39 Suspension problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/18/2022

The component that failed was the front driver's side spring, and the piece that broke off is available for inspection upon request. The part failed while trying to leave my driveway to go to work on the morning of fri, 3/18/22. Had the part failed while driving on the highway, I could have had an accident and worse. The vehicle was serviced by an independent service station, and verified that the spring fractured and had replaced the struts/springs on both front sides. The part has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance reps or others. There were no warning lights, but I only heard a very loud scraping noise as I tried to exit my driveway. There were no other symptoms or warnings. Side note: there is safety recall on the 2011 Hyundai Elantra for the exact same issue on cars in the northeast us states that salt their roads in the winter. That safety recall is NHTSA campaign number: 15v629000.

40 Suspension problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/17/2022

My daughter was driving my 2011 Hyundai Elantra and she got a flat tire on the drivers side front. Upon inspection, I discovered that the front strut spring had fractured and part of it went through the sidewall of the tire. Found out that there is a recall for this exact problem for certain 2011 Elantras. Called the Hyundai customer service line and was told that this particular Elantra was not part of the recall. Why not? the recall is to replace springs that, because of corrosion caused by road salt used in winter in certain states (my state NJ being one of the states affected), fracture and puncture the tires. This is exactly what happened to this vehicle. I am working on getting Hyundai to make repairs but I don't have much hope.

41 Suspension problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/07/2022

My 2011 Hyundai Elantra with only 73,000 miles on it was affected. Front coil suspension springs cracked during winter month when road salt was being used for a big storm. I live in northern ky almost on the ohio border. It gets cold here and road salt is used during the winter months which is why I believe the road salt has caused corrosion on the front coil springs . This defect has put my safety at risk as well as a passenger in my vehicle. I never received any type of recall notice . . . . . . But see there is one. The repairs cost well over $1,000. 00 . I have been doing alot of research on so many others with the same issue and according to many the recall is only for month specific manufacture date based on the date of manufacture. This is widespread far more than a few months that the vehicle was made. This is something that has slipped through the cracks and is very dangerous as I was told by the shop, in my case the edge of the broken coil spring was sharp and could have caused the tire the blow out. Could have been deadly. I am seeking a refund of the repair cost. I do have an invoice for repairs if needed as I had to repair immediately . This all happened with no warning .

44 Suspension problem of the 2020 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 12/14/2021

Hello, I have a 2020 Hyundai Elantra  5npd84lf6lh525671 VIN.   the car has a major problem with the steering and suspension at speeds over 45 mph.   I am talking with myra at this time after dialing 1-800-633-5151 at Hyundai cust care (case #19086362).   she told me she is on the west side location.   I asked where is that and she stated she is unable to let me know where.   the car does not hold the road and the suspension and steering is not working well at speeds of 45mph or faster.   this is a very dangerous situation and this year and model of Hyundai should be examined before someone loses control because of a defect made at Hyundai.   myra stated she does not have a recall for this problem and I am at a complete loss for what to do.   she stated an appointment is not easily made until Dec 31st because of staffing issues.   I looked online and also found other comments with this same exact issue so I know it is a major problem that needs to be addressed.   please let me know what I should do before a tragic accident happens with this and other 2020 Elantra vehicles.   thank you in advance.

45 Suspension problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/29/2021

Subframe is rotted. It snapped while driving; braking the control arm in the process. The lives of my children and myself were put at risk. If we had been on a busy road or highway, ourselves and others would have been at serious risk of sever injury and/or possible death. It has not been seen by a service center, incident happened 11/29/2021. The vehicle was inspected by a personal mechanic to find the cause of the malfunction. There were know warning signs before the component failure.

47 Suspension problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 10/15/2021

Traveling 25-30 mph on a gravel road, car shuddered and seemed to tilt sightly to the left. At the same time a loud grinding noise was heard and steering felt funny. On stopping and exiting the car, I saw the left rear wheel was toed to the left, and leaning so that the top of the tire was extended beyond the fender arch. Looking beneath the car, I could see the left rear control arm had torn loose from it's pivot point near the center of the uni-body, due to corrosion. The wheel hub was attached to the car solely by the torsion bar, brake line, and strut. The car had passed a state safety inspection exactly one year previous, and has approximately 115k miles, primarily in maine. There was no warning before the failure, such as sloppy steering or unstable handling. The gravel road where the failure occurred leads to my vacation cabin. To get there and return home I must cross a mountain pass which is steep and winding both ways, with a speed limit of 50mph. One side has sheer drop offs, and the other has solid rock ledge. If the failure had happened in this 10 mile stretch, the results could very well have been deadly. Someone may have offered to repair the corrosion damage to the uni-body, but I could never feel comfortable driving the car again. There was no damage to anything but the vehicle itself, so no police report was made. The extremely rural area where the failure occurred made it impractical to get the car to a Hyundai dealer. I junked the car with dubois towing and salvage, 438 river rd, mexico, maine, 04257 (207-364-7273).

