1 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2017 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 11/20/2020

I was driving on a city street. My vehicle started making a loud noise, and in the middle of the intersection that included a freeway exit, I heard a clank and the car would no longer move forward. I checked to make sure I was in gear, but the engine raced, and the car would not move. I was partially in the lane of traffic. This was especially dangerous, as I was in the path of cars coming off the freeway ramp. (having it disengage while driving would be a safety issue anywhere. ) those cars had limited sight distance, and had to swerve to miss my vehicle. I had the car towed to a repair shop. I was initially told that the dual clutch had disengaged and failed while I was driving. During the repair process, the mechanic also found the transmission and flywheel to be damaged or faulty. The mechanic noted that he thought, because of the recent model year, that the dual clutch assembly would be a special order part, but was told that had at least ten in stock because the original part was poorly designed and manufactured. The replacement part had been redesigned.

2 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2017 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 10/20/2020

I have done a significant amount of research and found that the Hyundai Tucson has three potential problems that cause the issues with the stalling/low power on takeoff. I believe that part of it might be the transmission not engaging properly in 1st gear and that should be something they can fix with a computer update. The second from what I've read is that the fuel tank has a material flaking off on the inside of the fuel tank causing the fuel filter to be damaged/clogged. The third and from what I have read, the reason some of the Tucsons fail is a bad crank shaft. My guess is that the bad crank shaft happens over time and that the problems start with the fuel clogs. The fuel system needs to be examined to ensure that the "flaking off" material defect inside the tank is not the cause of the fuel filter being clogged and eventually the car fails. The loss of power is scary and dangerous and must be resolved. Wouldn't it be cheaper if Hyundai replaced all the fuel tanks on the cars with one that doesn't have a defective material coated on the inside of them rather than replace motors and keep doing work on them over and over and over?.

3 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2017 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 01/13/2020

B. The dct transmission completely disengages and there is no power to the vehicle, it just coasts for about 5 seconds and the vehicles slows down. It seems to happen after a turn and at slower speeds around 25 - 35 mph. You push the gas pedal and nothing happens, the engine does not rev and you just coast (and slow down). If this happens when I'm pulling out in traffic making a left it could be deadly. I do not let my 19 year old son drive this vehicle. I promise you there will be accidents due to this defect and I would imagine some people will die because of it. This happens regularly, it is not a one-time incident. I just bought the vehicle a month ago and it's happened 10 to 20 times.

4 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 12/17/2019

On Dec 17, 2019 at the intersection of pineville matthews rd and 485 in pineville n. C. At approx 5:00 pm turning lft on to 485 I was nearly t boned at the intersection due the dual clutch transmission not engaging in 1st gear and then lunging forward when it did. This is the third time this has happened since I have owned the vehicle. The SUV now has 40,000 miles on it. I have taken the car to the dealership each time. Were they will not document what I ask them to document and only record an evasive statement of driving concerns. And tell me in the end we did reset the control module but were not able to replicate your concern. The transmission also shutters at times while in gear. Dealership keffer hyundat matthews n. C.

5 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2017 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 06/01/2019

Taking off from a stop the transmission will not engage and causes the motor to shutter. Then it will go into hit at a high rpm causing you to jump forward at a high rate of speed.

6 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2017 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 05/25/2019

The transmission does not consistently engage particularly from a stopped position. I almost had an accident when coming out of a parking lot onto a 4 lane road, I was turning left. There was plenty of time to make it but the transmission failed to engage. The car rolled out onto the road because I was on a small incline and nearly got hit by traffic as the engine struggled to engage. Hyundai is aware of this problem but according to them that's how the car is supposed to work. It is a potentially dangerous flaw that they are well aware of an no longer use this system in 2019 Tucson. They know it's a flaw and refuse to do anything to assist.

7 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2017 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 09/28/2018

While driving the Hyundai Tucson at times the automatic transmission does not engage to the next gear. We were driving on the freeway and went to make a lane change as a result of the transmission not engaging properly we were almost hit by a big rig. We have taken it to the Hyundai dealer we bought it from but they keep trying to tell us it is the way my son drives. But the problem is that it also happens when my daughter-in-law is driving. My sons drives with two feet and my daugher-in-law drives normally. To give you an example last Friday my daughter-in-law drove me to the doctors. We traveled about 20. 5 miles round trip and in the time the transmission did it nine times. I feel this is a safety hazard. I have complained to the hyundia corp but all they have done so far is to open a case number for my complaint(#11611806).

