Failure Date: 03/07/2021

A warning keeps happening with no codes it says to check brakes and pull over I can only go about 15 miles an hour and the brakes pedal has a weird grinding noise like it's something to do with the abs system it is very scary and it does it intermittently.

3 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/08/2020

While driving 25 miles on walnut st in rialto CA . All of a sudden my hybrid Hyundai Sonata made a grinding noise and stop responding I avoid hitting a car infront of me and approached the side walk messing up my right front bumper, when I finally stopped I put the car on park and it made a nasty grinding sound. I tried to put the car on d and it wouldn't move I put it on r and nothing. It was a very scarry experience, I want to know if there is anything you can help me with if there is a recall on the transmission because thats what it sounds like. I had it towed to my house because the gears are not workingit . It has 149346 miles.

4 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/09/2017

Every-time I start driving, I can hear a grinding noise so I changed the front breaks and the noise never went away. Then out of know where the back breaks and rotors went out fixed them and noise is still there. I hear a small knocking and squealing and when I stop, I can hear a grinding. I haven't even had the car for a year yet. I can hear it whenever I'm driving.

5 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/15/2017

Rear brake calipers have seized at least 7 times, causing me to need to replace them. I'm at 115,000 miles and have had the left one seize, destroying the rotor and pad 4 times, and the right one seize 3 times (once recurring within 15,000 miles of replacement). The car has been repaired at different shops, but the problem keeps recurring. First time occurred shortly after 30,000 miles. Occurs every 1-2 years since then. Most recent occurrence is now (car is being repaired this morning, left rear caliper/rotor/pad). Noticed massive shimmying this time. Previous times have been noticed from: grinding noise, car won't accelerate over 10 mph (locked in engaged brake mode that time), and severe bucking while being driven.

6 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/31/2016

We bought the car in September 2012. Within days, we started to notice rust spots on the body of the car that appeared to be coming from brake dust. We contacted the dealer and informed them of the issue, and our concern that it would damage the clear coat or paint. Dealer stated they could not do anything. We started to notice brake noise. May 16, 2013; at 6,400 miles, we took the car to the dealer for service, and again complained of grinding noise when braking; dealer inspected brakes and said everything was fine. August 9, 2013; 7,589 miles. Took car in to dealer for service, again complained about brake noise; dealer inspected brakes and said everything was fine. June 16, 2014; 16,176 miles. Took car in to dealer for service, again complained about brakes, dealer inspected brakes and said everything was fine. May 10, 2016; 37,247 miles. Heard severe grinding noise coming from brakes, took to dealer to inspect. I asked a mechanic to ride with me while I drove to make sure they heard the noise, and mechanic did hear it. Dealer kept car for 7 days, inspected brakes, and said could not replicate noise. August 31, 2016, 40,400 miles. Heard severe grinding noise on brakes again, took to dealer, again had dealer rep listen to noise. Dealer inspected the brakes, and stated there was severe wear on the inside brake pads, that had damaged the rotors to the point they had to be replaced. There was no warning that the brake pads were worn prematurely, and the dealer failed to identify the issue with braking system until it was too late, creating a safety hazard. There was a problem with the braking system from the beginning, and we documented it at the dealer, where we had all service done.

7 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/21/2016

The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. After the vehicle was parked, an abnormal odor was present outside the rear driver side of the vehicle. The contact also stated that a grinding noise was heard while the brake pedal was depressed. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the caliper failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred after 7,000 miles. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000. The VIN was not available.

8 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/16/2016

The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 10 mph, the brakes made a grinding noise. The failure was similar to the failure listed in NHTSA campaign number: 13v113000 (exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic). While changing gears, the shift seized and the esc warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The VIN was invalid. The failure mileage was 20,000.

9 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/01/2016

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. While depressing the brake pedal, a grinding noise was heard coming from all four wheels and the stopping distance was extended. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake drums, brake pads, and brake rotors were rusted and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The VIN was invalid. The failure mileage was 22,500.

