The liftgate does not always stay in the up position. It lifts to the top and then drops quickly with no resistance. It seems worse when the outside temperature is colder (below 40-50 degrees f. There was a recall on the gas struts in about 2012. I called vic bailey Honda in spartanburg, SC. Someone in the service department said their records showed that the recall had been completed on the vehicle.

On December 28th we unloaded the back of our minivan and closed the liftgate and everything was fine. The next morning we came out and there was a 5"x5" section of the paint just peeled off and laying on the ground it peeled all the way down to the base color (perhaps primer layer). Realizing this was clearly a defect we quickly did our research and realized this is a very common issue with Honda vehicles, specifially Odyssey and commonly in the white pearl color. Brought the car to the dealer to have them look at it. They quickly asked if I wanted and estimate. I explainted that I was aware this was a common defect at which point they acknowledged it is an issue with the primer and they would take images and get in touch with Honda corp. Honda corp said my VIN did not qualify for their warranty extension as that only applies to 2012-2014 models. My car was delived in 2014, but was the 2015 model. They knowingly have sold me a defective product and they are refusing to take ownership of this widespread issue. This section is clearly going to spread. The cases that are more advanced than mine are ridiculous.

After leasing our car for less than 1 year - the power liftgate malfunctioned (which coincidentally there had been a recall in the past on our Honda Odyssey 2009 for appears to be the exact same issue. ) it seems to be exactly the same thing happening again with the 2018 model we have now. So that the trunk won't open by itself. So for the past few years we had too manually lift the trunk and it's extremely heavy to lift and slow and can bang you in the head because it does not lift very high. If this wasn't bad enough a month ago the electrical power/fuse to even accomplish what I just explained electrically shorted for no reasonable explanation. So that my husband has to quite literally climb through the two rows of seats take the plastic off permanently on the manual/nonelectric trunk release from the inside of the car in order to get our trunk door to open at all. The outside of the car electrical button has no electricity running in it at all. This is terrible for a family of 5 children. There haven't been any recalls on this and I'm sure it'll be quite expensive to replace. Please look into this issue for us please. Thank you kindly. Please see below the recall in 2009 that should also be for the 2018 model as well. Honda is recalling certain model year 2008-2009 Odyssey vehicles, the gas-filled struts that help to raise and support the liftgate of vehicles equipped with a power liftgate system may be prone to early life failures due to a manufacturing flaw. The flaw can result in a leak of the pressurized gas, leading to reduced strut performance.
2008 Honda Odyssey ex-l without power lift gate. The rear hatch struts part # 74820shja01 failed in a dangerous way. They were working perfect the time before with now signs of any leaking or weakness and the very next time they failed causing the rear door to slam down in an uncontrolled manner. I checked the VIN for the recall NHTSA campaign id number 12v062000 NHTSA action number pe11034 date Feb 16, 2012 structure: body: hatchback/liftgate: hinge and attachments but state my VIN is not part of the recall, but I find it strange that the failure acted in the same manner as the recall. Vehicle was stationary.

We own a 2009 Honda Odyssey that recently experienced failed gas struts in the hatch. The car was parked & I was loading groceries into it when the rear liftgate came crashing down - I was lucky enough to jump out ofthe way in time or could have been seriously hurt. . There is a recall for the 2009 Odyssey for the exact same failure mode, but only for the motorized hatch. (ours is not motorized). I would like you to look into the possibility of having Honda increase the scope of the recall to include non-motorized hatches.
Approximately 3 weeks ago, my wife went out to our driveway to start her day and suddenly the passenger door and liftgate on our low mileage 2007 Honda Odyssey minivan would not open. Neither could be opened via remote or physical level (interior or exterior). At the same time, the right tail light stopped lighting. The dealership cannot explain the coincidence, which suggests some sort of electical issue which broke multiple actuators, but regardless it is a huge safety issue. Right now occupants could very well be trapped in the vehicle in an emergency. The dealer has provided an estimate of $1000 to repair, and I believe they should address the issue at their expense as there are many, many reports of Hondas suffering from these door and liftgate issues. Please help make them accountable before someone is injured or killed. Thanks.

