Once again the car began to shake violently and started lunging forward while driving within city limits. Check engine warning light came on. I pulled over and shut the car off. When I restarted the car, the check engine light was no longer illuminated and the car seemed to drive somewhat normally. This was not the first time this happened, and from what I can tell by reading other similar complaints on the NHTSA website, several people are having these issues as well. It appears to be the ecm, engine control module. Hyundai needs to address this issue ASAP. It is very dangerous to drive this vehicle. Do not allow them to say you need new spark plugs or a software update. This is a safety issue that needs a recall immediately.

The contact owns a 2019 Hyundai Elantra. Since the software update was performed, the vehicle experienced several safety failures. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, an abnormal grinding sound was coming from the steering wheel while turning. There was no warning light illuminated. An audible chime was heard. There was also an abnormal burning odor coming from the vehicle. There were no issues with the car until eps (red) and esc off (yellow) lights came on when the car was started one evening, and in turn the power steering was lost. Vehicle was driven earlier in the day without any problems. It was parked for about 30 minutes or so, and when it was turned on again the lights came on and the steering wheel felt like it was locked. It is very difficult to turn the steering wheel at low speeds. Vehicle was taken to a local Hyundai dealer where error codes c1260, c1604, and c1513 were diagnosed. The dealer performed the steering angle re-calibration and the ecu software update, but the errors persisted. The dealership stated that electronic power steering column and the stop lamp switch needed to be replaced. These exact two parts were a subject of two separate recalls for this vehicle (campaigns # 110 and 127) and were repaired/serviced in 2015 and the recall was closed. It is very strange that both of these parts would fail again without any notice, particularly the electronic power steering column, considering that the car only has 47000 miles and this part was repaired in 2015.

The clock spring has worn after roughly 55k miles and just being out of warranty. Dealer replacement is $300 and airbags will not deploy without repair. This began after going over rough brick pavers and the light is intermittently on, probably about 80-90% of the time. As I understand it the veracruz and santa fe models had a similar issue a few year prior (11-01-052) and online searches show this is a common issue with (at least) early production elantas. While owner diy replacement is possible, it is not recommended due to srs system importance as well as lack of ability to recalibrate software.

Vehicle was took in to dealership last 4/22/2015 for eps recall NHTSA campaign number: 15v100000 and Hyundai recall 127. They completed a software update. The recall does not fix the problem on 5/26/2016 was driving the 2010 Elantra and eps light came on causing loss of steering capability. Called Hyundai they said it was not part of recall take to dealer. Dealer on 6/1/2016 stated that the software update was done but did not fix eps steering issue and would need to replace steering column $2150. The recall obviously did not fix the problem and after doing research online have noticed many others are having the same issue. If a recall is to fix the problem the recall should be done fully and correctly not cheaply and halfway. The eps causes stiff steering making it impossible for a person to steer. This could lead to many accidents and possibly death. The light comes on and immediatley with out warning the steering is automatically gone. While driving I was almost in an accident because after losing steering I tried make a turn off the main road into a subdivision to get off the main road. As I was turning at a very low speed below 5 mph I was unable to stay in my lane and a car was exiting the subdivision. Although there would be minor damages, this could be different if I was on the highway at an exit coming around a turn. The loss of steering is unsafe and I do hope that the right measures are eventually taken to resolve this issue before someone is killed. The vehicle has less than 45000 miles on it.
