44 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 1999 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

1999 Hyundai sonat GLS airbag warning light continues to come on after being worked on by Hyundai dealer 10-15 times. Was worked on without issue while under warranty with no success. Once extended warrenty expired, the dealer then knew that the car needed a new wire harness for about $1000. The service manager then suggested that I hard -wire the wire harness to get around the connector issue. Is there a recourse to an airbag problkem that has been worked on at least a dozen times?.

45 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2003 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/04/2009

The airbag indicator light intermittently comes on, my 2003 Hyundai Sonata with 70k miles. This vehicle has never been in an accident and the seats have not been damaged in any way. The dealership used their scan tool and the code is b1382, the side air bag resistance is too high. The dealership told me that I have to replace the airbag harness (part #917003d010) and this is not covered under my standard warranty. This is a safety issue that the mechanic said is due to insufficient wiring being used in the design of the airbag system. The estimated cost to replace this harness is $1,349 plus the $98 diagnostic fee I had to pay.

46 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2001 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/18/2009

I was driving my 2001 Hyundai Sonata and had an accident. Front end damage estimated at $3500. 00. Airbags did not deploy!! my husband and myself were both injured in the crash. I hit my chest on the steering wheel, hard. My husband hit his head on the rearview mirror and windshield and we both went for medical treatment. We both still have pain. My husband has had a headache since the crash. The car was towed and was totaled out from the damages. I have to now look for another vehicle. I am sure if the airbags went off, we wouldn't have been injured like we did. I do feel that we are entitled to something for our pain and suffering.

47 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/31/2008

I received a recall notice for passenger side air bag activation defect on my Hyundai Sonata 2007. I was advised that if I have this defect I should contact local dealer and make an appointment to get it fixed. I called local Hyundai dealer in burlington vermont and they gave my an appointment for Dec. 31, 2008 at 8:00 am. I brought my car to dealer ship. I was told that they need the proof of I am having this problem of not activating the air bags. They need the person with me to show them that it does not work while person is in the car seat. I told them how come you did not tell me when I made the appointment also there is nothing mentioned about me proving it in the notice for recall. I was told that person with whom I made the appointment was not aware of the policy. I was told that it will take two weeks to fix the problem. I was told to bring the car back on Monday Jan. 5, 2009 and they will work on the car at that time. I told the dealership rep. That I can not keep taking time off from my work to get this safety problem fixed. The dealer rep. Agreed to make arrangement to get the car to dealer ship from my home on Monday Jan. 5, 2009. My concern is many people will just live with defect instead of getting it fixed because of road block from the dealer ship.

48 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/24/2008

There is a recall on my car for the OCS , occupant classification system . Its what tells the car to turn on the passenger side airbag when an adult is in the seat. I took my car into the dealer for repairs like the letter stated and was turned away saying it works fine, even though I had an adult in the seat and the system said the air bag was turned off . After a few calls to Hyundai motor America, the dealer decided to send the passenger seat in for testing . I received my car back from the shop on 10-27-08. The following day my 19 year old was in the seat and the light was illuminated saying "passenger air bag off" I called Hyundai motor America and was told they would rectify the situation. Today is 11-17-08 and I have yet to receive a phone call regarding this matter. The dealership is refusing to help me , stating that " we fixed it once and its not our problem anymore" I am at my wits end as to what to do now . No one seems to want to fix the issue. They simply tell me to deal with it .

51 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/03/2008

Regarding 2007 Hyundai Sonata. The passenger automatic air bag system doesn't work properly. Hyundai calls this system occupant classification system, this system should turn off the passenger side air bag if the passenger is a child and weights less than 110 pounds (per Hyundai hotline). My son is eight years old and 75 pounds in weight. When he sits in the front seat the advance air bag system turns off the air bag about 10% of the time. I went to the dealer for repairs they confirmed my concern but they had my son sit in a 2008 Sonata and it did the same thing. They are saying that this is normal but they have contacted the Hyundai rep.

52 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata

55 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2001 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/15/2008

Family vehicle: 2001 Hyundai Sonata -my wife had called me tues. 15th, Jan. 2008 afternoon, that the airbag light was illuminated on the dash. Assuming a malfunction in the airbag safety system, I told her to drive conservative, until we could have the airbag safety system checked out. Approx. 90 minutes later, she's calling me back, quite a bit shook up, explaining that she was loading some items in the trunk and when she slammed the trunk closed, the front passenger, side impact air bag deployed! according to her, quite an explosion and odor. We're thankful that there were no family member sitting in the seat at the time. I have taken digital photos and notified my car insurance company for documentation purposes. I spoke with the local Hyundai dealer and I confirmed, through the VIN, that this vehicle was brought in for recall/defect air bag warning light service, 7-20-2002. Recall id 01v347000 states that ab warning light could illuminate due to motion of side impact ab wiring harness/connector and that this could prevent deployment of side impact ab's. Well, in this different case, the ab warning light did come on (and is still on), and slamming of the trunk triggered the side impact ab to deploy! so either this is a new safety issue or the Hyundai dealer is negligent and did not address the issue appropriately. Nothing yet has been done to correct the failure. Hyundai dealer is telling me recall remedy is beyond warranty window and I have to burden the cost I feel, from a liability standpoint, Hyundai needs to get this right at their cost for their ill repair or possibly new safety issue to vehicle ab safety equipment . Thank you.

