I have had so much warranty work done to this car, that I will never buy Hyundai again! I would estimate around $10,000. 00 worth or warranty and recall work has been done, not including the other issues that are not under warranty. My airbag pressure is too high so the light is on, on my dash. It's a $300 job and then there is some sensor for the gas that causes the check engine light to stay on. That's another $200 to get fixed. Also the motor in my driver side window is going out. Seems like there's just one problem after another. I'll never will buy Hyundai again and can't wait until I can afford to trade this Sonata in.

The driver airbag sign lit up in dashboard. Took it to the dealer and they said that the buckle sensors had failed. I asked how this happened and they said, "there is nothing you could have done to prevent this" . It happens and you need to change the seat belt buckle assembly. I see a lot of people with 2006 Sonata have this problem.
Airbag sensor under passenger seat is malfunctioning. Airbag will not delpoy in the event of an accident.
The passenger seat bottom airbag sensor has failed. The car has 75,000 miles. No other airbag or seat belt problems. There is a TSB from Hyundai to fix this problem but the cost is $1100. Hyundai will not fix this air bag failure under warranty.

"takata recall"I believe that I owned a defected vehicle. Since day 1 there was one electrical problem after the other. My radio comes on and off by itself, Hyundai fairfax found no problem after three visits, until I just gave up. I replace 7 - 8 blubs in my car, a airbag, and now a socket for my brake light because my came on and off, like other items in my car. It¿s like I have a shortage or electrical problem with my vehicle. After, they replaced the clock sensor in the steering wheel for the airbag, now my passenger door locks and unlock sometimes. Every time I complain to fairfax Hyundai, they deny that anything could be wrong with my vehicle. I understand that Hyundai desire is to meet safety regulation and customer satisfaction by providing good product. Unfortunately, things sometimes happen. It¿s when a corporation takes the complaints seriously and addresses the customer concerns, is what grows a business. I have yet had anyone contact me of my concerns since I had this vehicle, after making many complaints. I will appreciate someone taking this situation and my concerns seriously by contacting me with a resolution.
On my 2006 Sonata the sensor in the drivers side seat belt breaks, turning on air bag notification light. I took the car into crain Hyundai of north little rock and they stated this is a common issue with this model and it wasn't covered under warranty according to the mechanic at crain this will stop the seatbelt from working properly and it will turn off the air bag. This is two major safety violations. 1 seat belt not functioning properly, 2 the air bag is now turned off. This makes the car worthless as far as resale value and a major safety issue.
Airbag sensor light has turned on for no apparent reason.

I have a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. Around 58,000 miles the "passenger air bag" light started to turn off and on randomly. . I took it to the dealer and they couldn't figure it out, saying there are no logs. Shortly after 60,000 miles (warranty expiration) the light started turning on and off more often, on its own, and now in addition the "air bag" light in the dashboard turned on solid. I took it to the dealer, and now they can see the logs (after warranty), they said the air bag sensors in the passenger seat have a short and the cost is $1200 + tax + labor. And failure to fix the problem risks the passenger air bag not activating if there is an accident, god forbids.
2006 Hyundai Sonata has had repeated air bag sensor faults and is currently in the shop for repairs estimated at over 1300. 00. The part number is 88200-0a541-fz0. Hyundai will not cover any portion despite multiple complaints for the same defective component. No airbags will function unless component is replaced. Consumer affairs case #[xxx] . Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
My 2006 Hyundai Sonata airbag sensor for the front passenger seat will not activate if a female adult sits in the seat. The dealer refuses to repair it; various inappropriate responses are given, such as poor posture, inadequate weight or "have the passenger sit in the back. " it has been a problem since I purchased the car new. I have made repeated visits to my dealer, but no solution has been provided. In one case, the dealer held the car for over a week and supposedly sent the seat back to Hyundai, but nothing changed. During my most recent discussion with the dealers service manager, he said that the sensor would only activate if the person in the front passenger seat weighed over 130 pounds. This eliminates me - I weigh 115 pounds - or most of my female friends. My daughter weighs over 130 pounds, but it does not activate for her, either. Most other auto manufacturers have a weight "trigger" of 90 pounds. The dealer said that Hyundai would not or could not set the activation/trigger weight at less than 130 pounds. This means I cannot have most of my guests or relatives in the front passenger seat. This design cheats a large number of adults of airbag protection, and creates an unsafe vehicle. A Hyundai recall falsely claims that Hyundai will address the situation, but this is only for show - no work is done and the company instructs the dealers not to repair the seats. The dealers are instructed to say that failure to activate is not a defect, and that the company considers an activation weight of over 130 pounds to be acceptable. The dealers are also told to test the seat themselves - this means a large male is chosen to sit in the front seat, which then activates.
The contact owns a 2006 Hyundai Sonata GLS. The air bag warning light was illuminated on the instrument control panel, indicating the air bags were inoperative. He took the vehicle to two different dealerships ,whom stated that the pressure plate sensor in the passenger seat failed. The seat was replaced and the sensor was re-coded,but the failure resurfaced four days later. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified, but because the warranty expired no assistance was provided. The current mileage was 79,366. The failure mileage was approximately 79,000.
The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. The air bag warning light was illuminated on the instrument control panel, which indicated that the air bags were inoperative. The manufacturer and the dealer were notified, and the representatives concluded that the failure was a normal characteristic of the vehicle. The failure mileage was 6,000. The consumer stated his wife is 90bls and when she sat in the passenger seat, the air bag light remained on. Sometimes, the light will go off. Updated 10/29/09.

