Jeep Cherokee owners have reported 23 problems related to owners/service manual (under the equipment category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Jeep Cherokee based on all problems reported for the Cherokee.
I've read much on this issue and it seems that there needs to be some sort of recall to fix this issue. My 2016 Jeep with less than 20k miles on it is getting a "service shifter" warning message. When this light turns on, all the shifter lights come on as well. When I turn off the car and turn it back on it clears the fault only to see the error message pop up again within 5 or so minutes of driving. This also makes it where I cannot manually up or down shift. No issues turning or stationary, seems to be no difference in the city or highway.

Less than a year into the purchase of a brand new 2019 Jeep Cherokee, the auto start-stop failed completely during daily rides (before then, it used to work perfectly -- at the red light for example). Took it to the dealership service center where I had bought my car from, they told me the feature functions on a separate battery and that they could do nothing crazy but manually (temporarily) recharge whatever battery they were referring to. The service manager also cluelessly told me to give it a few hours after each ride until the battery responsible for the auto start-stop functionality recharges itself. Although I followed their instruction, I got zero result. Today at the time of writing this complaint, it is getting close to two years after my purchase and there occurs another annoying bug: the main battery keeps dying on me every time I want to start the car. Also, the front display shows an "engine temperature hot" message as the battery fails to start the car, although I do not believe the message is relevant since my car had been sitting in a fairly cool spot for at least 10 hours - no reason for any parts of it to get hot while the engine is shut down.

service shifter is displayed, meaning I cannot use any of the in vehicle controls or use the manual transmission feature or see what gear I am in. It's an automatic but has the manual option. I've seen hundreds of other people effected by this, needs to be a recall ASAP or grounds for a class action if no action is taken.
"service shifter" has popped up numerous times with all gears lit up ( park, reverse, neutral, drive and manual) . The first time, it popped up as soon as I put it in drive. The 2nd time, it popped up while in drive going less than 45mph through town. The next time, ( March 9, 2020) it popped up while on the interstate going 70mph, 3 different times within 45 minutes. The dealer stated they have never heard of this, so how do I get it fixed, unless there's a recall? this has to be a drivetrain issue as it affects the gear shifter?.

If it is below freezing outside, my gas door will not open. When I press the open button inside my car, it makes a sound as if it is trying to open, but will not budge. Even when I try to open it manually, it won't open without extreme force and several minutes of trying. My gas door has popped off twice due to this issue and trying to get it open.
Car went into limp mode. Traction control went off, message, 4-wheel drive is not available. My car lost power and I haft to use manual mode to shift. Dealer stated , that even though I gave them the trouble codes, they could not duplicate problem. Service shifter, light came on but when I restart it goes away.

At 28,000 miles my Jeep Cherokee had the service shifter light come on periodically and it would just disappear when the car was restarted. No one was able to research the error because it would not remain on and there was no documentation in the manual on how to resolve. At 40,000 miles the error became more frequent and at 42000 miles it became constant. I took it to the dealer today and they said it was a shifter component and they were ordering a bezel to install at a very expensive cost. Every Jeep forum shows that many people are having the same exact issue and I think it should be investigated.
I flat tow this 2014 Jeep Cherokee behind a 40 ft class a newmar motorhome. I have experienced a violent death wobble 6 times from 30 mph to 70 mph. The event seems to happen after turns or bumps. It is extremely violent and the only remedy is come to a complete stop even on a highway with no shoulder. I have been in contact with Jeep national beginning oct 2019. They examined the car for a week in oct in mountain home, arkansas. They checked suspension, shocks, tires, alignment, struts, etc. No defects. They had no suggestions. There was a recall in 2016 that they said was complied with that involved a wiring harness for flat towing and gave me an amended page for my operating manual saying the harness was required. The event happened again and I went to my local Jeep dealer and verified that the harness was installed. On my last trip in September 2020, it happened again. I called Jeep cares and requested to speak to an engineer or technician and they said that was not possible and advised I take it to a dealer. I called my hometown dealer and spoke with the shop foreman. He looked into it and had nothing to offer. I went to the dealership last Friday and for the first time was told mopar part #68321424ab was required and it was not installed on my car. This was the first Jeep person that was aware of the problem and knew what the solution was. Jeep wants me to pay $750 to have the part (a wiring harness) installed. I think it is a solution to a design flaw and one that all Jeep service people should be aware of. This is a safety issue!.
