Jeep Commander owners have reported 91 problems related to automatic transmission control module (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Jeep Commander based on all problems reported for the Commander.
Power train. The (tcm/pcm/tecm) Chrysler is recalling 24, 461 Jeep Commander vehicles equipped with 407 v8 engines. Th powertrain control module (pcm) was programmed with software that may allow the engine to stall under certain operating conditions. This could cause a crash without warning. ( my Jeep turns on, but it is not able to be moved, it is stalled indefinitely). I asked the dealer @rockwall Dodge, rockwall TX to check the pcm/tcm/tecm. They refused. Said they were not able to check this situation. Didn't have that equipment. Electrical system. This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. The air bag lights comes on randomly. The engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems. I am unable to unlock the ignition on several occasions. Suspension. Rock krawler recalled 44 performance suspension systems sold as aftermarket equipment for use on the vehicle listed above. We have had suspension issues on our Jeep. No one can find the issue to fix it. The Jeep makes noise at the suspension system.

2006 Jeep Commander limited 5. 7l v8 message as appears on dash - transmission over temp while driving a short distance the message transmission over temp appears, the fan kicks on high & is very loud, and it feels like the transmission disengages like being thrown into neutral, but is still drivable. About 2 weeks prior, I noticed smoke coming out from under hood & the engine coolant tank was almost empty. There were no visible leaks on carport. I refilled the tank & immediately called kilby automotive repair shop, then took it in. They said that the radiator cap needed to be replaced. The also said the valve cover gasket was leaking. They replaced the radiator cap & made an appointment for June 3rd to replace the valve cover gasket. Before that appointment the vehicle started displaying the transmission over temp message. I took it into kilby automotive on may 27, 2021. They said it was a faulty transmission temperature sensor, but they could not repair. They have done a lot of repairs on the vehicle for several years. I called ultimate luxury auto service explaining the issue. The man said that he could put a new sensor in & there is a broken transmission mount. He replaced the sensor. Fix mount later. When I was driving home, the same message appeared & the fan kicked on as before. I messaged the shop & took the vehicle back in. They put a 2nd sensor in, drove it & received the same transmission over temp message. They returned the 2 new sensors & put my original sensor back in. They said they were sorry they could not fix it & dropped the price of repairs. I entered the make, model, & message online & found out a lot of people have the same problem. Some people have said they replaced numerous parts & it did not fix it, and others say they replaced the pcm. I am disabled and do not want to be stranded or have a vehicle fire. I am afraid that it would pose a risk to me & others, as transmission oil can ignite on hot surfaces and cause a fire in the engine.

Tl the contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. While driving 30 mph, the vehicle came to a complete stop without warning. The contact placed the vehicle in neutral and restarted the engine. The esp, bas, and traction warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that a new tcm or pcm was needed for the power module. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 161,920.
Consumer writes in regard to amending/extending 10 year rule which requires automakers to only supply part for 10 years.
Our 2007 Jeep Commander has had a recurring issue for over a year while in operation whether in motion or stationary, vehicle will shut off randomly. When you attempt to restart the vehicle, it starts right back up again. The random vehicle shutdowns take place in all driving conditions and regardless of uphill or downhill driving. Brought the Jeep Commander to the Jeep dealership and they replaced the ignition switch as part of a recall. This did not resolve the problem at all and the dealership was unable to figure out causes for random stalling even when the Commander failed during testing with technicians. I replaced virtually every sensor I could imagine including, throttle position sensor and idle air control sensor, egr, map sensor, air intake sensor and the pcm. No luck, we have the same random stalling and the procedure is, restart the vehicle in neutral for recovery while in motion. The restart does not fail, but the random stalling continues sometimes five or six times on a 100 mile trip. This is dangerous and can get someone or their family killed.
The tcm on this vehicle goes in neutral when you are driving use 3 different Jeep Commander and all have the same issue report it to the dealer and they told me is the tcm malfunction.
