All 4 brakes started to randomly lock up. I was driving and had to run it almost a 1/2 mile for a shoulder to pull over at. Upon stopping, the brakes were smoking all around the car and the front driver side actually caught flame. I'm guessing brake booster is the cause. Also front control arms are almost rusted through. The cars been well maintained and has around 185,000 miles on it. Has valve cover leak into spark plug port on cylinder 3 and has a very weak clutch that sometimes slips.

I have replaced both front and rear brakes on a 2005 Elantra gt hatchback at Hyundai dealerships. I had a problem with the brake pedal feeling mushy and almost hitting the floor when I tried to stop. The dealership examined the problem and wanted to replace the master brake cylinder, rear brakes, rotors and calipers to the tune of $1150. 00. I went to a small mechanic shop and I've now had the master brake cylinder replaced, new rear brakes put on a 2nd time [after 30 000 km] and yet it's been back twice for 'bleeding' numerous times in case air had gotten in to the system. Yet today [3 days after the last attempt to correct the brake pedal from nearly hitting the floor when I brake] it feels the same. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Has anyone heard of this problem with Elantras before?.

My concern with my 2003 Elantra is with the safety of rear braking system on the car. On oct 23, 2003 I had the service performed for the recall 31b03r1 brake campaign 061. At 10,834 miles. On oct 7, 2007 I had regular scheduled maintenance performed complete brake system flush at 45,072 miles. On July 8, 2008 both rear wheel cylinders were leaking an had to be replaced as well as the complete brake system flush again. At 51887 miles. On March 13, 2010 both rear wheel cylinders were found again to be leaking and had to be replaced at 64,638 miles. I have had my car serviced at regular 3,000 mile intervals with all required maintenance done at my dealership. My concern is the safety of the brake system on this car, leaking wheel cylinders that need to be replaced at 13,000 mile intervals seems like a serious safety issue to me.

I had the vehicle inspected on March 3, 2007, it passed inspection. On March 23, 2007 lost the brakes. Upon dealer's inspection of the brakes, they found the pads came completely detached from the shoes. Also, the wheel cylinders were leaking. The brakes and wheel cylinders were fine 3 weeks prior to them blowing apart. Now I am out hundreds of dollars and am very thankful this occurred on a back road and not on a highway. Someone could have been easily killed.

The brakes on my 2003 Hyundai Elantra began grinding at only 39k miles. I contacted the dealership and was told brakes were not covered by my extended warranty. I took the car to midas because of the lifetime warranty and the brakes were not failing due to normal wear and tear. The front pads had a metal plate on the outside which had come lose and was cutting into the hub. The mechanic said this was a defect in the brake pads that occurred when they got hot and the adhesive came loose. During the inspection, they also discovered that the cylinders on the rear brakes were leaking. I ended up with over $600 in brake repairs.
: the contact stated prior to the brakes failing, an odor of brake fluid was noticed. After the vehicle was towed to the service dealer, the problem was identified as leakage of the rear wheel cylinders, which were replaced. The vehicle was taken to an out of state service dealer for scheduled service and the contact was informed the brakes needed adjustment. When the vehicle was taken to the service dealer, the contact was informed the rear brake cylinders were leaking again, after only 8118 miles and 13 months time. The manufacturer was not alerted.
The contact owns a 2003 Hyundai Elantra. Beginning on December 17, 2005 the brake pedal extended to the floor when depressed. The failure occurred intermittently. When the vehicle was inspected by the manager at the dealer, the contact was informed that the brakes should not do that, but there was nothing wrong. The vehicle was towed a month and a half after it was purchased because the contact smelled brake fluid and the brake pedal was extending to the floor. The dealer initially believed that the brake cylinder failed. Currently, the front brakes are scraping and still extending to the floor. On October 1, 2007 and October 2, 2007, the vehicle was thoroughly inspected by the dealer and they found no failures. The powertrain was unknown. The current mileage was 38,000 and failure mileage was 21,344.
The contact stated there was a thumping noise coming from the brakes. This occurred after driving the vehicle for a while. The vehicle has been to the dealership three times. The first time they replaced the cylinder, turned the rear drums, and rounded out the letter. The second and third times the dealership rounded out the letter again. This was a temporary solution, and the noise came back every time the vehicle was repaired. Updated 02/07/06.
Knocking noise from rear brakes. After the following repairs I am now being told it is general maintenance and since I live in maui it is not abnormal to have dirt on the brake pads and for it to make the knocking noise. This general maintenance is at my cost and has been happening for months. Could end up a monthly expense. I don't believe this is the problem if so why are more cars having the same problems. 3/2003 front pads glazed before I got home the knocking 3/2003 knocking noise and window pillar around windows 5/2003 found -improperly formed brake shoes- replaced 5/28-29/2003 shoe & lining-improperly formed brake shoes 6/5-6/6/2003 bad seals -rear wheel cylinders ordered 6/23/2003 replaced bad seals -rear wheel cylinders ordered 7/14-7/18/2003 painted door frames due to warping of door trim 10/13/2003 cleaned brake pads 10/14/2003 noise is back.
