs down, releasing the throttle or pushing in the clutch pedal and the vehicle idle is normal. If the throttle is pushed down and the rpms rise, the problem goes away. When this occurs the vehicle can bog down and then straighten out the speed will resume to where it should be. This is an intermittent problem with no rhyme or reason associated with it. I have had the vehicle in the shop several times and have asked countless number of people. Internet search had shown that other people are having the same problem and no one has an answer as to the cause or the relief. This has been happening as long as I have owned the car and I noticed it the first time I drove it. I bought is used and it had no warranty. Vehicle needed exhaust manifold and tires when I bought it. Nothing else was mentioned. I feel this is a hazard, as it is unpredictable and it has occurred in parking lots, as well as on the open road. I have read other people having this problem and it seems to be only with the Honda 1. 6 liter sohc vtec 16y8 engine. This is the engine that I have in my Civic ex.

40 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1999 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/05/1999

1999 Honda Civic lx, developed engine noise, diagnosed as "something loose", not to worry, get it fixed at next major service interval. Check light came on at 82,000 miles, due to a failed O2 sensor. Discovered noise was due to a cracked manifold. Probably what caused the sensor to fail. Appears to be a known manufacturing defect. Dealer and Honda USA say this is only warrentied to 80,000 miles, estimate about $700 to repair.

47 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Honda Civic

In regards to the exhaust manifold crack--- I noticed an exhaust smell coming into passenger compartment and noticed that the engine compartment was slightly louder than usual. I got used to the smell but now I just get headaches. I figured it needed a new exhaust manifold gasket but upon further inspection before buying a gasket, I noticed a crack in the exhaust manifold where the pipes come together under the heat shield. The crack looks like it stems out in different ways from the oxygen sensor; it is probably due to poor design. I figure that it probably impairs the functionality of the oxygen sensor thus altering emmissions. I contacted Honda and found out that a new exhaust manifold costs over $700 dollars just in parts, which I cant afford. I found that Honda extended the warranties on the 1997 models due to the same problem and found that the 2002 Honda Civics' are equipped with stainless steel manifolds rather than the cast iron found on my car, therefore I know Honda is aware of the problems and they should fix the problems before the crack stems all around and my exhaust system falls off causing further damage or causes me to fail a smog check. In regards to the rear passenger windows, the buttons don't work thus not allowing rear windows to be rolled up or down.
