A water leak above the tailgate control module flooded it to the point that it operated erratically and would raise and lower the tailgate randomly or not work at all. I plan on replacing the module myself but will retain the old one. Anytime the entry or exit points on a vehicle open randomly cannot be a safe condition. The dealer charges $130 for any inspection or diagnostic so no I am not paying them to tell me something is broken. The vehicle currently is showing a "power tailgate problem" and a yellow box with "tailgate" in it on the dash display and is currently unresponsive to any input that would operate remote, tailgate buttons, and driver button. The power locking system is still operable. The odyessy forums clearly describe multiple occurrences of this failure and the culprit is a water leak in rear window or rear section of roof trim strip on the drivers side. My module did have water in it when I opened the plastic case it is contained in. Cleaning and drying it restored operation for about 3 days. Thanks for your help!.

The non-power tailgate on my 2019 Honda Odyssey ex only opens to, a head bashing, about 5 ft 10 in. Me, my wife, and my 13-year daughter repeatedly hit our heads on the liftgate. The 2019-2021 trims with power liftgate open higher than 6ft 2 inches. Also, prior generations (pre-2019) of Honday Odyssey liftagtes opened higher than 6 ft. With our current 2019 ex trim me, my wife, and our 13-year-old daughter all have to duck every time we load/unload the trunk. The dealer told me it's normal for the ex liftgate to open only 5ft 10in or so. I complained to Honda corporate after I, again, hit my head (with scars and photos to prove it). Honda called me and said that it is normal. I owned several cars before, Honda and other brands, and never ever had an issue hurting my head on the liftgate. I am 6ft 1in. This issue is an innjury hazard. Honda needs to admit to this as either an engineering or design oversight, or a bad decision, with the non-power ex trim liftgate. The power liftgate trims (more expensive) do open higher than 6 ft, so clearly it is not impossible to fix the issue. I also checked the 2021 Odyssey models today at the local Honda dealership - Honda did not address the issue: the ex non-power liftgate still opens at a similar 5'10'' while the more expensive ex-l power liftgate opens beyond 6'3''. Please help me and many other ex trim owners with the same issue. . Read more...

The tailgate suddenly stopped staying up. I have seen a recall on 2008 and 2009 Odysseys for the same issue. We are going to have to replace the struts that hold the gate up.

The tailgate latching mechanism stops working when the weather gets cold and not able to open the tail gate. The vehicle was service before for the same problem but in cold weather it stops working.

Our 2014 diamond white pearl Honda Odyssey has a factory paint defect called delamination. The paint started peeling off in sheets / large sections from the roof in January 2019 and then the tailgate in February 2019. The white paint base coat is cleanly separating from the ed primer. American Honda USA refuses to take ownership of the problem and actually trying to state this is owner wear & tear? they need to pay for this defect 100% and Honda needs to admit this is a wide spread problem affecting all newer white Honda's like 2016 hrv, 2015 pilots, fits & Odysseys, 2014 pilots & Odysseys, 2013, 2012 etc etc. Anything white from Honda and even Acura, made in their USA & mexico factories. Cbs 2 los angeles no has an open and ongoing investigation as well: https://losangeles. Cbslocal. Com/video/program/1200/4059251-2-on-your-side-peeling-car-paint/ all we want is Honda USA to cover this defect 100%, and if they continue to sell these white Honda's to owners not letting them know the paint will only last between 3-5 years they are practicing in consumer fraud. Industry standard is for a cars paint to last a minimum of 10 years under normal use.

For some reason my particular van is not included in at least 2 recalls where other same year Odysseys are included. These all have the same engine, transmission and fuel system. My van was diagnosed by a mechanic as having a fuel pump module leak, which is recalled for some 2008 odussseys, but curiously not for mine. The same situation exists for the tailgate stay gas leakage, again, also recalled on some 2008 Odysseys but not all.

White paint is peeling off of the vehicle in 3 spots. This began about a year ago and continues to get worse. Right and left side of the tailgate, and 1 spot on the roof between the windshield and the moonroof. Many other Honda Odyssey and pilot owners are experiencing this same problem.

