36 Radiator problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/01/2015

While my family was driving on the interstate west to California, at 65mph, the engine power was completely lost. Upon pulling over I opened the hood after about 3-5 minutes to find coolant fluid all over the engine. I attempted to start vehicle but it only turned over without starting. We towed it to service center at colfax, CA to find out the next day that the engine has severe internal damage from leaking coolant fluid. The source was not located yet with no signs of radiator damage. The car has been towed 90 miles to reno, nv Honda dealership for further evaluation. After researching possible causes, I discovered a service bulletin (TSB 10-048) that addresses an engine crack leaking coolant and causing engine overheating. I have been advised that my Honda is not covered according to VIN inquiry and awaiting an appointment to look into cause. The engine dashboard gauges never indicated anything out of the ordinary to warn occupants of pending catastrophic engine failure.

37 Radiator problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 01/04/2014

Was driving car up to states and vehicle started to cut out. Took to shop and car was diagnosed with blown head gasket. Could not get car to states (was in rosarito mexico) so had head taken out and took it to states for valve and head job. Mechanic down here replaced and then said car has cracked block. Drove car up to states where independent certified shop said cracked block. Towed to pacific Honda and they diagnosed car with bad radiator and timing chain off by 4 teeth putting blame on work done in mexico. My mechanic in mexico was a certified mechanic in states before retiring. No independent shop will touch the car now because of cracked block but Honda will not admit to it. I don't know who to turn to now and I just bought the car a year ago. I have been without a car for one month. Honda does have an extended warranty for coolant seepage but state this is not my case.

38 Radiator problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 12/18/2013

Car engine was running "rough" upon start for 2 days; worked out after driving 1-2 miles. Drove 15 miles and stopped to fill up with gas. Less than 1/4 mile after fill up,engine light came on. Had car towed to mechanic who had performed last oil change and major service (a month or so previously). Mechanic identified problem with #4 cylinder. Mechanic swapped spark plug in #4 cylinder with spark plug in #2 cylinder. Less than a week later engine light on again. Problem again with #4 cylinder. Replaced all spark plugs and engine air filter. One week later, heater stopped working. Next day, radiator (coolant) gauge on dash moved up past mid-point and hits 3/4 point. I stopped driving and had a friend bring coolant which was 1 gal low! (note: mechanic checked and found coolant level full when car was in for engine light problem less than a 10 days previously. I drive less than 15 miles per day. . . All low speed. I park off street and have car in one spot for 9 hours during work and never saw any fluid on parking spot. ) added coolant. 1 week later (coolant) gauge on dash moved up past mid-point and hit 3/4 point (after driving 5 miles at 45 m. P. H. Or less). Stopped driving. Checked coolant level which was fine (full). That night got letter in mail from Honda saying that 2006 - 2009 Civics may have cracked engine blocks. All "symptoms" described in Honda letter matched what I had been experiencing (unexplained/undetected coolant loss, overheating, engine problem as evidenced by dash indicator). Brought car to Honda dealer. They said no problem with engine block. I asked them to check radiator thermostat. They said no problem. They could not explain why I lost coolant. I am in process of getting second opinion because I do not believe that Honda is committed to fixing the problem (which obviously is a manufacturing defect).

39 Radiator problem of the 2003 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 11/29/2013

My vehicle has been going hot since November 2013. I have replaced the water pump, radiator, fan switches, head gasket, valve gasket seal/cover, engine. When I'm sitting idle in traffic for a while it will run hot or at least appear to run hot because the temperature gauge will go all the way to hot. I have read a few blogs and spoken to a Honda specialist and he confirmed what I read about Civics ranging from 2001 to 2004 are notorious for running hot. I was told that you have to replace everything like the water pump or radiator as well as the head gasket at the same time to stop this from reoccurring. I have spent thousands of dollars trying to repair this issue. I just want Honda to be take accountability because it is not an isolated incident. This matter needs to be looked into and a recall should be created. These are some of the blogs I have read. Thank you. Https://answers. Yahoo. Com/question/index;_ylt=a0levjuvdznt5zuauwwpxqt. . 40 Radiator problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 11/04/2013

