1 Equipment problem of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/23/2026

I am reporting an active odometer fraud case on a 2017 Hyundai Elantra, VIN: [xxx]. The seller listed this vehicle on facebook marketplace claiming it had 65,000 miles and was in like-new condition. Upon running a carfax report, the vehicle shows over 300,000 actual miles. The carfax also shows the vehicle already had 98,000 miles recorded in 2018, making the current 65,000-mile claim impossible. When I confronted the seller about the discrepancy, they claimed they purchased the vehicle from a mechanic and were unaware of the mileage history. They then immediately blocked me and deleted their facebook listing. Shortly after, a second listing appeared under what appears to be the seller's wife's account advertising the same vehicle. The vehicle appears to have originated from illinois and is being sold in indiana, making this a cross-state fraud. The seller operates as a title-free flipper, never placing the title in their name, which appears to be an intentional strategy to avoid a paper trail. I have documentation including screenshots of the original listing, the carfax report, and records of my communications with the seller. I am prepared to provide all of this upon request. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

5 Equipment problem of the 2020 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/22/2026

This complaint documents a recurring automatic transmission failure resulting in three complete vehicle shutdowns during active operation — two at highway speed and one in an active turning lane. The most recent failure occurred within 15 minutes of the vehicle being released from an authorized Hyundai dealership in college park, maryland, whose general manager admitted in a recorded call that the vehicle was released knowing the transmission was unrepaired and unsafe. The first failure occurred in 2025 on a highway with no prior warning. The vehicle was towed to the dealership, where the transmission was confirmed defective and repaired under warranty. The second failure occurred in January 2026, again on a highway with no warning. The dealership held the vehicle from January through may 2026 — four months — with no updates despite multiple owner inquiries. In April 2026 the dealership confirmed the transmission had failed again and was seeking Hyundai corporate authorization for the warranty repair. On may 21, 2026 I was told the vehicle was ready and the transmission had been fully repaired under warranty. This was false. On [xxx], within 15 minutes of leaving the dealership, the transmission failed a third time, completely shutting the vehicle down in an active turning lane with no warning. The general manager at Hyundai college park later admitted in a recorded call that the transmission was never repaired and the vehicle was released only to recover the dealership's rental car, with full knowledge it was unsafe. All three failures were confirmed by the authorized dealer. Component is available for inspection. Nhtsa investigation and recall consideration requested. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

6 Equipment problem of the 2023 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/15/2026

This is the second time the horn has stopped working. The first time was a year or two ago (records available on request), and both of the two horn units failed. The manufacturer Hyundai replaced them both and told me the issue they were having was the stamped housing of the horn has a seam that folds up and collects water, may freeze, and causes the unit to fail. Clearly they installed two replacement units of the same style because both units just failed again. The way I found out was someone almost changed lanes into me, I tried to honk to alert them to not collide with me, and the horn didn't work. Thankfully I was able to stop fast enough to avoid the collision. I will be taking it to Hyundai for replacement again within the next few days. This needs to become a recall because clearly Hyundai hasn't accepted yet that they need to correct their design of this safety feature.

8 Equipment problem of the 2014 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/13/2026

Vehicle was parked and turned off in a residential driveway when a fire spontaneously ignited in the engine compartment. There were no warning lights, unusual sounds, or symptoms prior to the incident. The fire department responded and extinguished the fire using dry chemical suppressant and water. The vehicle was a total loss. The fire appears to have originated in the front engine compartment area. The vehicle was not involved in a collision. The vehicle has a 1. 8l nu dohc engine and 4-wheel abs system. This vehicle falls under known NHTSA recalls and class action litigation related to spontaneous engine fires in Hyundai Elantra vehicles, including issues related to defective abs/hecu modules and engine defects associated with the nu engine series.

9 Equipment problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/23/2026

Upon arriving at my condo after work, pulled into the driveway that goes to 2nd floor underground. Had my foot on the brake and when the garage door started to rise, I put foot on gas pedal to inch forward and the gas pedal went all the way down. Braking did not stop the car. The car crashed through the garage door but that did not stop car. It continued till the car hit a cement boulder which finally stopped it. After car hit the cement boulder it continued to try and run. Obviously a huge risk factor when your car accelerates and can't be stopped. If that had happened on the street, I can't even imagine what could have happened. The car was totaled so I doubt if it has been checked by anyone. And there was no warning at all. Had not noticed anything unusual that give me any hint that the gas pedal would stick all the to the floor. When I researched unexplained acceleration there was reference to the throttle and 4 or 5 reasons why it would accelerate on its own.

