Bought vehicle in August, used with 136,000 miles. The first week, the a/c compressor went out. The 2nd week, the condenser. 2 weeks later the car stalled out. Check engine light, vsa and warning light came on. Was able to get it restarted and it was throwing 4 codes. P1009 61-1 62-1 83-1. Took it in under dealer warranty. The changed the O2 sensors and gave it back. 2 weeks later, same thing only now it was burning oil and gas and running really rich. The oil smells like gas even. They did a whole engine swap and a new starter, among other things. And 2 weeks later it stalled out again. And the crank shaft and vtec solenoid needed replaced. As well as the starter. 9 times I've had it and now after the same burning through oil and gas issues it's started smoking and making a grinding sound while idling.

My 204 Honda crv has a continuing problem with the vtc actuator. I've had 2 defective ones, which damaged my timing chain. Dealer says they are not liable for the damage done for the defective part, and I have to pay $1600 for a new timing chain at 70k miles. Honda issued a technician bulletin stating the vtc is defective, but offered no fixes to the problem other than throwing another defective product in the vehicle. When starting the vehicle, the vtc actuator makes a loud grinding noise, which is the sound of the timing chain being stretched. My timing chain is now ruined and needs a new one. This has been happening since I've owned the car. The noise now occurs almost every morning.

My vehicle is suffering from an extremely common problem within the 4th generation crv - the vtc actuator is making a grinding noise during cold startups. There is a active bulletin regarding the issue, TSB 16-012 ver. 2. The issue is further compounded by the fact that it does not happen literally every single time I turn the car on. It only happens sometimes. The dealership told me to leave it with them overnight. Then in the morning they will test it and try to duplicate the problem. If they can't duplicate it, then they won't fix it. This is frustrating.
Vehicle made grinding noise upon start-up over several months. Honda claimed it is not damaging the engine and there is no fix. Engine continued to grind and my car began having oil problems. Honda still said there was no issue and they were not related. Car continued grinding until this week when all lights on the dashboard lit up. I took my Honda and was told the timing chain is stretched and it needs another vtc actuator replacement (this was fixed under warranty three years ago). The car could have stalled while driving. This is a known issue that Honda is refusing to acknowledge or recall in Honda Cr-v's. They charged me $1800 to fix an issue known to them. This could have resulted in bodily injury to myself or others if the car had stalled while driving. Honda should take responsibility for their faulty engines. There are multiple complaints on this same issue.
This vehicle after having 4500 miles, began to smell terribly of gasoline inside and outside of the vehicle. The vehicle sputtered , did not want to run, and stalled a few times before I wound up at the dealership. I also noticed that when the little wrench came on, for a notification of the first oil change, that the vehicle made a loud growling noise. The vehicle is sitting in the dealership right now waiting a hopeful repair. Here I am with no vehicle, and a $400 per month payment. This is absolutely unacceptable in today's world. This problem should have been fixed, before the vehicle was allowed to be put up for sale . A vehicle is deemed not safe, when it's stalls on you in the middle of traffic.