48 Suspension problem of the 2007 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/29/2021

I felt as if I couldn’t control the car on the road, making a noise especially when hit the slightest bump. I had someone follow me to repair station to drop off the car. The mechanic said there was a lot of rust on frame crossbars, one place totally broke off. He said to check with Hyundai about the rust of the frame and not to drive the car. It is frightening to know that the frame parts rusted and broke like that. I have never had that happen to a car before. It is not safe to drive and when I called Hyundai they said there were no recalls with rust and frame breakage in my car. Other Hyundai’s were recalled for this very thing, I’m confused why mine has not been recalled for this safety issue.

49 Suspension problem of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 08/14/2021

My passenger side front strut exploded, drove the shock through the hood. Very dangerous! just happened, no warning. Schedule to take to dealer to see if covered by warranty. Car has 67,000 miles.

50 Suspension problem of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/27/2021

Right front suspension strut mount failed. This allowed the front strut to be come disconnected from the strut mount. The strut is free to to become disconneted from the cars frame. In my case the strut has traveled up through the strut mount and through the trim cover and impacting the inside of the cars engine compartment hood. Currently the strut is resting on the lower side of the strut mount. Only the weight of the car is keeping the strut inside the coil. This places the driver and occupants at risk of the strut over travaling . It also puts the mechanic at risk, because the coil spring is not being retained by the strut mount plate. The car can be inspected. I have not had the problem confirmed, the first indication of the problem was a audible rattle from the right front suspension.

51 Suspension problem of the 2008 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/18/2021

I own a ‘08 Hyundai Elantra. On July 21 my boyfriend and I were driving home when the rear sub-frame assembly failed, it rotted and broke where the control arms attach. The left rear tire was no longer attached to the frame of the car properly. It is available for inspection. It was a catastrophic failure, if we had being going faster it could have been deadly. Turns out Hyundai knew the materials they used were poor quality because in 2016 there was a service campaign for underbody corrosion treatment, which was completed on my vehicle. Fast forward to 2021, despite the corrosion treatment the sub-frame failed. My mechanic said the failure is not normal. Hyundai has not been responsive.

52 Suspension problem of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/09/2021

Anytime I hit a bump going at least 35 mph the back of my car jumps to one side or another. I've tried adding weight to the back of the car, less and more air in tires, new tires, but nothing seems to fix the problem. It has knocked me sideways on the roads and when on the highway or interstate it's gets worse as you are driving faster. Winter time I have to drive the least amount I can on the faster roads because it can get out of control. I read on Hyundai forums that this has been a problem for this type of car. Some people said getting better shocks reduces the problem, but does not completely fix it. I'm worried I will get into an accident because of this. I can't afford to try new shocks, because it doesn't completely fix the problem. It is also wearing the tires much faster then they should.

53 Suspension problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/12/2021

On 8/14/2021 I entered NHTSA complaint number 11429117. This was in regard to a fractured front coil spring in my 2011 Hyundai Elantra. Although there was a current recall (number 15v629000) on this issue, I was advised that my VIN did not qualify. Apparently the reasoning was that my car was built in a different location in alabama. I contested this with appropriate documention that clearly showed the broken pieces with corrosion. I ended up suffering the cost of replacement of both strut assemblies. As I had to go to an independent shop for my service I sent and escalated my issue through Hyundai to no avail. So now it's March 2023, and I receive a recall (excuse me, campaign - 984) to have an underbody cavity wax and anti corrosion spray applied to prevent corrosion of components due to road salt. So, as I attempted to pont out to Hyundain in 2021, my car and perhaps many others were at risk for these potentially fatal failures. Fortunately my spring broke as I entered my garage. Others may not have been so lucky. A break at high speed could take out a tire and that's the ball game. Continuing with the metaphor, Hyundai dropped the ball big time on this.

54 Suspension problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/10/2021

I was driving heard a loud bang then I got home and looked the strut coil fractured and snapped off and was hanging there.

55 Suspension problem of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/12/2021

Passenger side coil spring on my 2016 Elantra snapped after driving over a normally worn road. Taking to a mechanic tomorrow to assess the damage. This is the same issue my significant other had with his 2011 sonata and a friend of mine's 2015 Elantra. Finding it very odd that there are several recalls out for the same reason on many other years and on sonatas.

56 Suspension problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/28/2021

Tl the contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while reversing out of the driveway, the front passenger's side strut spring fractured and punctured the front passenger's side tire. The contact had the vehicle towed to an independent to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the front strut rods were damaged and need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 240,000.

57 Suspension problem of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/15/2021

58 Suspension problem of the 2021 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/12/2021

First of all suspension has a noise when going over speed bumps or bumps on the road have taking it to dealer they say they cant find nothing. And the transmission has a pop noise from time to time they say at the dealer that is due to the dct transmission but it hasn’t stop doing it plus a loud noise when you stop and go. They say there is no recall. Very disappointed with this tranny.

