Honda Pilot owners have reported 16 problems related to transmission shudder (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Honda Pilot based on all problems reported for the Pilot.
Transmission grinding gears sound at about 45-52mph when easing off the gas and a shift occurs. Car tends to lurch when this happens. Happens just about anywhere you can cruise around 45-50mph. Dealer attempted fix with Honda USA, but they only reversed a transmission bracket and replaced transmission fluid. Now it is muffled, but exactly the same otherwise. There is also a notable metallic thunk/slam sound around 20-30mph when easing off the gas and a shift occurs (very harsh and abnormal sound for a car, despite dealer stating this is normal for this vehicle) . Happens anytime you cruise at 20-30. I live right near a stop sign so it happens every time I go home. . Read more...

Takata recall - front driver and passenger and front dash airbags, the sendor does not work. They will not deploy if we were to be in an accident. Also, I have been experiencing transmission shudder in my 2011 Pilot exl. When on light throttle between 25-40 mph, then it disappears. This is while driving on the highway and city streets.

Ok the vehicle stalls on hills, becoming nearly impossible to proceed, and simultaneously emits a grinding-scraping sound seeming to come from the front-end portion of the undercarriage. So, far it has always managed to continue running/moving forward during and after. It just feels like the automatic transmission is badly, and near the end of slipping/failing. I looked up it's value on a website, and a warning box popped up notifying me that my Pilot's year make & model has 6 separate manufacturer's recalls. Upon looking further, I see that-indeed-one recall is for the automatic transmissions! then, when I did another search, specific to my VIN #, I saw that my particular Pilot does not have any recall on it. Yet, now, the transmission is failing, and I only just purchased my car at the end of January, 2019. . . . I want to at least make my best effort to complete the process of attempting to get a transmission recall on my car-since I now that other 2004 Honda Pilots have gotten one. I am filing my complaint today based upon that knowledge, despite the high milage accumulated on my specific Pilot. There've been about 10 separate occurances of the stalling-grinding transmission "death throes" since I acquired it, all took place at low speeds on urban streets, and half *5 or 6 times) happened while driving up a large hill, the rest on flat city streets. I hope this is sufficient info for this complaint to be processed. Thanks.

At approximately 146,000 miles light in the d drive gear on the dash board began flashing. Took it in for repairs and was told the transmission was shuddering 35 mph - 40 mph when it was test driven. Looked into the issue and was told the the transmission would need to be replaced (faulty), immediately.
Transmission shudders at 40 mph. Dealer is aware, changed computer settings and transmission at my expense. Problem still exist and dealer is aware of this issue with these vehicles and has no solution to remedy the problem. Bought the vehicle with 71k mile on 12/2/17.
I got problem with transmission with grinding gear when I use eco on and now my transmission make whistle noise when change shift from 2 to 3 and 3 to 4. I would like american Honda responsibility with transmission new Honda Pilot 2016 and they should be recall for transmission. Now I feel not comfortable with this noise.

While driving my 2008 Honda Pilot at approximately 35 miles an hour there was a terrible shudder in the transmission and it lasted for about 3 seconds . At that time I lost power and luckily I wasn't crossing over an intersection , or else I might not be here to document this. This occurrence has happened probably 6 times a week. There are other people that are having the same issues as I am . Why is Honda of America not doing anything about this issue, even though it is out of warranty.

I own a 2005 Honda Pilot. I have had an issue that is increasingly getting worse- when driving 30-45 mph, the engine/transmission starts to shudder. If I let off the accelerator it will let up. It is scary, the whole vehicle jolts repeatedly. If the engine is jolting so dramatically, I can only imagine that the stabilization of the engine is being put in jeopardy. In doing some research, I have found that I am one of hundreds, if not thousands of people with the same problem and complaint. I feel that this is the manufacturer's defect that should be addressed and resolved by Honda promptly. The concern is not only for the vehicle itself, but mostly for the lives that these vehicles carry. Please give attention to our complaint before a serious accident occurs. We have paid for a safe and reliable car, so please give us one. Thank you for your attention and consideration, please help NHTSA!.

Purchased 2012 Honda Pilot July 2012. Went on a trip a few days later and noticed a vibration in the steering wheel, seat and floor. As time went on I figured out it was happening when the eco mode was engaged. At approx. 45 mph the transmission shudders badly like it doesn't know what gear to shift into. Even at lower (30-40 mph) and higher (50-70) speeds I can feel when the eco mode kicks in and the vibration / shuddering starts. I've been to the dealership, they said they could feel the vibration but nothing was wrong. Even brought in a regional Honda representative who told me that's the way the vehicle works and there is nothing they would do about it. What I can see happening is my warranty runs out and the system fails and I'm stuck with a big repair bill.

2005 Honda Pilot - transmission vibration Honda Pilot has only 55,000 miles and the transmission vibrates at about 25 to 35 mph with a kind of puffing sound. At 50 to 60 mph it is a much harder vibration.
2003 Honda Pilot (automatic transmission) has a shudder in the transmission between 29-49 mph. The shudder was first noticed when the odometer had about 130k miles. We were told to change the transmission fluid, but we had recently had the transmission serviced at Honda dealer. If you ease off the gas the shudder will stop. It only lasts for a few seconds, but it is very noticable shake. We have been told that the transmission needs to be replaced. A well maintained Honda vehicle should not be needing its transmission replaced at 130k miles.

The transmission shudder before the gear shifts under a moderate acceleration. Sometimes this occurs in the 30 mph range and sometimes it occurs during higher speed shifts such as 60 mph. If I keep my foot on the accelerator the shuddering will continue until I either press the accelerator harder or I let off entirely. It also occurs if I have the cruise control on which really worries me.
Vehicle shudders when transmission is shifting at slow speed.
Vibration on transmission while driving at 35-40 mph.
Transmission shudders intermittantly from 20-35 mph. Diagnosed as transmissioni faliure and it needed to be replaced. Owner responsible for 50% of $4000. 00 bill.
2005 Pilot Honda transmission shudders between 30-40 mph. Research on the web confirms that many people are having this problem - faulty tourque converters. The problem began at 50k miles and now has 142k. Just spent $750 to replace the pressure switches, will not fix the problem.