56 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 01/01/2008

Front passenger side airbag remain deactivated (sign shows that), several times, when my wife (120lbs, 5'3) sits on it. Have been to dealership once and they sent the seat to Hyundai service center for rectification, but the problem is still there. 59 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2001 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/22/2006

Hyundai Sonata 2001 side impact air bag deployed without cause. I was waiting at a stop light when air bag deployed airbag deployed while at a stop, therefore did not cause an accident. Damage to drivers side seat, headache, and left shoulder sore for a couple of days. Took car into be inspected by Hyundai. They refused to inspect without a deposit. (which will not be refunded) in my opinion, this is a defect within the car, and no matter how many miles the car has, airbags should not deployed, unless the car is in an accident.

60 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/08/2006

: the contact stated the front left side curtain airbag deployed without warning or cause on 2/22/2004, while driving around a corner at 2 mph. The vehicle was taken to the sales/service dealer, but the service dealer refused to repair or replace the air bag. 61 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/10/2006

My 2007 Hyundai Sonata passenger side airbag sensor does not properly activate the airbag when my girlfriend (5'6", 115 lbs) sits on the seat. Turning on and off the car multiple times will usually make the sensor activate. In the last several months the airbag has been disarming while traveling (hitting bumps especially seems to make the airbag get disarmed). This makes me wonder what would happen to the airbag sensor if I needed to swerve and/or break in an attempt to avoid and accident, and ended up getting into the accident anyhow. It seems likely the passenger side airbag would deactivate under these conditions. Furthermore, the sensor sensitivity appears to vary greatly from one 2007 Sonata to another one. When my Sonata was in the shop for maintenance, I rented another 2007 Sonata (same model and same options), and the passenger side airbag sensed my girlfriend's presence just fine. Hyundai has also been extremely uncooperative. After returning the car multiple times to the authorized dealer, and calling Hyundai USA directly multiple times, I stopped receiving return calls. After threatening legal action via a demand letter, Hyundai is at least talking to me again though they seem to have no capability to fix the problem. After doing some web searches, it is clear that many other folks are having similar problems with Hyundai elantras and Sonatas.

62 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2001 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/31/2006

: the contact stated that the air bag light on the dash illuminated upon adjusting the front passenger seat. A NHTSA recall, # 02v105000 was performed on the vehicle concerning, the air bag; side/window however, the recall did not remedy the problem. The dealership would not offer a second repair without charge under the recall.

63 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/30/2006

My husband and I rented a 2006 Hyundai Sonata v6 from avis car rental in kansas city, missouri while on vacation. While returning to kansas city on I-70, the car in the lane next to us blew a tire, lost control, spun in the road and hit the passenger side of our car with the front of their car, forcing us off the roadway and into the median of the interstate. I was sitting in the front passenger seat and the passenger door struck the side of my torso as it was caving in, injuring my right shoulder and neck. Although Hyundai advertises both side impact and side curtain airbags, neither airbag deployed in this high-speed side-impact crash, resulting in injury to my shoulder. We do not know the repair status of the rental car, but have been informed by avis that they have hired engineers to review the car and determine why the airbags did not deploy.

64 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2003 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/14/2005

68 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2004 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/03/2004

2004 Hyundai Sonata was involved in a severe side impact, struck by a Dodge durango. Impact was centered on the drivers side door and resulted in an approximyate 1 foot of intrusion. Max crush occurred just forward of the b-pillar. B-pillar was pushed into the seat and the leading edge of the door was pushed into the steering wheel. The head/thorax bag located in the drivers seat did not deploy. Nhtsa should inspect this to see why the side air bags did not deploy. This appears to be the type of impact in which the side air bags were designed for. Driver sustained numerous fractures to the pelvic region, a lacerated spleen that resulted in 2 surgeries and almost 2 months of hospitalization, most of it in intensive care as a result of the accident.

69 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 1999 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/11/2004

I received a recall on my 1999 Hyundai Sonata. The air bag light was on. I brought the car into the dealer on August 02 2002. They installed a side air bag wiring harness. Later the light came on again. I brought the car back in April 13 2004, they reset the codes, turned the air bag light off and advised me not to put anything under the seats. On 6/14/2004 the light came back on. I called the office and they told me that they could look at it but it is not under warranty and not under the recall. They told me that I would have to pay to have it fixed. They only fix it once on a recall. If it comes back on again I as a consumer need to pay to fix it. I then called Hyundai. I was concerned with the safety of the vehicle. I was told that the air bags still work and that the light will not affect the operation of the air bags. I have done a little research on this over the years and found that there are many incidents where the front air bags did not deploy . I feel that the air bag problem should be fixed free of charge.

70 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/21/2003

While driving 25 mph the driver's side side impact air bag deployed inadvertently. The consumer had three children in the vehicle, two of which were disabled at the time of the incident. There were no injuries in this incident. The manufacturer and the dealer have been informed of the problem.