Liftgate struts failed, without warning, liftgate fell on my head as I reached in to grab personal items, causing headache. My 5 year old daughter was standing next to me, if my head would not have stopped the liftgate I cant imagine how seriously she would have been injured. There is a recall for this on the touring model, but not the ex-l however there are numerous complaints about this part failing prematurely, as early as 20,000 miles on ex-l models. Recall should be expanded to include ex-l.
The two struts just suddenly cannot hold the liftgate which it almost hit my wife and kids' head. Should Honda notice these struts failure? known many other people have same problem on 2008 Odyssey ex/exl models.
2007 Honda Odyssey. Consumer experienced a second failure of the lift gate struts that held the rear entry open while the attendant loaded and unloaded a wheelchair.
When I was on vacation with my family, the driver side passenger door would not close. It would close partly, begin beeping and reopen. We had to keep pressing the control to close the door until it finally closed. Two days before that, the liftgate struts failed. That is disturbing when I think about how my daughter was helping me get items out of the back. We could have been seriously injured. Thirdly, the paint is stripping off on parts of the body. Considering the reputation that Honda is supposed to have, it is upsetting to have this many problems with an 8 year old vehicle! now we must decide if it's worth fixing and keeping or trade it in for a Toyota. In looking at the other complaints, it is obvious that there are problems with the vehicle that needs to be addressed but are not being addressed. How seriously does someone have to be hurt before someone pays attention?.

The liftgate struts failed suddenly and no longer support the heavy door. There was no gradual deterioration. Ours is a manual version - not powered and for some reason isn't covered by the recall 12v062000, even though it uses the same part that was determined to be defective in that investagation - NHTSA action number : pe11034. It was determined that it failed at unacceptable rate and the number of complaints from manual liftgates is higher than those of the powered liftgates. This is at least as dangerous as a powered liftgate situation, especially for my wife and 3 young children. The investigation and recall needs to be expanded to cover all models using this part, not just the powered doors.

The rear liftgate door had become abnormally heavy and does not holdup on its own. Referencing NHTSA campaign id number: 12v062000 (structure: body: hatchback/liftgate: support device) I called the dealer. The service manager advised that the vehicle was not included in the recall campaign and offered no assistance. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was not under any recalls and offered no additional assistance. This problem must be something Honda needs to fix on their own.
Gas struts in rear hatch failed. Hatch came down quickly and without warning. Injury was minor abrasion to index finger that did not require medical attention. Believed to be related to Honda recall #s22, NHTSA campaign #12v062000. Inquired about recall campaign to local Honda dealer. Honda dealer responded that the campaign does not cover the model in question. Campaign should be expanded.

The lift gate gas filled struts on our 2007 Honda Odyssey have failed. The lift gate will not stay open to pack the van for trips and requires some sort of prop to stay open. The gate has fallen twice off the prop and hit me, not seriously, but it hurt. It's heavy. I see that later models have a recall associated with similar problems but the 2007 does not as of yet. (NHTSA campaign #12v062000, action # pe11034).
Rear liftgate struts failed causing liftgate to fall suddenly on me beneath the rear door. Honda has already issued a recall on some 2008 models. When I called the dealer and Honda customer support regarding the incident, they refused to cover repair under recall. Informed about safety concern but no acknowledgment by Honda that this is a safety issue with potential for injury. Recall should be expanded to cover more vehicles than acknowledged by Honda. Honda should act responsibly to prevent injury to owners of these vehicles and recall and replace all affected vehicles before more injuries occur. The dealership told me it would cost me $200 to replace the struts. My Odyssey does not have electric component struts for the rear hatch.
Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated the rear liftgate would not remain in a secured upward position whenever accessing and closed abruptly. The approximate failure mileage was 21,000. Js.
Rear liftgate of Odyssey failed, luckily there were no injuries as the trunk slammed shut. Took to dealer today and asked about the recall but apparently only some, not all, have been recalled, so I am paying for this failure to be repaired myself. Frustrating!.

Structure/body:hatchback/liftgate:support device---I went to open the back door on the van to get a stroller out. It was difficult to open and very heavy. When I let go the door shut on me. I had received a recall notice in the mail prior to the incident, informing me that the struts were bad and could give out unexpectedly. (ref #12v062000) when I called the dealership I was told my vehicle was under recall, but the parts were not in. After the parts arrived at the dealership, I was called and an appointment was made for the repair. Upon my arrival to the dealership for the repair, I was told my VIN was not under recall after all. At that point there was no helpful person at the dealership. It has been 7 months of weight lifting getting the stroller, groceries, etc. In and out of the van. Still no help from Honda (the dealership or national line).
The struts on my 2008 Honda Odyssey ex-l failed this morning. It is not covered by the current recall from Feb 16, 2012, since my Odyssey does not have a power liftgate. People still have to use the liftgate (powered or not), and it poses a big risk to the person under the liftgate. While supporting the liftgate with my head, I had to pull out my bicycle from the vehicle with both hands. As I moved, the liftgate would hurt me since it was only being kept open by my body. As soon as I moved out, it closed with a big bang. This is a major risk especially to the demographics of the users of the Odyssey: moms with young children. . Read more...
