4 Ignition problem of the 2007 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 06/05/2011

It was a rainy day. I pulled my car in to the garage and shut off the engine. Pulled out the key and entered my house. The garage is connected to my home. I came back to the garage some time later to find the engine was still on. I ran to the drivers seat to see no key in the ignition and verified the remote engine feature wasn't engaged, it is designed to turnoff after the car door is open for a short time. The engine wouldn't shut off. I brought it to my husband, who drove it a bit and could not get the engine off. Eventually it self corrected. A truly dangerous issue since this car is parked in my home. We brought it to the dealer about 4 times, and while the engine hasn't done that again, various parts of the car turn on spontaneously. A single head light, a single brake light, all the lights. It seems the electrical system no longer has full control of the vehicle and that is dangerous. I believe my car is just one of many 2007 Jeeps that are having enormous electrical problems, my case just illustrates how dangerous this could be. A car engine running spontaneously is unacceptable and it is clear this is just a symptom of a common problem to all these Jeeps.

5 Ignition problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 05/17/2010

While driving, 06 Jeep Commander had smoke pouring into the inside from the gear shift, vents, etc. Smelled electrical. Car refused to turn off on two attempts with keys already out of the ignition. That was the first occasion for that problem. Have had several times when I was driving that the car stalls, locking up the steering wheel, etc. Have taken it to the dealership for this problem and they said they fixed the recall ???? it still stalls, sometimes three times a day. . . Which is difficult when you have several people behind you. The vehicle is at the shop now as I had to get it towed when it quit running, during the fire. I am currently searching to see if others have had this problem.

8 Ignition problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 10/29/2007

Three times I experienced power loss while driving my 2006 Jeep Commander, 4x4. The first time -- I turned the ignition to start the Jeep and it didn't kick over right away, all the warning lights lit up simultaneously, then randomly and at varying lengths of time went out. The dash lights and the radio were turning on and off. Weird, I shut it off and waited about 2 minutes. I started it again and everything seemed ok (except the airbag light remained on). As I was pulling out of the parking lot onto the main road, the dashboard lit up again, flashing on and off as before, and then a clunk-jerk -- no power steering, no power brakes, lights still going crazy. Luckily I was able to coast into another parking lot, stop safely. I turned it off, waited 5 minutes, then it started and I made it home without incident (airbag light still lingered for a while). Two and a half weeks later, as I was leaving my house (so I was going slow) the dashboard started the same flashing routine as before. I shut the Jeep off immediately, waited about 2 minutes and re-started. No further problems but the airbag light lingered a few minutes as before. The third incident (October 29th), I was driving along the main road about 40 mhp on a straight smooth section when all the warning lights began flashing on/off (OH, no!). At the first opportunity I turned off the main road and kept driving slowly to my garage. I made it there without losing the steering/brakes, lights flashing the whole way. I am scared to drive it now. The dealer is unable to re-create the problem, their only solution was to call the manufacturer, who suggests that I remove the other three keys from my keyring because their weight must be causing the highly-sensitive ignition tumbler to toggle to accessory mode. Uuuuugggghhhhhh. I am not comfortable with this explanation. I am still afraid to drive this vehicle. What should I do?.

9 Ignition problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 10/05/2007

Since purchasing our Commander in early 2006, we have experienced no less than 12 incidents of stalling. The vehicle stalled at a complete stop, as well as while driving at approximately 50-65 mpm. We also have experienced extremely sluggish acceleration at highway speed, both situations placing us at in danger of a collision. Finally, when conducting hard turns (similar to a u-turn), the engine will sputter and barely accelerate in traffic situations, several times nearly resulting in a collision.

10 Ignition problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 09/11/2007

While stopped at a stop light on 4 different occasions over a period of 2 weeks, the vehicle lost total electrical power and engine shut off by it self. The 2006 Jeep Commander restarted immediately after putting in park and turning ignition. The Jeep was brought into the Jeep service center on 9-11-2007. Service tech said that they had similar problem with another Jeep Commander in the service center and could not figure out the problem. Per the service tech no error messages were reported. They called Chrysler who told them to do a pcm reflash install per star. The car has stalled again since then.

