There is a recall on 2004 Hyundai Sonata for bad subframes that has been an ongoing issue since at least 2001. The subframes rust and rot out! my 2004 Sonata has only 84k original miles and I recently took the car to a mechanic to replace a control arm and I was told that the repair could not be performed due to a rotted subframe! I called Hyundai motors of America and spoke with consumer affairs. I was told that according to the VIN number on my car that the recall was not on my car! there is a known issue and recall for the very same issue that I am having. How can they tell me that the recall is not applicable ? there probably has been thousands of 2001-2004 Sonata's that have had the subfram replaced under this recall . . I dont understand why Hyundai would not acknowledge the issue and cover it under the recall . . This car has 84660 miles and the car is otherwise mint ! not a speck of rust on the original body!.

As I was driving over 60mph I noticed that my car was pulling in different directions. I made it off the highway and turned a sharp corner and the bolts to the lower control arm appear to have fell out. The driver side lower control arm is dangling. Tow truck is needed.

The rear driver's side wheel struck the inner wheel well and subframe. The contact slowed the vehicle and moved the vehicle onto road shoulder. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The mechanic stated that the upper control arm fractured due to corrosion. The subframe and fuel tank were also corroded. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 112,000.

While changing my oil on the weekend, I noticed severe corrosion failures with the front subframe on the right side of my car. (see attached photos). One area was in front of the lower control arm and another area is behind the control arm. It looks like the subframe will fail at any moment and the control arm would be free to move anywhere. This would significantly affect control of the vehicle and be a serious safety concern. I see this part has already had a recall for 2001 to 2004 Hyundai Sonatas which is the same body and frame style as the 2005 vehicle. Recall #09v124000.

Suspension: I have changed both lower control arms and now my struts and shocks are out I called and have been told my VIN number is not part of the recall but I dont understand how that is when I have a 2004 Sonata and that is the car part of the recall.
While driving at highway speeds on the us 101 northbound into san francisco my 2011 Sonata suddenly began veering out of its lane and was hard to steer or control. I was able to brake and steer just enough to get to the right highway shoulder without hitting anything as there were no cars immediately to my right. I was stuck on a dangerous part of the highway shoulder for an hour waiting to be towed, with the vehicle seeming dangerous to drive to a safer spot. While waiting for a tow on the highway shoulder I was able to look at the rear-left wheel which was inclined into the wheel-well at about 30 degrees on the top side. After getting towed off the highway the tow-truck driver was able to look under the car and noticed that the upper rear control arm of the back left wheel had broken. The back left wheel was loosely moveable using just our hands. This failure could have caused a much more serious accident! I am waiting to get a full inspection report from a mechanic.
On October 18, 2019 my fuel pump broke it happened at a plaza parked and then on February 10, 2019 was involved in a car crash due to a ball joint from the front end passenger side. My ball joint broke and everything else detached it happened on the highway I was with my kids and thank god I didn't crash into a car but it was a very scary traumatic moment for all of us. I keep replacing the inner and outer tie rod, also the ball joint and now it makes sense why, it has to do with the control arm. I'm reporting this now because I looked into the safety recalls today and found so many my vehicle falls under these listings and I never received a letter stating the safety recalls to bring my car to the dealership. I have pictures taken when my car broke down, but don't have it available right now I can provide it afterwards and I had my car towed.

I was pulling into my neighborhood and heard a loud crack, so I pulled over and got out of the car and saw that my driver's side rear tire was slanting inward (see pictures). I had to have my car towed to the dealership. The tow truck driver looked under the car and said that the control arm was cracked and that there was rust/corrosion around that area on the subframe. Now it's at the dealership to be repaired. . . A very costly repair (rear crosslink/subframe). This is a serious safety issue. If I had been driving on a highway/major road and this happened I could have been seriously injured. Luckily it happened in my neighborhood! there should be a recall on this type of issue, especially since there's been a recall before on the rust/suspension problems Hyundai has had.

Rear control arm components are faulty and require $2k in replacing entire control arm component. Hyundai states it is not covered under #113 due to currently not being registered in a "salt state" however recall is exact issue as current issue with my car. Problem was recently identified after multiple trips to the shop to determine issue with the car. Car has issue with control, braking and shaking while in transit as well as a burning smell from the rear end.

Rear control arm support is totally rusted out causing the car to be unstable. This causes any type of driving hard to control. The control arm does not have any upper arm support.
Control arm completely separated/ broke from the subframe. Called Hyundai as mechanic said this should have been included under a recall that came out several years ago for "because of a potential corrosion risk involving the front sub-frame. . . Corrosion may progress and the forward mounting of the lower control arm may detach from the sub-frame. If that happens, the vehicle may lose driver power to the wheels. The front wheel may make contact with the fender or wheel well. " "separation of the forward mounting of the lower control arm may increase the risk of a crash" this is exactly what happened to my 17 year old daughter yesterday and fortunately she did not crash as she was not in a populated area, but it could have been much worse. Why is this particular 2001 Hyundai Sonata not covered under this recall. It needs to be covered and covered ASAP. Please assist. Vehicle is currently at columbia family auto care in jessup MD 301-362-0777.