Subject: escalation of unresolved case – request for NHTSA assistance dear NHTSA, for several months, I have been dealing with an unresolved issue regarding my Hyundai vehicle. On February 18th, I was told the supervisor of my case manager at Hyundai motor America would contact me within 5 to 10 business days. Today is March 16th, and despite repeated requests, no supervisor has reached out. As a dialysis patient without a vehicle, these prolonged delays are affecting my health and safety. Since I have not been able to receive a response from the supervisor of my case manager, I am escalating this matter to your agency. I have a full email chain documenting these events, which I can provide upon request. For transparency, I am copying my case manager and Hyundai national customer service. I appreciate your assistance with this urgent matter. Sincerely, [xxx] tel. [xxx] [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

14 Equipment problem of the 2022 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/17/2026

The horn on my vehicle all of a sudden does not work. Im afraid that I'll be in a accident because im unable to blow it. Plenty times ive almost been in a accident & it was literally nothing I could do because my horn isnt working. Secondly, something is going in with the suspension on the right side of my car. Too much rattling noise. I see in the complaints im not the only one having this issue. Third but not least, the ac isnt working. Blowing out hot air. Ive also seen where alot of people is complaining about that ive had this car only a year and it has too many recall issues.

15 Equipment problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/09/2026

Car developed a sudden loss of power. Would start, although roughly (took a couple of times to start), then once shifted into drive, the engine was very sluggish, like it was stuck in a lower gear. Upon stopping and restarting the engine, the problem would sometimes resolve and the car could be driven normally, however it felt unsafe to drive at normal speeds. No warning signs appeared. After consulting with a family member with this same year and model of Hyundai Elantra, it was suggested that the crankshaft position sensor might be at fault. After researching online, we discovered that this is a common issue with 2011-2016 Elantras with a 1. 8 liter engine. (reddit forums, also this link: [xxx] ). After trying transmission and other fluid flushes without luck, we took the car to a local Hyundai dealer. They said they were unable to replicate the issue but we told them to please replace the crankshaft position sensor, which they finally did. We were charged a total of $711. 40 for this repair of a simple part. Please note, another Hyundai dealer in town replaced this part for my brother's vehicle free of charge. This should be a recall item for this vehicle and it should be replaced for free. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

16 Equipment problem of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/01/2026

My car turned off while it was in drive. The oil pressure light flashed on for a second then disappeared. The car did not have anything else seem like it is wrong. I was put in dangers way because it turned off right before I was about to turn onto a very busy street and if it had done that in the middle of the street I would have gotten into an accident.

17 Equipment problem of the 2025 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/31/2026

Car was operating fine, then when we got on the highway, we noticed the check engine light had come on but were unable to get off the highway. The vehicle then began slowing down despite pressing down on the gas pedal. Vehicle continued to slow to about 15mph and we were hit by another car.

18 Equipment problem of the 2005 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/24/2026

Unknown on January 24,2026, I was thankfully traveling only about twenty mph a block from my home and something happened in the front drivers side suspension that caused me to almost hit three parked cars. Once I got stopped, the car couldn’t get get pushed forward, won’t roll at all forward, like it’s in park, but in neutral we were able to push it backwards to the house. It seems that it could be what is described in recall 069. However when I put my VIN in it said zero recalls. I see a letter to the original owner of this car, but I don’t see any info with the recall being repaired. The car hasn’t been worked on yet as we had a huge snowstorm the night the car broke and have since had sub zero temps and I’ve not found anyone to work on it in front of my home in this weather. How should I proceed? how can I get more info in regards to if this recall was remedied on this car?.

19 Equipment problem of the 2023 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/23/2026

Vehicle screen will shut off while driving and come back on randomly. This is not the first time I have reported it. I have reported it to my dealership, they looked at it and checked the vehicle. It happens so randomly but it's been over 2 years now that this has been happening. Of course when vehicle is getting inspected, it does not happen. I have asked them to update my software on my vehicle, they stated it does not need it but I bought this vehicle on sept 2023.

20 Equipment problem of the 2019 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/11/2026

While driving back into town on the interstate, my oil plug fell out of my car. It was not known at the time the oil plug was what fell out. I remember hearing a clunk underneath my car. About 5-10 minutes after I heard the noise, my oil light flashed, and I could feel my car unable to accelerate further. I pulled over to the side of the road and my engine stalled. I had it towed to a body shop. The next morning, they called and said the oil plug was missing and there was no damage to my undercarriage. My engine was ruined and I was quoted $9,400 for the repair, which is probably more than the value of my car, effectively totaling it. My last oil change was November 12th, 2025 where my odometer was at 82,633. This occurred after 3,393 miles and about 2 months from this most recent oil change. I had not seen oil leaking from my vehicle well before this happened, and I had no indicator lights on or flashing well before this incident. My engine has not previously been checked for Hyundai TSB 21-em-003h, Hyundai TSB 21-em-004h, or kia TSB 222.

