Air Bag Not Deploy Problems of Hyundai Elantra - part 1

My 2010 Elantra has a faulty airbag module. My airbags have never been deployed and I only have around 47,000 in mileage. I took my car to the Hyundai dealership and they told me I have a code b1620. They said it would cost about $1100 to fix, which seems like an outrageous cost to me for a safety issue with the car. My car is no longer under warranty, but I believe an issue like this should be replaced free of charge.

On Monday when I started my car I realized my airbag light on my dashboard was on alerting me that my airbags are deactivated and won't deploy. My car has never been in an accident and the airbags have never deployed. It is unsettling that I have to drive around without airbags because I can not afford to pay over 100$ to fix the problem and there is no recall even though my car is not the first Hyundai to have this problem. This is a safety issue.

I purchased my Hyundai Elantra in 2018 from a dealer in gilbert. The vehicle was pre-owned but records do not indicate any accidents. Recently I have started to have an issue with the airbag light being illuminated. It started out as an intermittent issue but now the airbag light is always on. I learned the illuminated airbag light means my airbags will not deploy in a crash. I've never had an issue with airbags in any vehicle I've owned. Some having over 300,000 miles. Hyundai has numerous complaints regarding the airbag system failing. This is a safety issue and it needs to be addressed by Hyundai America. I've tried contacting them for support thru email but have not received any response.

The airbag light on the dashboard of my car goes on and off as I'm driving or when the car is not in motion. Apparently this is due to the clock spring needing to be replaced. Several Hyundais have had this problem so Hyundai extended its warranty for certain models. The 2013 Elantra sedan is covered under this warranty, however, they failed to include the gt model. The gt model has the exact same part with the exact same issues, therefore it should be included under the warranty. This is a terrible safety issue since my airbags will not deploy if I get into a collision.

The vehicle was being adjusted while parking along side a curb on a hill. The driver pulled forward, then attempted to stop in order to put the car in reverse to get closer to the curb, but the brake pedal would not depress. The car began to roll down the hill and hit the back of a parked SUV and ended up wedged under the back of the SUV. The entire front end of the vehicle was smashed, but the airbag never deployed.

I was in an accident today. I was hit by a transport truck on the highway doing at least 60 miles per hour. I was hit 3 times, twice on the drivers side (door and back tire area) then car was spun around and hit head on. The car had to be dragged if the highway, everything under the hood was on the road and windshield cracked. The hood was lifted right up at windshield. I am more than concerned the the airbags did not deploy. Why did our airbags not deploy??? after spinning across highway and coming to a stop facing on coming traffic. We were appalled and very scared. Why didn't that safety feature help keep us safe?.

Tl the contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving at 55 mph, she depressed the brake pedal however, the brakes failed to engage with an abnormal noise being heard. The contact stated that she pumped the brake pedal several times however, the vehicle travelled into a ditch, hit a fence and crashed into a metal post. The contact stated that the air bags failed to deploy as the front of the vehicle was damaged. The contact stated that no injuries were sustained and a police report was filed. The contact also stated while driving over a speed bumper an abnormal noise was heard when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact mentioned that the vehicle was previously serviced under three recalls. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The dealer and manufacturer had not been contacted. The failure mileage was 89,000.

My vehicle was involve in a rear end collision, where I was pushed into the car in front of me , I have substantial damage to both the front and rear of my car. I was stopped at a red light. My car crunched like a tin can, and is a total loss. I hit my head, my wrist, and my back is hurt. My air bags never deployed, not one of them. I cant send pictures now they are on my phone.

A car darted into my lane at 90 degrees. My rental car right corner ended up against the other car's left fender. The driver airbag did not deploy but did start to inflate. A lot of dark gray smoke issued from the steering column for a long time after the bag started to deploy. The bag cover appeared to extend about 6" from the steering wheel and the sides looked pleated, like an accordion bellows. Also something happened under the dash around the pedals. I saw a rectangular light colored area 4-9' tall and 10-20" wide as if a panel had blown off a lower airbag but no inflation occurred there at all. Jan. 22, 2020 on bon air rd, kentfield. Not sure if I was able to brake. Passenger side airbag did not deploy even though there was a passenger in the front seat. Rental company asked that the car be towed to a body shop.

