7 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2009 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/11/2014

I drove my 2009 Hyundai Elantra GLS (5 speed manual transmission) into my friend's driveway, came to a complete stop, after being stopped for apprixmatley 30 seconds I pulled the car out of gear, pulled up the hand brake, and turned off the car with the key. As I turned off the car/pulled out the key, the passanger and driver side airbags deployed while my passenger and I were sitting in the front seats. No severe injuries were sustained by my passenger or me. However, days later the loud explosion of the air bag deployment has left a ringing in our ears. It is important to understand that there was no front collision or abrupt stop that should have caused a deployment. The vehicle was at a stable zero speed. Also, I am the origional owner of the vehicle and the vehicle has never been involved in an accident or had the air bags deploy previously. The dealership has reported to me that the vehicle computer codes identified that the vehicle had a front collision, as well as a passenger air bag failure. The service rep agreed with me that there was clearly no impact and agreed with me that the front collision was some sort of false signal. I have filed a report with Hyundai and it is under investigation, but I want to make sure that this is publically recorded due to the danger of the incident.

16 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2004 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/15/2010

My daughter was on the freeway in her 2004 Hyundai Elantra. Her car pulled to the left as she overcorrected, the cart went across the freeway, spun out, up the embankment, landed on the (driver's) side and slid about 50-100 feet before it landed back upright. None of the air bags deployed. The side air bags should of deployed from the impact of the car landing on the side. Her car has been declared a "total loss". After searching the internet, I found that there were recalls for the 2004 Elantra "defective air bags". We were never notified of this recall. My daughter sustained head, neck, and dual shoulder injuries. Thank god she is alive but what about those that have not survived?.

17 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2009 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/08/2010

I was driving a new Hyundai Elantra and the front end of the vehicle started to veer back and forth. I was waiting for the abs to do what it was designed to do , it then pulled sharply to the right over an embankment and rolled over twice. My head hit the roof twice my neck and back were twisted, my left arm and shoulder were twisted and knees hit the dash I believe. When the car came to a stop there was glass everywhere including all over me. This car was equipped with front and side airbags and side air bag curtains. None of these safety devices were activated. My granddaughter and great grandson would have been in this car twenty minutes later, my granddaughter would not have survived this accident. The passenger side window was completely gone, shattered inside the car. I have asked Hyundai of America to retrieve this vehicle to find out why none of these devices activated. This car was a total loss. I had just purchased it on October 27, 2009. Two weeks before this accident I was attempting to enter traffic, I was completely stopped, my foot on the brake. The car started to slowly move into the oncoming traffic no matter how hard I pressed on the brake. The road I was on was flat so it was not sliding. It should have been at a complete standstill. This car has very dangerous defects. It must be recalled and analyzed, or many people will be seriously injured or killed by these cars. Thank you.

21 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/18/2009

There was an airbag recall on my 2001 Hyundai Elantra. I got the recalled repaired by arrow Hyundai in milwaukee, WI. On January 5th, 2009. At the end of September, 2009 both of the side passenger airbags deployed within a week of each other. The first side air bag deployed while I was driving roughly 25mph. (week of September 18th. ) the second side airbag deployed overnight while no one was even in the car. (the next week in September, deployed less than a week after the first) I had tried to schedule two different appointments with Hyundai to have my airbags and seats fixed but had to reschedule because they could not tell me how long they would have my car. Before I could go to the next appointment I made with arrow Hyundai, my front passenger airbag also deployed. (about a week and a half after my second side airbag deployed). The front passenger airbag (the one that deploys from the dashboard) deployed while I was about to pull out from being parked. I was going roughly 3mph if that. This airbag shattered my windshield, making the car impossible to drive. I contacted Hyundai USA the day after my front passenger airbag deployed and they began an "investigation". It has now been over three months since the third airbag deployed and I haven't heard anything about having my car repaired. I have called Hyundai USA at least every other week since this occurred and still have not received a real answer.

25 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2001 Hyundai Elantra

26 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2008 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 10/31/2008

There was no particular incident related to a crash. Twice since 10/08 the dashboard airbag light has gone on for no reason and would not go off. The Hyundai dealer said the first time that the wiring was loose from the time of installation most likely, and they tightened the wires. Second incident was 2 weeks ago. This time they tell us we have a faulty harness and it needs to be replaced. We are still waiting for the part which is supposedly on manufacturer backorder. They tell us the issue is so uncommon that they have not seen it before. Just doing a search online I see the recent recall for similar airbag issues on the 01-02 Elantras, so this makes me nervous. Please please investigate this issue with the 08s as well! this is our only car and I do not feel safe driving it, especially while waiting for the new harness. . But in the long run I worry about future failures if an accident did occur.

