49 problems related to engine stall have been reported for the 2006 Jeep Commander. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
This has been the 3rd time this type of event happens, the first time was at a city street driving straight forward at 30-35mph and the engine started stalling, truck completely went off, head lights would go on and off, along with my interior dashboard indicators and media center. Second time, same thing, and the third time while driving at about 35-40mph in a city street and gradually slowing down to 10-15mph to make a left the truck completely went off, head lights would go on and off, along with my interior dashboard indicators and media center. It seem like I had turned off the engine completely for like a split second. I though it might've been that I hit the key with my knee, but I pulled over restarted the engine after 15 min, and the problem continued. All the lights would go on and off and the engine power would shut down, when putting the gears, it would sound very forcing. I turned it off again and waited 30 min, restarted the truck again it did the problem for a few seconds and then it was like nothing ever happened.
Driving under certain conditions the vehicle engine completely shuts off and stalls. This happens on the highway, mostly at speeds of about 45-60 mph. The two recalls available on the vehicle as it relates to this issue (tcm/pcm ) ( ignition switch) have been recently fixed by the dearlership, however the vehicle continues to mulfunction in the same manner and appears to be getting worse. Contacting Chrysler, they are abrasive and uncooperative. A little research shows that there are several owner complaints on this very issue dating back to 2006-2007-2008. There appears to be an "active" investigation ongoing by the NHTSA-office of defects investigations. What is the status of this investigation-10 years later??? there appears to be no interest on the part of the manaufacturer to address this issue without the vehicle owner incurring massive loses in endless diagnostic and repair expenses.

We were on a main road coming up to a stoplight when the engine suddenly stalled. Hands were still on steering wheel. Had my son and sister with me. Had to put the car in "park" and restart the engine. Did not get hit, but dangerously close to being hit from behind.
My beloved Jeep Commander suddenly shut off while driving at 40mph. With no prior problems or warning signs the engine completely stalled- instantly I lost both power steering & brakes. Needless to say I was terrified. After much confusion & hassle I was told to replace my key. (reason being the 'chip' inside was malfunctioning. ) I replaced the $270 key which solved nothing. To my surprise, many Commander owners experience this same problem with no help from Jeep. Not only do Jeep dealerships ignore the potential recall warning on the Commander, but they actually recommend expensive 'solutions' that do not even touch the known problem. It seems as though there are no solutions for this faulty system, given that no dealership can successfully stop the shutting off. There are way too many owners experiencing the same dangerous stall. I cannot in good conscience ignore the fact that this problem goes beyond inconvenience; this is potentially very dangerous and the Jeep Commander needs to be recalled.

Started the car at the house and drove 1 mile to the gas station. Shut the car off to fill the tank. Tried to restart and it would not start until I pushed the gas in. When it started smoke poured out the back. Took it across the street to a mechanic and they said the engine was trashed. Had the car towed to the Jeep dealer where I bought it. They said the same thing that the motor was trashed. I paid the Dodge dealer to tear down the engine so I could know what happened. They informed me that the valve in the 4th cylinder had slipped down into the motor and destroyed the piston and cylinder wall. Have to have a new engine installed. The vehicle is a 2006 Jeep Commander with the 5. 7 hemi and only has 77,000 miles on it and from what I have researched and talking to mechanics this is a problem that should never happen. This part should not fail in this manor. Have gotten no response from Chrysler and am taking on the cost of the repair myself. If I was hard on the motor it would be one thing but it was only driven to work by my wife. We only put maybe 20,000 mile on it since we bought it. I am aware that this problem has occurred in other vehicles and who knows how many were repaired by Chrysler, under warranty. I will be into this vehicle about 40,000 dollars after the new engine is installed and I think Chrysler bares part of the blame and should be held accountable. Thank you for your time in considering this matter.
While driving a highway speed the engine stalled. Has happened multiple times since the first incident. All power is lost and I have to pull over to the side of the road. Engine does restart.