60 Suspension problem of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/25/2020

Both drivers and rear passenger door actuators have gone bad. I see online this is a very common issue and have been told by the dealership that it is as well. They will not cover the costs of repair. Rear shocks are also worn out and have been told by dealership that this is another common issue. Only 3 years old with 39k miles on the car.

61 Suspension problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/16/2020

Purchased what I believe is a lemon from the stamford Hyundai. Vehicle was not inspected and recall issues not addressed. Another car that hit mine stated that my car brake lights indicated I stopped when I actually released the brake pedal. I believe that the dealership over charged me for a defected vehicle and failed to address the brake pedal issue which caused my lane change accident. I would really appreciate it if someone can assist me with this serious infraction. Again my vehicle was in motion but the other driver said it appeared to be. I wasn't informed by the salesman of any defects or issues. The day of the accident I was driving in brooklyn NY on remsen avenue. Impact occurred on remsen and kings highway. Any assistance with this will be appreciated. I purchased this car cash 6405. 70 when the asking price was 4670. I've been ripped off and could have gotten killed. Help please.

63 Suspension problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 08/24/2020

I have experienced loss of control of this vehicle several times, including today. As I have faithfully maintained my car, I have come to the conclusion the design of the car is the issue. Specifically, when I attempt to apply the brakes, the car will not brake properly and is very hard to control. Today, I experienced the car hydroplane and thank goodness no other car was in front of me or on the side because it took me at least two minutes before I could gain control again. This occured when I made a right turn while driving about 25mph and no puddles of water were present. early April, I had a similar incident where I had to pump the brakes several times, although my brakes were replaced a few weeks prior. back in December 2019, I had a similar incident on the highway I-95 while driving home. I have it documented through aaa. My tire blew and the car failed to stop. I took it to my dealer and advised what happened and they insisted my tires and brakes were fine. I did some research online today and found I am not the only customer experiencing this issue. I saw several customers stating they received a recall notice, however, I have not received one. I am very concerned for my safety to the point I no longer want to drive this vehicle.

64 Suspension problem of the 2008 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 08/17/2020

Leaving work I heard a noise come from the car as I was leaving parking lot of the hospital which has a ten mph speed limit after being parked for 9 hours. I realized I felt like I was siting loopsided. So I turned off into my employers front lot to inspect the car. I walked around noticed the drivers side rear was lower. Tires looked ok so I looked underneath and say this rusty dragging strut/cross member piece. . Had to have car towed as I knew it was unsafe to drive as didn't know what else it damage tires, shocks etc. The car visually appeared to be dragging in the rear on drivers side due to this. This part was recalled by Hyundai in 2014 due to corrosion. .

65 Suspension problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/03/2020

According to my mechanic, rust on my coil spring caused it to fracture while driving and puncture my tire. My mechanic said it was "crazy" because there was a fresh fracture from it "snapping". I did some research and it sounds just like Hyundai recall #133. This recall involved rusting of the coil spring to 2011 Hyundai Elantras in states that use salt for snow removal, such as minnesota. I live in mn, so I called Hyundai to see if my car was included in the recall. They said it was not. I am wondering if it should have been considering there were known and similar issues with other vehicles of the same year, make, and model in minnesota. It should be noted, my vehicle was originally purchased in another state (I think louisiana or mississippi) and was not brought up to minnesota until 2013. After which I purchased it.

66 Suspension problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/20/2020

When I'm driving and I come to a stop my car would make clanking noises I turn my car off and turn it back on and it would stop. When it was time for an oil change I changed my oil and one night I'm driving home and it makes the clanking noise again along with a burnt smell I pull over turn my car off turn back on it still clanking and has clanked ever since. I towed my car home and haven't driven it again because when inspecting it, we noticed my oil level was perfect but timing chain was extremely loose and metal shavings in my oil.

67 Suspension problem of the 2015 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/06/2020

While driving my 2015 Hyundai Elantra it started making a rattling noise from the area around the engine. This noise eventually grew to a loud knocking noise. The knocking noise continued and I began to feel it vibrating in my steering wheel. I took my car to my local Hyundai dealership in grand junction, CO to have it looked at. The service technician came out and as soon as I described it he said he knew exactly what the problem was because they have been receiving a lot of complaints about it. After turning the vehicle on and inspecting it he assured me that the connection rods and bearings were going out and that I needed to replace my engine that had 50,000 miles on it. I was also given the option to only replace the lower half of my engine for half the price but that price would possibly even out to an entire engine replacement because the cost of labor would go up. I decided to research this issue further and have found that recalls have been issued for several other vehicles with the same engine and issue but my vehicle has yet to be part of the recall. This has been a major inconvenience for my family and I as I have not used this vehicle since may 2020 and have been told by Hyundai that even though this is a common issue there is nothing that can or will do to help me because it has not been recalled for my vehicle.