Frequent driver distraction - integrated navigation system weather alerts from sirusxm travel link application. Sirusxm application 'travel link' is enabled and there is no user or system ability to configure or disable from fca uconnect radio/units in all 2019 fca vehicles (with navigation) including our recently leased Jeep Cherokee. Frequent and sometimes numerous weather and travel alerts display on radio screen, covering the entire screen, and do not disappear. The alert blocks the screen, including navigation, and must be manually dismissed taking focus off the road. The alerts are not just local alerts but rather cover a 100 mile radius which is also not configurable. This contributes to the numerous amount of alerts and frequency by simply driving a few miles. Fca support including the local dealer have confirmed there is no ability to configure the alerts or disable the alerts. They suggested contacting sirusxm which provides the sirusxm travel link service. Sirusxm is unwilling to help (remove or configure travel link) and is only willing to remove all trial sirusxm services including the radio. They suggested we contact the dealer. Other oem's that offer travellink service allow for users to configure the service or disable if needed. Fca customer service did mention this issue has resulted in many complaints but they do not have a software update available. I believe fca and sirusxm believe this is an inconvenience only. This is not just an inconvenience. Drivers must manually dismiss every alert. My son is a fairly new driver and this is very concerning.
I purchased a 2015 Jeep Cherokee latitude September 2018 with 64,000 miles on it. When driving vehicle on the street, the vehicle will jerk really hard like it is changing gears. If I am putting vehicle in reverse and leaving out of my drive way, the vehicle jerks. Whenever I am driving at a low speed (0-45mph) the vehicle jerks. When coming to a complete stop, like a stop sign, red light, or heavy traffic, vehicle jerks once I accelerate. I took my vehicle to dealer to be serviced on November 3, 2018 regarding this issue and I was told they found no problems but there was an update (rrt) completed on vehicle. I took my vehicle back to dealership on Saturday, November 17, 2018 for electrical component services and complained about the same issue and was told vehicle is not showing any problems but my thermostat needed replacing due to thermostat rationality code. I scheduled an appointment for a future date to the service. Also had low beam headlight fixed was told the bulb didn't need replacing that somehow it came unscrewed. Headlight was working before I left, later on that day headlight went out again. I live in houston where the temps re now in the 50s highs 60s and I had my heater on, all of a sudden I started to smell smoke like oil smoke. But I don't have any lights coming on on my dashboard. Can you please tell why is my automatic vehicle driving like it's manual and with it only having 1 previous owner that all of these things are happening???.
According to owners manual and Jeep, this vehicle is designed and capable of being flat towed behind an RV. There was a supplemental document from Jeep advising if you experience a wobble when towing you need kit 683214ab. This needs to be mandatory as it happened twice in the last month after towing thousands of miles, the Jeep will start violently wobbling when driving requiring the RV to fully stop in order to recover. On the two occasions, there was no warning. The first issue the car was swinging so much it damaged the rear passenger car tire rim by hitting the curb. Luckily there were no bikers or pedestrian at the time. The RV was traveling less than 25 mph on flat street roads. The first time we turned a hard right and was +200 from the turn. The second time we turned left and about +200 from the turn. The Jeep is configured with supplemental braking, lights, tow bar, and break away kit. We tow it with a 40' diesel pusher RV about 34k lbs. My request is to have Jeep make this fix mandatory instead of elective.
This 2015 Jeep Cherokee has the 2-speed transfer unit, and was sold as flat towable, and manual so states that fact. The manufacturer made the power steering system electric rather than mechanical. In 2017 after many complaints about the Cherokee not tracking while being towed behind the motorhome and causing a severe left to right wobble behind the motorhome, Jeep issued a revision to the owner's manual (s-13). It states that a flat-tow wiring kit should be installed, but Jeep wants the part and labor to install this kit to be paid by the Jeep owner, not by the manufacturer. This is a safety issue and should be addressed under a recall. On a straight road this wobble happened twice to me and almost caused me to loose control of my motorhome, not to mention damage to my Jeep.
I have a 2015 Jeep Cherokee latitude and for some reason when it gets cold outside. My car won't start. In the morning when I get up and it's in my drive way I click my car remote to unlock my car and my headlights won't even come on so I have to manually open my door with my key. I turn the key in the ignition and there is no sounds or cranking. The monitor in front of the driver turns on then it shuts off after a while. The lights inside the car turn on but I'm not sure about the radio. There are some days after a few moments it starts and there are other days where it takes hours to start. I don't know what's the issue. This usually happens when it's 30 degrees or lower. Sometimes even after work it won't start and I would have to find a ride home leaving it at my job.
