37 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/06/2025

On [xxx], in washington, d. C. , my 2013 Hyundai Sonata experienced sudden engine failure, leaving the vehicle inoperable. My goodwill repair request was denied within 30 minutes, without a proper inspection of the rod bearings (a known failure point covered under the txxi extended warranty) or the fuel pipe recall—a known issue that could pose a fire hazard. Hyundai cited suspected maintenance neglect, but I have documentation of regular synthetic oil changes. Despite having over 200,000 miles, a firestone inspection from September 2024 confirmed the vehicle was in good condition prior to the failure. Additionally, Hyundai theta ii engines are widely known to suffer from excessive oil consumption, a defect that can lead to premature engine failure even in well-maintained vehicles. Hyundai has replaced engines in vehicles with similar mileage under the same extended warranty, yet in this case, no proper inspection was conducted before denial. Safety concerns: the fuel pipe recall was not inspected, raising concerns about whether unresolved recall defects are leading to engine failures or fire risks. The airbag clock spring, covered under Hyundai’s txxa extended warranty, was not inspected, despite the airbag light being illuminated, potentially affecting airbag deployment in a crash. The vehicle failed without warning lights or error messages, creating an unsafe situation. Hyundai’s failure to inspect recall-related issues before denying repairs could impact other affected vehicles on the road. I request that the NHTSA: ensure Hyundai properly inspects recall-related components before denying repairs. Investigate whether Hyundai is improperly denying warranty and recall-related repairs, even in cases where similar vehicles have received replacements. Determine if the unresolved fuel pipe recall and airbag clock spring defect pose broader safety risks. This issue has been reported to Hyundai corporate, but no proper inspection has been performed. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of informatio.

41 Air Bag problem of the 2014 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/06/2025

Air bag warning has come on due to malfunctioning clockspring. Went to dealership and realized it is not under extended 15 year warranty. Even though, 2011-2013 Sonatas, elantras, and 2011-2014 hybrid Sonatas are covered. Being so close in years this is disappointing to learn that the warranty was cut off, although it obviously seems to be an ongoing problem.

43 Air Bag problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/01/2024

Dashboard has large cracks all over it including where the passenger air bag is located. I am concerned about the pieces of plastic flying if the air bag deploys. Also concerned that the cracks could release the air bag at any time, even during normal driving. Dealer only suggested getting a dashboard cover, but that would negate the purpose of the air bag. My research showed that there are many other cases of the happening with Hyundai Sonata's 2011-2014.

44 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/01/2024

Srs light on. Problem code indicates high resistance on driver's side air bag. Dealer said it was the airbag control module, but refused to give me the actual estimate or anything in writing other than problem description. There was a recall for other 2013 Sonata airbag control modules, mine was not included apparently, but it has the same issue as the recalled ones. Dealer wants $3000 to replace the module.

45 Air Bag problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/17/2024

I got a second opinion from another mechanic and after he reviewed the paperwork from the first mechanic. He searched my VIN number and told me to contact this number because my vehicle is on a recall list. So I need someone to contact me about where and how we can get my vehicle fixed.

49 Air Bag problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/30/2024

2011-2013 Sonata (yf) and airbag control unit (recall campaign 174) I did the recall at sterling mcall in 10/2022 and I had no airbag light before after I did the recall the airbag light came on the dashboard -the dealers scanned the car and it is visible on the baseboard however the dealer is reluctant to repair it and asked 3 weeks of diagnostic and 500 dollars only for diagnostic and nothing about the repair I showed them the recall repair failure is their responsibility and the airbag should be permanently fixed not to be worried about it from time to time the dealer's excuse is that car titles salvage however the car is being serviced at the dealer and is passing state inspection every year. I filed a complaint in bbb nad the dealer failed to respond and sent me a threatening letter for emailing their executive.

50 Air Bag problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/30/2024

Sterling mccall Hyundai at houston 77074 installed an airbag unit as part of a recall last visit. The airbag light came, and I went to the dealership to fix the light, they said they were not responsible, and they wanted a $490 inspection cost plus the repair, and I had to leave the car for 3 weeks. They scanned the car and airbag showed on the dashboard the dealership must install genuine parts that do not require fixing every couple of months, which is their responsibility. I am flagging the belvoir on my recall so far. This is not a good reputation for your company I hope this is done urgently to avoid further issues and we maintain a good relationship rather than fighting.

57 Air Bag problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/06/2024

Airbag clock springs module malfunction disabling emergency deployment of the driver’s side airbag in the event of a collision. My 2012 Hyundai Sonata 2. 0 turbo with 93,336 miles on it, ending seized up going at highway speed causing instant and complete loss of power. Smoke started coming out from under the front engine compartment hood making me think the car was on fire. Trying to get the car manuvered off the highway and over to the right side of the road I was almost involved in a collision with other traffic. I was scared almost to death. Hyundai motor America is now refusing to repair my vehicle even though it is covered under their extend warranty.