I have a 2006 Jeep Commander limited v8 5. 7l hemi. It is a low mileage vehicle, always garaged and never been in an accident. About 6 months ago it began stalling when going from reverse to drive. The electrical did not go off, the engine simply stalled. This happened countless times easily 20+ occurrences. We took it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong with it, they told us to use higher octane fuel and they updated the software in the car. . . A week later my wife was at work and it would not even turn over even though all of the electrical components worked fine. We had it towed and they replaced the battery and told us that was the problem. Yesterday I was driving the truck, it was in drive and as I slowed to a stop it stalled - again the electrical remained on. We took it to the dealer this morning and they told us it was not part of the original recall and they needed to keep it, but couldn't tell us what was wrong, we called Chrysler and they couldn't tell us anything either. I have two young children and this could be horrible if this happened on the highway.
My 2006 Jeep Commander (hemi 5. 7) engine stalled and lost all power at 75 mph on the highway. My 3 kids, wife and imyself could have been killed. It has also stalled 4 other times on the road at slow speeds. All the electrical controls are lost and the vehicle stalles until I shut it off then on again.
Driving, turning right into parking spot and car just died, engine just stopped. Turned key and started again. Not sure if had to do with power steering because I had it turned tight or engine stall. . Which I have seen reported.
2006 Jeep Commander driving at 50+ mph on a straight highway engine died. Power brakes and steering was lost as well as all instrument panel function. The Jeep recall fix for engine stalling had been put on within the last month. This was the second time this has happened at high speed driving, the first time was about a year ago. In both cases the engine can not be restarted until the vehicle comes to a complete stop and put into park.
Problem with my 2006 Jeep Commander engine stalling. This has happened on 3-4 different occasions and happened again today in a parking lot. The engine just completely shuts down and nothing works, including the steering. Each time it has happened I have been going at a slow speed. I have taken it to my dealer who says they can't find anything wrong with it ( bob schwartz-bunker hill indiana). I am going to take it in again to see if they can possibly fix this problem now since there have been other Commander owners complain. I am really afraid to drive this vehicle now especially with my kids. If Jeep is aware of these complaints, they need to issue a recall on the 2006 & 2007 models also instead of just the 2008. If this would happen at highway speeds, it would have possibly been deadly!!! please help.
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. While driving approximately 62 mph, all of the warning light indicators illuminated on the instrument panel and then the engine stalled. The contact shifted the gear into neutral and restarted the vehicle . He then shifted into drive andthe vehicle was able to continue normally. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis. The technician was unable to locate the problem. The identical failures occurred on two separate occasions, however there was a burning odor. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was 20,000.
There is a 4/07 NHTSA investigation into 2006-7 Jeep Commanders' intermittent and persistent engine stalling problems - supposedly in response to 76 complaints. Nhtsa really needs to read its own complaints about this problem, which can be found not only in the Commander line but also in 2005-2008 Jeep grand cherokees. There are hundreds of complaints on the internet (jeepforum. Com, usenet news, etc. ) about Jeep vehicles stalling, besides the Commander. I fear that even if Chrysler is finally forced to address the problem under this investigation, they will simply point to the "2006-7 Commanders" portion of the settlement and completely ignore the exact same problem in other years and other models of Jeep. They cannot be allowed to continue waving off their customers, who paid for their products in good faith, and now are not being supported. They need to be forced to acknowledge and rectify this very wide spread problem immediately, before their negligence gets someone killed. Unfortunately, we lowly consumers have little to no power over a giant like Chrysler. That is why we need organizations like the NHTSA to help us. Nhtsa, please review your other complaints under the Jeep brand and expand your investigation as appropriate. Anyone else with a Jeep that keeps stalling, please continue to post your complaints here and anywhere else you can find. These stalling problems need to be fixed, and Chrysler needs to take ownership of this dangerous issue immediately.
Jeep Commander. This is the 2nd report I have made. On January 24, 2008 my Jeep Commander had another engine stall. The third time I the last 5 months this has happened. I cannot locate my original complaint to you, but I wanted to file this again anyway.
November 24 evening leaving fuji (children in car) November 30 morning on way to work ? hit mailbox (baby in car) December 5 morning on way to work ? dies turning out of subdivision and stalls in middle of street (baby in car) there was one other instance when I had all kids with me?it was prior to Nov 24 but I do not recall the actual date all of the instances the engine stalled, the lights (when on) went out, I lost the ability to steer and brake as well. The mph ranged from 4 or 5 mph to 35 mph. There were times when it was warm and days that it was cold. Nothing seemed to standout as a possible "trigger" I took car to dealer after the November 24th incident. Tony in the service department said there was really nothing that they could do unless it was a problem they could "make happen" when they drove it. A few days later I wrecked into a mailbox when my Jeep stalled and I lost steering and braking capability. . . . I am lucky it was not head on with a large truck or a tree.

My husband and I are leasing a 2006 Jeep Commander since Nov 2005. I have been involved in 3 separate traffic accidents on may 31 2006, August 8 2006 and September 20 2007. The engine stalled during low speed turns on both August 8 2006 and September 20 2007. I had just left a stop sign on may 31 2006 when my engine stalled in the intersection, resulting in a crash. I was cited for failure to yield on may 31 2006. I wasn't cited on August 8 2006 or September 20 2007, although the police report from the September 20 2007 accident describes a "failure to yield. " I have also had ongoing tire pressure issues as well as intermittent brake failure issues. Prior to may 31 2006 I had never been involved in a traffic accident nor had I received any traffic citations. I am 48 years old. My vehicle was repaired twice after the first 2 accidents, but I am awaiting contact from the other party's auto insurer before proceeding with the repairs following yesterday's accident. I've brought the 2006 Jeep Commander in to bud mulcahy's Jeep on several occasions. That dealership is now closed.

2006 Jeep Commanders engine stalls and headlights go out. I took it to the dealership, at which time they advised that they could not help me. They said they would have to see it happen. . . Like when my lights went out on a dark freeway almost killing me and my husband.
Incident of engine stall while driving in model year (my) 2006 through 2007 Jeep Commander vehicles (subject vehicles). Engine stall with a simultaneous loss of some or all lighting systems, including headlamps. The engine stall happened several times.
Experienced engine stall and loss of power to instrument panel momentarily while approaching residential 30 mph speed. Had just pulled out of my driveway and was accelerating when it happened. I noticed the stall and looked at the instrument panel, which appeared to be inoperative. Then it 'came back to life' and I tried to accelerate. The engine responded and I kept driving with no other issues.