Driving under certain conditions the vehicle engine completely shuts off and stalls. This happens on the highway, mostly at speeds of about 45-60 mph. The two recalls available on the vehicle as it relates to this issue (tcm/pcm ) ( ignition switch) have been recently fixed by the dearlership, however the vehicle continues to mulfunction in the same manner and appears to be getting worse. Contacting Chrysler, they are abrasive and uncooperative. A little research shows that there are several owner complaints on this very issue dating back to 2006-2007-2008. There appears to be an "active" investigation ongoing by the NHTSA-office of defects investigations. What is the status of this investigation-10 years later??? there appears to be no interest on the part of the manaufacturer to address this issue without the vehicle owner incurring massive loses in endless diagnostic and repair expenses.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Commander. While driving 40 mph, the contact heard a clicking sound. The transmission overheated, check gauges, and battery warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and then to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the pcm was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. After the failures, the vehicle was remedied under NHTSA campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system:ignition:switch); however, the vehicle would not start. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 08v203000 (power train), but the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 111,000.
I have a 2007 Jeep same engine and trans, it is doing same think as the 2006 recall is expressing. All I get from dealer is they can find nothing wrong. I can't get them to help me with anything. If you search the web you will see this is a big issue on the 2007 Jeeps also. I was very close to getting into a crash today. This is the 4th time it has happened. Recall number: 08v203000recall date: 05/06/2008 component: power train:automatic transmission:control module (tcm, pcm) problem summary: Chrysler is recalling 24,461 my 2006 Jeep Commander vehicles equipped with 4. 7l v8 engines. Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph up an incline, the gear shift switched into the neutral position independently as the rpm revved without warning. The contact mentioned while driving down the hill, the vehicle failed to accelerate and jerked forward as the check engine warning light illuminated the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the VIN was not included NHTSA campaign number:08v203000 (power train) or 13v175000 (electrical system , power train). At any speed, anytime, cold or hot, the vehicle will produce a message on the instrument cluster information center stating " transmission over temp ". The vehicle was brought to the mechanic two times already and can't find anything wrong. This message will display on a cool morning upon start up or after the vehicle has been running for some time. The message will not stay on longer than a few minutes, then will turn off. A ton of research has been done and no one has the answer yet. The only thing I came across was to replace the pcm/ecm, someone stated there was a glitch with the computer. Many people have this reoccurring problem and it can't be fixed yet.
We have only owned this used Jeep for not even two months, bought from us auto sales oct 18 2013, vehicle began jerking around all over out of the blue could barely drive it almost caused us to get into an accident, had to pull over multiple times, took for service, said it was not transmission or engine, see on internet five recalls, have read many people having issues, today vehicle freezes up while driving twice, decelerates powers down to almost a stall out in traffic while my five kids are in this vehicle with me! very dangerous, read on internet multiple places and people having same issues and Chrysler not fixing problems??? why not do they want to be sued or cause an accident? my vehicle just started doing this now two months after buying it used!!!!! twice in one day freezes up while trying to drive it, powers down wont accelerate, like its stuck in one gear wont go loses power like it will shut off suddenly have to pull over and turn off and restart to get it to stop doing this. . . . Make them fix it before it causes accidents for not just me but everyone else that is having this problem search the internet you will find many are having this same issue!!!!!! do your job! I expect something to be done about this at once! and remedied. . . . Do I take this to the dealer to have it fixed? or back where I bought it????? I am reading that Chrysler is refusing to address the issues and multiple incidents are found all over the internet just search it up under make and model and year of the vehicle! and type in loss of power stalling and it says the remedy is a pcm module or something? I really need this addressed at once and told how to fix this as we just bought this vehicle.