58 Air Bag problem of the 2024 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/03/2024

With a front seat passenger, using the autos seat belt, at the height of 5’ 6” and a 145lbs. The airbag off light will come on, indicating the airbag system has been turned off. This is intermittent and at times the issue can be resolved with pulling the vehicle over. Turning the engine off, asking the passenger to step out of the vehicle (at times on the shoulder of a major interstate), closing the front passenger door. To then reopen the car door, set again in the front passenger seat, secure seat belt and the driver starts the car. Sometimes this will cause the light to go off, indicating the airbag system is on. However, this does not always work. During a normal transit the airbag will randomly come on and off.

59 Air Bag problem of the 2017 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/29/2024

I have own my Sonata for 4 years and haven't had any problems mechanical or electrical safety. Due to my car being a Sonata and part of the settlement against them for faulty security alarm system on their cars. I was advised to make an appointment at the nearest dealer so my car alarm system car be upgraded to anti theft logic system as part of the settlement agreement. I haven't had my car stolen but was already worried about them touching my car electrical system. Boy my gut was right. I scheduled an appt to get the upgraded theft system installed and two days later my passenger air bag light came on. I have never seen this light on before so I did my research and found out that this means in a crash whoever is sitting on the passenger side air bags will not deploy. Being a father of three young ladies that drive them to school. I was very concerned so I contacted Hyundai corporation to let them know of my concerns and car situation. I spoke to a case manager ashley was really nice collecting the information and initially understood my concern being that I have had zero issues with the car. Ashley advise I make another appt to have them inspect the system and she would follow up with me. I did so and the tech said it's a faulty error for the safety air bag module that it will not work on the passenger side. I explained that I have had many cars over the years but never have I had a faulty airbag error. So I asked, have anyone else experience this error after getting the anti theft upgrade? he was quite and proceed to then disclose that my car is at 66k and the warranty ended at 60k for my car. I ask him why should I have to pay for something that was working fine up until the anti theft upgrade down by them. No response. Ashley called me and stated that they will not complete the repairs because I have not done my regular car maintenance at this location. I asked what the maintenance for a electrical issue cause after the anti theft upgrade. Hyundai has lost me.

62 Air Bag problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/05/2024

While driving on expressway the red air bag light went on for no apparent reason and will not turn off. I tried to reset by disconnecting the car battery, but it's still on. This happened about 2 months ago. The car has never had a bag actuate I had heard that air bag malfunctions and some emission problems are covered regardless of age or mileage as long as they have not been tampered.

63 Air Bag problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/05/2024

Dashboard cracked passenger seat around airbag word. Before weather got very hot outside was sitting in parking lot engine off, heard a loud noise and was not able to locate anything wrong. Thought it was the windshield that has a small crack in it. Noticed nothing. Several days later saw large lines through windshield around airbag. Looked inside car to see better. Several weeks later saw smaller crack on driver side dash nearest to door area. Did have oil changed on car on 4-19-24. This happened weeks later (the cracks). Did notify repair shop (auto dealer priority) of issue. Next appt was 5-18-24 for new tires to be put on car.

64 Air Bag problem of the 2014 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/01/2024

I am having an issue with the driver's front airbag clock spring assembly in my 2014 Hyundai Sonata. I see that there is a recall on the 2011-2014 elantra vehicles, 2011-2013 Sonata vehicles, and 2011-2014 Sonata hybrid vehicles for up to 15 years, but my 2014 Sonata is having the same issue. My car is not a hybrid, but what do I need to do in order to get this covered? everything that the recall is describing is going on with my vehicle. The airbag light stays on, a non-functional horn, and/or inoperative steering wheel controls, the steering column makes a noise when turned.

65 Air Bag problem of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/01/2024

The air bag sensor located in the front passenger seat does not function. It is available for inspection upon request. Because the sensor doesn't engage, the passenger-side air bag will not deploy in the event of an accident, leaving my passenger at risk of serious injury or death. The Hyundai of cool springs dealership in franklin, TN, has inspected the car and confirmed that the sensor is not functioning. The sensor, if properly working, will show a glowing red light on the dashboard that goes on when a passenger sits in the passenger seat, and goes off after a few seconds. In the case of my car, however, the dashboard light goes on when a passenger sits and stays on (glowing red) the entire time the passenger is seated. This defective dashboard light, according to the Hyundai service technician, indicates that the sensor needs to be replaced. The cost the technician quoted is prohibitive at $3,500.

Intake camshaft, camshaft position actuator circuit and brake booster are the system that failed all in the same week. 67 Air Bag problem of the 2019 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/16/2024

Airbag light came on. Car is in otherwise perfect shape (red flag). Brought to Hyundai dealer. Was told it was a short somewhere on front passenger side. But it will cost $250 to figure out where. Then possibly over $1000 to fix it!! upon researching it I found many complaints on same issue on otherwise normal good condition Sonata’s. Clearly they used inferior components designed to fail. Similar to their stealable cars (with a usb cable) I’m sure you’re fermi liar with. They hid that until tic tok put out videos showing how to. They had to fix it due to owners auto insurance going up (way up). I can’t afford to repair this pressing safety issue. Hyundai should be held responsible for using knowingly faulty parts in their air bag system then charging customer large $ just to make an otherwise perfectly running car safe to operate. Oh, then they said they’d offer me a “loaner” till fixed. But their “loner” costs $50 per day!! that’s a rental not a loaner.

68 Air Bag problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata
