1 Crankcase (pcv) problem of the 2019 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/10/2025

I am writing to file a formal complaint against Hyundai motor America and the freehold Hyundai dealership located in new jersey, regarding the ongoing engine oil consumption issues in my Hyundai Sonata. I purchased a 2019 Hyundai Sonata and its now 90,000 miles, I began noticing extreme oil loss, far more than a quart per thousand miles, with no visible leaks, no smoke, and no warning lights. I brought the vehicle to freehold Hyundai for an evaluation, and they performed an oil consumption test, confirming the issue. They submitted a goodwill repair request to Hyundai corporate, which was denied solely on the basis that I am the second owner, and the powertrain warranty does not transfer. The dealership offered a $200 pcv valve replacement (a part that costs $6–$20), but even their staff said it likely won’t resolve the issue. Their proposed solution is a full engine replacement costing $8,000 or more, which I cannot afford. I believe this is part of a broader manufacturing defect, and Hyundai should take accountability for the engine failure, especially considering similar complaints from Sonata and elantra owners nationwide. Tsbs (technical service bulletins) have been issued on related issues. A car engine should not fail before 100,000 miles under normal use, regardless of ownership transfer. This issue has been the subject of TSB 20-01-004h, which addresses excessive oil consumption due to piston ring Hyundai’s refusal to provide any real assistance or remedy — and the dismissive conduct by dealership management — has left me feeling discriminated against, frustrated, and financially trapped. I request the bbb’s help in facilitating a fair resolution, either through: a warranty repair or subsidized engine repair coverage under goodwill or defect-related remedy reimbursement or alternative assistance please find all supporting documentation attached, including my Hyundai case number dealer correspondence, and oil test results.

2 Crankcase (pcv) problem of the 2016 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/23/2023

My 2016 Hyundai Sonata started using and leaking oil in August 2023 when it had about 129,000 miles and when you tried to go faster than 55 miles per hr. It would not accelerate. We feel there is a danger to drive it in traffic. We took it to the dealership in pensacola, FL. They found a valve cover gasket had multiple leaks which they replaced. Found a code p1326 (whatever that means), performed t3g campaign and followed a flow chart and bct test passed. Don't know that any of this addressed the fact that the motor won't accelerate. Charged me $3,000 for something. Car ran okay for a while and started doing the same thing again. In June of 2024, took it to local mechanic who ran diagnostics and replaced a coil and plugs which cost another $600. It ran a little better until August 2024 and took it back to local mechanic who did another diagnostic and replaced 4 plugs and pcv valve for another $300. It's now November 2024 and the car won't accelerate over 55 mph and we can't use it to drive to work.

3 Crankcase (pcv) problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/16/2023

My engine was replaced under warranty due to the major theta engine recall, after 20k miles on the new engine its failing too, burning oil, smoking, making loud valve train noise on acceleration, and at time operates very sluggishly and strangely no engine codes ,almost like my engine code system was programmed to ignore these issues. My new replaced engine seems to be failing again and they don't care. I'm afraid this car will catastrophically fail or catch fire like I've been reading about. . Because its past the 12k warranty they are declining to fix,12k warranty really ???!! here's my concern, I am hearing many many ,many stories from others and even the dealer people that Hyundai is replacing the recall engines with bad faulty engines, some I've heard have received 3 engines. My dealer lied to me saying it was a pcv ,the pcv valve was replaced and my engine is still failing like the first engine. Please help, Hyundai is basically getting away with ignoring the recall settlement by replacing the engines with still known faulty engines !.

4 Crankcase (pcv) problem of the 2016 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/26/2021

Problem is the engine is burning two quarts of oil every 1,000 miles. Was taking car in for oil change and check engine light went on. Service person said car was way down on oil which is why engine light went on. Said there was a problem with Hyundai engines and to take it to dealer. Dealer ettleson agent john cunniff confirm that there is a problem with that engine and said they would run an oil test. Oil was changed with new filter and told to come back in 1,000 miles. Returned to dealer after 1,000 miles and engine was down two quarts of oil, dealer topped off oil and said someone would contact me. I called several days later and john cunniff said that using two quarts of oil in 1,000 miles was within specs. He said to contact Hyundai customer service. I did with case # 19220125, and frances was case worker. Attempted to contact frances three times with negative results. I called and spoke with a cindy who stated case notes stated frances contacted ettleson and they said two quarts of in 1,000 miles is normal, complaint was closed. Research disclosed there is a problem with oil consumption in that engine, backed up by their and other mechanics. I have 69,000 miles on the vehicle and a 100,000 mile warranty. I have all maintenance files for the vehicle since I purchased it. I have complied with the dealers instructions and have had my pcv replaced, and just keep adding oil to keep my engine running. Please advise my options.