The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Sonata. In November of 2008, the vehicle was repaired according to NHTSA campaign id number 08v161000 (air bags). After a couple of days, the sensor was turning the air bag off whenever an occupant would sit in the passenger seat. The manufacturer could not locate the failure or provide assistance. The contact feels that this is a major safety issue because when his children are seated in the vehicle, the sensor shuts off the air bag. This could be fatal in the event of a crash. The current mileage was 24,000 and the failure mileage was unknown.
Passenger seat air bag sensor does not consistently activate the air bag system when an average size adult sits in the passenger seat.
The contact owns a 2002 Hyundai Sonata. While driving approximately 55 mph on normal road conditions, the air bag warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel unexpectedly. The warning indicator remained lit until the engine was turned off. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic on two separate occasions for identical failures, but there were no resolutions. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure mileage was 51,000 and the current mileage was unavailable. Updated 03/09/09. The consumer also stated the seat belt light illuminated. Updated 03/11/09.
The contact owns a 2007 Hyundai Sonata. The contact received a recall notice for NHTSA campaign id number (air bags). The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the only way they could check for the recall failure would be to check it with the person for whom it failed to deploy. Since the person was unavailable, the dealer would not repair the vehicle. The air bag sensor failure happened on more than one occasion. The failure mileage was 8,097.
My 2008 Hyundai Sonata was affected by the airbag sensor recall. I took it in to the dealership where I bought the car to have it repaired. My car was in the shop for 3 days and it was returned to me but the airbag sensor problem still persisted inconsistently. I am a 120lb adult and the airbag sensor does not recognize me as a passenger when I sit in the seat. I have taken the car back 10+ times trying to get this problem fixed and ultimately they gave me a brand new passenger seat because they could not figure out what was wrong with mine. Unfortunately the problem is still continuing even with this brand new seat. I am scheduled to take the car back in to the shop next week and am hoping they will get to the bottom of this fiasco soon. I have been dealing with this for a month now.
I bought a brand new 2008 Hyundai Sonata in November of 2007. I received a letter in the mail back in early 2008 about the recall on the airbag sensor. I took the car in a number of times and the dealership said there was no issue. I took the car in another time and the dealership saw the defect. What happens is the passenger airbag will come on saying the passenger airbag is off, even if there is an adult over 150lbs sitting in the seat in the up-right position. The dealership sent the seat to some place in California to be fixed and then was returned after three days. I got the car back and I was still having the same issues. I took the car back to the dealership again a number of times to get the issue fixed. I showed them pictures and videos but they told me there was no issue with the airbag. My sales-woman suggested that I file the lemon law on the car. She said that as long as I was still under the warranty that I would be eligible for the lemon law. I called the hotline number she gave me and they said I just missed the deadline by one month. The rep for the lemon law said I had two years plus 60 days to file. My deadline would of been January of 2009. I called the hotline in February of 2009. They referred me to the bbb auto line. The only thing bbb did for me was contact Hyundai to set up an appointment with me for the district parts manager to look at the car. The first appointment was given to me with two days notice. I called the dealership to let them know that I was not able to make the appointment on such short notice. I am a manager of a store and I work 9am-6pm everyday except sundays. I was told that Hyundai would schedule another appointment with me but I have yet to hear from them. I was also told that the district parts manager would not arrive before 9:30am and the dealership closes before I would have a chance to get there in the evenings and they are closed on sundays. I also recently found two more recalls issued for my car for the headlights.
2007 Hyundai Sonata front passenger air bag sensor light fails to shut off when passenger is sitting there. Problem reluctantly resolved and the seat was reportedly replaced. The condition has returned with the new seat. Wife weighs 125 pounds. I have photo's of light on for at least 10 minutes.
Several issues with the vehicle, airbag has had several problems, never deployed when in accident, first issue was covered under warranty, said they had to rewire it, a few months later light come on again. This time they tell me the circuit motherboard has crashed, completely disabling the airbag. Second incident was with alternator, light continued coming on, dealership said nothing was wrong with car. Car eventually broke down in traffic, alternator had went out completely and it was only a few days after the warranty expired. I was forced to come out the pocket, now there are issues with the engine. The shaft position sensor has failed and my car broke down on the interstate. There have been several issues with my car, and I use it for transportation from school and work locally.

