36 Equipment problem of the 2008 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/15/2025

Has not yet been officially diagnosed by a dealer or independent service center, but while turning into a neighborhood at around 15-25 mph the car jerked and the engine suddenly stalled while I was still in the middle of the road. Thankfully I rolled into the neighborhood before an oncoming car made its way over, but it was close. The gas pedal no longer worked, and I had to restart the car. It only drove once more before shutting down and the engine will no longer turn over.

37 Equipment problem of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/13/2025

When driving at low speeds(20mph and under) vehicle stalls. It appears to happen at random. It makes driving pretty dangerous for other vehicles that would not be able to tell the vehicle has stalled and hit me at low speeds. All electrics stay on, there is no check engine light. The problem first appeared after ignition lock was broken, even before replaced it started stalls at low speeds, seems to possibly happen more after engine is warmed up.

39 Equipment problem of the 2025 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/05/2025

Driver attention warning system. It is often incorrect, and extremely annoying, and distracting. It can not be shut off. It does not understand that wind, and potholes cause somewhat erratic driving habits, coupled with overly sensitive steering systems. Issue occurred on the maine turnpike, at legal speeds, and persisted for the entire journey from gray to houlton. Approximately every five minutes, I would get an alert.

40 Equipment problem of the 2007 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/03/2025

I was driving and I felt my car sputter and lunge forward slightly. Then my car lost power and when I pressed down on the accelerator it would not give out any power. The battery light came on and the car would not start after pulling over.

41 Equipment problem of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/01/2025

Issue: Hyundai recall denial for paint peeling defect my vehicle qualifies for the Hyundai paint-peeling recall, and the paint deterioration matches the defect described by Hyundai. Despite this, Hyundai has denied my recall repair twice. Approximately 2 1/2 years before the recall was issued, I applied a small touch-up to the affected area to slow the deterioration. This was done solely to protect the vehicle and occurred long before any recall existed. Hyundai is now using that minor touch-up as a reason to deny the recall repair, even though the underlying paint defect was already present. The paint continues to peel and worsen. Hyundai's refusal to honor the recall appears unreasonable and inconsistent with the purpose of a safety/defect recall, especially since the touch-up did not cause the defect and was done years before Hyundai acknowledged the issue. I am requesting that NHTSA review Hyundai's handling of this recall and their denial of legitimate claims.

42 Equipment problem of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/22/2025

I’m writing as a concerned consumer to flag a serious flaw in current vehicle VIN labeling standards. Specifically, the use of tamper-evident paper VIN stickers on body panels (such as rear doors) is unnecessarily fragile, outdated, and punitive — with no warning or protection for normal car owners. I recently purchased a 2024 vehicle and accidentally peeled part of a VIN sticker located on the rear door jamb while cleaning the interior. There was no visible warning on the label, no digital alert, and no indication that this sticker had legal or resale significance. After researching, I learned that this small, unprotected sticker can: •invalidate certified pre-owned (cpo) eligibility •flag the car during future inspections, even if there’s zero damage •require a complicated and expensive ($100–$300) process to replace •create suspicion over a vehicle’s history despite clean title and ownership this is unacceptable in 2025. We are in an era of digital keys, over-the-air updates, and software-based identity systems — and yet a fragile, unmarked paper sticker can still materially harm a consumer’s vehicle value. My ask: please consider updating fmvss 115 or 567 to allow for: •laser-etched, permanent VIN identifiers on all major body panels •digital VIN linking through ecu or oem ownership systems •elimination or redundancy of peel-sensitive stickers that have no protection or warning a normal consumer performing normal maintenance or cleaning should not be able to accidentally reduce the value of their car or disqualify it from certification. I urge you to take this issue seriously and consider this as part of ongoing vehicle identification modernization efforts.

46 Equipment problem of the 2023 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/02/2025

The issue involves the hybrid electric powertrain or electrical control system in my 2023 Hyundai Elantra limited hybrid. The vehicle has shut off multiple times while driving, with complete loss of power and propulsion. This poses a serious safety risk, as it happens without warning in the middle of the road. Restarting the car requires shifting into park and trying multiple times to turn it off, but the vacuole turns back on the first try. I have experienced this issue several times, including twice during a 300-mile highway trip. After each shutdown, the dashboard displays multiple warning lights, including the check engine light, battery light, oil pressure light, and hybrid system warning (orange car icon). I took a photo immediately after the most recent failure to document these warnings. The vehicle has been inspected three times by two different Hyundai dealerships. Both confirmed the vehicle is under warranty but have not repaired or diagnosed the issue, citing that they cannot replicate it. They have driven it ~200 miles without success. However, they have not pulled ecu data or freeze-frame codes, even though warning lights were active at the time of failure. There are no symptoms or warning messages before the failure — the vehicle shuts off suddenly. The car is available for inspection, and I am in the process of opening a formal case with Hyundai. This is a significant and recurring safety hazard that must be addressed. This issue has an occurred a various speeds including during acceleration and braking. The picture attached is the dashboard after the I indent has occurred and have shifted to park after stopping to try and restart the car to get out of the middle of the road.

