3 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2020

Vehicle turned off a few months ago while driving on the highway. Waited a few minutes then turned it back on and nothing. A week ago I get a check engine light with code p0014. The dealer said it was a sensor problem and I bought the pieces and replaced but problem still occurred with the same codes. Now the dealer says it is an engine problem and it might be replaced. After doing some research I have seen that many people have got this code before when their engine on 2011-2012 Sonatas have seized or stopped working. The dealer isn't being compliant in changing or fixing engine. I I believe the engine recall has affected my vehicle and it passed initially but two years later once my car is over the 65k limit now it is becoming a problem.

4 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2018

After I had my engine replaced pursuant to the recall in 2017. Prior to 2017 I never had a problem with my car. Once they put the new engine in my check engine light came on, they replaced 4 different parts at different times and still my check engine light came on. They found that there was a small area in my harness wire that a mouse had damaged. I dropped my car off in October 2018 to have the front and back wire harnesses replaced. Since that time Hyundai cannot get the wire harnesses delivered to fix my car. I have been without my car for five months now and had no idea when they will receive the wire harnesses. I have to drive an elantra without lumbar support for the last five months, which has caused me back pain since I have had 6 back surgeries. Additionally my car has not been able to be registered since 2017 since it will not pass smog with the check engine light on.

5 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2017

I've had consistent problems with my engine. Problems range from the check engine light coming on several times over the past 2 years, twice since 2017 started, 2). I've complained to the dealer about the abnormal amount of engine oil the car uses in less than 20,00 miles. 3). Engine will not start, even when there is no alternator or battery problem. 4). Car doors lock with key fob inside. 5) shaky steering wheel, that I've complained about since I owned the car. 4) seats are suppose to be leather, "leather" is cracking in the front around the base of the seat. (dealers says it's normal wear and tear. I've had leather seats before and none of them cracked).

18 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2011

I drive the Hyundai Sonata hybrid. The first time the problem occurred at approx 9800 miles, I was driving 60 mph on a highway when the vehicle lost battery power and an alarm sounded, and then a signal indicating to "check charging system. " I immediately took the vehicle to my Hyundai dealership where they were aware of the issue, but did not know how to fix it and suggested I just simply turn off and then restart my car. It happened two additional times, one while approaching a stop light, and another time while I was stopped at a stop light. The last time it happened, I could not get my vehicle to reset by restarting once. I had to shut the vehicle off, then attempted several times to restart. The 4th time I tried to start it, I was able to do so sucessfully. I did notice the last time it happened, the engine light remained on even after battery power was restored. I am taking it back to the dealership tomorrow and demanding a solution. This is just too dangerous to lose power in high-speed traffic, and the problem seems to be occuring at all speeds.

19 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2011

Was pulling on to a road and the engine did not engage, the hybrid system",green ready" light began blinking and the yellow sevice " with the wrench " engine light also came on. I could only get it up to 3 to 5 mphs and the echo gage was up to red pegged out,, we pulled out on a county road that has a speed limit of 45 , a van had to stop ,because we pulled out in front of him, I had no doubt the vehicle would go ,but it did not. We had just drove up a hill that always requires engine ,grade steep, stoped and pulled out . Nearly causing an accident. . We pulled off road and tried again driving in electrical only mode light blinking we pulled back over and restarted car and everything was fine. . It s a dangerous problem that needs to be addressed ,when I push the peddle it should go !!!!.

20 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2011

Engine can easily become hydro-locked in heavy rain and road splash back from other vehicles due to the design of the direct air intake of the Sonata hybrid. With its design, it does not have any water baffles to prevent water from entering the air filter and once it enters the air filter box, there are no drain holes for it to drain out. This forces the water through the engine as that is the only way for it to get out of the filter box. When the engine stalled, no electronic control warning lights were illuminated and the car remained in the “ready state. This could lead to damage of the hev system and battery pack. Per the technician servicing the car, they stated that the hev warning light only illuminated when the hev battery reaches 15% charge (the point at which they have to replace it), this contradicts with the owner’s manual as well as counteracts the purpose of a warning lamp. Due to the nature of the design where the computer controls when the engine start/stops, the engine can damage itself before preventative action can be taken. For example, when the engine stalls due to water ingestion through the air filter and the oxygen sensor determines it cannot compensate, the engine will stall, but before the situation can be rectified, the computer attempted to restart the engine causing it to become hydro-locked. With my experience, I am convinced that the design of the car is flawed and is unreliable to drive in a heavy rain scenario which leaves it unusable several times a year. I have owned several hybrids in the past (2001 and 2005 Toyota prius) that I operated through the same conditions as your vehicle and I did not experience any problems with them. Additionally, with the Toyota, when the engine stalls against the computer’s control (e. G. : running out of fuel), the hev and engine warning light both illuminated and the “ready light was DE-illuminated.

Took delivery of a new Sonata limited turbo 2. 0 on the 24th of November. Check engine light appeared same day. Purchasing dealership reset the check engine light, said nothing to worry about. Brand new engine ordered and replaced.

22 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2010

The car randomly stalled at traffic lights for about ten times now throughout my 3. 5 years' ownership. I bought my car in March 2010. Within one month, the engine stalled when braking to a full stop at traffic light. The dealer couldn't reproduce the problem. One month later, my car cut off again while sitting at traffic light. Another one or two months later, it happened the third time. The dealer kept my towed car for two weeks but had no clue. From then on, I just gave up. One day, when it sat at traffic light, the car shook a little like someone hit me. The other day, this hit-like shake happened again while at traffic light. This time, the car even shook several times during driving after leaving that traffic light, with the check engine light blinking in accordance with the shake. On the following day, my car finally stalled again at a traffic light. Except the first one, all other occurrences happened while the car sat at traffic light and I stepped on the brake pedal. After I restarted the car, it could run smoothly for at least one month. Given the occurrence frequency, the chance to reproduce the problem at dealership is almost zero. And they refused to lend me their computer that I could hook up to the car to record driving data. I had also contacted Hyundai customer affairs. All they can do was just send me to the dealer and close the ticket. Recently, the car stalled again during a low-speed driving. The car lost driving power completely with check engine light on. I was completely shocked and hurriedly stepped the brake, switched the gear to park, and restarted the car. Fortunately, no car was around. This is really terrifying and I am really disappointed and embarrassed.
