Transmission Gear Indicator problems of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Our service shifter light started coming on periodically at around 20k miles. It has happened no less that 10 times now. This is problematic since it will happen while driving and the powertrain will shift into neutral causing the driver to have to pull over while in traffic. I talked to the Jeep dealer who said this is out of the bumper to bumper 3 year/36k warranty and not covered by the powertrain warranty. Upon starting Jeep received message "service shifter" and all the gear indicator lights are lit and message center is inoperative except for that message. Shutting car off and restarting resets, only to come back after a few starts. Jeep dealership charges $145 to tell you what needs to be replaced but is not sure if that will fix problem. Multiple complaints regarding this issue with 2016-2018 Jeep Cherokee's but car is past 36 month warranty period even though it only has 14,500 miles on it, Jeep will not repair at n/c. With the amount of complaints I have read for same issue, why isn't a recall in order ? apparently, if you don't get it fixed, somewhere down the road, the vehicle may become inoperable, or will not shift to park. The temporary fix appears to be , shut the car off, and restart. Not a very good thing.

The notice for service shifter come's on, all the lights on the gear selector light up. You can't tell which gear the car is in. This notice shows in the instrument cluster, where the speed odometer is. This has happened on and off for 6 to 8 months, the dealership found nothing. This happens while driving and just starting the vehicle.

When I start my car the display on the dashboard shows 'service shifter' and all the gear name lights on the shifter light up red. The notification on the display will not go away and the lights will not turn off until the engine is turned off. This happens if the vehicle is stationary when the engine is turned on and sometimes will happen randomly whole the vehicle is in motion. Often this will happen as I am in the process of braking to park and turn the vehicle off. This happens at various speeds, but most often at lower level speeds in residential areas.

I was simply driving down the road at aprox 30 mph. I heard a ding looked at my dash and service shifter soon notice was on my dash. Looked down at gear shift all lights where red p r n d +. . I pulled over left the vehicle running and shifted it to park. All lights and the service shifter soon notice remained. I turned off vehicle for 5-10 minutes. Started again and warning message was gone. Lights on gear shift returned to normal only lighting up the gear the vehcle was actually in. There was no warning prior to this occurrence. Vehicle made no unusual sounds, no shifting funny, no issues going into gear. Nothing completely out of the blue.

While in motion, a service shifter notification pops up. At the same time, all of the gear indicator lights next to the gear shifter light up. Over the past 3 weeks this has happened 4 times, 2 of which have occurred in the past 2 days and 66 miles apart. I've attached photos of the notifications from the 2 most recent occurrences, along with a photo of the illuminated gear indicators. A quick internet search revealed this is a very common issue with this vehicle with hundreds of complaints across various Jeep forums.

Service shifter light came on and gear shift lights are all red,p,r,n,d during motor operations turning/pulling into my neighborhood. Approx. Speed was less than 20 mph. Upon shifting to park and turning the vehicle off and then back on the error message disappears and shifter lights are no longer red. Has happened three (3) weeks in a row on wed, wed, and tues at approx. 5:45 pm. Service appoint scheduled tomorrow 02/19/20 with the manufacturer. Approx. Mileage on vehicle when error first occurred was 43k. Was told the power train warranty may not cover the issue. Researched online and found numerous individuals expressing the same exact issue, particularly after 36k miles.

Service shifter warning appeared while driving. All gear indicator lights near shifter illuminated red. This occurred during traffic on highway around 30 mph.

Stopped at a stop sign while driving. All the gear selection lights came on along with "service shifter" message on dash display. I had to shut off engine and restart to get them to turn off. Operated normally after that. Dealer says code reader fault says that shifter wiring harness and bezel have to be replaced. Some type of short in wiring. They say it is not covered by warranty. I see other years of this vehicle have been recalled due to this issue. Not sure why not the 2017.

In April 2018, my gearshift quit working. I was stationary. It would not shift gears. The lights on the gearshift console all lit up. My car was under warranty as it was only 14 months old at the time. The dealer I purchased from replaced the gearshift. On sept. 18, 2019, the gear shift lights all came on, the car dinged and the dashboard said check gearshift. I am now 49,000 miles and out of warranty. I read online there are many complaints of the gear shift/transmission on Jeeps including mine, a Cherokee.

When car was 1 yr old service shifter warning light came on including all gear shift lights lit at same time. Shifter assembly was replaced under warrant. Less than a year later, same issue, assembly replaced again with what I was told was a new part that came out to deal with problem. 2 months later, same problem again. Was explained to me that this is has to do with wiring harness and shifter assembly. All times, this has happened while car was moving.

While moving on a city street, the message "service shifter" appeared on instrument panel and all gear lights on shift console illuminated red. Condition remained until vehicle was stopped and turned off, then back on.

While driving the service shifter light comes on and every light on the gear indicator lights up. Dealer says they do not know. After vehicle has been turned off it went away. Dealer told me we are fine to drive if it doesnt come back.

I was driving home on a major street when the message service shifter popped up on my dashboard. The lights turned red on all gears. I could not see my speed or any other information. My mileage had just read 19141 I believe prior to the screen going to service shifter message. I pulled into a parking lot. I placed the gear into park. I then googled the message, make, and model to find out more information. I found forum on cargurus. Com stating to turn off the vehicle and restart. I waited 10 minutes before turning on the vehicle. When I turned on the vehicle. The message disappeared and the red gear lights turned off.

"service shifter" error came on screen and all of the gear lights beside the shifter lit up. After turning vehicle off and driving again later, error disappeared.

I bought my car 3/21/2017 and I've loved it up until the recent problems. Since June/2019 when I make a left turn all of the lights on my gear shifter light up and a display of "service shifter" pops up and the only way to clear it is to pull over, turn the car off and start it up. At first it happened randomly, but now it more frequent. I purchased an extended warranty and they told me there is nothing wrong, but now an additional issue has started. Sometimes when all the lights appear when I'm make a turn or getting on the highway even, I've almost been rear ended multiple times because now the car will just shut off!! this is scary and unsafe, but it is my only means of transportation and yes all of my regular maintenance is up to date as well.