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, without warning, the passenger's side front upper control arm fractured. There was no injury caused by the failure. The vehicle was towed to the residence of a family member. The vehicle was not repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was contacted or notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 146,200. Ah.
Most of the complaints describe is the exact same thing happening to my vehicle engine repair 2 times . Break lights burned replaced by auto zone lower control arm and tire rod in outer replaced it is so stressful hard to even talk about .
I took my car to my mechanic to change oil on 1/9/2018 and he discovered a big hole (bigger than the fist-size) on the right front of the subframe underneath the car due to rusting and severe corrosion (please see the attached picture for more details). The mechanic told me that this is a serious safety issue, which is not supposed to happen. He strongly recommended me to go to the dealer and have this fixed as soon as possible. Right after that, I called Hyundai customer service and they told me that my car doesn't have a warranty and it is not under recall based on the VIN, so they will not do anything about it. I got the same answer from the dealer at Hyundai davis in NJ. I searched online and found 2 recalls issued by Hyundai for the same problem. One started in 2009 with the NHTSA recall id # 09v124000 (including 1999-2004 Hyundai Sonata) and another one in 2013 with NHTSA campaign # 13v354000 (including 2006-2010 Sonata). However, Hyundai customer services can't provide any explanations why 2005 Sonata is not included in the two recalls. According to the news online, the recall, limited to America's so-called "salt belt" states, is centered around potentially excessive corrosion of the front sub-frame due to winter road salt applications. If unnoticed, the lower control arm may separate from its mount. road salt and water can enter portions of the rear crossmember, leading to corrosion of the crossmember steel. This may lead to detachment of one of the rear control arms. Control arm separation may suddenly change the rear wheel alignment, affecting the handling of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. it is not safe for me to drive the car, however, currently, I still have to drive the car on highway to work on a daily basis since this is the only car I have.
Rear control arm bkoke off causing steering danger.
Was driving a brand new Hyundai Sonata 2018 vehicle for a week with 300 miles on it and was about to exit on a freeway ramp, but suddenly lost control of the steering. The vehicle had to be towed and when the mechanics at the Hyundai dealership took a look at the vehicle, they were unsure of how the lower arm assembly on the front driver's side (front suspension control arm) with the ball and joint connection was disconnected, without having any scuffs/scratches on the arm assembly or front bumper if something were to have been run over, but Hyundai refuses to admit any fault and disregards any possibilities of product issues and puts the blame on driver. The pictures taken show no scratches or scuff marks directly to the control arm, nor the bumper of the vehicle, which denies that a collision could have resulted in the damage, yet Hyundai believes that there was a collision per the driver that caused the damage. This is a serious issue especially since it occurred while the vehicle was in motion. Have been trying to understand how this happened, but Hyundai only provides vague responses to claims and questions and fails to provide any solid explanations regarding the actual issue of the lower control arm assembly and simply dictated the results of their inspection as "no issues with the braking or steering systems" when I specifically had an issue with the lower arm assembly part. Currently have an on-going case with Hyundai consumer affairs (#10727408) with no helpful or accurate explanations or acknowledgment of the safety issue at hand from Hyundai.

The 2004 Hyundai Sonata has a recall for the front sub frame rusting to the point where the front suspension mount rust to the extent that the lower control arm separates from it's mounting bracket which can cause loss of control and possible accident. There is a recall for this for cars that were sold or registered in the salt belt states. Every state in my area are listed except my state of virginia. My cars sub frame completely rusted through to where the lower control arm separated from it's brackets while moving entering an exit onto a major highway i95 causing severe damage which isn't covered. The recall is 09v124000. I believe virginia should be added to this recall due to it being in the same area as the other states with the same weather pattern.
6-22-17 my daughter was return to work in her 2003 Hyundai Sonata, as she was leaving an adjacent parking lot to where she parked, the right front wheel popped loudly, the car lost power she stopped the vehicle going straight at a relative low speed. The car was inoperable so I had it towed to my house. 6-24-17 I begin to inspect what happened, I jacked the rt frt end off the ground and blocked it up. I found the lower control arm was somewhat loose. It was broken loose from the rt side subframe. I came in the house and researched the internet and found this was a problem with Sonata's from 1999-2004 campaign number 09v12400, I contacted Hyundai customer service 6-24-17 around 12:30pm. I gave the car info to the lady and she said only an a-c recall was available for the car. I asked about the recall and gave the number, she said not for my car and that was all they could offer. When the control arm broke loose from subframe it caused the axle to pull out of the differential and that was why it lost power. I also found that the subframe is almost rusted through and weak.