The passenger airbag off light remains on even when an adult is seated in the passenger seat. Sometimes the condition can be cleared by restarting the vehicle but other times the condition remains the same. Adjusting the seating position and seat location do not seem to affect the problem at all.
The front passenger airbag light comes on when a passenger who weighs over 115 lbs is seated in the seat. The light states the airbag is off. This is definitely a serious safety issue because if the airbag is off it will not deplore if there is an accident. Therefore with the exception of the seatbelt, there is no other safety feature in case of an accident. The car was purchased under the assumption there were front and side airbags which apparently will not be the case because of some sort of defect in the sensor for the passenger seat. This is intermittent but nonetheless is not a chance I should have to take with my passengers. This needs to be addressed and fixed immediately or my money should be refunded so I can purchase another vehicle with reliable safety features. The fact that this vehicle is rated 5 stars in safety features needs to be reevaluated.
The airbag light does not go off when a lighter weight passenger is in the front passenger seat which we find very unsafe for our passengers. The weight it should register to go off as we understood is a body being over 85 lbs. , but there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when it stays on or goes off to make the passenger safer. Many drivers are light weight as are many passengers and this should be fixed for safety. Occasionally when restarting the car, the light suddenly goes off and sets the airbag ready for use if needed, but it is very annoying to restart your car several times and a waste of gas. After several restarts and hoping, the light sometimes never goes out. This is with the same light weight passenger so it does not make sense. Also the automatic headlights come on much later than dusk and therefore make unsafe driving conditions if the driver thinks they have come on and yet they are delayed much longer than normal. Paying for this feature just to not have them come on in time for dusk makes for buyer dissatisfaction among the feeling of being unsafely driving with out lights at dusk.
The contact owns a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that NHTSA campaign id number 08v161000 (air bags) applied to his vehicle. While driving at an unknown speed, with a 120 lbs. Passenger in the vehicle, the air bag sensor failed to recognize the passenger. The dealer could not duplicate the failure and would not make any repairs. The failure and current mileages were less than 23,000. Updated 11/7/08 updated 11/13/08.
The passenger airbag actuation sensors do not work correctly on our 2006 Hyundai Sonata. My wife can ride on the passenger side and sometimes the dash light shows that the passenger airbag is off and sometimes it shows that it is working. The mechanics claim that my wife does not weigh enough, but she assures them that she is plenty heavy!.
Passenger airbag light stayed on ( I should say was off ) even when daughter who weighs 110lbs sat in the seat. This began at 2,000 miles. Took to dealer they said they did not see a problem and never fixed . . Mileage now 3,200 and still does it at random.
My 2008 Hyundai Sonata passenger air bag system remains off when passenger is in seat. I have taken car to dealer numerous times and Hyundai still has not fixed the problem. I have asked for information showing weight restraints or limits of system with no answers. I feel this is a major safety concern.
I purchased my 2003 Hyundai Sonata in April 2004. Since then I have taken my car into the dealership to have my air bag light turned off a total of 6 times. The dealer stated that connectors pins were not making good contact, he re-positioned it and stated it should be fine. It is a serious problem and needs to be addressed soon.
