8 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2009 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/10/2013

The struts supporting the rear hatch door are no longer supporting the door and it fell on my head when putting in my golf clubs. I believe it is the same strut problem they had in the recall for similar models, other VIN numbers. I talked to my dealer and Honda corporation but it is a different VIN and not covered by the recall. I think it is the struts on all of the 2009 Honda Odyssey's and not just a select few as in the recall.

9 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2007 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/20/2012

The lift gate gas filled struts on our 2007 Honda Odyssey have failed. The lift gate will not stay open to pack the van for trips and requires some sort of prop to stay open. The gate has fallen twice off the prop and hit me, not seriously, but it hurt. It's heavy. I see that later models have a recall associated with similar problems but the 2007 does not as of yet. (NHTSA campaign #12v062000, action # pe11034).

10 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2008 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/01/2012

About 2 weeks ago. . . October 1, 2012, I took my Honda back in to Honda. My car had been accelerating on its own. I left my Honda there for 3 days, at which point they determined there was nothing wrong with it, and they would like me to bring it back in to drive it "with them. The contact owns a 2005 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the rear hatch was opened using the automatic key fob. The rear hatch then came in contact with a pole located outside of the vehicle and the hatch began to close but it could not be closed because the hatch was knocked out of alignment by the pole. As a result, the rear hatched continued to automatically open and close until the contact slammed it closed. The contact expressed concern because the rear hatch continued to unintentionally open and close independently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the contact was informed that the vehicle was operating to specifications. The vehicle was not repaired. 14 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/23/2012

The power lift gate fell down on me; luckily no one was directly under it when it fell. It happened instantly; when I opened it up, it crashed down the first time. Upon further attempts to open it, it would slowly open and then jerk and then go back down. It will not stay open by itself. The local Honda service center inspected it and said the struts had gone out on it and replaced them both. According to news Feb 21, 2012, Honda Odysseys are being recalled for the same issue in March 2012; my 2006 model has done the same thing the news articles report.

15 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2008 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/05/2011

On approximately November 5, 2011 my husband went out to our 2008 Honda Odyssey to retrieve some items. He opened the rear liftgate as usual and while he was retrieving the bags the rear door gave way falling onto his back. The struts that hold the door up failed and can no longer support the weight of the door. Not only is it difficult to lift the door, but my husband and I have since been using a piece of wood to hold up the door when needed. I understand there is a recall of certain 2008-2009 Honda Odyssey rear liftgate struts for this exact same problem( NHTSA campaign id# 12v062000). However, I was told by the staff and manager at phillipsburg easton Honda that this recall does not apply to my vehicle eventhough it has the same exact problem listed in the recall.

20 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

The power lift gate on 2006 Odyssey failed hitting my husband on the shoulder. We had no prior warning of this happening and it could have easily resulted in a more serious injury had the gate closed on one of my children. Honda currently has a recall on 2005 vehicle for this issue but when I called them they said they would make a note but at this time did not have any information as to a recall of the 2006. My local dealerships acknowledged a problem with the deterioration of the gas struts in the Odyssey. This clearly a dangerous defect and needs to be rectified before someone gets seriously injured.

21 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

Failure of the lift gate gas struts on a 2006 Honda Odyssey touring that causes the gate to close unexpectedly. Consequences were an adult male being hit in the back by the lift gate. In this instance no serious injury had occurred, but if the person in the path of the lift gate were smaller the weight and momentum of the gate could easily cause head and neck injuries. I would assume most owners of this minivan have children and there is no doubt that a child in the path of a failing lift gate would sustain serious injury. The lift gate gas struts need to be replaced. Honda is aware of the issue and has offered a recall for this on similar vehicles, but has not yet offered any correction for the vehicle we own.

22 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/16/2010

2009 Honda Odyssey. Rear hatch door in back will slam shut without any warning or being closed. No wind or external force caused it to slam shut very fast. Thank goodness there was no one under the hatch door when it happened. Also, rear hatch door sometimes will not stay up without being propped up to avoid from closing.

25 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/15/2009

The supports for the rear liftgate/hatchback on my Honda Odyssey minivan failed causing the full weight of the rear gate to strike the head of our 11-year old child. The failure of the rear-gate occurred occasionally at first causing head injuries to happen more frequently to others unexpectant of the sudden failures. Now, it fails everytime the gate or rear hatch back is used.

26 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2009 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/26/2009

Power lift gate failure - without warning the power lift gate failed to operate and the struts do not keep it open. The lift gate falls with such force that it caused a serious injury (needed 8 stitches). Dealer is investigating the cause and a solution.

27 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/28/2009

2005 Honda Odyssey lift gate stays failed causing minor injury.

28 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/12/2009

I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey ex. Summer of 2007 the struts went out the rear liftgate slammed down nearly catching my hand as I was unloading items. The struts were replaced. Last summer of 2008 the struts failed again and I was unable to open the gate and it would slam shut. They replaced the struts. This summer, August 2009 they failed again. Honda is not willing to replace the struts at no cost to me at this point. The hatch slams down and could easily decapitate a person that was leaning into the vehicle. Luckily none of my children or I have not been injured, just annoyed at this point.