Hello, my 2006 Jeep Commander started stalling out over a year ago and has stalled on me on and off various times at different speeds but usually at a higher rate of speed, which has been very scary. I have chosen not to drive the vehicle anymore and now it is sitting in my driveway and I am driving a 1991 Honda because I cannot afford to buy a new car at this time. I just paid this Jeep off and now I cannot drive the vehicle. The dealer fixed the one recall on the vehicle called the front control module and it ran fine for a couple of weeks and now once again the car stalled out while I was headed to a camping trip with my kids a couple months ago going 50 mph and almost caused an accident. I was almost hit by a semi and several cars were honking and trying to avoid my Jeep. I lose all power steering and there are no notifications that the car will stall so it is very scary and dangerous for me and my children. I am so upset that I cannot drive the car and feel safe. I have contacted Jeep and they have a recall for 2006 Jeep Commanders that covers up to January 2006 and my vehicle was made in March so they told me there is nothing they can do. The recall was for the pcm which my car has the same code on the diagnosis but now they are telling me to take it to the dealer and I have to pay for this. I really hope that this situation can be resolved by Jeep stepping up and taking care of this issue for the safety of people.
I purchased my 2006 Jeep Commander from city auto in memphis, TN on 9/14/11 and was told it was a one-owner vehicle originating from the state of pennsylvania. I noticed hesitatation in the transmission and variances (rough - up and down) in the idling shortly after my purchase. I then started to get the "transmission/engine" light coming on. But it would go away almost as quick as it would come on. I then had my engine stall while driving full speed on the interstate. I lost all power! fortunately, I was able to get over to the shoulder safely! we immediately started doing some research on various forums, including Jeep forum, on the "stalling issue" and "lights coming on intermittently". My husband took it to our local autozone and they hooked it up to their coding scanner machine. It gave us the code to change the map sensor needed to be changed. My husband changed this out last summer (2013). It helped for a litle bit. :( then began having the same issues, stalling out while driving, check engine light coming on/off and rough idling. Husband went back and had them hook up to coding machine and this time was given the code for O2 sensor, which he purchased and changed out. Now it's worse than ever! it won't even stay idled. It stalls almost immediately! I have to keep my foot on the gas (and brake when needed) all the time! if I let it go below 1000rpms it dies! we took it to a mechanic & was told the pcm was bad. But he told us that there were recalls that may fix the issue. So we took it to a dealership who performed the recall but unfortunately it did not fix the problems. This is a very expensive "fix" to a problem that appears to have never have been resolved properly by the manufacturer!! this needs to be addressed by the manufacturer as it is a major driving & safety hazard!.
After stopping at traffic lights, stop signs or awaiting traffic to clear in order to make turns, the engine stalls but will re-fire after placing transmission in park or neutral and turning the ignition key. (I just purchased the vehicle and found out from the previous owner that the problem began during the summer of 2012, resulting in the trade-in because two different dealers could not find the problem. Dealers replaced the following: map sensor, cam and crank sensor, egr valve, cleaned throttle body, replaced the pcm, spark plugs, replaced air idle control valve, replaced battery. None of the above have fixed the stalling problem which could get one killed in traffic. ).
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that while driving various speeds, the vehicle suddenly stalled. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was found that the pcm needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number 08v203000 (power train). The failure mileage was not available.
2007 Jeep Commander limited 5. 7l hemi stalled again while driving. This time, my daughter was pulling into the driveway when it stalled and she had no control over the brakes or steering because they don't work when the vehicle stalls. She just about drove through the garage door. This is a major safety issue and must be addressed before someone gets hurt or even worse, killed. I took it to the Jeep dealership and they updated the pcm, but as soon as I left it stalled again, so I took it back and they replaced an ignition coil. As soon as I pulled off the highway on my way home, it stalled again. They want to replace all of the ignition coils which will cost about $550, and they claim this may fix the issue. I don't understand how Jeep doesn't know how to fix this issue. There are thousands of Jeep owners that are experiencing the same issue with no fix. That's all we want is a solution to the problem before someone dies.