While vehicle was stationary, the manual rear tailgate gas-charged lift struts/stays failed without warning, causing the rear tailgate to fall on the occupant with significant weight and velocity, causing minor head injuries. The vehicle had been inspected roughly 2 weeks prior and no signs of imminent failure were detected. No safety mechanism exists to prevent the tailgate from falling in the event of lift support failure.
The rear tailgate will not release in cold weather (typically at freezing or below) restricting all access to the rear of the van.
Paint peeling in various spots on the vehicle. First spot was a small peel on the roof, Honda repaired. Now the entire lower half of the tailgate peeled during a simple car washing. It came of like it was a decal with no more glue! ughh.
Similar to campaign id # 12v062000 (for older 2008-09 Odysseys), the tailgate on my 2010 Odyssey has failed without any warning. Opening it via electrical buttons (in-car dashboard or remote buttons) results in the tailgate raising, bouncing up and down, then closing right back down. Opening it manually produces additional resistance to opening that wasn't there before the failure; then the tailgate refuses to stay up in the open position and slams down with additional force that can hurt an adult, and seriously injure a child. Based on campaign id # 12v062000, suspected failure points are the tailgate gas-filled struts. . Read more...

The car has large chunks of paint peeling from the roof and tailgate.
On two recent occasions, the tailgate has lowered itself without the driver pressing the tailgate button on the dashboard or on the tailgate itself. It lowers without giving the normal audible signal. And in both cases, there was a minor injury occurring as a result of the problem. Once to a child, and the latest to an adult. In the latest incident, the drivers head (ear) was impacted by the downward force of the tailgate, pressing the head against the left rear corner of the vehicle while the driver was leaning into the rear compartment. Very painful to the driver's left ear, but not immediately requiring medical attention. The service department of our local Honda dealership - where the vehicle is normally maintained - states this VIN is not under recall for faulty tailgate struts or related.

2013 Honda Odyssey. Consumer writes in regards to defective tailgate. The consumer stated the hydraulic stray strut was replaced under warranty. The failure recurred.
The tailgate struts that support the tailgate (back) door of the minivan failed (collapsed) when the door was in its open position. This caused the back door to slam shut with great force. The struts are cylinders filled with gas under pressure used to pop the door open and hold it open. The door is very heavy and did not fail in a failsafe manner (lockup for example), instead the system failed to support the door in its open position. There is a recall on this very problem, make, model and year: Honda Odyssey 2009, however, my VIN was not included in the recall. Honda inc confirms that they are receiving reports like this one from other people whose cars were not made part of the recall.
The liftgate/tailgate on the Honda Odyssey 2008 exl does not stay up. It falls down due to the weight of the liftgate and has the potential to injure the person using it. This is a non powered liftgate. Honda did have a recall on the powered liftgates for the 2008 exl, but not for the non powered ones.
Power tailgate opened and came right down hitting my wife. She was not hurt. When we purchased the Honda we were told this would not happen that there was a safety system that would make the tailgate go back up if it came down on a person or object. Which is what it has done in the past. We have an appointment to take the car into the dealer Honda of sumner at 7:30 am on 8/12/2013 to have them look at it. We took it into today and a guy ( not a service guy looked at it and said he didn't know what was causing the problem. ) I did some research and it appears to be a tailgate strut problem which I understand is a recall on 2008-2009 models. Action number ea08-015.

