7 Frame And Members problem of the 2001 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/10/2012

On 4/10/12 went to get car inspected and it failed was told rear sub frame rotten. Called and talked to Hyundai motor America to see if they could help. We had the sub frame in front replaced by lia Hyundai in Jan 2010 when there was a recall. I don't get why the rear was not recall if that rusted out too. Now I'm looking at $700-$800 to have it fix. I feel that if this is the problem with these cars this should of been replaced when I did the front. I have talked to these people about this and no one seems to call you back with answer when they say they will check into it and will call me back. I called them for 3 days now and it's the same answer. This car is running great except for the subframe. Please if you can help me with this problem. I would like them to at least pay something to help me with this. I work three jobs and can't afford to lose them right now with no car.

12 Frame And Members problem of the 1999 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/04/2010

Vehicle had developed a front end alignment problem, and I scheduled an alignment. The morning before the scheduled alignment, I was pulling out of my driveway to go to work when the right inner cv joint disintegrated. Investigation revealed severe subframe corrosion resulting in the control arm mount separating from the subframe, causing the cv joint to fail and the vehicle to become inoperable. Nhtsa and Hyundai issued a recall in 2009, campaign id number: 09v124000. However, the state I reside in (nebraska) is not listed as a "salt belt" state and is not covered by the recall. Nebraska does indeed use salt on the roads, and the description of the fault and potential results matches exactly with the rust and corrosion on my vehicle's subframe and the results. I believe it likely that there are other motorists in the state of nebraska who are driving these vehicles with this hidden and potentially very dangerous fault. The Hyundai dealer has been unable to help me so far with a fault resolution per the recall.

13 Frame And Members problem of the 1999 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/20/2010

I have a defective subframe on a 1999 Sonata purchased new in iowa and driven there for 4 years. It has completely rusted out on the passenger front side causing steering control arms and drive axle to break loose from vehicle and making vehicle inoperable. This should be covered under Hyundai recall campaign 089. Nhtsa campaign id no. 09v124000. I am getting no response as to if they will cover this damage and replace subframe from the local dealer tamiami Hyundai in naples, FL and have also contacted the Hyundai customer assistance center 3 times to no avail. I was told by a mechanic that if this would have happened at highway speeds I would have probably lost control of vehicle and it would have rolled. Never since I owned the vehicle was told of this recall and they currently state the VIN of the vehicle is not being shown in the recall list, but it was purchased new in iowa so it should be included.

14 Frame And Members problem of the 2000 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/18/2010

2000 Hyundai Sonata, VIN: [xxx]mfg date: 06/18/1999 sub-frame failure. Condition found by tire retailer during installation and alignment. Lower control arm separated from sub-frame. Fortunately, condition found before catastrophic failure occurred while driving. Less than 1 week prior to discovery, experienced drive axle failure. Right drive axle replaced but technician failed to notice or make me aware for separation of sub-frame. This was the apparent cause of the drive axle failure. The sub-frame separation allowed the drive axle to shift and slip from transmission case. Lower connection for control arm separated from sub frame. The condition that occurred is identical to recall on 2001-2004 Hyundai Sonata models and the recall issued for 1999 and 2000 models in the "salt belt" states. We have experienced heavy winter weather here in va over the past 10 years. Large amounts of salt have been used on our roads. The richmond area has exceeded salt use several times since I have owned this vehicle! but salt isn't a requirement for a condition such as this. The build up of water alone will create this condition! rust occurs any time that water with no drainage combines with steel/iron. My vehicle is currently in dealer service having the sub-frame replaced! had I been notified of this potential condition, I would have taken steps to resolve it before it threatened personal injury to me. I can only thank the staff at merchant's tire for finding it before it failed on the road! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

16 Frame And Members problem of the 2000 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/27/2010

I am writing in regard to my 2000 Hyundai Sonata and its sub frame corrosion and the frustration I am feeling from this situation. I was driving to work on Friday August 27th around 520 a. M. And had been on the I-10 freeway about 5 miles going around 65 miles an hour, the road soon has a speed limit of 75 mph its a 25 mile stretch of desert and very heavily traveled by 18 wheelers making the haul to California (los angeles). Anyway, I had just passed a semi and was about to pass another (with one behind me) when I felt something like metal on pavement and thought something was terribly wrong with my front right tire. . . I did all I could to get off the freeway (on the left hand side) the semi behind me almost rear ended me along with several other vehicles on their way to work all I heard was horns, tires squealing, and saw people flipping me off all while I was trying to get off the freeway. I was somehow able to get the car off the road (barely over the yellow line). I tried to look at the front right side but the car was so close to the freeway I would have gotten hit. I didn't know whether to stay in the car or stand outside (if the car would have been hit either way would have been deadly). A police man came by about 10 minutes later and asked if I was okay and had me try to start the car the car would not move as if the gears were gone he used his patrol car to move the car from the roadway and down into the desert median. It was at this point that we took a look and could see that the right front tire was facing out approximately 45 degrees with wheel housing and fender damage. I called a friend, and a tow truck and went to work. The car was taken to a mechanics house and I was told after his inspection that the lower control arm completely separated/detached from the sub frame, with chunks of the frame still attached to the control arm hardware (noticeable severe rust/corrosion) when the lower control arm detached from the sub frame.

