Honda Odyssey owners have reported 56 problems related to side/window air bag (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Honda Odyssey based on all problems reported for the Odyssey.
I received a notice from Honda in March that my 2000 Odyssey needed driver side airbag replacement. I was notified that the issue could potentially lead to a fatality. I was also notified that no parts are available. Six months later, we still don't have any information about the progress of the new airbag part, and I'm having trouble believing that Honda is making this a priority.

I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey touring. For the last couple months, my passenger side air bag doesn't work when I start my car (pic's attached). Because of this I started researching the problem. I then found all the major air bag problems. I put in my VIN, but the msg I get is that it doesn't affect my car, because I'm registered in CA. However it does say one of the causes is excessive heat. I live in san bernardino county & the heat for the past mo. Has been 100 degrees or above, & when the car is closed up I'm sure the minimum inside is above 125 degrees & when the problem started. When you are replacing millions of air bags, I believe you should definitely include ones that are experiencing current problems. Thank you.

The driver's side airbag, the driver's side curtain airbag, the passenger's side airbag, and the passenger's side curtain airbag (a total of 4 airbags) of the 2018 Honda Odyssey lx unnecessarily and dangerously deployed in a rear-end collision that did not did not cause side displacement or rollover of the vehicle. The front passenger's side airbag deployed with no passengers present in the vehicle, which could even have been a safety hazard if, for example, there were a child in the front passenger seat. This occurrence contradicts the airbag deployment conditions specified in the owner's guide, which state that that the aforementioned airbags should deploy in the case of side impact or rollover situations. This unnecessary and dangerous airbags deployment: a) increased the risk of a secondary collision by startling and distracting the driver at the exact time it was crucial to focus and safely stop the vehicle, b) increased the accident-induced traumatic stress on the driver from the impact shock of the deployed airbags, and c) increased the cost of vehicle repair by necessitating the replacement of the needlessly deployed airbags, which is about 40% of the estimated total cost of repair. Reported the issue to the american Honda motor company, torrance, CA, however, they refused to investigate it. Please see the attached document for details.
Tl-the contact owns a 1999 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the vehicle sideswipped two vehicles going 25 mph. The driver and passanger side airbags deployed with the driver's airbag rupturing and spraying metal pellets. The contact's son was driving the vehicle and was injured. The leftside of his chest was mangled, cut and bleeding. The driver did not go to the hospital. The contact's son then stopped . The vehicle's passanger side fender needed to be replaced and was repaired by the contact's son. The vehicle was towed home and a police report was filed. The right front passanger tire frame was damaged and repaired by a independent mechanic. The air bags were just pushed back into the dashboard and steering wheel. The dealer and manufacturer had not been contacted yet. The vehicle had a NHTSA recall 20v026000 (air bag) for the driver's side air bag. The failure mileage was 100,000. Tf.

While slowly driving over a set of undulations in a business parking lot, the van came down on one of the undulations and deployed the passenger side air curtains and passenger seat airbags. This is a vmi converted mobility van. Because the van is lower to the ground and heavier, it did damage to the bottom of the van. Because of the low speed of travel, and the nature of the van coming down on the undulations (not side impact) the airbags seemed to have deployed without cause. I am concerned that if we are driving and hit a pothole, the airbags may deploy. My wife is a paraplegic and she would be trapped in the van because the ramp will not deploy.
Driving about 60 miles per hour on the freeway heard a loud "pop" that sounded like a gunshot both passenger and driver side airbags deployed. There, was no impact to vehicle, no road debris, no swerving or rollover. I was driving and the bags spontaneously deployed.