8 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 06/01/2018

When accelerating I step on the gas and the car barely moves forward and then you can feel the transmission disengage while the rpms continue to rise but at this point you are stuck in the middle of an intersection with no power, im sure you can imagine the safety concerns with this. Then, sometimes 2 seconds, sometimes 5-10 seconds later the transmission engages and the car launches forward due to the high rpms. Im sure this isnt good for the transmission and it is easy to lose control of a car launching in this manner. We have had numerous close calls on the road. There are also times when I step on the gas and the rpms rise but the car does nothing at all. I will put it in park and then drive multiple times and the car still wont move. I have had to turn the car off in the middle of an intersection in order to get the transmission to work properly. When I brought these complaints to Hyundai they said they were aware and told me they had just issued a recall. So I brought my car in to have it fix. I was really excited to finally have what I paid for. Well, I was extremely disappointed when I picked up the car because the recall did absolutely nothing. We are actually experiencing these problems more frequently. Some technicians and Hyundai motors USA tell me that I dont know how to drive a dual clutch transmission and say that I shouldnt expect the car to accelerate when I step on the gas. Let me repeat, I shouldnt expect the car to accelerate when I step on the gas! they also sent me a youtube video to teach me how to drive a dual clutch transmission which I found insulting. I know how to drive a car! other technicians from arapahoe Hyundai admit that there is a major safety issue with this car and they would never put their family in one. The NHTSA needs to investigate this car and take it off the road.

9 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2012 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 05/28/2018

This is a complaint that mimics the current recall 16v628000 from Hyundai on 8/30/2016, for their 2016 Tucson transmission problems of the engine/transmission where it will disengage. When driving and pressing on accelerator the engine revs, but the transmission seems to be in neutral (even though in drive). It has happened to me on my 2012 after I made a gradual right hand turn around a ramp at about 25 mph . I had come out of the turn and tried to accelerate when nothing happened. The engine rev'd to about 4k, I immediately let off gas thinking I had bumped the gear shift into neutral or it had somehow popped out of gear. Nope. Light on dash still said "d" and the gear shifter was in the proper position. I let it coast for awhile and then tried accelerating again. This time it worked fine. I have only had the vehicle for about 2 weeks and did not experience any issues before this. I was a auto/diesel mechanic for over 14 years and was very cognizant of what was happening, not panic stricken. If I get a case number or the like I will continue to follow up with you on the issue. No engine lights came on, engine did not stall, no codes generated on obdii scanner. (2 cycles of on/off before checking for codes when I got home) tried checking the transmission fluid level, but it is a sealed unit with no dip stick.

10 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2017 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 12/05/2017

After a stop, initiating a left or right turn, the vehicle does not accelerate, the tachometer races, but there is no engagement. After a long pause, the transmission engages and the car jerks forward. The problem is intermittent, occurring at least twice a week for more than a year. Hyundai service denied there was a problem on multiple visits before finally admitting the dual clutch was faulty. Clutch replaced, problem persists, and they claim there is nothing further they can do.

11 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2017 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 06/12/2017

The transmission does not engage or delays to engage in low gears. The problem is very prevalent under hot temperatures changes in inlines. Most often the issue occurs off the line and when merging into traffic. . Read more...

12 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 08/17/2016

2016 Hyundai Tucson limited 1. 6t (ultimate pkg) vehicle was purchased brand new may 30 2016. Many times the vehicle has hesitated and/or lurched into gear from a dead stop. The dct transmission hesitates noticeably when accelerating from dead stop. Vehicle had approximately 2,700 miles at the time of the main incident described below (we noticed hesitation in starting from dead stop right from time of purchase and questioned the sales person. He stated that was due the dct and we needed to get used to driving this type of vehicle). The vehicle was on an interstate exit ramp at a complete stop with the drivers foot on the break, when driver took his foot of the break to step on the accelerator the vehicle began to roll back and would not go forward, so the driver stepped harder on the accelerator, when the dct and transmission finally engaged the vehicle lurched sharply forward and the tires screeched loudly. (this basically felt as if the vehicle was preforming a neutral slam). When at a dead stop the dct clutches periodically will not engage the transmission, it's like the car is in neutral and then it will start to move. I have now seen more the 160 similar complaints on the ¿NHTSA¿ web site and many more on other sites when googling 2016 Hyundai Tucson automatic transmission problems.

