Service shifter message has been appearing and at times, all lights on prnd lighting up. The vehicle transmission may still engage or may not. Recent occurrence on 07/13/2013, vehicle took 20 minutes before transmission engaged. Fortunately, I was parked at work, going home. If this occurred on the road, has potential of wreck happening. Jeep dealership leaning towards voltage error, cleaned battery terminals, test drove, could not replicate error. Did not drive until 07/17/2023, service shifter message came back without all prnd lights coming on.
While driving the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly stops running without any warning. Engine stops. Car just coasts. Prndl indicator (d for drive) on instrument cluster flashes instead of a constant d. Then some sort of messages comes up similar to "shift to neutral to start engine". Car will not restart. Car coasts to stop without power and no power steering. Then I need to turn ignition off. I will then cycle locks (locked then unlocked). Then turn on ignition. From here the car attempts to start but it is not an immediate start up like normal. The gauge needles (speedometer and tachometer) both go all the way to the right while the car attempts to restart but this startup takes about 10+ seconds of attempted cranking to finally restart. This is a long clicking sound before restart. This has happened 3-4 times now in the 30 days. Most recently on a main road where I had to coast without power and power steering to the shoulder. I have not yet been to the dealer. Car is out of warranty.
My service shifter light came on and all the lights on the shifter console came on (prnd21). At first, I could turn the car off to reset it. This was dangerous because I had to pull over wherever I was. As time has gone on it pretty much stays on. My car has 33000 miles on it but is past the 3-year mark. I took it to the dealership and they told me the previous years had this problem but was recalled. It cost me $500. 00 to replace a plastic bezel. I have saved all dealership repair paperwork. The dealership confirmed this is a very common problem.

There are many complaints about this and when you take it in to the dealer they charge $180 to diagnose and then say that it is not the engine so it is not covered under warranty. I have looked online and thousands of people are having the same issue. This needs to be resolved. I am scared to drive my car but don't have $180 every time this light comes on and I'm not knowing what gear I'm in because all of them are highlighted. This has occurred when I was driving on the highway, turning down the street and also while sitting at a stop light.

Car continued to drive normally, so I continued home, and shut off car. After a short time, restarted car, and fault had cleared. With a little research, I have found many complaints from other Jeep Cherokee owners with this same issue, and it is an expensive fix. The car is just past the 360000 mile warranty limit by 70 miles! I am actually surprised I made it that many miles, before this occurred. I will be taking the car in on Monday, but for some reason, I am not hopeful, based on other owner experiences.
Very frequently while driving the �service shifter� light will come on and all of the lights on the prndl will be solid red, which does not allow the operator to be able to safely shift from drive to park etc. The service shifter light appears on the drive control screen and is unable to be cleared. I have also noticed the engine occasionally lurching when accelerating from a stop when the service shifter light is on. At first the �service shifter� light would only come on occasionally, maybe every month or so, but now it comes only 80% of the time I drive it. It is completely random when it will appear, it happens while driving down the highway after 2 hours of driving. It happens while making my 5 minute commute to work, sometimes it appears as soon as I turn on my car. The only way to clear the message is to pull over and turn the car off and then back on, and this is not always effective.

Just bought a used 2017 Jeep Cherokee trailhawk 36867 miles and the service shifter light has come up on the dashboard while driving down the highway and all lights next to prnd turned red. Pulled over and stopped turned off engine, put in park and the vehicle started rolling. Turned engine on/off twice then got it into park then back into drive. Made it home and vehicle still has all lights next to prnd on and service shifter message remains.

The vehicle was taken to leith Chrysler Jeep (5500 capital blvd, raleigh, nc 27616, 919-872-5500) where the technician updated the computer system, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the same dealer where it was diagnosed that the gear selector bezel and harness needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures and stated that they would contact the dealer. The contact also stated that the manufacturer promised to get back with her within twenty-four hours. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 3,000.