47 Equipment problem of the 2015 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/02/2025

I had a trunk latch recall done on my car in June 2024. Immediately after that, my trunk stopped opening with the key fob. The latch would click but not release. A few weeks ago, it started doing the same thing with the release lever by the driver's side. There was no way to get the trunk open, so I went to a different Hyundai dealership than where my recall was done at (due to travel costs from school). They had to replace the trunk latch because the recall latch was installed incorrectly. It was an almost $700 expense.

There is an issue with mice getting into the front of the car. It smells like urine and is unsafe to breathe. I have cleaned out air filters monthly and find nests every time and have even found a dead mice. My car has nothing that would attract the mice. I have tried everything and spent so much money to prevent this from happening. Apparently with this car it is a known issue, and has not been fixed.

53 Equipment problem of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/20/2025

The horn stopped working in our 2024 Elantra. This is a widespread issue (see NHTSA complaints and reddit posts). I called ahead to verify with the san leandro dealership that parts were in stock to perform this repair under warranty (prior to scheduling appointment). We arrived and were told that parts were actually not available (after a 3-hour diagnostic). What changed? Hyundai issued a TSB (technical service bulletin) informing dealerships of how this issue is to be repaired (designating a specific part number, while excluding otherwise qualified Hyundai parts). Without TSB, the dealership could have performed this repair under warranty with the in-stock parts. The dealership could still perform the repair, but Hyundai would not reimburse them under warranty. With a[xxx] wife, I was unable to wait and return later for the warranty to cover the repair. I paid $429 to the dealership for the repair to be done with in-stock parts. I left the dealership with a genuine & working Hyundai horn, but it was not covered by Hyundai’s warranty. Hyundai has refused to reimburse us. Two key takeaways: 1 - Hyundai is denying there is a widespread issue while secretly telling dealerships how to address it. The unpublished TSB demonstrates that Hyundai is aware of a widespread safety issue, and is failing to issue a recall. The majority of nhsta complaints for this vehicle reference horn failure. This is a safety issue. I was involved in an accident where I could not warn another driver before the collision. 2 - the TSB is a mechanism by which Hyundai is refusing to perform repairs that should be covered by warranty. This is a violation of Hyundai’s stated commitment to customers that is not stated even in the fine print of the warranty. 54 Equipment problem of the 2015 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/17/2025

For the past 2 years, the car shuts off while driving. There is no warning lights or other warning that it is going to shut off. The steering doesn't lock but the car shuts off. I have to come to a stop and then restart the car. It does restart every time. This seems to happen frequently and then doesn't do it for a few weeks. I have had it looked at by 4 different mechanics, had multiple sensors replaces, replaced coil packs, and the problem still continues. The Hyundai dealer looked at it one time and said they do not know what is wrong.

55 Equipment problem of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra

57 Equipment problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/28/2025

When I am driving with my seatbelt on for no reason at all my seatbelt comes undone doesn't happen all the time but several times it has happened to me. And then there is something wrong with the transmission. Doesn't shift right away so it like jerks or lunges when it finally goes into gear. I have noticed both of these problems since 2/28/2025.

58 Equipment problem of the 2022 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/26/2025

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra hybrid blue intermittently displays check hybrid system stop safety in instrument cluster screen, which stops the car from driving in either Smart or normal. This happens on the roads and highways. This is very unsafe because at high speed when this happens you could easily get rear-ended because the car drops its speed and cannot accelerate any faster than 30 miles per hour and then it degrades to 20 miles per hour until I can find a safe place to park and turn off the car to do the reset to be able to drive again. This happens because the 12-volt lithium battery is not providing an acceptable amount of charge to the hybrid battery. This was also confirmed when I took the battery to get tested and it failed the test. The next part that is unsafe, is replacing the low 12-volt lithium battery, because it is connected to a high voltage 240-volt lithium-ion polymer battery; there a normal person cannot simply replace it. You have to know electronics to make sure you do not get electrocuted. In addition, it takes hours to take out the battery and then it’s hard to find to purchase. I feel Hyundai makes this process difficult as after spending hours to screw it out, you cannot locate the item anywhere. When I spoke to the Hyundai parts person, they could not locate it until I actually brought in the battery. The 12-volt lithium battery was nonrefundable and cost twice as much ($545. 92) as I saw online, as low as $282 once I obtain the part number from the Hyundai order, which again is nonrefundable. I feel they make sure this cannot be found to force you to come to them to buy the battery, because all the labels or characters on the battery were not able to locatable. This was proven by me emailing the battery images to the parts person who was trying to find it, but could not until I bring in the actual battery. I was also told it is a special order and that they do not keep them onsite and have to be ordered and wait 7 to 10 days(pdf attach).