We were driving down a residential street, on easter morning on our way to church, at 20-30 mph when our passenger curtain-side airbag deployed. There was no impact. We did not hit anything and no one hit us. Our family (two adults, 5 y. O, 3 y. O, and 6 week old) were in the car with no injuries. We took our case to the local Honda dealer, where they ran diagnostics. They found no issues and referred our case to american Honda (case #05962968). Their engineers and specialists did not find anything wrong either and will be denying our claim (letter of rejection pending). Our state farm insurance will not be covering the issue either (letter of rejection pending) (case#43-1404-3h2). I believe there to be an issue with the airbags since only one major airbag deployed and not the entire airbag system. No airbags deployed from our dashboard. I feel that Honda should be covering our repairs because no impact occurred and this is a major safety issue. Our insurance company has pictures and all documentation including a crash report on the vehicle. I currently do not have them, but can retrieve them if necessary. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I don't know if this is a takata recall or not. My srs light came on as I entered my neighborhood. I smelled a burnt smell. I parked under the car port and put the car in park. I was about to turn off the engine when the passenger side airbag deployed. It broke the windshield, the glove box and the rear view mirror.
The contact owns a 2012 Honda Odyssey. While driving 37 mph, the passenger side air bag and the driver and passenger side curtain air bags deployed independently. There were no injuries. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 36,000.
Takata recall. As I was reached a stop zone in front of a school pedestrian crossing on 4/11/16, I heard a loud boom like an explosion on my minivan. The sound was extremely loud and made my ears hurt and I was disoriented. I looked around thru the window and rear view mirrors but I didn't see anyone hitting or any type of collision with any object or erwin. I then felt fabric touching my left arm and saw the side airbags had deployed on heir own. Both driver side and passenger side side airbags were out of the seat and depleted . My 2 year old son was in the second row seat behind me and my 5 year old daughter was sitting on the second row seat behind the passenger side. They were scared and I drove the van to my house about 1. 5 blocks away. I have a continuos ringing in my left ear since that day. My primary MD has referred me to audiology specialist. Again, the vehicle was at a stop at the pedestrian walkway in front of silverwing elementary school in arey dr. In san diego CA. I have not moved the car from my home driveway afraid that the front airbags could deploy the same way. I contacted Honda and they want to toe the car to a dealer tomorrow 4/15/16 to place the diagnostic computer and evaluate what the issue was and how to correct it.
The contact owns a 2003 Honda Odyssey. While driving approximately 5 mph, the vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier. The front passenger and driver side air bags deployed. The driver sustained various lacerations on the hands and face. Medical attention was not required. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was indicated that the air bags deployed as intended. The failure mileage was 145,000.
Passenger side airbag sensor came on for no reason. Taken to Honda dealer, and they said the light came back on after testing and it will cost me well over $200. To replace. Isn't this a safety problem, and under a warranty? I need to know for sure that this dealer is trustworthy!I was in my driveway when I noticed the light on and it would not go off.
Our son was driving the car when the side airbag deployed. He was not in a car accident nor did he hit anything. There is absolutely no damage to the outside of our 2014 Honda minivan. Thankfully, our son kept calm, pulled the car over and called us. Now Honda says it's an insurance problem and will not pay to freelance the airbag and our insurance company says it's a mechanical problem and Honda should pay.

We turned on the ignition to warm the engine a bit at about 9:50 on the morning of Sunday, August 6, 2015. After a couple of minutes, the passenger-side airbag completely exploded. The car was not in motion, it was parked, so there was no reason for the airbag to deploy. We suppose that it must be defective. The sheer force of the airbag deployment resulted in a large, circular crack on the windshield, with smaller hairline fractures. Fragments of black plastic were propelled throughout the interior of the vehicle. A strong smell of burning plastic ensued and filled the interior of the car. We will not drive the vehicle until it has been properly inspected, as we fear that the driver's side airbag might also be defective. Unfortunately, the Honda dealership our insurance company directed us to will not be open until Tuesday, September 8 due to the labor day holiday. This was a very frightening situation. Thankfully, we were not driving at the time of the incident, and so nobody suffered personal injury - but this airbag malfunction might well have caused wounds from the flying materials and shards of plastic, an automobile accident - perhaps with multiple people involved - or severe injury, possibly even death. Though we feel grateful to have avoided the worst, we are still without a vehicle due to a mechanical defect not caused by us.
The contact owns a 2008 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that another driver failed to yield and crashed into the front passenger side of the contact's vehicle. As a result, the vehicle spun several times and the front driver side air bag delayed to deploy. The driver suffered injuries to the neck, back, arms, and legs that required medical attention. The vehicle was towed to a collision center. It was unknown if a police report was filed. The approximate failure mileage was 38,000.