10 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/17/2015

The front brakes on our Hyundai Sonata failed 9/17/15 forcing my daughter off the road using the emergency brake. This is a result of on-going brake problems dating back to when we purchased this certified pre-owned car 11/25/13. Hyundai refused to cover the repair, so we paid to have brake pads, rotors and calipers replaced. This is the 3rd set of brakes we've paid to replace in less than 12,000 miles. After numerous calls and correspondence with Hyundai consumer affairs explaining this is a life threatening problem caused by defective brake system, they did pay for the calipers but refused to pay for the other components. The front brakes had grinding noise since we bought the car and only lasted 2,743 miles (dealer told us this cpo car had brand new brakes), the second set only lasted 9,856 miles. Since the caliper was replaced 9/21/15, there is no more grinding. It seems clear that the defective caliper caused the pad and rotor failure, but Hyundai denies this. When speaking with Hyundai consumer affairs, they said 1)they had no record of us owning the car, 2) had no recalls for this problem, and 3) we did not purchase an extended warranty (we did). I subsequently found on the hntsb website that there is a recall for the 2011 Hyundai Sonata brakes (attached) involving the brake calipers. Hyundai has been dishonest and deceitful during this ordeal. I would to file an official nhstb complaint against Hyundai to 1) prevent other catastrophic brake failures and potential fatalies, 2) obtain reimbursement from Hyundai for the cost of repairs ($1,085. 68, receipts attached) + inconvenience/time/punitive damages. Attached are copies of correspondence, repair orders, nhtsb recall, etc. Thank you for any help you can provide. Ron corsello 412-427-1113 (mobile).

11 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/06/2015

I¿ve had the breaks grinding noise coming from the front breaks when driving and use braking. It seems that the brake assembly was coming loose and need to get it fixed with a workshop nearby.

12 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2010 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/30/2013

The rear driver side brake was making a grinding noise. Took to the shop and they say the caliper is working uneven and causing the pad to brake down faster than normal, it was on bare medal. Could this be the crossbar recall causing this to get uneven or an unrelated item? the other side still had 40% pad on it. This seems like a problem to me.

13 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2010 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/20/2013

We had to replace the rear brake pads in August 2013 and now in December 2013 having an issue with the rear driver side pad sticking. After hearing the grinding noise again I took it to the repair shop. They are replacing the rotor, pads and calipers for failure to function at a cost of $400. The front pads were still in good condition. These are Hyundai oem brakes. I have been reading numerous complaints about rear brake issues on other 2010 Hyundai vehicles. I have also read that there is a class action law suite in new york over this same issue. I wanted to make a report and possibly find out if there are any plans for an investigation. Hyundai does not seem to have any plans to recall since the issue seems to have existed along time. This is far from normal wear and tear and at the cost of the purposed (by Hyundai service) periodic removal, cleaning, and lubing of the brake pads. This is not normal on any other car and I cannot see this a non issue. That is not to mention the danger of possible brake failure. Is Hyundai waiting for someone to die first?.

14 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2010 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/12/2013

Vehicle started to make a heavy grinding noise from passenger side rear wheel. Closer inspection revealed a fresh gouge in the rotor. Took the car to the dealer where the vehicle was purchased and was informed that this was a normal wear and tear item, and not covered under warranty (even though a "gold" warranty had been purchased with caliper replacement plainly included). This indianapolis dealership wanted to charge $380 to replace the rear brake pads and rotors. An independent repair shop found that the drivers side of the rear had approximately 40% of the life left on the brake pads and only normal wear to the rotor, while the passenger side was worn down to the metal on the pads and had rendered the rotor unserviceable. It was also noted that the wear indicator on the passenger side was broken, and did not give the normal audio warning of excessive wear. When asked why the rear should wear out faster than the front (which is what all local brake shops told me would happen), the Hyundai service manager did not have any reply. It should be noted that there are several instances of similar failures, and even a class action lawsuit filed in new york state for the exact same issue. A sticking brake caliper is suspected, but could not be confirmed. Rear brake pads, rotors, and hardware were replaced at my expense. The brake caliper was cleaned, lubed, and reinstalled. Dealership would not honor any warranty obligation for this defect. Front brakes also showed at least 40% of their life remaining on the pads.

15 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

In April 2013 my rear brakes had to be replaced for inspection. The right rear side was down to nothing, it was rubbing bare metal to bare metal, brakes again rotors. The left side was also more worn than it should have been, but not as bad as the right side. In July 2013 the same issue happened again. The right rear side was rubbing metal to metal, brakes against rotor. The left side was fine. The brakes parts (caliper) were working appropriately. In October 2013 the right rear brakes began squealing and approximately 2 weeks after the squealing began it started making the same grinding noise as it did the previous times and the brakes had to be replaced again. This time, the caliper also had to be replaced. My rear brakes have had to be replaced three times in 8 months.

