Failure Date: 03/06/2023

The contact owns a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving into the driveway and depressing the brake pedal, the brake pedal went to the floorboard. The failure caused the vehicle to roll to a stop instead of stopping immediately. The brake failure warning light was illuminated. The contact, who is a certified mechanic, inspected the vehicle and found that the rear brake lines and the cross over line was completely rusted and there was a hole from the rust in the lines. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 168,000.

3 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/04/2020

I want to create a safety recall on this vehicle if not other makes and models from this manufacturer. This vehicle is a fire hazard due to chronic corrosion on the fuel lines. It is also a safety hazard due to loss of brakes and steering due to chronic corrosion of the brake and power steering lines. Our 2007 Hyundai Sonata needed power steering fluid and brake fluid on a regular basis. Most recently we lost brakes and had the car inspected. The inspection determined that the power steering lines, brake lines and fuel lines are severely corroded and all leaking. The brake lines had the most severe corrosion but the fuel and power steering had corrosion deep enough to cause a leak. These leaks are not in the vicinity of fittings or connections. The worst leaks are in the vicinity of brackets or line retainers. This car has been sold and operated in the northeast snow belt but the corrosion is worse than most vehicles that are much older with higher mileage. Clearly the lines were made of inferior metal causing the components to fail prematurely. Apparently, instead of using a more costly rust resistant metal the manufacturer relied on a plastic coating on the lines to protect them from the elements. This completely failed as some of the lines are completely corroded along the entire length. The plastic coating likely accelerated the corrosion as it retained corrosive materials in contact with the metal. I contacted the Hyundai dealer and they said that there are no recalls on these components and I would be responsible for all part and labor costs. I opened a case with the manufacturer and they said they would look into it but indicated the car was out of warranty and would not likely pursue a safety recall.

4 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/03/2019

Rear end of vehicle sways around as if driving on ice. Feels exactly like descriptions of issue with recall 13v354000. Hyundai says vehicle is not included in recall. Excessive play in rear end, and very noticeable burning smell coming from rear end after driving. Causing excessive wear of rear brakes and tires. Has caused rear brake hoses to fail. Occasionally brake pedal sinks to floor while driving in stop and go traffic. While traveling at highway speeds, vehicle feels as if a gust of wind could send it off the road. Need to do a ton of steering to keep the car going straight. Front end was aligned 25,000 miles ago.

5 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/01/2018

While coming to a complete stop at a red light, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. Luckily I was very close to home, but I had to depress the brake pedal very early at all remaining stops for the remainder of the trip. Upon further inspection, I discovered the right rear brake line has developed a leak above the suspension sub-frame.

6 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/27/2017

We returned to the chicago airport from a vacation and were going to drive the rest of the way home, 200 miles to green bay. The brake pedal seemed to depress further than normal right away but we figured it was due to the car sitting for a week. We proceeded with our dive but after about 100 miles needed to pull off the road. The brakes were not responding as they should. We put brake fluid in the vehicle but still the brakes were not working correctly. At one point I had depressed the pedal all the way to the floor and the car was still moving. I found a mechanic to take a look at the issue right away and was told the brake lines were rusted through. After getting a loaner to get home, I had to drive back the next day and retrieve my car. This was at a cost of $750. 00. This could have killed my family or someone else had we continued our drive and I would like to see a recall issued. I have reviewed the internet and found this is not the first issue of brakes failing on this vehicle, yet a recall has not been issued for the brake lines. There was no notification or warning light that went on in the car, only the presence of mind that something was wrong. I have the invoice from the repair that specifically states that both brake lines were rusted. I have asked the mechanic if he could salvage the parts for me to keep in case we need them. I have notified Hyundai as well via e-mail.

8 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/09/2016

My 2006 Sonata only has 65,000 miles. But the airbag light always on from this year and brake line was rust. For the airbag, the light in dashboard is on when car starting, and the passanger airbag is off even if someone sitting on passanger seat. For the brake, the front brake line was rusted last year and all the brake oil is totally leak out, so there is no brake when driving it. And the rear brake line is broken this year due to rust. I am in freeway when the rear brake leaks, so image how terriable it is. Never seen this from other 10 year old vehicles.