59 Equipment problem of the 2023 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/25/2025

Unknown I had the lane assist feature on and was taking the second lane from right to turn off to exit when the alarm went off, the wheel turned itself and it started braking. There was nothing where it was trying to avoid and actually almost had me run into another by turning me left back onto the freeway while trying to stop. It’s never happened to me before and I take that way regularly.

60 Equipment problem of the 2005 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/21/2025

As I was driving about 25-30 mph when the front drivers side lower control arm snapped, resulting in loss of control and steering, which could’ve caused a major accident if driven on a highway/interstate at a higher rate of speed. The damage revealed the control arm had rotted from the inside and had broken from the bushing connected to the frame, with no indication of rust in the outside, which has been something that has documented with other same generation Hyundais. I have not been able to bring it to a dealer or mechanic to have it checked.

61 Equipment problem of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/18/2025

My trunk latch hasn’t worked since January. I took it in to mccarthy olathe Hyundai in olathe, KS on January 13th for an appointment but they didn’t have the parts available so we rescheduled. When the parts were in, my fiancé took it back on February 18th, 2025 but was told that the repair couldn’t be done since there was previous trunk damage. I explained via the telephone that the damage to my truck was minor from an incident two years prior and that it hasn’t caused any issues with opening or shutting the trunk since. But the gentleman I talked to reiterated that the recall repair to my trunk latch couldn’t be done. I recently found out that the recall was marked as completed when it was not. I don’t know what to do!.

63 Equipment problem of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/22/2025

At approx 1000 the horn fuse blew and rendered horn inoperable. Fuse was replaced by dealer. At approx 1500 miles horn was inoperable again, dealer recommended horn replacement however the horns are currently on back order. In both cases, no lamps or messages were available in the car indicating the horn was inoperable.

64 Equipment problem of the 2023 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/21/2025

I bought my car April 2023 brand new. I noticed today the horn was not working. I have less that 30k miles on my car. Hyundai is telling me the horn is not included in the warranty. Someone cut me off and I tried to honk my horn to tell them they were close and it didn't work.

65 Equipment problem of the 2022 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/10/2025

My car has 62,000 miles on it just about three weeks ago. The air conditioner evaporator went out now the car is making a bunch of noise and it’s blowing very hot air. Car should not be having this issue with less miles is this. I took it to the dealership for a diagnostic check and they told me that this is a known problem with these cars I asked was there a recall on the part due to a failing with less miles, as such the mechanic told me I need to put in a complaint and maybe something will be done so I’m sitting with this car and I literally had to keep the windows down to stay cool.

68 Equipment problem of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/03/2025

At 16,000 miles the horns on my vehicle failed. This occured on busy tollway just as a driver began to enter my lane from the right side. When I tried to engage my horn to warn him I was unable and had to slam on my brakes to avoid a collision. The driver behind me came within inches of rear ending me and he swerved into another lane almost causing another collision. Then the original driver thought I was brake checking him and went around me an slammed on his brakes in retribution. Horns that were used to repair by dealer were new oem's. At 24,000 miles a similar experience occured where I had to slam on my brakes because I was unable to warn another driver that we were about to collide, but the horns failed. Once again the dealer had to replace the defective horns with more of the same oem horns that have been proven by myself and others to be unreliable. In researching complaints about this issue I have seen numerous other owners of 23 and 24 Elantras (and konas) making same complaint, some of which had to have their horns replaced multiple times. I complained to Hyundai corporate and requested an alternate replacement horn as now I have to drive a 1 year old car that I don't know if the horns are going to work or not, and despite all the evidence I presented to them, they refused. I cannot allow any other family members to drive my $21,000 car for fear that they might not be as "lucky" as I was in avoiding an accident. I am told that the NHTSA does not consider a horn as a safety item and therefore not within their jurisdiction. I find that difficult to understand due to the lack of horns definitely put me in a position twice that directly related to my and the other driver's safety. What other reason could there be for a horn other than waking up drivers at a redlight who are looking at their phones instead of paying attention? I'm sure that when henry Ford put horns on his cars that it was not for any other reason than safety.

70 Equipment problem of the 2022 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 12/31/2024

My Hyundai Elantra hybrid has had the horn and front radar go out 3 times. It will eventually start working again. Heavy rain or snow will disable the front radar and then it won’t go away for a while. When the front radar is out, I cannot use cruise control. It is disabled. I feel adaptive cruise control is much safer and cruise control in general. Apparently many people have similar issues. The horn not working often is also a huge concern. I am concerned I cannot rely on my car.