16 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/09/2013

Grinding noise on rear driver's side brakes--discovered missing bolt on caliper frame, brake pads badly worn. All other brake pads in great shape, showing little wear. Car is driven in rural area, with very little city driving. When I went to Hyundai to buy a new bolt the parts guy said "this happens all the time" I think there must be something wrong here. Also checked on line finding I'm not the only one having brake problems on the rear wheels.

17 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/04/2013

I purchased my 2009 Sonata in March of 2012 at the local Hyundai dealership, with about 44k on it. Everything was checked off and confirmed as in good working order. A history report showed the brakes being replaced last at 41k miles. I took my car in for its 60k checkup and have been told the rear brakes are shot, and everything needs to be replaced. . . Pads, calipers, rotors, etc. It hadn't made a grinding noise or anything at that point, so I decided to take it to a certified mechanic I usually go to. He confirmed everything and said all told the repair is going to cost me roughly $800!!! he also told me it was a big issue they see only on Hyundai's, and that there is no way the rear brakes should ever go before the front brakes need to be replaced because there is so much force that is needed to brake the front of the car compared to the rear. So did research and find out that this is a huge problem with these vehicles. I am not looking forward to replacing my entire rear brake system every 15-20k miles. I will be filing a formal complain with Hyundai as well. . . My hope is if they want to keep their customers, they will do something about this all too common issue!.

18 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/01/2012

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that when driving in rainy weather and applying the brakes, the brake would exhibit a loud, grinding noise. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who test drove the vehicle and was able to recreate the failure. The dealer advised the contact that the noise was normal and that all brakes on new vehicles would exhibit the noise. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 6,500 and the current mileage was 6,560.

19 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/08/2011

I have a 2009 Hyundai Sonata and a grinding noise started coming from the back passenger side while I was driving the car. I took it to the Hyundai dealer and they said my brakes and rotors needed to be replaced. I purchased the car used, a little over a year ago, from the dealer with about 13,000 miles. It now has 37,000 miles, the majority being highway miles. I took my car to another car repair shop because the price I was quoted from the dealer seemed unreasonably high. The place I took my car to told me that while inspecting the car they noticed that the passenger side caliber was stuck and that they were able to unstick it. The mechanic said he would need to replace the passenger side rotor and the brake pads. He said I should think about replacing the calipers. I asked why they would go bad this soon. He said it could be a defect, that there has been a defect reported with the Hyundai santa fe calipers. I asked him if this is something that should be covered under my car warranty. He said I should check with the dealer. From everything I've read on the internet the calipers should not go bad this soon. If they do, they cause the very problems I am having. I contacted the dealer and told him what the other mechanic found in regard to the caliper. He told me there was nothing wrong with the caliper when they looked at it. The funny thing is that the price the dealer quoted me to repair just my brakes and rotors is the same price the other mecanic quoted me to repair the rotor, brakes and calipers. I am having just the brakes and rotors done at this time since according to the dealer there is no problem with the calipers. If they are not telling me the truth, I will be having this brake problem again.

20 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/31/2011

As I was driving in city traffic, I noticed a grinding noise coming from the rear as I applied the brakes. It became worse as I continued to drive and brake, so I parked the car as soon as I could. I brought it into the dealer. They said the rear brake pads were completely worn away. They said I needed new rear brake pads and rotors, because the rotors had become too damaged to use. I had the Hyundai service department replace the rear brake pads and rotors. There was no indication (I. E. A typical "squeal") that would have alerted me to wear on my brake pads. They were simply gone. I have serious concerns about this incident, as brake failure could have occurred had I not stopped driving and gotten my car to the service department as soon as possible. 38,000 miles is far too early for rear brake pads to be completely worn away. I do not know of any other vehicle where the rear brake pads would have completely worn away at such low mileage. I suspect a manufacturing defect has led to premature rear brake wear. This could have led to a serious accident.

21 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/15/2011

The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the brakes would emit a grinding noise whenever they were applied. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on several occasions where the brakes and calipers were replaced; however, the failure continued to occur. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 40,000.

