41 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2007 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/05/2011

Honda Odyssey 2007 liftgate non-powered lift struts failed instantaneously. This caused the heavy liftgate to no longer stay on the open/up position. Honda (under extended warranty plan) replaced both struts. Within several months, struts again failed and were replaced by Honda. On 11/3/2013 this struts again failed instantaneously (used without problems around 2pm), failed at 4:30pm. This is less than two years since last replacement for a major functionally necessary component of the Mini-van. Honda was contacted and claims there are no known defects with the struts and that they are "far" outside the replacement warranty window of 12 months. It would same Honda uses defective or inferior parts for these struts. Honda support rep. Told me that if I felt the struts were not high quality and effective in holding the liftgate up I should look for 3rd party manufactured struts that filled my needs better. Very surprised by this response that Honda would tell me to get "better" parts outside if their own liftgate struts are not up to the job they are designed to do for years without failure.

42 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/29/2011

The struts on the liftgate of my 2006 Honda Odyssey lx completely failed in November 2011 at around 40,000 miles. Thankfully, this happened as I was opening it, so no one was underneath it yet. The liftgate is extremely heavy and could have caused serious injury, especially to a small person. We replaced the struts with new Honda parts purchased from the same Honda dealership where we purchased the vehicle. It is now April 2013, not even a year and half later, and the replacement struts have also failed. I called the dealership, and they have no advice on what to do from here other than replace the struts with the same part that has failed twice now. I've seen numerous reports online about the same issue with the same vehicle. Given the track record of the liftgate struts for this model, I think it's pretty likely this will happen again, and I fear that I or someone in my family may suffer serious injury or worse. Other model years have been recalled because apparently the pressurized gas leaks from the struts. I think the 2006 has the same problem, and a recall is in order. These struts need to be replaced with ones that don't leak. This is a serious safety issue.

Failure Date: 11/24/2011

First occurrence happen on 11/24/2011, when I open the gate to get luggage, the automatic liftgate opened all the way up, bounce couple of times and started to close. If I tried to open the gate manually, it would pull and tried to close. I pulled the fuse to try to reset the liftgate to no avail.

44 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2008 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/05/2011

On approximately November 5, 2011 my husband went out to our 2008 Honda Odyssey to retrieve some items. He opened the rear liftgate as usual and while he was retrieving the bags the rear door gave way falling onto his back. The struts that hold the door up failed and can no longer support the weight of the door. Not only is it difficult to lift the door, but my husband and I have since been using a piece of wood to hold up the door when needed. I understand there is a recall of certain 2008-2009 Honda Odyssey rear liftgate struts for this exact same problem( NHTSA campaign id# 12v062000). However, I was told by the staff and manager at phillipsburg easton Honda that this recall does not apply to my vehicle eventhough it has the same exact problem listed in the recall.

45 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2009 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/12/2011

My wife tried to open the (powered) liftgate via the handle. The liftgate would not open this way. When she tried the remote, it opened it apx 90 percent of the way. When it reached the apx 90 percent mark, it seemed that the motor opening it jammed and the gate came down quite quickly, falling unexpectedly on my wife's back. Failure Date: 01/01/2011

My 2006 Honda Odyssey (with 45000 miles) rear liftgate supporting strut(s) failed and the the gate became so heavy. Luckily the failure happened when the gate was closed. If the failure occurs when the gate is open, someone may be injured. However, I did bump my head when I put a post to hold the gate while removing items from the vehicle. I accidentally hit the post and the gate fell and hit my head. The key point is that Honda should replace the struts with a heavier duty parts so no one will get hurt.

66 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/25/2010

Please review your 10v-055000 concerning 2005 Honda Odyssey touring's rear lift gate support cylinders. My vehicle is a 2006 with the same problem. The problem occurred before the expiration of the 36 month/36000 mile warranty. Unfortunately, my wife did not tell me of the problem until a week after the 36 month warranty expired. Honda shows the part number for this lift cylinder as 74820-shj-a61. This part number was used on 2005-2008 vehicles. The local Honda dealer at first was unwilling to do anything. After I insisted he call Honda, he informed me that there was a recall in progress. However, since my vehicle was not currently a part of the affected vehicles, the best Honda would do was pay for the replacement parts if I paid the dealership for the labor. Sounds to me like Honda knows they have a bigger problem, but are unwilling to expand the recall. Instead, they are trying to fix the larger problem on the cheap. And then, only if they are called to task about it. It is clear to me, that as time goes on, the 2006, 2007, and 2008 vehicles will experience the same problems. Please get this recall expanded to include the 2006-2008 vehicles, as well as the 2005 vehicles. It is the same part number for all vehicles, 2005-2008.

68 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/02/2008

There were no events leading to failure. Failure of the rear door support strut was sudden. One of the strut failed immediately. Upon research on internet, found that strut making sound most likely had a failed seal and inert gas had escaped. Appeared similar to recall issue with Toyota sienna's. Honda mfg had no recall issue with the failure of the strut. Upon contact with local Honda distributor first Honda in simi valley, because car had 37k miles it had gone beyond the 36k warranty for the vehicle. Cost for material and labor to repair the strut was $170k material $110 and labor $60 approx. The actual repair work took 10 - 15 minutes. Van is used to transport small children and the failure of the one, made owner- mom very difficult to put in and remove- strollers used and stored in back of vehicle. If failure had been while putting items in and out of the rear, the heavy weight of the door would have resulted in serious injury.