5 Crankcase (pcv) problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/05/2020

My car stalls all of the sudden out the blue during driving sometimes it kills causing me to almost get hit a couple times because it just goes out during driving. It has a misfire and a strong scent of exhaust coming from the car. I have take it to mike morgan hyuandi in louisiana where the mechanic clearly tells me they feel the misfire and smell the exhaust but no engine lights are on so no codes can be read and they cant do anything. He even told me if I'm driving and the car stalls try to get a video of the rpms of what the car is doing and reading during that time so he can have something to go off of, boy how unsafe was that advice. I have taken this car to gateway as well as a local mechanic all who has put it on the diagnostic machine yet still noone can find the issue because again it has no check engine lights on so what do I do. I dont have money to just buy parts and hope that fixes it. The car drinks oil but there is no visible oil leaks. No droppings in my drive way. Some one told me the pcv valve may needs to be changed but again I dont have money to keep changing out parts hoping thats it. This is a known issue with these cars and I feel hyuandi needs to do something because it's nothing that all consumers are doing wrong the motors are just no good.

At 1st my car my consuming a lot of oil. I was going to get top off at my oil place every week. I tried to take it to my nearby Hyundai, they told me they wanted $350 to do a test. Then my car was not gasing the way it usually did. It was stalling, I had a burning smell coming from my engine. I took it to my mechanic and he replaced the O2 sensor, heating sensor, pcv valve, he did a transmission flush. It started to work ok, and I was driving with my disabled husband and our 4 year old daughter when the car engine went out on us on the highway. We got the car tow to our mechanic and its more problems then solutions . Its now the Cadillac converter, this car is extremely dangerous to drive. I have receipts of the repairs, towing and daily oil inputs.

7 Crankcase (pcv) problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/23/2017

Tl- the contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at 25 mph, the contact heard a knocking noise in the engine that became louder when the contact accelerated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who found that there was no oil in the engine. Oil was added to the engine and the vehicle was taken to colonial Hyundai 4423 Lincoln hwy, downingtown, PA 19335 where it was diagnosed that there had been an unknown failure within the engine, causing the engine to make a tapping noise and lose oil excessively. The vehicle was not repaired and the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to colonial Hyundai where the dealer heard a clicking noise and the pcv valve was replaced. However, the failure recurred again. Colonial Hyundai also stated that a recall would be released and the contact would be provided with a new engine. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number 17v226000 (engine). However, colonial Hyundai stated that the vehicle passed the recall inspection and did not need a new engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the contact should follow up with the dealer. The approximate failure mileage was 114,629. Np.

8 Crankcase (pcv) problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/15/2015

Takata recall notice, steering control box, seat belt tensioer, dip stick, engine metal in crankcase, six recall to date, 12/25/2018, and the safety recalls have not been repaired due to "part not available" per dealer. Note-steering control box is irradical and loose. 130 miles rt to dealer and rental car while waiting ovenight for under carriage coating to cure. This car is a lemon, bought @ hart motors, dalhart, TX, 2015. Dealer put me into wells fargo finance at 8% (credit score 810) other banks charge 4% atm. This veteran got screwed and still paying. Amarillo TX dealer does not have parts to repair safety equipment. How long can this go on? not safe to drive! 100usd/mo insurance wasted but required by dealer. Possible wreck damage indicated by wheel alignment. Et al in motion . Docs available on request.

9 Crankcase (pcv) problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/19/2014

The car was expertly maintained, followed the severe duty maintenance schedule. Never had a problem until 125,000 miles. Metallic debris in the crankcase caused the oil pump not to spray oil onto the connecting rod bearing causing a complete engine failure. This is the same thing that was recently recalled on the newer 2011-up theta ii. The theta I and theta ii are the exact same short blocks except for the theta ii's direct injection system. My mechanic who did the repair was very surprised since he always inspected my car annually and knew I used to be a mechanic and maintained all my cars like clockwork. The repair cost was $4,113. 53, see attached invoice. The existing recall should be for all theta engine since 2006-up not just for the 2011-up.
