13 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2011

I bought a 2007 Jeep Compass 11 months ago from lithia Chevrolet/Dodge/Jeep. It had 64,000 miles on it. In the 11 months that I have had the car the rack and pinion and steering pump have had to be replaced twice. At my expense. The ball joints have been replaced. My struts and brand new tires are destroyed. The whole bottom of the behicle feels like it is going to seperate from the frame. I started having these problems within 1 week of owning the vehicle. The dealership would not honor the warranty and would blow it off as me being "silly". The check engine light has been on 3 times and rather than fixing the car they just "reset" the engine light.

14 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2011

Ball joint failure. Seems to be a problem with the Jeep Compass. I have 55000 miles and have noticed the noise since 50000.

15 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2011

2007 Jeep Compass with approximately 52,300 miles needed left and right ball joints and right outer tie rod replaced at a cost of $510. Given the fairly low mileage and the fact that this auto is driven only on paved city and highway roads these repairs should not be necessary. Others have reported on the web similar repairs with ball joints/tie rods for this Jeep model -- Jeep should have a recall on this model for this defect.

16 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2011

I was told yesterday that my 2007 Jeep Compass front suspension ball joints need to be replaced. I have 49,000 miles on the vehicle. This defect could result in wheel failure. No failure has occurred yet.

18 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2010

Metallic noises emitted from Jeep Compass 2007 model front passenger's side. It would creak when turning and would frequently lose control of right side tires in adverse weather. Have fixed ball joint twice now and seemingly wears down over and over. Reviewing other complaints for this model, this appears to be the norm. A broken down ball joint and consequent cracked axis would mean a very dangerous situation: flipping off the road, losing control at higher speeds, etc. Thus far we have avoided serious injury but at less than 30k miles this should not be a recurring issue.

19 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2010

2007 Jeep Compass needed tie rod ends replaced at annual inspection at 49000 miles and ball joints need replaced at 70000 miles! Jeep will not cover them and they are the only ones who make the ball joints how convenient. Mechanic says they are only lasting an average of40-70k miles and to get rid of the vehicle. Tie rod ends have 25000 miles on them and he said will need replaced in about a year again! updated 01/13/bf.

20 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2010

I took my 2007 Jeep Compass 2x4 to have the drivers front tire repaired. The repair man found that the ball joints were bad and needed to be repaired. I checked it out online to find that many Jeep Compass owners have had the same problem and only has 41,375 original miles. This is a wide spread problem. My Jeep was purchased from a Dodge Chrysler dealer. I ask that you force Jeep Chrysler to recall this vehicle for this defect.

21 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2010

Brought my 2007 Jeep Compass in to have the alignment checked. I was told by our Jeep dealership that both of my ball joints are faulty and the car is extremely dangerous to be driving. Took car to my mechanic for an oil change. After putting car on the lift he usually does an inspection, brakes, exhaust, tires , steering , etc. When checking for play on the front wheels he notice a very dangerous play on both front wheels, more severe on the right side due to failing ball joints. Car is a 2007 Jeep Compass with 60,000 miles.

Ball joints.

27 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2010

My wife's 2007 Jeep Compass 4x4 ltd was taken to our local Jeep dealership in edgewood, MD for a routine oil change. A mechanic on duty notified us that in addition to the oil change, we would need to have the front drivers side ball joint (lower) replaced because it was "loose". The mechanic described the problem as something serious that needed to be taken care of immediately since the wheel could fall off in extreme conditions. Less extreme conditions were described to us as leading to a possible loss of steering control. The mechanic also mentioned to us that this was a common occurrence with the Jeep Compasses he has worked on. We took immediate action to fix the car to keep it drivable by having the dealership replace the ball joint the following day - safety was our primary concern. We took steps to contact Chrysler's corporate headquarters to see if this would be something they would consider replacing since our car was beyond warranty (61,000 miles) - they dismissed our claim and would not reimburse us for the work done or the replacement parts. Having done some research, it seems most Jeep models from 2007 through 2009 have been experiencing ball joint problems leading to recalls - the Compass is not yet on the recall list. A ball joint failing after 2 years of owning the car and all highway miles (no off-roading, no city driving, no bumpy roads, etc. ) just seems very absurd to us. This seems to me like it?s more of an issue with defective parts placed in the Compass than an issue of wear and tear. The consequences of a failure such as this while my pregnant wife was driving the car could have been disastrous. If the mechanic on duty is seeing this part failure in more than one Compass, it could mean a bigger problem exists, presenting a danger to many Compass owners. Please look into this!.

28 Ball Joint problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2007

I have a 2007 Jeep Compass 4x4. Shortly after purchasing it I started to hear a thumping noise in my front end when turning. I also heard a creaking noise whenever going over any bumps or hitting any potholes. The noise was consistent for awhile and then went away. Last year I had a tire blow out while driving. The left front tire blew out and upon looking at the tire- there was very obvious uneven tire wear. I looked at the right tire and it looked exactly like the left tire so we quickly had both front tires replaced with new ones. Five months later my new front tires were bald on the inside. I had to purchase new tires again and we had an alignment check to look into the front end. I was told my left ball joint and right tie rod needed to be replaced. I had the left ball joint done. I was planning to have the tie rod done within a month but I was advised it needed to be done now. After having the ball joint done my steering immediately started to pull to the right violently. I had the tie rod done the next day. This alleviated the pulling on the steering wheel but now I can feel something else. The car is not handling right and it makes me very uneasy to drive it. After doing some research across the web the same problems I am having with my Compass are being experienced by many, many, many people who bought these vehicles. I'm seeing that this is only the beginning of what is going to be a long list of repairs on this vehicle's front end. I'm really shocked that this problem has not been recalled. Tie rods and ball joints are very dangerous. They are the components of your steering and when they malfunction someone is going to crash. If everyone who buys the same car has the same problem (and it is dangerous), why is something not being done?.