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the srs warning lamp remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where it was diagnosed that the driver side air bag needed to be replaced. The air bag was replaced, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and they indicated that the side air bags needed to be replaced. The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 15v045000 (air bags), 14v700000 (air bags), 13v412000 (air bags), and 12v573000 (electrical system), but the contact never received any recall notices. The dealer did not indicate that the VIN was included in the recalls. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.
My wife two children and 4 guests were moving from a stop through an intersection when another driver disregarded a red light and hit our car toward the rear of the sliding door and front of rear wheel. The other car's speed was unknown but they did not appear to stop prior to impact. All driver side airbags along the side of the car deployed. My wife and one daughter sustained injuries which required hospital examination. All passengers had seat belt burns. My wife was struck with something on the top of her head presumably from debris from the airbags or trim when the airbags deployed. This left a small round hole on the top of her head. She had blood loss which was treated by witnessing nurses and dispatched emt. She was treated and released from the local hospital and has been recuperating at home. We are evaluating further treatment options for other musculoskeletal injuries. Most seat belt burns were minor although the guest passenger in the 2nd row middle seat (removable seat) had more significant burns due to angle of seat belt.
The contact owns a 2003 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to a dealer, who removed the passenger side airbag from the vehicle and confirmed it was a takata air bag. The manufacturer was notified of the safety concern and advised the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v700000 (air bags). The contact had not experienced a failure.
As the driver and only passenger of the above referenced vehicle en-route to pick-up my wife from work on Thursday, 19 February 2015 at approximately 1630 hours, I was involved in a three vehicle collision while travelling approximately 33 mph westbound on dale boulevard approaching forrestdale avenue in woodbridge, virginia. At the time of the incident, I was wearing my seat belt. The driver side airbag in my 2007 Honda Odyssey deployed. Initial assumption was that as the result of the airbag deployment, my head was forcefully pushed towards the driver side window. And that the impact shattered the glass causing multiple lacerations on the left side of my face, multiple fractures around the eye socket and hyphema in my left eye (photos available for your perusal). To this date, I can't make sense of this assumption. I was immediately transported by emt ambulance to sentara hospital emergency room. X-rays on my chest showed no broken bones. Cat scans to my head confirmed multiple fractures on the eye socket and cheek bones. Surgery was performed between 12 midnight – 3:00 am to suture the lacerations and ensure that my left eye was clear of broken glass. I was out of work from Friday, 20 February 2015 thru Monday, 02 March 2015 by order of dr. Babur lateef, opthalmologist, advanced opthalmology inc. – the specialist who performed the surgery. Dr. Lateef continues to see me to monitor the pressure in my eye, monitor the possibility of getting cataract and vision correction. The vehicle has been repaired and is now in good operating condition (photos of the damage prior to repair available for your perusal). However, with the advent of future recalls due to airbag incidents in the news I decided to share this experience in hopes that I can assist if not help prevent these types of injury/ies.
The contact owns a 2003 Honda Odyssey. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign numbers: 15v045000 (air bags), 14v349000 (air bags), and 13v412000 (air bags). The contact stated that the parts were not available. The dealer did not give a specific date for when the parts would become available. The dealer replaced the drivers side air bag and informed that the passenger side air bag was not available. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.
Honda will not warranty failed front passenger side airbags. Due to 36,000/ three year warrantee expiration. A federal mandate recall on front airbags was already executed on this vehicle. Why has Honda not been made to warrantee all airbags systems associated with the front passenger and driver seats. Does it take serious injury or death to make the NHTSA regulate manufactures to stand behind the safety equipment in their vehicles for the life of the vehicle. I hope that my complaint along with other vehicle owner complaints about this safety issue will be addressed ASAP.

My husband and son were coming home from a business trip when the side airbags deployed for no reason, hitting my husband and son, injury them.
Honda currently has a recall on 2002-2004 Odyssey driver-side air bag for vehicles purchased or registered in "high relative humidity" states (NHTSA recall 14v-351). My '03 Odyssey is purchased and registered in illinois and not included. However, the vehicle is currently driven by my daughter who is attending college in state of alabama, one of the "high relative humidity" states included in the recall, for quite some time now. I called the american Honda to discuss about the situation and they did not want to include my vehicle even though it's operated in those affected states. I'm writing to you to express my concerns about the ways this recall is handled. This recall is climate-related safety issue. Any owner who can show proof of operations in those affected region should be allowed and be included in the recall, like my case presented. I'd appreciate your investigation into this matter and make Honda to expand the recall to include vehicles that's "operated" in those states, not just "purchased" or "registered". Sincerely.
The dealer replaced the driver side air bag under the recall. They claimed that there was no need to replace the passenger side air bag. I now have two issues. Since the manufacturer takata is known to have lied about defects, can I be certain that the replacement that was installed is safe? since there is a recall, 13v-132, now on record, was I lied to about the need to replace the passenger side air bag? this recall; speaks of passenger air bag problems. What corrective action is planned to assure that the replacement air bags are safe and when will they be available?.
Takata recall. The contact owns a 2004 Honda Odyssey. While driving 35 mph, the vehicle crashed into the curb. The front driver side air bag deployed. The contact was not injured and a police report was not filed. The contact was able to drive the vehicle away from the crash. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v045000 (air bags). The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was unknown. Parts distribution disconnect.
The contact owns a 1996 Honda Odyssey. While the vehicle was parked and the engine was running, the driver side air bag deployed independently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,064.

On July 24th , 2014 my wife was driving (with one of our young sons) her 2003 Honda Odyssey about 30-35 mph on a neighborhood street. Without any collision or contact with any other object both front airbags and the driver side airbag spontaneously deployed. She was able to pull off to the right shoulder of the road and called me for assistance. Not long afterwards a town of mount pleasant police officer stopped to render assistance. We explained what happened and he confirmed there was no collision and advised me to take photos of the vehicle (which I did). He stated he couldn¿t write a police report since there was no collision or accident. We had the Odyssey towed to a body shop. My wife suffered a large contusion, burn and hematoma of the left arm which has been very painful requiring her to visit her physician. We contacted the local Honda dealership (rick hendricks Honda) who told my wife that what happened with the airbags was impossible without a collision and stated there was no recall regarding airbags for this car. We contacted the national Honda customer service center who assigned us a case manager. We found out on our own there is a recall for the airbag sensor because of this very issue (spontanious airbag deployment). We were never contacted by Honda about the recall. A month latter, Honda still has our car and has not fixed the problem.