On engine start up, the air bag warning light was activated indicating failure with either the airbag or supplement restraint system. Dealer diagnostics indicated the "clockspring" part had failed. This part has failed often enough that Hyundai has extended warranty on "some models of 2011-2014" Elantra, but not the model of my car even though it is the same part that is on all 2011-2014 Elantra models. Should it fail while the vehicle is moving, then the driver's airbag may not deploy during an accident or the supplement restraint system may not work. The "clockspring" part connects to the speed control system.

On Nov 8th 2019 I was t-boned on my front driver side, by a driver that ran their red traffic light. My light was green and I was in motion through the intersection. My airbags did not deploy during the time of impact. I had to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance because of injuries. As I read complaints though, I see people airbags are deploying without impact.

I stopped at a light and went to move up a few feet. I touched the gas petal and the car flew into the truck in front of me. Airbag did not deploy with this front end collision. I was on a 4 lane divided highway in 5 o'clock traffic. No rain. I am unsure if it was the gas petal or something to do with the gas line itself.

I was rear ended at a high speed and pushed into the car in front of me. The air bag did not deploy, causing me to hit the steering wheel and break my nose.

Tl-the contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving another vehicle ran the contact off the road and the vehicle ran into a concrete barrier and completely flipped over. The passenger door was smashed in and had to be forced open. The frontal and side air bags did not deploy and the collision was a frontal collision. The contact had a mild concussion and some bruising in her face and upper body and was transported by ambulance to the emergency room. A passenger was uninjured. The front windshield was completely smashed in toward the driver and passenger. A police report was filed. The insurance company was contacted and the manufacturer was contacted. There were no recalls but the air bag indicator light was illuminating and was fixed for an air bag recall back on January 9, 2018 before the accident. The dealer (carmax) was also notified. The vehicle was totaled and towed to a scrap yard by the police. The failure mileage was 96,119. Tf.

I had before a car hyunday Elantra 2013, and that car has recall because have some problems with the breaks, and after that carr I buyed a hyunday Elantra 2017, its was the same think with the breaks when the road was wet the breaks do not work and they make a noise, I had accident when was raining my car hit with the concrete fence, the crash was so bad but itns very rare , the car is total lost and the airbags never was deployed please can you investigate that issue , because I think the airbag never works. I dont know what kinda or make air bags are. . I am ok but that why a lot o people die. My car was in motion in a highway.

The clock spring contact assembly for the driver's air bag supplemental restraint system (srs) has become damaged through usage over time. The driver's air bag electrical circuit experiences a high resistance condition, causing the driver's air bag to not deploy. The clock spring develops high resistance, in the event of a crash, the drivers air bag will not deploy and will not be able to properly protect the driver, increasing the risk of injuries. Hyundai has issued a recall/TSB for the 2013 Hyundai Elantra sedan, but not the hatchback which utilizes the exact same part. The repair cost is almost $500 at the dealer and because the repair involves removing the airbag and removing the steering wheel it poses a safety risk for shade tree mechanics. The attached TSB should also apply to the Elantra hatchback as well,.

Tl-the contact owns a 2013 Hyundai elentra. While driving at 3 mph, the contact's vehicle accelerated. The contact was coming out of their church, they got in the vehicle and attempted to drive out of the parking lot. Then, the vehicle accelerated undauntedly. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 70,000. The crash was not in relation to any open recall. Jw.

Airbag srs light appeared on dash panel without reason when the vehicle was started in a parked position and has stayed illuminated since first appearing. The light has been present for several months now. Recent diagnostics reported airbag fault (code b134600 driver airbag resistance too high stage #1). Service facility deemed fault is secondary to defective clock spring. The defect causes the airbag system to fail and airbags will not deploy in the event of an accident because of this fault.

Tl- the contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that the engine light and air bag light flashed as the brakes had been applied however, the wheels spun unexpectedly and the engine power was reduced resulting into a crash into another vehicle. The air bags had not deployed. The driver sustained no injuries for medical treatment. A police report was filed. The manufacturer had not sent notification that the vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v871000 (electronic stability control) as of December 21st, 2015 so the owner was not aware. The vehicle was unable to be driven above mid 20 to 5 mph with a drastic reduction in engine power. The vehicle was towed from the location of the failure and parked because of the failure. A dealer was not contacted yet. The vehicle was rendered unable to be driven due to the failure experienced related to the recall campaign. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was not available. Dyd.