On November 4, 2013, I was driving thru at a mcdonald's when my engine steamed over, spilling antifreeze. I towed it to my brother's house as I was at least 100 miles from home. He applied a coolant pressure tester to the radiator and found a leak coming from the engine block. I had the engine replaced by him. I filed a claim with Honda under the recall to get my money back. Honda refused to pay the claim, even though recall 10-048 from Honda offers to repay customers for their expense by warranty up to 8 years and unlimited mileage. At the time the car was 7 years, 1 month old. I claimed this to Honda in August 2015, was denied in September, 2015, reason given was that my brother is not qualified as a professional mechanic to diagnose, but a coolant leak is easy to find with a pressure tester and my brother has worked on engines for years. I am out $1700 from this repair.

41 Radiator problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 10/17/2013

Brought vehicle in to dealership due to leaking (green and brown fluids). Was told that engine block was cracked and needed to be replaced, along with the radiator. Was told that tires were showing wear that should probably be replaced soon and was told this was possibly due to the control arm issue in 2007 Honda cars causing uneven wear on tires. Paid for new tires and labor for install. Paid for new radiator and labor for install. Was not charged for control arm part. Was not charged for parts/labor on cracked engine block. On 11/11/2013, brought vehicle back to dealership due to continued leaking. Was told that clamp on the radiator had not been tightened properly.

42 Radiator problem of the 2010 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 09/13/2013

Submission from constituent re to file an official complaint against Honda motor corporation, also including rusty wallace Honda in knoxville and cookeville Honda service departments as official warranty servicers (full doc not imaged). The consumer stated the vehicle lost power and stalled. The dealer stated the consumer hit something, which caused water to leak, and the engine to blow. The consumer refuted the dealers conclusion. The consumer took the vehicle to another dealer. An inspection revealed, the engine was blown, because a bracket punctured the radiator. The dealer informed the consumer the vehicle had been in an accident and after market parts were used, which voided the warranty, the consumer had. The consumer stated the vehicle had a clean carfax report.

43 Radiator problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/14/2013

While in heavy traffic on the highway during a traffic jam which was caused by an accident, the car broke down with no warning. There was a check engine light and nearly immediately the car stopped working entirely, so stranded for 3 hours on the highway waiting for a tow truck. Car towed to mechanic and was informed that the engine overheated - all the plastic pieces I. E. Dipstick were melted, along with parts of the radiator - the filler cap was clearly melted. There was no indication there was any overheating occurring during the problem - again, a check engine light and then the car immediately stopped running on the highway. Later it was discovered there was a recall/TSB for this model Honda for the engine block cracking and overheating. There was no indication of overheating at any time and the vehicle did not allow even for nursing the car to the nearby exit. It is extremely fortunate the car was able to get to the side of the highway in heavy traffic - just barely, still in a precarious position. After the dealership "fixed" the engine, provided horrible customer service, and refused to fix anything the melted engine destroyed (radiator) the car has been in the shop (dealerships and otherwise) multiple times for other items "not covered" with the melted engine TSB so I will be reporting anticipated break-downs in horrible traffic with no warning here as needed.

44 Radiator problem of the 2002 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 11/07/2012

The first thing was I noticed the temp starting to rise, immediately was shut off and radiator replaced. Few months later November of 2013, temp started to rise, didn't even get hot. Blown head gasket. It sat till July 2014, when a new motor was installed. Drove good until October 2014 when out of no where my transmission quit working! !.

45 Radiator problem of the 2008 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 03/04/2012

Car made an intermittent high-pitched whining noise. I noticed the engine temperature indicator was in the red. There was a smell of burnt anti-freeze. Checking the radiator and radiator reservoir showed there was no coolant. Had to put water in the radiator and reservoir to drive back home. Mechanic and dealership confirmed that the engine block was cracked causing all the coolant to leak out. The engine block has to be replaced. Fortunately I was made aware that Honda will cover this manufacturing defect and my cost should be zero.

