I saw that Honda has recalled
2008- early 2009 model year Honda Odyssey ex-land touring models power liftgate gas struts
I have a non-power lift gate version of this vehicle and the gas struts have failed. I've bumped my head on the tailgate multiple times.

2008 Honda Odyssey rear tailgate struts failed and the rear door free falls shut. The car is only 28 months old.
I started leasing Honda Odyssey 2004 from Honda dealership in April 2004 for 3 years, has not any problem with vehicle in that period (warranty period). I bought after lease and all problems started. 1): radio stopped working, Honda replaced "free" because I bought additional 2 year warranty with $100 deductible, 2): back side window also stopped on open position, Honda fixed for $100 deductible, (past 4 years both side windows doesn't work), 3): (one of major problems for blue color Odyssey's this year), paint started peeling from hood, roof, under glass of both side sliding doors, around back both side windows and whole paint on tailgate, Honda covered only hood, roof and around back both side windows, when asked to paint rest of places they said don't have instruction about other spots from Honda (its was very funny, like: "doctor know better, are you dead or alive"), now Honda offers me for paint it with discounted price. 4) transmission fails, couldn't get any gear until resetting from hole top of steering will, changing trans oil didn't resolve this problem (this what mechanic told me) in Honda dealership 5) in 2011 on scheduled oil change mechanic told me to change all engine mounts and front shocks for $2500, hydraulic engine mount got leak and broke other mounts, I bought all engine mounts and front shocks for $700 and changed my self. . . . Now srs electronic control unit. . . . I guess its too many defects and problems for this car. . . . Btw I'm a first and only owner of this Odyssey and got only 96k miles on it. . . .

I have a 2007 ex with 13,000 miles and both of the tailgate (hatch) struts just failed suddently on 08/15/2010. There should be some additional safety mechanism on these so that they just don't collapse and cause harm (the hatch almost slam my 7-years old son on the head). Both can not go bad at one time and either one should support some weight. It is quite dangerous. These liftgate struts should be recalled before bad things happen. Honda should stand behind what they put in these cars.

My car is a Honda Odyssey touring 2006. I remotely opened the tailgate and stepped under it to put up the third row seat. The tailgate unexpectedly began to lower and hit me in the head pretty hard. I then tried again thinking it was an error and was almost hit again. The third time I tried to stop the door from going down but could not. Now the tailgate will not remain open and I can no longer safely get access to my children's things in the back of the van. It was scary and unnerving to me when this happened because I could not stop the tailgate from going down. There was no safety for me to stop it.

The tailgate failed to stay open all the sudden, a direct hit on the driver with minor body injury. It had been working before and failed without any sign.
Both rear tailgate struts had leaked fluid, causing automatic tailgate to open but then slam shut rather than stay open. Service advisor explained that the problem only became evident after both of the struts had failed but, until then, one functioning strut may have been concealing the failure of the other. Problem manifested at 16,000 miles, and was less than two weeks out of warranty, but dealership charged me to replace the failed hatch struts.
Tail gate failure Honda Odyssey 2005 lx model. The tail gate struts have failed and will not hold open the tailgate door. It takes two people to access the trunk now. I called Honda to see if they could help with the issue and because it is not under the VIN recall for the touring models that I am out of luck. Seems like the same problem on the same year of van should also be covered. Rather than waiting for serious injury to happen.
Noticed that since Feb. 2010, my tailgate unexpectedly shuts closed, it fails to stay open, and at times, it opens only 3/4 the distance up and only for a short moment. . . Nothing has yet been completed to remedy the problem, I just realized through online search that others have the same concern, and a recent recall on 2005 lift gate strut recall was sent out.
2005 Honda Odyssey tailgate failure - while my wife was unloading some groceries with the tailgate open, she heard this beeping sound (from the tailgate) and the tailgate began closing. She did not suffer any significant injury aside from freaking out while trying to get out of the way. Now, the tailgate does not stay open.
Tailgate lift gate hydraulic failure on the Honda Odyssey - failure could cause significant injuries. Was told by local dealership that it is a "common problem" in both old and new Odysseys. Mine failed at maybe 20k miles (I am guessing) and the car is 1. 5 yrs old. Know of another person who's failed at 20k too.
Failure of tailgate stay assembly.
I opened up the trunk gate of my 2005 Honda Odyssey to remove some items, as I was backing away from the van, the tail gate strut suddenly looses pressure and drops down. Honda Odyssey tailgate strut failure. I went to Honda to purchase replacements parts, and kept the orig ones as proof. Now the replacement parts is starting to have problems, it did not completely failed, but it does not have enough pressure to hold up the trunk gate and keep it open. I did receive a bump on the head, since I was not very close to the car, but the situation could have been much worst.
Closed back tailgate/door/hatch from inside the vehicle using the handle located on the inside if the unit. The handle is located so low on the rear door my hand became lodged between the door & the jam, there is no safety release inside the door to open it from inside trapping my hand. The touring model is the only model with a rear door opener on the remote but the interior handle is still located so low on the rear door the same situation occurs.
Tailgate closed unexpectedly while I was standing underneath while loading groceries. 1. ) there was no warning that this was going to happen. Until this point the tailgate had functioned normally in the manual or automatic open/close mode. 2. ) after the tailgate fell it never worked again until I made repairs to the hold open strut. 3. ) I checked the struts and found that the drivers side strut had failed. The strut had no pressure left inside to push out the rod that holds the tailgate open. The passenger side strut was ok and I did not replace this. I purchased a replacement strut from my Honda dealer. When I called to see if a part was in stock the person in the parts department asked me if the vehicle was a "touring model", which it is.
Sliding door window has shattered and is completely cracked. Dealership has not examined vehicle to determine a reason for shattering. . *note: approximately in June 1999, rear windshield shattered and was replaced. Reason given for that defect was excessive heat. Vehicle was eventually examined by local dealership and was repaired under warranty.