Airbags failed to deploy during front end crash at 35-40 mph.

The car was hit by another car going and the airbags failed to deploy resulting in injuries. My car was turning left at about 15 mph and the other driver blew through a red light at 60 mph. Photos available from esurance.

My airbag light came on and I called the dealership. They said that this has been happening a lot with Hyundai models and said it was likely due to a "clock spring" and that it would cost me $100 just to evaluate, and then possibly another $350 to fix. The guy I talked to said that my airbag would not deploy until it was fixed. This seems like a serious safety issue that appears to be fairly common.

I rear-ended someone at around 30-35 mph. The vehicle I hit was stationary. The air bag did not deploy but the air bag warning light was left on. No one was injured.

Yesterday, February 8th 2019, at approximately 5:30 am, my girlfriend had a high speed impact (speed limit in this area of alaska is 65mph) with a moose. It was a frontal impact on the bumper/hood/windshield/roof, occuring on the front drivers side. The airbags failed to deploy upon this initial impact. Additionally, as the car left the road, there was a second frontal impact into a hardened, plowed snowbank, in which the airbags also failed to deploy. This year and model is believed to be equipped with drivers, passengers, and side curtain airbags, which all failed to deploy. She is the original owner of the vehicle, and has no other accidents or repairs previously performed on the vehicle. We do not know as of yet if a state trooper report was filled, we will be checking Monday. However, we have photos that will be attached that clearly show the,airbag failure.

The dashboard srs airbag warning light went on yesterday and remained on as long as my vehicle was in motion. After turning off the engine, the warning light did not turn on again. The dealer's service technician thinks it is probably the clock spring because this is a common issue. He said to bring it in right away because the airbag will not deploy if the warning light is on. He looked up my VIN and said my vehicle does not qualify for the 15 year, unlimited mileage extended warranty for the clock spring which Hyundai issued for some vehicles. He quoted $140 just to diagnose the problem.

Air bags did not deploy after being hit by commercial box truck going over 50 mph.

Tl the contact owned a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. While driving approximately 55 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and traveled to the floorboard. As a result, the contact crashed into another vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. The contact sustained head and neck injuries and the front passenger sustained head, neck and left shoulder injuries that required medical attention. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to a tow lot. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The cause of the failures was not determined. The approximate failure mileage was 101,569.

Srs light illuminated on the dash, this means that the airbag control unit sees an issue in the system and disabled the system. This means that the airbags will not deploy in the event of an accident.

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Hyundai Elantra. While driving approximately 40 mph, the power steering assist suddenly malfunctioned and the driver was unable to turn the steering wheel. As a result, the contact's vehicle rear ended a second vehicle before crashing into a utility pole. The air bags did not deploy. The driver sustained chest and neck injuries and the front passenger sustained injuries to the right hand and head. Medical attention was received. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the contact's home. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The local dealer was not notified. The failure mileage was 180,000.

Air bag light went on and stayed lit after starting car, begining in October 2018. Problem seemed intermittent; stayed off after start up when there was weight in passenger seat. Took to local mechanic and a diagnosis was ran. Codes showed either the battery or the passenger air bag sensor. Had the 3 1/2 year old battery replaced to rule that out. No air bag light issue for about ten days, but problem began again. A few more weeks pass and the air bag light is on at all times. I understand that the air bags will not deploy when that light is on. I was told by hyundi that air bag problems would be paid by them, but not for related sensor issues. Seems the sensor is equally as dangerous. No air bags, are no air bags. I bought the car (used) because of its high safety ratings for my two teens to drive. I think any item effecting the air bags should be recalled ASAP. Thank you for your research into this issue.

2016 Hyundai Elantra. Consumer states that air bag did not deploy during accident. The consumer stated the airbag may not operated properly.

Airbag light comes on on a lot of this model vehicles. Dealers want to charge a lot of money to check and fix. I believe this should be a safety recall. This light comes on unexpected driving or just stationary. And the possibility of the airbags not deploying is an issue.