The contact owns a 2006 Honda Civic. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after allowing it to cool and adding water to the radiator. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the engine block was cracked. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was awaiting a response. The failure mileage was 120,000.

47 Radiator problem of the 2005 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 10/03/2011

Coolant keeps leaking. Went online and found numerous other owners reporting the same problem. My mechanic can't seem to fix the problem neither can any of the other owners online mechanics. Replaced the radiator and cap, water pump, head gasket, etc. . . But it still leaks. Can you please look into this. There are a lot of people online reporting the same problem but there's no bulletin number in your database for the 2005 Honda Civic cooling system. Thank you for your time and have a nice day.

48 Radiator problem of the 2008 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 09/24/2010

The contact owns a 2008 Honda Civic ex (n/a). The contact was traveling 45 mph and attempted to accelerate when the vehicle suddenly began losing power. The check engine light illuminated so the contact pulled over to the shoulder and turned the vehicle off. The vehicle was then towed to an authorized dealer and the contact was informed the bottom of the engine had a crack. The service manager then called back and stated that there was a problem with the headers and the radiator was melted because the vehicle had overheated. The failure mileage and current mileages were approximately 32,000.

49 Radiator problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/26/2010

Vehicle overheated. Engine cracked as a result after putting coolant back into radiator. Vehicle has 56,000 miles on it. Vehicle stopped directly in the middle of a highway!.

50 Radiator problem of the 2007 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/14/2010

I was driving locally yesterday, and my car overheated. I pulled over and let the engine cool down, then checked the coolant in the radiator. It was empty, as was the reserve tank. After letting the car completely cool, I drove it to the local gas station and purchased some engine coolant. I filled up the radiator and the reserve tank, and drove home. I had an appointment at a dealer for today already, so I brought this up to them. They said it was a cracked engine block. This car is a 2007 Honda Civic lx, with ~65k miles on it. It's not even 4 years old yet. I'm waiting on the dealer to find out how much this will cost me.

51 Radiator problem of the 2003 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/11/2010

2003 Honda Civic ex. No heat in winter. Overheats in summer. Coolant overflows through reservoir. Several others with this same problem. Its not the water pump, radiator, thermostat, or lines. Honda must fix this problem.

52 Radiator problem of the 2001 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

I was diving down the hwy when my car would no longer accelerate. I was pressing the gas pedal and my rpms were shooting through the roof, but my speed was declining, as cars going 70mph were shooting around me. Then I came to a halt, and then my check engine light came on. I had no warnings, it came out of nowhere. I had my car towed to the mechanic. He replaced the entire transmission and stated it had something to do with the radiator not cooling the fluids, yet my car never read as hot. $3000 later I have a new transmission, which is not made my Honda. Honda failed to provide me with any information on this and seem "shocked" when I called them.

53 Radiator problem of the 2003 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 01/01/2007

New years day, I got off the freeway and my steering wheel locked and my clutch stiffened. Seconds later they resumed their normal feel but my battery and temp light came on and smoke/steam came out of my hood. I pulled over and opened the hood. . . Coolant resevoir was almost completely empty and coolant had exploded all over the engine. I had the car towed to the dealership for warranty review. They called and said no coverage, they believe that a rock had punctured the radiator and hence it was not a parts problem. Since, I have reviewed numerous complaints about rocks puncturing car internal parts, specifically Honda's. This is a poor design and in other circumstances this could have been a very dangerous situation. It should not take a death to call attention to a company who is selling cars which are not properly designed for highway driving conditions. Since I had just gotten off the freeway, I was able to pull over right away and cease any further damage. Parts and labor will cost me 1000. 00 for a 3 year old car that was bought with an extended warranty (which cost a couple thousand dollars at time of purchase). I am outraged and disappointed with Honda.