11 Ignition problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 06/24/2007

Not so much a complaint but a statement car died while driving down the road with cruise control on due to my knee striking the ignition key, turning it back to the accessory" position as I moved my foot from the accelerator pedal to flat on the floor. This was simply operator error on my part. I' read the other complaints on engine dying, and almost didn't purchase this vehicle due to those, but upon further investigation on my part I felt fairly sure reported problems could be operator error rather than an actual electrical issue. This was only my opinion buy based on my actual life experience, the car died while going on the road was due to my own action. I will note that I had zero problems controlling the car after the engine shut off. I simply steered over to the shoulder, put the car in park and restarted it. I probably could have just as easily put the car in neutral and restarted it while coasting on the road. If others get to voice their complaints on this issue I feel I should be allowed this statement on that same type of event so that consumers investigating this vehicle can make more of an informed decision about purchasing one. Additionally, my solution to this problem was to simply move my seat back; I am 6'3" and I was simply unnecessarily crowding myself. I will also point out that we had just purchased this car 2 days ago, so still getting use to it.

12 Ignition problem of the 2007 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 06/20/2007

The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Commander. While driving between 50-60 mph, the transmission failed and the vehicle shut off. The vehicle was able to be restarted five minutes later. The contact has taken the vehicle to the dealer on three occasions. The dealer stated that the cause of failure was due to the key in the ignition, the transmission, and the converter needed to be changed. The current mileage was 13,200 and failure mileage was 9,000. Updated 03/04/08. Transmission fluid was leaking from the valve body connector area.

15 Ignition problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 01/28/2007

Jeep Commander 2006 4x4 (my wife jennifer ivester on 1. 28. 2007) in drive going down the street 25 mph, she has foot on accelerator and the vehicle dies. Full power and vehicle failure. Vehicle was stranded in intersection with cars coming toward vehicle. All the cars slam on breaks. While this is happening vehicle is placed in neutral and ignition turn back on. She quickly maneuvered across the intersection and avoided an accident. She contacted dealer and setup appointment to look at vehicle on 1. 30. 2007. Vehicle has 7k miles on it. My wife is certain that she didn't hit the ignition and cause the vehicle to loose power. I have investigated this occurrence on many Jeep Commander forums and this is happening to lots of folks. This incident should be investigated before something serious happens. Regards, rodney ivester.

16 Ignition problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 11/02/2006

Engine stall for the second time in 2 months. Occurs when turning. Engine just quits but restarts upon re-ignition. First incident happened on a highway while maneuvering around a stalled vehicle. Scared me to my wits end as cars zipped by me. Second incident today was when turning to the street from parking. Luckily no traffic. Very dangerous. Planning to bring to dealer within the next couple of weeks. Jeepforum. Com lists similar incidents.

17 Ignition problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 07/20/2006

I live in canada but didn't know who to contact up here. I have a new 2006 Jeep Commander (3000 kms). This truck has now stalled twice on the freeway while traveling in excess of 100 km/h. Both times, the instrument panel goes to zero and I lose all power to brakes and steering. The 2nd time almost caused a crash with my wife and 1 year old in the vehicle. The dealership has looked at it twice now: the first time they couldn't reproduce and the second time they replaced the ignition stating they "hoped" it would fix the problem but were not 100%. I've read all kinds of complaints surrounding this issue on various websites so there are definitely other people being impacted.

18 Ignition problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 02/01/2006

We purchased a 2006 brand new Jeep Commander for safety and reliability reasons. While my wife was driving with our three young daughters on the highway at speeds of 70 mph during the evening hours the vehicle suddenly shut off and lost all power. My wife avoided a serious accident by quickly turning. She later restarted the vehicle and drove the entire trip on the service road. The dealership could not duplicate the problem. The problem has happened several times since to both my wife and myself. The problem has now been id, it's the location of the ignition key being just above the right knee. While driving the Jeep close caution must be exercised while driving not to hit the key. Very dangerous and serious situation.