13 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 08/05/2016

Dct transmission hesitates noticeable when accelerating from dead stop. Car has 13,000 miles, purchased new my me. I am retired and only driver. Dct clutches disengage periodically when at a dead stop will not engage again once brake is released and start accelerating, like car is in neutral. You have to set and wait and push accelerator up to 3,000 rpm then let off sometime-clutches engage and it jumps forward and you have to hit brake quickly or will have an accident. This happens periodically but not routinely enough for dealer to reproduce. It has almost jumped into oncoming traffic with me several times. Damn scary to drive.

14 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 08/03/2016

Purchased this vehicle 2 months ago and on 3 occasions within the last week when I have been at a complete stop, I step on the gas but the transmission does not engage, the vehicle rolls back and the rpm's just rev up. Took the vehicle to the dealership was told there is no known issue with the power train other than a software update. Was told our vehicle was already updated and not needed. Explained what was occurring and was told this was normal due to the eco dual clutch system. I told the service person that the engine reving but rolling backwards is not normal and I was afraid to drive it. Left the dealership and within 2 blocks it happened again at an intersection where I could have been hit! what will it take for Hyundai to fix or even acknowledge this problem. Each time this occurred I was driving on a city street (not freeway, too afraid to drive on the freeway with this issue). Vehicle has always been sluggish when accelerating but this new issue of not engaging and rolling backwards is just the last few days.

15 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 07/28/2016

Vehicle will hesitate when pulling into traffic. Transmission will engage and disengage periodically own its own and rpm"s will rev. After hesitation car will surge forward and jerk your neck. I have had too many close calls to drive this car anymore. The problems happen randomly. Has been back to the dealer 3 times for this. Now they say they cannot reproduce the problem. Somebody is going to get killed in this car if driven because you never know when it is going to happen. I have now seen many complaints about the same problem online. These problems occur when motion on all streets and highway. It does not make any difference if the vehicle is in normal, eco or sport mode. Every time the dealer has it it seems to fix it temporally but then the problem seems to re-accrue. I can not imagine what is going to happen when the roads get bad in the winter.

16 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 07/25/2016

10. 10. 15 I purchased a new 2016 Hyundai Tucson limited fwd 1. 6l turbo dtc. I noticed the hesitation and lag issues with the transmission as documented in similar complaints; however, when these issues where mentioned to the dealership they were dismissed as being normal for this type of transmission. I have made 3 trips to the dealership; although, I continued to experiencing the same issues with the transmission, I was never informed of any transmission issues or that Hyundai had issued a fix in December 2015 to address the hesitation issues in the transmission. 07. 25. 16 my mom was driving my vehichle and was left stranded in the chic-fil-a drive thru because the transmission failed to engage. My mom was in drive with her foot on the brake, but when she removed her foot from the brake to move up in line the vehicle did not move, even with excessive acceleration. The vehicle was placed in neutral, reverse, and drive again and failed to move in any gear. The vehicle had to be pushed out of line into a parking spot. 07. 27. 16 the dealership advised my vehichle was ready to pick up. When asked, they stated there was "no" issue with the transmission as they could not duplicate the issue. They had no idea why my vehichle had become stranded, but it was ready for me to pick up. After refusing to take back and drive a vehichle in this unsafe condition, they offered to have a technician drive it around for a few days to see if he could duplicate the issue. 08. 11. 16 dealership left a voicemail stating Hyundai issued a recall to repair the issue with the transmission failing to "pull", advised my vehicle had been fixed per this recall, and the issue would not happen again. My concern now is whether this issue has been truly fixed once I pick up my vehichle from the dealership and if driving it like this has caused damage to the transmission or engine.

17 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 07/23/2016

Intermittent issues with transmission. We receive messages stating the transmission is overheated. We have also experienced high rpms with no forward or reverse motion when in drive and reverse. The transmission will not engage and move the vehicle. This has happened on inclines and within stop and go traffic. This is a safety concern because we can't depend on forward or reverse motion when in drive and reverse.

18 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 07/22/2016

After coming to full stop and subsequently trying to proceed the dual clutch does not engage. This can result in possible accidents including caught in intersection turning left or being rear-ended.