Sometimes car won't start completely out of oil no warning not fit for change bucking from transmission cooling 2 codes set off one said vacuum leak other unknown complete electrical panel went pickles across dash radio phone sinking have to shit down car for to rebut moyer sounds like jet engines now tapping all four brakes rotors and calipaors needed to be replaced bucks forward no warning lights have to manually go threw computer to find out what is wrong transmission worked on twice told at first nothing wrong also ac failed now other fans not working cooling not holding shaking in dash gone up as high as 300 smell antifreeze all before 2000 miles.
I have experienced the ¿death wobble¿ several times in the past two years while towing my 2014 Jeep Cherokee latitude behind my class a motorhome. In 2016 the last occurrence, and the most worrisome for me, occurred while driving at highway speed on an interstate highway on a major trip in September. Approaching a construction zone, there was a cross-over from the west bound lanes into the eastbound inside lane. This cross-over had a difference in cross-slope and an abrupt change of grade. Traffic was going at about 40-45 miles per hour at the point of the cross-over. The wobble occurred just as I was crossing from the westbound to eastbound lane. It was a violent wobble, with a huge side sway happening at the rear of the motorhome. I slowed down as much as I could. I put on my flashers and continued at approximately 10 miles per hour until I was able to find a cross slope in the median where I was able to pull over and stop. Until I found this area, I was fighting the wildly swinging rear end of my motorhome and the Jeep wobbling back and forth behind me. And once I had stopped and knew I could resume my trip and that this episode of the wobble was over, I could not get back out onto the one-lane westbound traffic lane because of the backup of traffic that had built up behind me while I was driving at 10. From this point until I returned home, I was afraid every time I hit a bump or rough section of the interstate that I was going to trigger another wobble, but fortunately I did not experience another episode that trip. I¿m at a point now where I¿m afraid to tow my Jeep. The only reason I purchased it was because the Jeep literature I researched before I bought it stated that it could be towed four wheels down (with the active drive ii transfer case set to neutral per the owner¿s manual) with no restrictions on speed or distance when towing.
While driving down the road at 50mph with my trailhawk edition Jeep, the roof rail bar ripped out of the roof of the car sending my kayak rack and 35 pound kayak down the center of the road. Chrysler/Jeep states they are not led to believe the incident was a manufacturing responsibility. Lives could have been lost. The Jeep dealership tried to tell me they found documentation that the rails are not to be used unless they have a manufactured crossbar with a maximum weight of 150 pounds. My kayak rack has a crossbar and the weight of the rack was maybe 15 pounds and the kayak itself was 35 pounds. There was no where in my owners manual that states I cannot use my roof rails. Only a safety statement saying nothing should be screwed into my roof for airbag and safety purposes. Even with manufactured crossbars they wouldn't be able to screw into my roof so they would not have held my roof rail into the roof. The roof is very thin and there are clear holes where the bar completely ripped out of the roof. If there was a vehicle behind me people could have been very hurt. Chrysler sent an investigator to do a report on the vehicle they sent me a one paragraph letter stating they decline any assistance associated with this incident. Safety concerns for other people on the road and other Jeep owners was not addressed. At the time of the incident I was on a back road going 50 miles an hour with no wind gusts or any reason for this to occur. This incident occurred on August 7 and even though it was reported to the dealership on the eighth I have received no help. I am attaching photos of the kayak safely mounted on the kayak rack the day before the incident and the damages to my car.
While flat towing the Jeep behind our tiffin motor home we experienced severe side to side rocking in the RV. Had to come to a complete stop on interstate. We just received a notice of an addendum to owners manual concerning a wiring kit to be installed. We consider this a real safety issue but Jeep does not. Please advise as we thought the problem was the motor home but it appears to be the Jeep Cherokee.