12 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/16/2013

We had our vehicle warrantied for the rotten frame on our vehicle last year. At that point you would think Hyundai would have warned us that our brake lines were swiss cheese just like our frame, these cars rot out, the entire vehicle is a death trap. The brake lines broke 3 times in the past 6 months after sections were already replaced. These vehicles need all the brake and fuel lines replaced immediately!!! this is not routine maintenance and should be recalled immediately!! the power steering line rotted out 5 years ago, this car was made out of really crappy metal. Dangerous vehicle. Everything on this vehicle is rotted out beyond what is normal, the wheels, the brake drums, everything on these vehicles rot to the point of swiss cheese. After 10 years these vehicles are very unsafe. Our vehicle only has 50,000 miles on it.

13 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/19/2013

On my way to work one morning I noticed that I had next to no pressure in my brakes. When I had my neighbor investigate what was wrong, he noticed that my hard brake lines were so rusted and corroded due to snow/salt/etc, that my brake line nearly crumbled to the touch. I had to replace this brake line for my car to be safe. The person that worked on my car informed me that there is a groove that this line sits in, which caused it to sit with the salt/snow that corroded it. My car is only 7 years old, and I take very good care of it. This is in my opinion a very dangerous.

14 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/30/2013

There are actually 2 issues going on. First off, I purchased the car new in September 2011 (to replace a gm lemon) and ever since I've had the vehicle, it has pulled to the right. Second issue, I left work pulling onto the road, drove a couple of blocks when traffic had stopped at the upcoming light; therefore I had not completely built up speed to the speed limit (40) when I had to stop. I applied the brakes and did not completely stop before hitting the Toyota 4runner in front of me, I felt like I was driving on ice. When I hit the brakes, the car started to stop but the brakes kept going further down to the floor, with no feeling of stopping. The dealership that repaired the vehicle through the insurance company( gm) said they did not find anything wrong with the brakes so I took it took it to my local Hyundai dealer, who did find that my brake lines had air in them. I don't know how since I had never had them worked on and it's a sealed system. After the technician called Hyundai, they assigned a case number. While my car was being repaired, I mentioned that the car pulled to the right so they did an alignment on it, since it was a front end crash. They did notice the pulling but the alignment did not help and thought I may have a bad tire, but with 21,000 miles, would not replace it. I get my tires rotated faithfully and have already been told they are wearing out. This is the first foreign car I've owned and (as prev. Noted) got it to replace a gm lemon, now I don't feel safe driving this car and I have to use it to travel across the state. Between the steering and the brakes, I don't know what to do. Did I get another lemon? since I can't seem to get any satisfaction,I'm contacting you, I'm tired of calling the Hyundai dealer since they say can't do anything. I don't want to get satisfaction, only after my family is writing my obituary. Thank you, susan.

15 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/01/2012

The brake lines from engine to the back of the car need to be replaced because one of the attachments (holding the brake lines in place underneath the car) got rusted and corrosion. Then it caused the brake line to get rusted and brake fluid started to leak pretty bad. Is it normal for the brake lines to get rusted?? should I report to Hyundai? the brake fluid reservoir went empty so quickly and I found the leaking spot. It squirts pretty bad when I apply the brake pedal. The leaking spot is underneath the car where the back seats are located. I need some advise before I start doing something. Thank you.

17 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/01/2004

The contact owns a 2002 Hyundai Sonata lx. The brake line was attached to where it was suppose to be attached and it rubbed against the cv boot, causing the brake line and the cv boot to fail. The contact brought car last October to dealer because the cv boot failed and it was replaced under warranty. Currently, the brake line and the cv boot failed, causing vehicle to hit a garage. The dealership said it looked as if the brake line came loose from where it was suppose to be, and it was not covered under warranty. The consumer had to replaced the brake line with a temporary one in order to take the vehicle to the dealer for repair. The delaer claimed that whoeverr replaced it installed in improperly. The contact felt that this happened because of the brake line was rubbing against the cv boot. She replaced the brake line out of pocket. Her husband felt that this was a design problem. The brake line was securely fastened even after the brake failure. Two boots and one brake line were replaced.
