The contact owns a 2008 Honda Odyssey. While driving 40 mph the anti-lock brake and the vsa light illuminated on the dashboard. He stated that the light may stay on for 50 to 100 miles and the light would shut off. He stated that when the abs light was on he had regular brakes. The failure had occurred for at least a year. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times for the failure but they could not duplicate the failure. He also stated that the dealer had never written an invoice for the failure. The failure mileage was 12,000 and the current mileage was 18,000.

While driving down the road (route 20, traveling east, down town northborough, MA, speed ~20 mph) as vehicle passed over a railroad expansion type joint, the left front coil spring broke. Approximately . 5 to 1 second after loud metallic noise abs light came on. Pulled car over to side of road and could not find anything obviously wrong, continued home cautiously ~ 1/2 mile. Upon further investigation found a piece of the broken coil spring hanging down from the left front half shaft. Disassembly of the front left wheel allowed for the evaluation of the damage caused by the broken coil spring. It became clear that the broken piece of coil spring had struck the abs wheel sensor line, ripped the left front outboard cv joint boot and wrapped itself around the half shaft. I felt lucky in knowing that the brake line that was ~ 2 inches to the left of the abs sensor appeared undamaged. Had the very sharp broken piece from the damaged spring hit either the brake line or the tire at highway speed it could have caused a catastrophic brake failure or a tire blow out. Had the vehicle continued to have been driven with the sharp broken piece of coil spring wrapped around the half shaft it could have caused additional damage, most likely a cut brake line. In talking with Honda customer service they felt there was / is no issue (even though I raised the issue of safety), yet my own research has shown that the coil spring on the Odyssey has been investigated in the past with no finding and many failures are documented across the internet. Replacement of the coil spring, strut, abs wheel speed sensor, and cv joint boot are required to fix the problem. Since a spring failure from the left side has occurred, the spring along with strut on the right side will be replaced as a pre-caution. I have both pieces of the broken coil spring in my possession, my initial investigation does not point to corrosion as the likely cause of the spring failure.

Problem with abs light illuminated on dash and abs modulator. The abs light had come on. The consumer was told the modulator could be reset but there was no guarantee that the light would not come back on. Within twelve miles after the repair, the light had come back on.

Abs light came on and modulator and accelerator were leaking, balance shaft seal caused oil to poor out, and they replaced that.
I believe that the dealership I bought this vehicle from didn't do a thorough inspection of the vehicle. In August 1998, the abs light came on. I had it checked and the diagnosis was that the anti lock brake accumulator was bad. The total cost for the repair was $435. In February 1999, a front oil seal gasket blew. Repair cost were $320. Now, August 1999, the abs light came on again. The diagnosis is the accumulator needs to be replace again. It has been almost 1 year to the date that the previous one was replaced. I took the vehicle to sunbelt Honda in lake city this time for the problem to be evaluated. Not only do they say the accumulator is bad but that the modulator may be the cause for the accumulator going bad. Estimated cost is $500-$2000. Honda corporation (sean theus) customer service has said that Honda will absorb some of the cost but that I will have to pay probably at least half of the bill. I feel this particular vehicle is a lemon, but unfortunately, I have found no laws to protect used car buyers against lemons. I need help because my husband and I are making a $380 van payment on top of these costly repairs. If you cannot be of help to us, please direct us to someone who might be able to.