54 Radiator problem of the 2006 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 06/03/2006

About 2 months ago, the air conditioning on my 2006 Honda Civic stopped working. I called the dealer closest to my home garden state Honda in clifton and brought the car in for service. I spoke with sardi, a customer service representative and was told by the mechanic there was a rock embedded in the condenser and for $780 dollars they could replace it. There was no warranty protection for this year-old part! I then spoke to the service manager at the dealership. Reluctantly, the dealer admitted that this was not the only 2006 Civic that had seen this kind of damage. A little investigation on google revealed that this is a fairly common problem: Honda's design puts the fragile aluminum ac condenser in a location that can easily receive damage. There is no rock shield or any other guard to prevent this from happening. This is a clear and obvious design flaw, one that must be protected under warranty. The dealer informed me that even if he made the repair, another rock would inevitably hit the condenser without a shield and I'd end up paying $780 all over again. The car is under warranty; Honda has a major design flaw and should protect its customers. The dealer should fix the problem. I called the Honda corporate office to file a complaint. I was told after waiting 2 weeks that Honda would not fix the condenser. 8tr.

55 Radiator problem of the 2003 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/04/2005

2003 Civic, highway miles of 49,800. Car overheated very quickly on the highway, pulled over, got hotter and hotter with steam everywhere. Dealership towed it to their garage and gave us loaner car. Dealership extended 36000/3year warranty to 50000 by the way. Techs said they had never seen such a mess. Radiator literally *melted into the engine*, they said. I read about head gasket problems on some online Honda owner groups, so I asked if that is what happened, and they said it was definitely blown, but can't determine if that happened first or the radiator failed. It took them four days to determine that *maybe* a rock hit the radiator on the highway causing a slow leak. My insurance guy looked at the car and will not pay because Honda cannot prove any kind of highway *accident* happened. They can't even get it to leak or find a hole, but with pressure they can see a spot* on the radiator. And. . . They will not honor the 50000 extended warranty because I did not get every oil change and recommended service at the dealership. This car is not even 2 years old. We bought a Honda because it can take the high highway mileage. We even just bought a Honda van last month because of Honda's longevity and reputation. This car should not be blowing an engine at this age. This has to be some kind of defect.

56 Radiator problem of the 2000 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 03/20/2004

Manual transmission jumps while driving also does not want to go into second gear. Makes wierd grinding sound while driving slow. Car shutters and shakes violently while in 5th gear in excess of 70 mph. Car shuts off by its self( was told VIN not in sequence for ignition recall). Right front springs sticks and some times makes a ( " boing" ) sound. Car keeps pulling to right even after alignment. When heater or defroster are on they make a loud chirping sound. On cold or rainy days steam will pour out of engine compartment smelling like radiator fluid. Was in 2 minor accidents one front end colision one rear end colission both about 30 mph and air bags did not deploy. Engine is becoming rusty and coroded. Drivers power window is slow to go up and front seat belts will not retract. Engine light comes on and car loses power and gas mielage. Goes offf when gas tank is filled. Car has been to dealer numerous times for Honda scheduled service and also while it was under warranty. All the problems adressed above were told to dealer who said they could not find a problem. . But they sure did when my warranty expired. Now they will not fix anyhting unless I pay for it.

My new car, once smoked for no reason, last year, now at 40,000 miles my radiator motor was bad only 3 yrs old-out of warranty,Honda did nothing-get it serviced. My other Honda lasted 10yrs- I do not get it-after being hit by 18 wheeler.

58 Radiator problem of the 2002 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 10/06/2002

Consumer states that the alternator light illuminated. Dealer stated motor needs replacing. Mr radiator leaked out coolant and engine locked up due to short block and head failure. Thermostat failed and was replaced. Check the engine light came on and dealer replaced converter as a cause.

59 Radiator problem of the 2000 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 02/06/2000

Extremely disappointed. How can a 2 months old radiator be so fragile? Honda denied it was a defect by manufacturer which I have to end up paying $511. 65 for the replacement of radiator. I feel like being cheated and robbed.

60 Radiator problem of the 1998 Honda Civic

Fluids from the radiator are leaking, cause unknown. Dealer cannot identify the problem. Please give any further details.