22 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/13/2011

The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while engaging the brakes it produced a grinding noise. A local mechanic inspected the vehicle and determined that the rear brake system was defective. The dealer was contacted and advised the contact to have the failure diagnosed. The manufacturer was contacted and did not offer any assistance since there was no recall for the failure. The failure mileage was 29,000 and the current mileage was 30,000.

23 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/11/2011

Vibration in steering, grinding noise in transaxe, low tire pressure (by dealer), refusal to perform 3,750 mile maintince secdule (dealer refused).

24 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

During braking, brake rotors failed and resulted in difficulty braking. Grinding noise noticed for several days prior. Upon checking about this particular issue with Sonata's online, I determined that there seems to be a prevalent issue with Sonata brake rotors prematurely wearing away. Again, in 9/2011, I noticed the same problem on the same rear rotors, and will have to get this replaced. Initial cost was very high, as the auto shop noted that the rotors and calipers were beyond repair and needed to be replaced.

25 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/06/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Hyundai Sonata. The contact heard a noise at the front end of the vehicle while braking, but thought it would be temporary because the vehicle was new. However on October 6, 2010, he heard a loud metal grinding noise. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired. The manufacturer had not been notified. The failure mileage was approximately 10,000 and the current mileage was approximately 23,000.

26 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/30/2010

The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 35 mph there was a squeaking and grinding noise in the brakes. The pin that controls the brake pads and rotors became worn. The pin also controlled the movement in the brake calipers and when it does not move it deteriorates the calipers and rotors. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that she had to replace the brakes at her expense since they were not covered under the warranty or recall. The manufacturer was not contacted. The VIN was unavailable. The failure and current mileages were 28,000.

27 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/04/2010

While driving down the freeway, car pulled to the left. It is still doing it to this day. Had to take the car back to the dealer after the dealer did a brake job at 77000 miles. Had to argue with the dealership to redo the rotors after paying money for a complete brake job. The dealership finally agreed to redo the job after a long argument. I am still having problems with brakes today. When making a right turn, can hear grinding noises. When backing up and coming to a complete stop, can hear grinding noises. I have had this car in for brake service many times. I hear noises from the back and front suspension that has been going on since 2009. After having the dealership change every gasket in the car because of leakage, I have been hearing tapping noises in the car, reported it to Hyundai motor, but they have ignored this. When I called the dealership after they fixed the gaskets, the gaskets leaked again and they said it was not their problem. This car is junk and it needs to be taken off of the road. Corey and david hagood.

28 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/17/2010

Returned car to dealer 16 months after purchase due to grinding noise from wheels. Brake calipers had locked up, destroying pads and scoring the rotors. Brakes serviced again in 2012 and 2013 for worn pads and grinding noise. Brakes failed again in June 2014 requiring new pads and rotors, front and rear. Returned car to dealer due to a burning smell in December 2014. Found right rear caliper had seized. Replaced caliper and pad. Again burning smell in January 2015. Dealer found left rear caliper had seized. Replaced caliper, pads, and rotor. Contacted Hyundai motor America who states this is normal. Also state that design defects are not covered under Hyundai warranty.

29 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/12/2009

Car had 19,000 miles on it, I bought it new. Grinding noise from rear drivers side wheel took it to dealer and was told that the rear caliper was not releasing which ruined the brake pads and rotor. Told the car was not safe to drive. The rotor, caliper and pads had to be replaced. Dealer covered the cost. Never had brake problems with any other of the other cars I owned. My miles are highway miles and I do not have to use the brakes as often as I would in the city.