19 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 07/02/2016

Intermittent issue with transmission failing to engage 1st gear from a stop. Engine revs but no power goes to the wheels. Happened three times in the last two weeks on a vehicle with 2500 miles. Restarting the vehicle resolved the issue once but not on the other occasions.

20 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

Transmission fails to engage. It happened the first time right in the morning from my driveway. Put the car in drive and car was inching forward while giving it plenty of gas/rpms. Car finally went into gear and started to move and was driving normal for the rest of the day. Thought nothing of it since it only happened once. Then about 3 weeks later, stopped at red light, once it turned green I stepped on the gas and the same thing, inching forward, high rpms, finally took gear after about 30 seconds and many upset people behind me. This bring me to yesterday, stopped at a stop sign to cross a busy non-stopping cross traffic, waiting to cross the street, found an opening and stepped on the gas expecting the car to make it through the intersection. I had plenty of time to move through, but suddenly my car just decided to not move while stuck right in the middle of the street. Oncoming car had to swerve and nearly hit my hood. Finally car started to move to barely make it out of the way for the 2nd oncoming car, scary stuff. Took it to the dealership for service and told them about my 2 incidents and was told this was "normal for the turbo". Also, I noticed that when I drive up an incline (say a parking garage) when I get to the top and level out, my car gets a huge rush of rpms and im not even stepping on the gas. Not sure if this is at all related, but just assuming that it is part of the bigger problem with the transmission. Car is 2016 Tucson, limited, ultimate package, awd I don't feel safe in this car at all. I hope there is a fix for this soon.

21 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 06/22/2016

2016 tuscon limited. . Same issue as indicated here with disengaged dct transmission after being stopped, or very slow speeds. At 3500 miles mine started with a vibration at 1-2 mph, dealer noted the issue but had no fix. Engineer was sent to review. Now at 6000 miles my transmission started to disengage at random times. I contacted Hyundai consumer affairs and a case was open. My business partner also purchased one on the same weekend as I did, and some friends did also a few months later. All 3 of the cars are at the dealership. Unsafe to drive. This is my wife's car and I will not let her drive it. I have requested a buyback. If I do not get this to happen soon, I will seek lemon law or open up a class action. Very unsafe and only a matter of time someone is killed or seriously injured on a left turn intersection.

22 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 06/21/2016

Transmission fails to properly engage causing rollback, stalling, or severe loss of power in situations such at a stop light, stop sign, hill, and even turning left into oncoming traffic where power is needed to safely cross the intersection. One instance involved acceleration onto the interstate while trying to merge and the transmission acted like it was in neutral causing no acceleration. Other vehicles honked and swerved to avoid and luckily did not cause an accident. Another instance involved turning left at an intersection where there was sufficient time to turn but due to the transmission behaving as though it was in neutral again, there was nearly a collision causing a lot of anxiety to further drive the vehicle. These are just two instances out of the many where you can notice that the transmission does not behave normally causing irregular shifting, unexpected power surges, and stalls that have nearly caused accidents.

23 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 06/19/2016

Issue with the new 7 speed dct. Transmission revved and would not engage after driving 60 miles on highway, some stop-and-go traffic, in 101 degree heat and sitting for 45 minutes. In order for me to get it to engage, I went into manual mode, noticed it was in 2nd gear from start, downshifted to 1st gear, and was able to work thru the gears to get it going and eventually put it back into automatic.

24 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 06/04/2016

When stopped and hitting the gas pedal there have been occasions that the transmission will not engage and the vehicle will rev the engine as if in neutral. This has happened twice, once going uphill and I had to wave gars behind me to pass. 1. 6t engine with the dct. The dealer says that this is the vehicle's way of not hurting the transmission. However it doesnt seem to me, an average driver who has owned many cars as if this would be safe or normal for anything moving on a road.

25 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 06/01/2016

Vehicle stalls and develops a "no go" situation. The engine revs, but transmission will not engage. It mostly occurs while pulling away from a stop sign, or at very slow speeds. It also has a vibration, and jerks and bucks at low speeds, such as while you are driving through a parking lot. I have been stuck in the middle of intersections with oncoming traffic many times. It is a very unsafe and dangerous condition. Both the dealership and Hyundai continue to ignore the problem. I continue to seek a resolution through Hyundai.