Lower control arm rusted at frame caused front wheel to shift to rear and steering issues. Due to the rust damage this vehicle is no longer safe to operate. The shift in the tire location occurred while accelerating normally from a stop on a village roadway, going straight in traffic. I believe this vehicle was manufactured with substandard steel as Hyundai as since improved the steel used in the manufacturing process on this model. I filed a previous complaint regarding the rear subframe which was replaced on the same vehicle.
The contact's girlfriend's daughter owns a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. While making left and right turns, the vehicle became difficult to maneuver and the abs indicator illuminated. The contact jacked the vehicle up to inspect underneath and noticed corrosion on the rear control arm, which had separated from the vehicle. The contact called tarbox Hyundai (3665 quaker ln, north kingstown, ri 02852, (401) 826-1500) who stated that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 110,000.
I pulled into a parking lot after hearing a loud crack. I got out of the car and saw that my drivers side rear tire was falling off the car. The upper control arm mounting bolt cracked and was broken causing drivers side rear tire coming off of vehicle. This is a serious safety issue. I could have been seriously injured. This should be a recall situation. I have documentation I can fax. . . . It will not download as it is too many pages.
I recently experienced a possible recall event on my 2011 Sonata limited 4cy. The rear upper control arm attachment bolt sheared while at a stop light. I was stationary at a stop light, the light turned green and as soon as I starting moving the bolt sheared and I heard a grinding noise. Luckily, the event didn't happen while driving on the highway at a high speed. I looked up online to see if there has been any recalls and I found campaign tp3 - rear lower control arm replacement. I think the rear upper arm should be included in the campaign as the bolt shear was out of the ordinary and this vehicle has never been in an accident. I still have the rear crossmember that was replaced with the threaded part of the bolt still in it and the sheared bolt.
Rear crossmember heavily rusting, I am told by my mechanic it will lead to control arm failure and loss of control of the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2000 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 5 mph, the front passenger side wheel detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an auto shop where the failure was diagnosed as a control arm failure and rusted subframe. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.

The contact owns a 2002 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 65 mph, the rear passenger side tire buckled and ended up under the vehicle. The upper control arm rusted in half, which caused the vehicle to spin out of control. There was no crash. The vehicle was towed, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 260,000.

While driving on the long island expressway in queens NY, an extremely busy highway, the control alarm on my front right tire completely snapped off. This caused me to lose control of my car and go across 3 lanes on a major highway with cars traveling 70 mph past me. Luckily no cars were hit and luckily myself or nobody was killed. Whats more disturbing instead of the dealership doing it's job to make sure my car is completely functional, they let me leave the lot with an issue they clearly knew about and just didn't say anything to me. After all they provided a complimentary wheel alignment so they clearly were examining my wheels at the time. And up to this point the car had been driving fine, smooth, no issues. I just had an oil change about a month back and nothing was noted to me by the mechanic then. I spoke with the dealership a few months back and they told me there had been a recall on the rear control alarms, which I know are about the same parts as the front control alarms. My car wheel just snapped off and I almost died on a highway as a result of this car. And I have been reading consumer complaints that similar issues have happened and there were possible recalls on the front control alarms to the wheels. This incident occurred on 10/1/16. It has been 10 days and Hyundai corporate has not contacted me. They are trying to avoid being responsible for a clear safety and road hazard with my vehicle. In addition my engine ceased on fathers day 2014 and they repaired the engine. Then in April 2016 I had metal fragments in my engine and they performed a complimentary wheel alignment. 3 months later my control arm is snapping of my front passenger tire.
The contact owns a 2002 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 40 mph, the front driver side lower control arm fractured and damaged the front axle, strut, front fender, and front tire. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The contact sustained injuries to the neck and lower back, but did not require medical attention. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 09v125000 (suspension). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 86,000.
"tanaka recall " this has happened on multiple, intermittent occasions. When decelerating, the steering wheel "sticks" in the straight-ahead position. It becomes very difficult to turn & navigate a highway exit that curves. You have to fight with the wheel and pull hard to make it turn, at which point it feels like the wheel "unlocks" and turns freely again. This is truly a safety concern. I have taken it for service several times , and they did not find anything wrong (now that I see others have had this issue, I plan on scheduling service again). I have had to replace upper control arms on both sides in front due to the squirting sound evertime I go over hole or speed bump and the passenger side is slowly hanging. I too had issues with the esc and jerking and pulling not long after I purchased the car, but those issues weren't addressed or fixed by the mechanic. (after many trips to the shop & several accidents later) my Hyundai Sonata 2007 needs help.
The contact owns a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. While making a left turn at 20 mph, an abnormal sound emitted from the vehicle and the check engine and esc warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the front and rear control arms needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 105,348.
Clunking , trunking and squeaking noise from front side side when going over bumps or turning. Complained to dealer in 2008 and 2011 . They test test drove and said it is normal or can not reproduce the problem. In 2016 they are saying it need replacement of front upper and lower control arms costing around $2000. I see from discussion forums this is a common problem with this vehicle. Dealer and manufacturer may be avoiding to address when vehicle is under warranty.
Rear upper control arms (passenger and driver) had broken during normal driving conditions. The break is where the extensions connect to the bushings. Corrosion seems to be the culprit because the metal had rotted very thin and became perforated.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 20 mph, the rear lower control arm fractured and could be seen hanging from the vehicle. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000.
According to mechanic the upper control arm rear passenger side is rusted and detached.