Vehicle randomly stalls while driving it at various speeds and while parked. This time, I was going 45mph and it completely stalled. The vehicle has to be in park in order to restart it and it was very difficult to start. This is extremely dangerous since the brakes and steering don't work when it stalls. I have also discovered that there was a recall on a handful of 2008 Commanders due to a malfunctioning front control module or transmission control module. This should be taken very seriously because many Jeep owners are afraid to drive them due to the uncertainty of the random stalling.
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that the gear shifter failed and had to be engaged with much force. The failure was experienced numerous times. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic where the transmission fluid was replaced however, the failure was not corrected. The manufacturer advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign id number: (08v203000 power train: automatic transmission: control module (tcm, pcm). The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was not available. The current mileage was 104,000.
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle would not immediately restart. The vehicle eventually restarted, but the failure continued to recur. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the contact was informed that a control module needed to be replaced. The contact was also informed that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 08v203000 (power train:automatic transmission:control module (tcm, pcm)). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 126,000.
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact was able to successfully restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic shop, who ran a diagnostic test and stated that there was a failure of the transmission control system and the emission related power train electronic unit. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 08v203000 (power train: automatic transmission: control module (tcm, pcm)). The vehicle was then taken to a dealer for repair. The failure mileage was 86,000.
There are reports all over the internet about this same issue with Jeep Commanders. This needs to be reviewed for recall and is a safety issue. The check park assist warning started to flash intermittently while the vehicle was in operation. When this occurred, all gear indicators on the dash would light up at the same time. There was initially no other indication that anything was wrong with the car. Eventually, the check engine light came on and the dealer diagnosed it as needing a new transmission control module. The same events occurred within 2 weeks of installing the new module. Dealer replaced it again and said the part was faulty. The same events occurred again with the next month. Dealer was unable to find a problem and reset the computer/wiped the error. It occurred again and progressed to the car loosing accelerating power while driving and/or shifting in to lower gears for no reason. New dealer this time, says that it is the shifting control module. Review of the issue on-line shows a long history of this problem even though I am fortunate enough not to have it happen within a few years of ownership. This is a safety issue that can cause injury to passengers when the car shifts down at highway speed and/or accidents because the driver no longer has control of acceleration.
Tl- the contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph the vehicle began to lunge and not change gears properly and then stalled. The contact was informed of the recall for NHTSA campaign id number: 08v203000 (power train:automatic transmission:control module (tcm, pcm)) the manufacturer was notified and informed her that the VIN was not part of the recall. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure and current mileage was 45,000. Dt.
I recently had an issue where after driving my vehicle, going into a bank and returning to start my car, the vehicle did not start. I tried repeatedly to start the vehicle but nothing worked. Finally it started again at an auto shop and then turned off and we tried to start it again, but it would not start. The battery was tested as well as the starter. There were no issues with either or the components associated with starting the vehicle. However, after my independent mechanic starting searching for recalls he noticed there was a recall on the front control module and said to call Chrysler. I called and only 1338 vehicles were "qualified" for this part recall. My vehicle is not part of that recall but the issue at hand is the culprit of a defective front control module. Recall id # 71686 - visibility:windshield wiper/washer
summary:
Chrysler is recalling 1,338 my 2008 Jeep grand cherokee and Commander vehicles. The front control module may have been incorrectly manufactured. Consequences:
this could cause the engine to stall while driving or not to start and/or cause the windshield wipers to become inoperative. Engine stalling or inoperative wipers could cause a crash without warning.

Tcm downshifts while driving on 2006 Jeep Commander. Tcm and linkage replaced Feb 2011 to address situation. The new tcm is worse. It will downshift to lowest gear and stay there regardless of veh speed (has happened on the highway). The parking assist disable light will come on as a warning then the transmission will downshift. Stopping the vehicle and putting it in park requiredto address the situation. Vehicle is out of warranty and Chrysler will not help. Happens once a day.