Initially car shuttered when coming to a stop and was downshifting. The engine start/stop malfunction light illuminated and the service engine mil came on as well. From then on the car behaved as though it was stuck in 3rd gear causing a total lack of torque/power when accelerating from stops, and the engine rpms were going extremely high and the car wouldn't shift. Even tried using the "manual shift" feature but the car indicated it was shifting gears, but the rpms did not change, nor could you feel the car shift. When accelerating from a stopped position there was no power and the car crawled/struggled to get moving forward. Was almost t-boned trying to turn across oncoming traffic to get to a parking lot so I could stop. Once I pulled into the parking lot car would not go into reverse. I put it in reverse, but the car wouldn't go. Turned the car off and then on and everything seemed to reset except mil and car started bevaing normally. I took the car to the dealership and they "reflashed" the pcm, tcm, and bcm. 1 day later the car shutters when down shifting and error lights come on. Loses power, and 50% of the time seems like it is not shifting gears. 25% of the time won't go into reverse. Car behaves normally after restarting though the mil indicator light remains on. Usually around 10 miles later the whole series of malfunction starts again, always when the car is downshifting before a stop. Just dropped the car off to the dealer and they are having their transmission specialist look at it. When I dropped it off it was giving the same error code, "improbable error" from the tcm/pcm. The lack of power to accelerate and inability to go into reverse makes this car simply unsafe to drive when the errors occur. Attaching first repair invoice from the tcm/pcm/bcm reflash. Waiting to hear what the transmission specialist says.
Accelerates with application of brake while in motion turning. Vehicle accelerates on its own accord, while in motion. Stalled while moving forward in traffic. Forward lunging. Motor runs very rough. Transmission shifts roughly. Manual shift does not allow for manual shifting. Mileage 16/18 city 22/24 highway which is below ad limits of up to 30mpg. This was a major purchasing point for us. Motor whines on passenger side. Smell burning anti-freeze. A/c blows only hot air. Floor fan on passenger side and rear seat fan barely operate or are non-functional. Driver and passenger seats along with visors threads falling apart (seats to be replaced if they ever come in, it has been three (3) months waiting for parts). Seal above rear hatch falling off - replaced and fell off again. Radio has very poor reception. No cd or dvd player. Inside of Jeep trailhawk sounds like a city bus - everything sounds loose - this developed after the entire vehicle had been taken apart for numerous repairs. This vehicle is one lunge away from seriously injuring or worse, one or more parties.
I was turning at a busy intersection outside of DC when it appeared that my engine completely shut off and I was coasting. I pressed on the gas but the car went nowhere. After a few seconds, it kicked back on and sped up to 50mph. Thankfully no one was behind me or I could have gotten rear ended. Three days later, my husband was driving my car on the highway (going at least 65mph) when the malfunction indicator light appeared and the rpm's were well over 5,000 when slowing down to only 30 mph. The car was not shifting properly and we had to pull over. Unfortunately we were four hours from home and had to "manually" shift the entire drive home because the automatic transmission was not functioning. We took it to a dealership and they performed the software update and insisted that it was fixed. My husband demanded they drive it for a longer distance and sure enough, the car broke down and was taken back to the dealership. They ended up replacing the transmission and I just picked up my car yesterday (8/24). I still notice it jerking back when I press on the gas after coming to a stop and not shifting properly. I feel so unsafe in this car and none of the Jeep employees (at my local dealership and corporate) seem to be concerned. I live in the city and cannot afford to have my car breakdown in the middle of the road or have the transmission stop working like before. It took 3 weeks of being serviced and I still don't think that it's fixed properly.
While following the owners manual for flat towing behind a motor home I crossed multiple railroad tracks at a grade crossing and the Cherokee tow vehicle began a violent oscillation that shook the entire motor home and did not stop until the vehicles came to a complete stop.
On 3/17/2015 I took my vehicle to local Jeep dealer for 2 separate recalls- one for the airbag and one for the transmission. I had not had any problems with the vehicle but had received a notice in the mail advising me of the recalls. At that time an electronic transmission "upgrade" was made. When I left the service the transmission was "missing" and when I called the service dept I was advised that it may take a few days for it to normalize. I took the vehicle back on 3/26 and the service dept manually reprogrammed the transmission. This still did not fix the problem and I took the vehicle back on 4/14 and they tried another fix which did not fix the problem. I then took the vehicle back on 5/5 and the service dept contacted Jeep and was advised that they were working on developing a new software but that it may be a few months before this was available. I was advised to take the vehicle home and they would contact me. The vehicle transmission completely stalls on an incline and almost completely comes to a stop. The vehicle also skips gears when trying to press the gas at times. I was advised that this had happened to other Jeep vehicles when the "upgrade" was done but that the program to fix it was still being worked on and it may be some time. This is a safety concern as we almost got rear-ended several times because the transmission missed gears and would not go. The other safety concern is the almost complete stall on an incline. This vehicle is made to climb rocks and go in different weather conditions and this could cause a major accident.