22 Frame And Members problem of the 2001 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/22/2010

Noticed an issue in January 2010: took car to a auto-repair shop for repair; new tires and alignment service. On 03/22/2010 while leaving a shopping mall the vehicle lost control and veared a hard left into a cement light pole in the middle of the parking lot. (I was able to apply the brakes in time and turn the vehicle) only damage was to the front driver side bumper and quarter-panel, body damage only. I then tried to drive the vehicle which at that point operated in drivable condition. On my way to the auto-repair (less then 1 mile away) my vehicle completely broke down in the middle of an intersection in another shopping plaza. The car was then towed to the auto-repair shop, which then later called and explained that the frame of the car was cracked and the whieel was detatched. I called the dealership and they took the matter very lightly telling me to just bring the car in (the vehicle was not drivable). I call my towing company and towed the vehicle to the dealership and now awaiting response. I was not offered a loaner, nor did the manager know of any recall, neither did I, something I had to investigate for myself. (luckily I was not on the highway when this happen or I would not be here today.

25 Frame And Members problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/19/2010

I had taken my 2007 Hyundai Sonata to towne Hyundai in denville, NJ. The xm radio mysteriously stopped working one day. Xm corporation had done troubleshooting with the car and determined that the signal was reaching the car and advised me to bring it to Hyundai. Hyundai noted that the top box for the xm radio which is located in a gulley in the trunk behind the rear passenger wheel had rusted and that there was water in my trunk. I was provided with a copy of a technical service bulletin that Hyundai had written noting that "water may enter the trunk through body seams, welds, body plugs" and that any suspect water entry point would need to be sealed to correct further damage from occurring. The xm top box is completely non-functional due to the water damage/excessive rust. Hyundai corporation has thus far refused to cover the defective body seals which is causing further rusting of the body of this vehicle as well as safety concerns if this vehicle were ever in an accident. Hyundai has also refused to cover any replacement costs relating to the xm radio top box. Hyundai has not been proactive in notifying customers of this defect and continually refuses to make good on its 7 year/unlimited mileage anti-perforation warranty for a defect they know exists.

28 Frame And Members problem of the 2002 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/18/2010

On Monday evening 01/18/2010 my wife and I left our home with our 2002 Hyundai Sonata we drove no more then 3 tenths of a mile when the steering wheel starting pulling very hard to the right we then turned around and drove back toward home but only made it about 2 tenths of a mile before the front right wheel collapsed bringing us to a dead stop in the middle of the road. Thankfully we were only going about 20-25 mph the police were called for traffic and the car was towed to r. J shore automotive branford CT 06405 the next morning the owner of r. J. Auto informed me that my front engine sub-frame had failed due to corrosion, and showed me a print-out of a recall from Hyundai dated April 14, 2009 then stated he called the Hyundai dealer in branford CT 06405 but the dealer refused to pick up the car so I had to pay $81. 41 to have the car towed to branford Hyundai. The staff at the Hyundai had no answers and continued to state you will have to call the corporate office, so I did. The employee chris stated that there were 200. 000 vehicles involved in this recall campaign #089 or #09v124000 and we have not mailed out all of the notices (shame on them because it's been almost a year and if we were on the highway we could have died) the employee then called the branford Hyundai and was told that the car would take 1 or 2 weeks to fix and no loaner or rental vehicle will be provided I said that is unacceptable and demanded a loaner still the answer was no but somehow they managed to fix my car on 01/20/2010 when I picked my vehicle up at 420pm on 01/20/2010 my wife and I were not allowed to view what was repaired and was told that they bent over backwards to fix this car quickly because of my call to Hyundai corporate I stated (bent over backwards, someone could have died, from this accident) the manager bob guevera, and a chris vailette then called the police and told us to never come back again, to have the corporate office fix my car next time.

31 Frame And Members problem of the 1999 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

On 1 oct 2009 my son was driving his 1999 Hyundai Sonata GLS from his high school to pick up his sister at the daycare just down the road. Upon pulling into the daycare parking lot he heard a loud sound and the front passenger side of the vehicle dropped significantly. He immediately stopped the vehicle and got out to see if he had hit something or to see exactly what had happened. Upon inspection the front passenger side a-frame had completely rusted out of the sub frame of the vehicle causing it to break completely off. Thankfully he was traveling at a low rate of speed or it could have caused a major accident or even further damage to the vehicle. Upon research it was discovered that there is a NHTSA campaign id number: 09v124000 that addresses this same issue, however it looks like it doesn't cover a recall of the 1999 model and when I contacted the dealership they stated there was no recall for this vehicle. You can contact me at thomas. Keyser@jcse. Mil or at 813-451-6532. I?m highly concerned for the safety for anyone that drives this vehicle and I feel that since this seems to be a systemic issue that it should be covered under the factory recall campaign as this vehicle was originally titled in missouri.