The contact owns a 2007 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the tailgate failed to stay open. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. The VIN was not available. The approximate failed mileage was 87,000.
The contact owns a 2008 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while in park, the tailgate failed and would not remain open. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 58,000.
The rear tailgate strut failed on my Odyssey ex- important to differentiate from the ex-l, which was affected by a recall for the same thing (NHTSA campaign #12v062000). The recall did not apply to the ex nor lx models. Problem is the the ex-l, ex & lx models share the same strut part #74820-shj-a21, price $63. 91/each. The parts information is right off Honda's own website. The recall makes no mention of failures to any motors, generators or power locks. The only reference is to the strut itself. If the strut is the problem, why doesn't the recall apply to all '08 Odysseys if all all Odysseys share the same part? I called Honda for an explanation & the rep said they would only pay for repairs to models covered by the recall. Since my vehicle wasn't, they wouldn't pay &, as it stands now, I'm out $213. 71, which is the cost for both parts & labor. I believe I am entitled to reimbursement of the full cost of replacing the struts & I also believe all '08 Odyssey models should be recalled for this problem as failure of the part poses a serious risk of injury to anyone standing under the door, which happens alot while loading/unloading the vehicle.
2008 Honda Odyssey. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle tailgate struts issues. The consumer stated the tailgate struts broke and lost their gas due to leakage. The consumer stated a recall was issued for vehicles with power tailgates. He believed even the vans without power tailgates, should be recalled.
The contact owns a 2008 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the tailgate fell rapidly and unexpectedly. The vehicle was inspected by the dealer, who stated that the struts had leaked gas, which caused the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage 71,061.
We own the Odyssey ex-l with a manual tailgate. The taligate has stopped opening to its maximum height. The shortened distance is not obvious until you proceed under the door and hit your head on the rear tailgate. I'm probably like most Odyssey owners--more focused on her children in a parking lot than the height of my tailgate--but the headache that followed hitting my head on the tailgate this morning made me file this complaint. The door still opens smoothly but unless you are paying attention and push the tailgate up a few more inches after the liftgate supports have stopped, the door is too low and could result in a serious injury.
The struts failed to hold up the tailgate and fall on my wife head, during the loading of our groceries on our recent grocery's outing. The two gas-powered tailgate struts (support rods) that raise and hold up the power tailgate of the Honda Odyssey van's equipped with them failed to hold up the tailgate. They are now no longer functional.
The contact owns a 2008 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while in park, the tailgate would not remain open. He also stated that the lift gate lock could not be unlocked with the key or manually. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for inspection. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not listed under recall NHTSA campaign number: 12v062000 (structure). The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
The contact owns a 2008 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the vehicles tailgae had become inoperable and fell on the contact's shoulders. The contact did not receive any medical assistance for the injury. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that there were no failures with the tailgate and offered no other assistance. The manufacturer was notified who stated that the vehicle was not under warranty and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 18,000 and the current mileage was 20,000.
My wife had mentioned she had been experiencing some problems with the hatch on her Honda. Yesterday she said it was slow to open; today she said it would not open at all. I went out to look at the hatch and try to determine if she had a blown fuse, etc. I pushed the button on the remote and the tailgate opened, contrary to what she had told me. It seemed to open slower than normal. I went to see if anything was attached to the hatch that would slow down its opening. It was raining, so I stepped under the hatch. Without warning it came down on me. The interior of the hatch hit me on the head, knocked me forward then hit me in the back of my legs, causing pain to both my shins and calves where I was struck by the hatch and rear bumper. I already have some issues with a stained neck due to military related service. When the hatch hit me on the head I felt a sudden jolt of pain in my arm and shoulder, like a huge electric shock. Now my neck is very sore/stiff. I have had many other cars with rear hatches. The hatch struts would slowly lose their effectiveness, and would give you some sort of warning that they were going to be in need of repair. These hatches would become less effective in the winter, during cold weather. This is not the case with our Odyssey. It happened suddenly; one day it was fine, the next day it was smacking me in the head. Something is wrong with the design of these things. I'm going to contact Honda of America and let them know that they have a serious safety flaw in that these things could suddenly fail so rapidly. I'm a strong, healthy man. I work as firefighter in a big city, so this kind of trauma is not a huge deal to me. I shudder to think what would have happened if a smaller person was struck by this hatch.
While opening my tailgate on my Honda Odyssey van yesterday at around 6:00 p. M. It fell down on my head. What would cause that to happen? I did not do anything to try and fix it. The dealership was closed.
The support struts for the tailgate failed. The door came crashing down on mother and daughter. Mother pushed daughter out of way but the door caught the mother on the right arm. Upper arm received a deep bruise 1 inch in diameter. The door worked well prior to this. There had been no warning like slow to lift or hard to lift open (or to close).

The rear tailgate struts on my Honda Odyssey van failed once I opened it. The heavy tailgate began to close on me while I was under it and had I not noticed it coming down it would have crushed me. I'm elderly and struggled with the weight of the tailgate as I caught it. The passenger-side strut completely failed, leaking some kind of fluid out of it and the driver-side strut is also leaking. These leaks and failures were sudden as I had recently washed the van a day before and did not find any leaks when I cleaned the tailgate.
The tailgate struts failed when my wife opened the tailgate causing a bruise on her head. Skin was not broken. The struts failed slightly on the 27th and lowered the tail gate a few inches. A few days later, they failed completely and tail gate is hard to open and must be held open or it falls rapidly. The struts need to be replaced. I will take it to the dealer to see if they will honor recall, even if VIN is not included on recall list or perhaps the part failure may also be covered under extended warranty.
As I was unloading groceries from the rear of my van, the lift gate suddenly and unexpectedly dropped on me. I was not injured but if I had been a small child or a weak elderly person it could have had tragic results. The same problem occured when I tried to open the gate a second time while standing safely away from the vehicle. The problem seems to be with the stay assembly tailgate opener which keeps the gate in the open position. There was no problem earlier in the day when I loaded groceries into the van however. .
The contact owns a 2008 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the tailgate door closed on him unexpectedly. The contact was not injured. The dealer was contacted to schedule an appointment and the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 41,000.