27 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2006 Hyundai Elantra

I was in casa grande arizona driving north on trekell road when I was hit in the driver side of my 2006 Hyundai Elantra while going through an intersection. The front, back and passenger side was not damaged. The driver door, and part of the back door came in about 1 ft. I ended up with a bruise lung, 2 cracked ribs, and grade 2 cut on my spleen. Both front air bags went off, but driver side air bag did not deploy at all. I have alot of pictures that shows no damage what so ever to the front or passenger side. The only damage to my car was on the diver side where the front door and part of the back door came into the car about 1 ft. My car is a total loss.

28 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2008 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/27/2008

While on vacation in michigan, my spouse and I were hit by a drunk driver. We were traveling north bound on us 127 at 35mph, crossing over addison rd (in the town of addison) when the other driver crossed the road hitting us. (he was arrested at the scene of the accident. ) he struck us on the drivers side and dented the front and rear door to the point that neither door could be opened, and buckled the rear fender. The impact was severe enough that it blew out all the drivers side windows, blew out the passenger rear tire, bent the b-pillar on the drivers side, and ripped the top hinge completely off the drivers side rear door. It also creased the top middle driver's side of the roof. None of the side curtain airbags deployed and we felt that they should have. As a result of the accident, my spouse incurred a bump, 2 â½ in diameter by â½ tall, on the back right rear side of her head.

29 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 12/17/2007

I was travelling eastbound in the #1 lane on arden way. An SUV (Dodge durango) was travelling in the westbound #2 lane of arden way made a u-turn manuver over the center divider and crashed into my vehicle. My vehicle was pushed into a second vehicle as a result. Police report reflects this action. My airbags failed to deploy.

30 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2007 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/21/2007

I would like to file a complaint against Hyundai. I was recently involved in an accident in a 07' Hyundai Elantra in which I was hit by another vehicle on the driver's side. The posted speed limit was 45 mph and I'm sure that the driver was going at least that speed if not faster. The crash smashed the driver door, a portion of the back seat door as well as dislodging part of the front bumper. My front tire was also flat and bent out of shape. I was unable to open the driver-side door so I had to crawl out the passenger side. When I was hit, I felt as if I was about to pass out. My vision was black and fuzzy and I felt light-headed. I ended up having a large bump on my head, bruises on my shoulder as well as a bruise on my knee. I am very upset that the airbags didn't deploy because had the driver been going a little bit faster or had I been in a more serious accident I could have been seriously injured if not killed. One of the reasons I purchased the car was because of its so called 5 star safety rating. Had I known Hyundai had a problem with their airbags I never would have purchased the vehicle. I also noticed another complaint on this car for the same reason. I feel that Hyundai should make a statement about the disfunctional airbags if not recall the vehicle altogether. Furthermore I believe they need to stop advertising the safety features of the car until the problems are fixed. I would be very interested in knowing what my legal options are.

31 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2006 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/16/2007

All bags in the car failed to open upon impact, don't buy "Hyundai"s and Hyundai said that since 2002 they knew about this problem. With Elantras and other models. But did nothing to fix them.

33 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/01/2007

2001 Hyundai Elantra GLS -- one month ago (January 2007) the airbag light on the dashboard commenced slowly, dimly appearing then slowly fading out in one continuous cycle of several seconds. The condition repeats as long as the ignition is switched "on. " I noticed Hyundai's recall of the 2001 Hyundai Elantra for exactly that problem and took the vehicle to the local dealership for repair. Evidently, the condition is caused by one-or-more faulty airbag sensors. The result, according to the recall information, is that one or more airbags may not deploy when activated. The dealer entered my vehicle's VIN, told me that my vehicle was not covered by the recall and refused to replace the sensors without charge. Because of the exorbitant cost of replacement, please ask Hyundai to include my vehicle in the recall and/or mail me a letter of credit that I can give to the dealer to have this condition repaired. Accordingly, I must continue to drive the vehicle in this condition until I hear from you and/or Hyundai, here concerned. Otherwise, last June, 2006, both sun visor retaining brackets (holding the visor to the roof) cracked about a month apart, rendering the sun visors useless, in that the placement of the visor cannot be controlled. . . It simply drops and hangs when released from the retainer. My driver's side bracket broke just at the most inopportune moment, when the sun was shining directly into my eyes at a level just above the top of the steering wheel. I feel fortunate to have been on a lightly traveled road at the time, such that I pulled over onto the shoulder for a few minutes until the sun rose a bit higher in the sky. Those brackets should last longer than this; likewise, the airbag sensors should last longer than this. Abl. Pco.

34 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/23/2006

Failure to honor a recall 00v332000.

35 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2005 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/17/2006

Front/side airbag sensor/module appears to be defective. Since new occupant sensor will not reliably classify an adult sitting in the front passenger seat and most often turns airbags off or turns on and off during a trip. I have noted that this occurs with a variety of adults weighing from 100-150 lbs. I had the car into the dealer twice for reprogramming in December 2005. Problem still exists.