Faulty vtc actuator, grinding noise on starting the car everyday in the mornings. Dealer have a $600. 00 estimate to have it fixed and not covered under standard warranty. Honda is aware of this issue and no recall has been issued.
Engine makes loud grinding noise when starting cold similar to what others have described as the vtc actuator problem. Car has 83,000 miles on it. Fyi. . . . . This is my second Honda Cr-v. . . . . I traded in the last one at 78,000 miles when it was doing the same thing!!!.
When starting the car in the morning there is a grinding noise. It is now getting worse. From the description search on the internet, this seems to be more common in the 2014 Honda Cr-v. The issue seems to be with the vtc actuator. I believe the part Honda has used is defective. This has been an issue in earlier versions of the Cr-v and accord.
For the past couple of months the engine makes a loud grinding noise when I start it. Mostly in colder weather. I've discussed this with another Honda Cr-v owner and the same thing started happening with them.
Loud grinding noise at startup. Appears to be a common issue in this year, make and model that can cause engine failure while driving.
Grinding noise upon cold start. This issue started at least two years ago. Did not happen on every start. Asked dealership what it might be and I was told it was nothing. Over the past year, noise happens religiously every time there is a cold start. Dealership now says it's the vtc actuator and I am now past my warranty. It appears that a TSB was issued March 2016. Why has no recall been made since this is a widespread issue?.
Engine- purchased car in Aug 2013 in winter that year I heard a loud grinding noise at morning starts when it was cold. Took to Honda dealer service who said it was probably vtc actuator. Had to bring it back and leave over nght so they could hear it in am. Of course the night I took it wasnt cold enough next am to make noise. Took it 3 other times since all to Honda dealer plus reported it each time I took in for service. Never able to hear noise because too warm. Still making noise today, 5 years later. Warranty expired. Very aggravating. Electrical- battery has been replaced 3 times in 5 years, this year it was in janurary. Something is draining it when the vehicle is even turned off and not running. Lights have never been left on to run battery down. Each time I have to get a new battery the sales person says the battery is too new to be drained already and there must be something draining it. Honda dealer says they would need to have the vehicle there when the problem happened to find the problem. They said that the first 2 times I took it there the third time I didnt waste my time going there.
Grinding sound from engine during cold start. Grinding sound last a few seconds when engine is cold.
Makes grinding noise at start up. Similar to other complaints with vtc valve issues.
On cold start the engine makes a loud grinding noise. My vehicle only has 28,500 miles on the car.
As the temperatures drop, my car makes a horrible grinding noise as though something is seizing in the engine whenever I start the car when the engine is cold. The noise only lasts a few seconds, after which the car runs perfectly fine. The problem tends to occur whenever I start the car after it has been sitting unused for hours in cold weather. This appears to be a common issue with Hondas and should be addressed by the manufacturer.
Grinding sound for 1-2 seconds after the engine starts especially during cold start. When I googled it, same sound that affecting vtc actuator.
Engine makes a grinding sound upon start up on cold mornings for a few seconds while parked. This has been a problem since I purchased car. Have taken to dealer numerous times, but they cannot tell me what the problem is. Numerous complaints from owners about the vtc actuator, but this was never mentioned to me. Concerned this will lead to problems if not addressed.
On cold start engine makes loud grinding sound. Vehicle was purchased in January 2016 and has continuously done this on cold mornings.
Have 2013 Honda Cr-v and when go to start it after sitting overnight makes loud grinding noise for 1-2 seconds. Dealership says it's the vtc actuator and is a know problem but not recall has been issued. They want 500 bucks to fix the issues since car of course isn't under warranty and won't work with me at all. Very unprofessional in my opinion of Honda with an issues that is know and common.
Upon starting car in the morning, car is stationary, with temperatures below freezing, the engine makes a grinding noise, if only for a few seconds.
Loud grinding sound when starting the car in the garage. This has happened in the past on cold days but temperature today was in the 50s. I am concerned about damage from this as the days here in wisconsin are only going to get colder. I am keeping a running list of occurrences and documenting dates and temperatures.
At the stationary position, heard a loud grinding sound every time I start the car. Dealership stated it is a vtc actuator failure.
2010 Honda crv has excessive oil consumption problem leading to an engine stall on 9/28/17 while driving approx. 30mph on a city street. There was no prior warning of an oil level problem until the oil pressure light came on when the car stalled out. The oil had been changed in the car 2 months prior and was routinely changed approx. Every 4k miles. . The vehicle had also been having a grinding noise when starting up cold each day. This has been determined to be a vtc actuator problem. The excessive oil burning has now also caused an emissions problem (catalytic converter) and the car will not pass state inspection. There are numerous complaints including litigation pertaining to the excessive oil issue and the vtc actuator defect. There needs to be an investigation into whether vehicle crashes/injuries/fatalities involving the affected Honda vehicles are caused by engine stalls or loss or power and furthermore if the excessive oil consumption problem is the cause. If the vtc actuator is causing or contributing to the problem, there needs to be a recall. Also, does excessive oil burning increase the risk of engine fires in these vehicles? is excessive oil burning causing emissions system failures and polluting the environment? a vehicle that burns 4-5 quarts of oil between 5k mile oil changes is not safe to drive for anybody but especially unsafe for the elderly and young drivers. The defect will cause engine performance problems leading to car crashes, engine fires and violates emissions standards.
Car has a loud rattle or grinding sound on a cold startup. Last a couple of seconds then goes away. Has done this for 3 years, since I got it.
Engine makes grinding noise at start in cold or from sitting. Have been told it's vtc valve but has no fix. Car is cpo with 32,000 miles. Still under warranty.
Grinding noise upon cold start. This issue started at least two years ago. Did not happen on every start. Asked dealership what it might be and I was told it was nothing. Why has no recall been made since this is a widespread issue? class action settlement 3/ 2018 did not include the crv's.
Every time I start a car I hear a grinding sound that lasts for 1-2 seconds and then stops. . Read more...
I currently own a 2014 Honda crv and there is a specific part that was replaced 3 times called a vtc actuator and its a faulty design all the 2012 to 2014 Honda crvs have the same issue and I'm afraid it will eventually ruin my engine, everytime on start there is grinding sound and when I first got the vehicle in 2015 in would only do the in the winter then in warmer weather it wouldn't now its constant on every startup.