30 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/19/2009

I heard high pitched noise from rear while driving 2007 Sonata GLS. I found that the rear wheels were extremely hot. I was afraid the tires will catch fire due to the heat. I took it to the dealer in southfield michigan. The manager said that it would cost me $300 to replace rear pads and they were not covered under warranty. Rear brake pads essentially were 95% worn out. Front brake pads were minimally worn during this time period and were ok. I got them replaced at "napa complete car care center" for $176 in oct 19, 2009 when it had 17,513 miles on it. At 40,042 miles while driving from detroit to milwaukee, I heard dreadful grinding noise. At "car-x auto service" in milwaukee they found the same problem with rear pads while front pads were ok. One rear pad was almost bare and others were more than 95% gone. I spent another $350 and this time the rotors also have to be replaced. There is definitely a design flaw and it is a safety issue due to heat which can cause tire fire. It seems the rear pads stop moving freely after certain pad wear. It could be too much hydraulic oil pressure in the rear brake lines or there is some defects due to abs system. Hyundai must own this problem and fix this issue for good. Environment al (salt, water etc) effect is the same for both front and rear brakes. Front brakes do not need any adjustment or lubrication and they are ok. Why would only rear brakes need cleaning and lubrication at every 5000 miles as suggested by the dealer? in my driving for 40 years I have never seen this issue in any of the other vehicles I drove. On checking internet discussion boards I found that this issue is common and Hyundai is not doing anything. This is not fair at all while consumers are holding the bag with perpetual expensive repairs and fear of being stranded and tire catching fire.

31 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/06/2009

The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 35 mph there was a squeaking and a grinding noise coming from the brakes. The pin that controls the brake pads and rotors was worn. The pin controlled the movement in the brake calipers and when it does not move it deteriorates the calipers and rotors. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that she had to replace the brakes at her expense since they were not covered under the warranty or recall. The manufacturer was not contacted. The VIN was unavailable. The failure and current mileage was 27,000.

32 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/11/2009

I have a Hyundai Sonata 07 which has 27k miles on. Few days ago I heard grinding noise coming from the rear of the vehicle when stopping and when going from a stop. I took the car to the dealership and they said that this is a problem with the Sonatas because of the way the break pads are put in and left with almost no room in the holders (I'm not sure what was the name of the part that holds the pads). I'm about to have the pads replaced and I'll save them for you but I've had other vehicles and never had that problem and nobody I asked had to change their breaks after 27k miles. I believe that this is a safety issue and that is why I'm writhing this complain and it is issue due to either bad parts or bad design.

33 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/31/2009

My 2007 Hyundai Sonata was taken to the dealer due to grinding noise occurring at approximately 25,450 miles. They said I needed a brake job and that the left rear brake was bad and rotor had to be resurfaced. No chirping warning tones had preceded the grinding noise. They refused to cover it, saying it was normal wear. I had a brake check done at my last oil change (the next one was not due for another month time-wise, longer than that mileage-wise) and was told that there was 40-60% of good wear left on all of the pads. I also complained that the steering had been feeling loose for the past few days. They could not find anything wrong with the steering but that still feels loose. And even after the brake job (driver side rear brake was the main culprit), the brakes are not as firm as they were about 8 days before the dealer visit that was scheduled. Their appointment book was full for the four days preceding my appointment. We happened to be talking to a salesman and he mentioned that all of the 2007 Sonatas they had on lease returns had the same brake problem. If you search the internet, you will find many frustrated consumers with the same problem. I believe this is a design flaw or a manufacturing defect. I believe that Hyundai is aware of the issue, but refuses to take responsibility while the consumers are left holding the bag and their cars become unsafe to drive. I did 4 months of researching before I bought this car, and had I known this would be an issue, I would not have purchased it.

34 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/21/2009

The contact owns a 2007 Hyundai Sonata. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact noticed that the rear brakes made a grinding noise whenever they were applied or while the vehicle was in motion. The dealer stated that this was normal wear of the disc pads. The contact was going to have the vehicle repaired by another mechanic, until he conducted research online and found other complaints for this same failure. He will wait to see what will happen with this investigation. The dealer stated that they would call him back with information on the vehicle, but they have not yet returned his call. The failure has been occurring for a while and the brakes have a strange odor. The failure and current mileages were 21,000. Updated 07/28/09 the consumer stted the pads and calipers were replaced and lubricated. Updated 07/30/09.

35 Brake Grinding Noise problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/03/2009

The contact owns a 2007 Hyundai Sonata. While driving at an unknown speed and attempting to make a stop, the contact heard a grinding noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. The stopping distance increased. The contact removed the rear driver's side tire and noticed that the rotors were caked with rust. The rear driver's side brake pads were worn out prematurely. The pads were so corroded that they were grinding into the rotor. The dealer stated that the warranty would not cover the repairs. The manufacturer advised him to take the vehicle to the dealer for diagnostic testing. No repairs have been made. The current and failure mileages were less than 16,000.
