After taking my 2000 Sonata to town fair tires to replace a damaged tire I was told "you have a hole in your frame. . . You should get that looked at" . . . So the following Monday I took it in to my mechanic who told me that townfair tires never should have let me leave the lot. My a-frame had a 6" piece completely rotted and missing, near my front right tire. He said one good pothole and my wheel would have come off. I'm told it will cost $1,000 to fix. And if I decide to do this, I'm out of a car for a week!! and while I wait I'm still out of a car anyway! I'm hearing more and more stories of other Sonata owners having this very same problem. I'm lucky that I wasn't on the highway doing 60mph and had my wheel fall off.

The car (1999 Sonata GLS v6) had a front end alignment done by sears July 6, 2008 at kenosha WI. The failure occurred (July 14, 2008) when the car was being driven into the hospital parking garage (waukegan illinois). The car speed was 5 mph when it made a grinding sound and jolted to a stop. Sparks from under the car were witnessed by security guard who it reported to the driver of car. The car would not start and had to be pushed out of road to prevent blocking traffic. Inspection of the vehicle showed the subframe broke from corrosion causing the engine to drop then breaking the axle shaft. The car would not start and had to towed back to home by aaa. Currently have complaint at Hyundai dealer where car was purchased. Working with Hyundai service manager who states first he has heard of it. The auto technician employed at the shop states is a common item. The car has been in the shop several times for intermittent air bag light that would come on and remain on. The air bag light could not be found what was causing the problem.
I own a 2006 Hyundai Sonata and the sun visor has just about disintegrated. It will not stay up and I have tried velcro, tape, etc. It is dangerous because it just flips down while driving. Many other complaints all over the internet. Dealer say not a recall.

I have a 1999 Hyundai Sonata, and I started to experience a wheel-bearing problem on the passenger side. When I took the car to my mechanic for a wheel bearing I was told that the engine cradle had rusted completely that it collapsed the lower passenger side "a frame. The car is not safe to drive and the dealer want $ 1700 to replace the engine cradle. This is purely unacceptable for 1999 car literally falls apart. The consumers of this brand were shortchanged. A car structural integrity should last longer than 8 years. We need your help to get Hyundai motorcars to issue a recall before serious injuries occur and to compensate those hard working folks that have lost use of their cars.
My 2001 Sonata engine cradle is seriously rusted out on passenger side aft, a hole about the size of a softball. It's a safety issue and a recall should have be issued. I found multiple complaint online for the same auto.
The contact owns a 1999 Hyundai Sonata GLS. While driving between 5-10 mph, the contact heard a clunking noise and the vehicle suddenly stopped. She could not remember if she was accelerating or braking at the time. The engine was still running. Prior to the failure, the vehicle was pulling to the right as if an alignment was needed. The vehicle was towed. The repair shop stated that the frame under the vehicle rotted and caused the axle to slip. The shop repaired the passenger side front frame rail, reassembled the suspension, and reinstalled the axle. The failure mileage was 73,800 and current mileage was 73,900. Cut fingers on sharp chrome lamination on door handles.
The contact owns a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 20 mph, he heard a loud banging noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact stated that the noise was louder while making a turn with a passenger seated in the rear. The dealer inspected the vehicle on two occasions; the first time they were unable to diagnose the failure and the second time the dealer adjusted the rear suspension. The suspension adjustment failed to solve the failure. As of October 9, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. The failure mileage was 12,000 and the current mileage was 16,997. The dealer stated the front right door lock inoperable, passenger seat area makes a rattling sound, right trunk trim vibrates when vehicle in motion and hears knocking sound in the engine. Problems due to rust. Statement from key Hyundai service on 12/11/06 indicates excessive rust caused rear brake pads to stick and wear down prematurely. I had to pay to have them replaced.

The vehicle fails to start intermittently and the turn signals and interior lights on the instrument panel illuminate due to electrical failure. I took my car to my personal mechanic on 3/19/2008 because the car was making a squeaking noise on an irregular basis and it was not steering properly. He took it for a drive w/ myself in the car. It made no noise and it did not "pull". He reassured that everything was ok at that time, however, if it became a problem to let him know. The squeaking returned intermittently. A little over a week later on 3/28/2008, I was driving from my home in scranton, PA to my son's dr's appointment in philadelphia, PA. I was on the PA turnpike for a little over an hour, during which time I noted to my mother (driving with me) that the car was going straight, however the steering wheel was turned left. Upon getting onto the schuylkill expressway I heard a squeal on the tight left turn (a very dangerous, high traffic highway) and stayed on that for approx another 10miles. I turned onto another highway. Immediately after getting off the highway I stopped at the first intersection. After stopping I tried to pull out and there was a loud clunking noise, smoke from under the hood and the car would not move at all. While I was stuck in the middle of a dangerous intersection (the cops even drove right on by), I was frantic considering the fact that if had happened seconds sooner, it would no doubt have been tragic accident involving not only myself, my mother and my eight year old son but also others on the highway. The mechanic, who evaluated the car the previous week, stated that the sub-frame was "rotted and rusted out" which resulted in the axle dropping out of the transmission. He couldn't find used parts. The junk yards said all of the '99 and '00 Sonatas have this problem. This lack of knowledge put my family's safety in grave danger. No there was no crash and no there was no property damage. That was only due to the fortunate timing of this incident. Please contact Hyundai to recall this part no one should be put in this life threatening situation.