While driving 65 mph on the interstate, vehicle lost power. Dash display message appeared "service park assist system" and vehicle gear display indicated the p r n d were all illuminated. The engine stayed running but would not respond to the gas pedal, decelerating. Turned on hazard lights and pulled over, placed vehicle in park, shifted to drive, and continued as normal. A short time later, the check engine light came on. The problem is intermittent, and has happened many times since then and in many different driving situations. For example, after pulling into traffic on a highway, the vehicle would not accelerate, causing the traffic behind to nearly slam into us. If acceleration had been available as normal, this would not have been an issue. Another example, the problem happened during heavy rush hour interstate traffic, causing the need to cross several lanes to reach a breakdown lane. It has happened immediately upon starting the vehicle and after the vehicle has been running normally for a long time. It is very unpredictable. The vehicle is dangerous and cannot be trusted to provide power or acceleration when it is needed. Private shop checked the fault codes and replaced the transmission control module which did not fix the problem. Internet research shows this exact problem with these exact symptoms is common and widespread in the 2007 Jeep Commander and appears to indicate a faulty electronic shifter module. Chrysler response to the problem is hit and miss, some dealers acknowledging they have seen this before, others claiming they have never seen it and the problem is isolated and not widespread. There needs to be a safety recall on this dangerous issue before someone is hurt or killed, if they have not already. We used this vehicle to transport our children and now we can't even trust it to safely get us to the shop to have it repaired.
While traveling at 40mph my 2007 Jeep Commander lost power accelerator would no respond the service park assist message came on as did the check engine light and all the gear indicators in the dash lit up. I stopped on the side of the road and after I turned the vehicle off and restarted it was fine for a few more miles and it did it again and again. Took the vehicle to my Jeep dealer and they checked it out and found it was the transmission control module and I just had to pay $1,329. 59 to have it repaired. This is a safety issue and I was lucky I was driving on side streets as in traffic or on the highway it could have caused a serious accident. The same issue happened on the 2006 Commander and Jeep recalled them and there are the same number of complaints about the 2007 why is it that nothing is being done to have them correct this.
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander 4x2. While driving approximately 20 mph, the contact applied the brake pedal twice before a response occurred and the vehicle began to reduce speed. The failure occurred spontaneously. In addition, the engine would stall without warning. The vehicle was currently being diagnosed by an authorized dealer. There was a recall under NHTSA campaign id number 08v203000 (power train:automatic transmission:control module, tcm, pcm). The contact was uncertain whether the VIN was included in the recall defect and planned to notify the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that while driving at very low speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer where the dealer advised that the electronic shift module needed to be updated. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign I. D. Number: 08v203000 (power train:automatic transmission:control module (tcm, pcm) but was advised by the manufacturer that the vehicle was not included in the recall. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 52,000.
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated the vehicle would stall when braking to a complete stop. The contact also stated that the vehicle would attempt to stall when accelerating. The contact referenced NHTSA recall campaign id number: 08v203888 (powertrain: automatic transmission control module), but was advised by the manufacturer that the vehicle was not included in the recall campaign. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer. The failure mileage was 115,000 and the current mileage was 126,000.
12/5/2011- the Jeep Commander lost all power while driving, I could not go faster then 15 mph. I took it to the dealership and they informed me, that the pcm needed to be changed and there was no recall. There was a recall on the 2006 model but none on mine (2007). This is very dangerous because the car will just lose power. I am now affraid to drive this car. I called the Jeep recall center and they were of no help and a waste of time.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Commander. While driving approximately 70 mph the vehicle suddenly stalled. The contact merged to the shoulder of the road and was able to restart the vehicle. The contact stated before the vehicle stalled it would briefly hesitate while accelerating. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. Nhtsa recall campaign id number: 08v203000 (power train:automatic transmission:control module (tcm, pcm)) may be related to the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated the VIN was not included in the recall. The approximate failure mileage was 50000.