26 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 05/26/2016

I am the owner of a 2016 Hyundai Tucson which I purchased this fall and have approximately 25,000 miles on it. I am reporting the same problem that over 50 others have on this site. It is a 1. 6 liter turbo with the dcvt transmission. Starting about 5 weeks ago I have been having a problem with the transmission not engaging. When it started, I was stopped in traffic at a light and I was in drive with no special mode. I took my foot off the brake and the vehicle being on a slight incline started to roll backwards. I had to rev the rpms up what looked like to be over 3000 to get the car to go forward. I took it to the dealer where I purchased, sheehy Hyundai in waldorf, MD and they checked it over and said they could not find anything. Has happened 4 additional times. This is a bad situation, about two weeks ago I was leaving a gas station, idling out to a side road that had a slight incline, and again I took my foot off the brake while waiting at the intersection, and again instead of going forward, the vehicle rolled backward and this time I stopped the vehicle, putting it in park, and shut it off hoping it was just something electronic. I restarted and had to again rev the rpms way up so to avoid over revving and having the vehicle jump, I put it into 1st gear manually and was able to move forward, but I noticed it was jerky starting out. About an hour later during continuous driving with some stop starts, I was at a light which had turned red and was waiting for it to change. When it did and I started to go, with the vehicle in drive it again would not go. I again had to rev it up significantly to get it to start rolling forward. I again took it to sheehy and they had it for three days. They said they went though it diagnostically as much as they could and checked the fluid, but still could not find anything wrong. On Tuesday I was coming .

27 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 04/26/2016

After stopping at a stop sign, the transmission did not engage. The gears were grinding and eventually they snapped into position causing the vehicle to lunge forward. On another occasion, I was slowing down approaching a traffic circle, as I tried to enter the circle the transmission did not engage. Fortunately I had enough momentum to pull to the side to avoid being hit by on coming traffic. The final incident I had before bringing the car in for service (which is another story) involved an attempt to enter a highway after slowing down, where once again the transmission did not engage. Once again I was able to pull to the side to avoid a collision. This is definitely in my mind a major safety concern and I am not the only one to have this issue. My car has now been at the Hyundai dealer for 60 days "waiting" for a transmission to arrive with no arrival date available or eta of completion in the foreseeable future.

28 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2016 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 04/20/2016

Problem concerns the 7-speed dual clutch transmission. Clutch plates in the transmission may not engage in drive or any forward gears after stopping at an intersection, toll booth, etc. When you apply power to move forward the clutch plates inside the transmission will not engage. Even putting the vehicle in 1st (vs drive) does nothing. The only gear that works when this happens is reverse. You'll have to back your way out of the intersection to the side of the road. Very dangerous! be careful of rear-end collisions or being side-swiped as folks try to get around you. Turn the vehicle off and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Restart the vehicle and put transmission in drive. Gradually increase rpm to about 4,000, transmission will start to engage. Crawl from the shoulder to a place of safety. Turn the vehicle off and let it sit for another 10 minutes or longer (if possible). Make sure all systems are off, even interior lights (very important). Essentially, the computer that controls the transmission must have time to reset completely. Restart the vehicle and transmission will probably engage normally. Have taken vehicle to dealer for service multiple times, they tell me they simply can't fix it, there's something wrong with how the transmission was designed. Dealer has tried to reset and relearned transmission computer but problem continues. . Read more...

29 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2010 Hyundai Tucson

Failure Date: 03/03/2016

When traveling at about 35-40 mph, the vehicle sometimes does not engage when trying to automatically shift to the next gear. This causes the driver to lose all acceleration and essentially puts the vehicle into a coast. Tapping on the accelerator does nothing to engage the transmission again. However, after a few seconds or more, the transmission will finally engage. If you happen to have the accelerator pressed this will lurch the vehicle forward. If you happen to be behind another vehicle this could potential cause an accident by ramming the vehicle in front of you. There have been a couple of ¿close calls¿. I have videos of the engine revving that I can supply, but the file sizes are too large to upload. This has been occurring since I purchased the vehicle new. They replaced the transmission at 5000 miles for a similar situation. The problem occurrence diminished, but over the years the problem has been happening more frequently. I have always reported this to the dealer when taking it in for service. The dealer has been unable to replicate the situation or offer any solution. They have been supplied with the videos. The exact cause of this is currently unknown.
