5 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 02/29/2020

While exiting the freeway, my engine, eps, battery and oil lights all went on and my engine stalled out. This resulted in a tow to an auto repair shop, where I was told there was likely a rod bearing failure in the engine, which requires replacing the engine. After some research, I discovered active Hyundai recall 132 - engine inspection / replacement, which is very similar to what I experienced. This recall is not currently associated with my VIN, however, despite fitting the description and model years affected. Shouldn't I have been issued a recall notice for this?.

6 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2019

Car was going down road when engine stalled and wouldn't turn back on. Seems to be the typical issue that most 2011 Sonatas are having where the engine seized. Dealer diagnosed and confirmed that the engine did seize while driving. This should be a mandatory recall to swap the engine in all of these vehicles. Hyundai should not just be allowed to extend their warranty and hope it doesnt happen to the others.

The next day I took my vehicle to a mechanic who then explained to me I would need an entire new motor. Please keep in mind that I keep up with up the maintenance on my vehicle and I haven't had any other issues until now! I then began to do research on possible recalls and there was a recall in 2015 for my exact car year and model for engine stalling! I need this issue resolved ASAP!.

10 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2018

I have had issue after issue with my 2011 Sonata. In just a year and a half I have had 5 things fixed or replaced 2 of them major. I've had the whole break assembly fixed for my break lights not working. Most recently I had to have the engine replaced due to it seizing up with just barely over 100k miles. Then 3 months after that I'm having issues with the cruise randomly turning off, the break lights not working. Also the gear shifter will not go into gear at times. One of the major issues ive had is the engine randomly stalling or the accelerator nor working at all. The issue ive had with the cruise control will randomly happen whether I'm moving or in park and during this is also effects the stability control as well and it will turn its self off. With the car stalling, it randomly happens whether I'm at a traffic light trying to accelerate or while I'm driving.

11 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2018

Engine stalls at high speeds and slow down dramatically. Have taken to hyudai twice, they say the engine recall has nothing to do with stalling only knocking and they want to charge me $104 diagnostic charge when clearly all the newspaper say that it possibly has debris which can clog fuel lines and cause stalling, they said this in not covered under the warranty or recall. It has happened numerous times in the past three years, but they won't do anything about it. Last time is listed below.

Engine was recalled in 2015, the warranty for the engine recalled was extended to 10 years 120,000 mile warranty. I just recently bought a 2011 Hyundai Sonata turbo 2. 0 with 146,000 miles. After less than a month of my son driving it the engine began stalling out and smelled of smoke. I contacted Hyundai to see if they would perform the inspection and do the repair work they stated they would not since the car exceeded had exceeded the mileage warranty. I am currently having a new engine installed, and would like the NHTSA to investigate and see if I can get a reimbursement for the engine replacement cost.

18 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 04/27/2017

Vehicle in motion on highway headlights, interior dash lights start flickering on and off. Have had to replace driver side headlight twice owning the car just at a year. Vehicle parked at home doors locked neighbors come to tell me in the middle of the night my lights are on. Lights do not have the "auto" option. So the lights were off prior to locking car. The only lights lite at the time of neighbors concern were the yellow hazard lights and tail lights. Unlocking and locking the car seemed to fix the issue. But this isn't the first time happening. Also the in cabin dome light flickers on and off if left on the "door" option. So it has to be left on "off". Seems to be a major electrical issue going on. As there are hundreds of other people complaining of the same exact issue. Moving on to the engine issue. Vehicle in drive at a red light idling the engine will just stall out of nowhere vehicle seems to jerk as if it wants to take off. I find myself applying more pressure to the brake because it scares me. It never shuts off completely however it does this so random that and issue can not be found.

My engine completely stalled at 141k miles. I had the oil changed just 3 weeks prior and was not due for another 1,000 miles however there was little to no oil on the dipstick after the vehicle stalled. Luckily I was only driving about 30 mph when it just stopped and I was able to get off the roadway. I was not notified of the apparent 5 recalls this vehicle has until I researched it myself. Contacted Hyundai and they are towing it in today to see if my motor falls under the guidelines for the recall. The VIN states it is affected but I'm not certain they will make the repairs.

22 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2016

On 8/17/15, my vehicle with 59,792 miles, stalled several times while driving on a highway. I was able to restart the vehicle, but could not drive above 20 mph. This lasted for about 15 miles then my vehicle drove normally. I took my vehicle to my local Hyundai dealership and they couldn't determine what caused this issue. On 9/28/15, my vehicle with 60,256 miles, stalled again while driving almost causing an accident. I couldn't get my vehicle started again and the engine was smoking. I had the car towed to the same local Hyundai dealer. The dealer replaced the engine (re manufactured assy-sub r) under warranty as per NHTSA campaign #v-568, because it was seized. See attached invoice. On 9/12/16, my vehicle with 68,993 miles, failed to start after a 10 mile drive. The starter engaged, but couldn't turn the engine. After several attempts, the engine began smoking and the starter would no longer engage the engine. My vehicle was towed to the same local dealership. I was informed that the starter was bad and it needed replacement. See attached invoice. They also performed recall #132, inspect engine. My complaints about the engine locking up causing the starter to go bad were dismissed by the dealer. On 10/8/16, I performed an oil change on my vehicle with 69,252 miles. This is the second oil change since the re manufactured engine was installed. I have always done my own oil change using mobil 1 oil and usually a closed type drain pan. This time I used an open style drain pan. After performing the oil change, I drained the used oil and discovered numerous pieces of metal in the bottom of the pan. See photo. I took the used oil, drain pan, filter to the same local dealer. The service writer took a report and called me several days later. She said that Hyundai would not replace my engine at this time. Recently, my valves/lifters have started to tick loudly at times.

27 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2015

I have owned this car for 4 1/2 years and it is my everyday vehicle. I entered the vehicle and started it like any other day and proceeded to drive to my destination. As I was traveling, acceleration felt normal. I went through an intersection, making a left hand turn and continuing on. Upon coming to the next intersection, the light turned red so I came to a complete stop. As I did, I looked across the dashboard and noticed suddenly every possible indication signal was lit. As the light turned green I attempted to use the gas pedal to start driving forward only to find that the gas pedal had suddenly gone stiff and it was clear that the engine was off. I was forced to put the car into park, return the key to its starting position and restart the car entirely. I then continued on my way but very cautiously leery after this episode. I continued on for another couple of miles and as I saw traffic ahead of me I began to slowly engage the parking break to start decelerating slowly and all of a sudden the engine stalled and cut off again, this time while the car was still traveling! I desperately used all of my strength to press on the again stiff break pedal while finally thinking to use my other foot to attempt to engage the emergency break as the car was still in motion and cars were coming to a complete stop just ahead of me! Hyundai has stated recently that there is a known recall involving similar malfunctions but tells me that it is not "finalized" and the "vehicle is completely drivable while they work on this" and I was advised I would have to pay out of pocket to even have the inspection done at this time.

Stopped at a red light - middle lane of 3 lanes. When the light turned green I went to accelerate and realized the car had stalled. Car would not restart - repair shop said engine seized - which seems to be a common occurrence. Called one salvage yard that listed 4 in stock - they were all sold. I was stuck in the middle lane of traffic until a police car stopped behind me and turned on his lights. I am not under warranty due to being the 2nd owner (warranty is half - 50,000 miles).