21 Equipment problem of the 2023 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/09/2026

My horn continues to short out. It has happened five or more times in two years. (I purchased this car in 2023 and the day I purchased it, I was driving home and found out that the horn had lost sound, I called the dealership and they told me to bring it up the next day. When I brought it up the next day it started working again and they couldn't figure out what was wrong. I then went back home and by that next week my horn was completely not working so I had to bring it back up to my dealership. ) my horn not working puts me and others in risk for many of reasons. For starters, it takes away my primary warning and communication tool on the road. I have no way to warn others if they are drifting into my lane, backing into me or any other accident that can happen while driving. I have taken my car to the dealership to get it fixed multiple times. This has been a problem since the day I bought my car. Every time my horn is about to fully short out, it slowly loses its sound and will come and go for multiple days slowly losing sound. I don't have my recent documentation from taking it to the dealership to get fixed, but I have one or two forms from the beginning.

22 Equipment problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/09/2026

Vehicle developed clunking noise in the steering. Was told it was coupler issue. The dealership, nlorthbay Hyundai, in petaluma, California, was negligent in the replacement, creating a grinding metal on metal noise, and damaged the steering column as well. The dealership refused failed to correct the damage and attempted to defraud me over $3,000 for an entirely new steering column, and refuse to honor promised repair warranty despite their own negligence that created the damage. I found out that Hyundai models including mine have coupler issues involving recalls, years ago. I was not aware of this, and so not sure if my vehicle was part of the recall. However, Hyundai motor America failed to notify me to take my vehicle in for a safety check for the vehicle coupler. And while I found that that my vehicle qualified for an extended warranty due to the recall, hma so lacking in responsibility, sound business and moral ethics, let alone serious concern for my safety, claims that my vehicle is past the extended warranty by a completely insignificant mileage. As far as am concerned my vehicle is not safe to drive, and it remains at the dealership while I exhaust all avenues to have my car fixed. I have documents including clear repair notes and service request documents to support my complaint. Complaint being filed against both the dealership, northbay Hyundai and the manufacturer, Hyundai motor America.

23 Equipment problem of the 2021 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/08/2026

Description of the safety problem: in the early morning hours of January 8, while driving my Hyundai vehicle, I ran off the road into a ditch. I was extremely disoriented and activated the vehicle’s built-in blue link sos emergency assistance system for help. I successfully connected with a blue link operator and repeatedly told her that I did not know where I was and that I was scared and needed assistance. While I was actively requesting help, the sos call was disconnected. After the disconnection, I attempted to reconnect using the sos system but was unable to do so, despite the vehicle having power and an active, paid telematics subscription. The system did not reconnect or provide further assistance. I was forced to call 911 from my personal cell phone to obtain emergency help. This resulted in a delayed response and a $1,300 towing expense that I would not have incurred if the sos system had functioned as marketed. This incident raises serious safety concerns. The vehicle’s emergency sos system failed during an active emergency, disconnected while the driver was disoriented and requesting help, and provided no ability to reconnect. This defeats the purpose of an integrated emergency safety feature and could place drivers at risk of serious injury or death. I am reporting this incident so NHTSA can evaluate the reliability and safety of Hyundai’s blue link sos emergency system during real-world emergencies.

I have been having this issue for several months. First, it was the steering wheel being locked. I believe at one point and time on the past they updated the computer on that vehicle. But this time the dealer told me there is nothing they can do. As of today, the car won’t start. How can I go to work? there is no safety recall for this, but I didn’t brake the car’s computer, I don’t even know and want to know where it is located.

28 Equipment problem of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 12/04/2025

The gas pedal, would not work as I was trying to accelerate when going from the ramp onto the freeway. The pedal had no pump in it, it just went all the way down as I was trying to press and the car started slowing down. I had to pull over on the side of the freeway and restart the car for the pedal to start working again. I came to the dealership the next day on 12/5/25, at around 5:45pm in which I was scheduled to come back at 8am on 12/6/25. My safety was at risk, because the car lost pedal power for me to pickup speed as I merged onto the freeway. I brought it in for inspection, at the dealership I purchased it from. There were not any signals or displays that came on during the incident.

I have 2 Hyundai Elantras that have had to send to the dealership to replace the horns multiple times. I had the same issue with my venue, which appears to have had some type of NHTSA action, and feel that the Elantras should be included on said action as they utilize the same horn components. The trunk latch was recalled. I supposedly got it fixed in July 2024. It was functioning at the time it was supposedly fixed. It does say it’s a safety issue. Now it is not working, exactly the symptoms of the recall, not open from the inside. There isn’t a key hole to open it. My belongings are inside, and if I get a flat, there is no way of opening the trunk. I’ve called their corporate office. They want to charge me a diagnostic fee, of $200. 00 to check the recall. Isn’t it their legal obligation to check if the recall has taken affect?.
