34 problems related to front suspension control arm have been reported for the 2007 Jeep Compass. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Inspection after clunking from the front of the vehicle revealed severe rot and corrosion of the subframe with the mounting for the anti-roll bar completed broken away from the subframe. Also severe corrosion around the lower control arm mounting appeared to be close to the failure point. Took the vehicle to the Jeep dealer who stated that the 10 year extended warranty had expired and that I should not drive the vehicle due to safety concerns. Found fca internal warranty document id-14-02 for the subframe corrosion issue dated 5/19/14 which refers to fca service bulletin 23-012-14 and states that all dealer personnel are to be made aware of this bulletin. I have a receipt for other repairs from an fca dealer dated 7/28/14, 2 months after the warranty bulletin date and there was no notification given about the inspection mandated under the warranty and nothing noted on the receipt. Thus there was no way for me to know about this waranty and safety issue which I am now told has expired for my vehicle. Per dealer instruction, I called fca customer care and was also told the warranty for my vehicle had expired and my only choice was to pay for repairs myself. In scrolling through the complaints already noted in the NHTSA site, I see numerous mentions of this problem with many indicating complete subframe and suspension failure with injury only being prevented by the slow operating speed at the time of the failure. This problem is a manufacturing defect where improper materials and/or coatings were used by fca on these components. For reference my 1998 Dodge neon has no such problem after 21 years as it used galvanized coating on this critical component. Fca needs to issue a recall and pay all associated costs for this safety related issue and be liable for any injuries resulting from these failures.

While driving the driver side rear wheel suddenly tilted inward so when was rubbing wheel well. Got vehicle home less than 1 mile away and saw cross member rusted completely allowing upper control arm to move.
"takata recall" every time I have to drive my 2007 Jeep Compass I am scared for my safety and the safety of my children. I have had the whole control arm and tie rods replaced in my Jeep just a few months ago due to very loud squeeking in the rear end of the vehicle, it makes the sound when driving slow or fast, any tiny movement such as getting in and out of the vehicle while not running makes the loudest squeaking sound! its like nails on a chalkboard! I already have to take it back in due to the same sound the fix lasted about 2 weeks! there is something majorly wrong with this make and model!.
I have had this Jeep for little over a year and have had to replace the fuel pump, the drive chain, front control arms and now I am told that the subframe is rusted and apparently cracked as it makes awfully load noises in the back. I have contacted a Jeep dealer to ck on the replacement of the subframe. I agree, do not buy a Jeep.

While having routine maintenance performed on the vehicle, the contact was informed that the driver side lower control arm, shocks, and struts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 144,276.
When filled up with fuel, car stalls out and cuts off. I have replaced all of the bearings and car still makes a roaring noise with the axle. Upper control arms are completely damaged. Battery light continues to come on and headlight was replaced but does not stay on. Light stays on indicating vacuum hose issue. 4 wheel drive light stays on.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Compass 4x4. While driving at various speeds, the contact heard a clunking noise followed by the sound of metal scraping the road. The vehicle was pulled over and the contact noticed that the rear control arm and cross member failed and needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 66,000.
Front engine cradle/sub frame broke in half while driving on a city street causing loss of control and damage to additional parts including rack and pinion, control arms, etc. After examination of the engine cradle/sub frame by a mechanic and myself it was discovered that the engine cradle/sub frame had rusted so severely that broke in half under the normal weight and driving stresses of the vehicle. Examination of the rear sub frame shows the same signs of rust which include numerous holes approximately 1/2" +/- in diameter. The uni-body of the vehicle has no surface rust or more severe rust located on any area on the vehicle. The rust is solely isolated on the front engine cradle/sub frame and rear sub frame. This is a very dangerous and premature failure of a vehicle.
I bought this car in 2008, it is a 2007 Jeep ( 2014 or around). We had tires wearing out, and took it in for alignment and spent around $200 to fix tie rods and alignment. About a year later went in for oil change to dealer and they said my arm control in front of car ( 2) needed replacement. I get from reading on line and just that they knew that this was a possible problem, that this was a common thing. Since it is a safety issue, I am writing this to try and get this as a recall, I paid the almost $1. 000 to fix ( my daughter, we share car) but could you look into this and see if it is occurring more then normal ( odds are it is) and what the weakness is in the control arms, and because it can so affect ones ability to control car, has to be put on a recall. The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Compass. While driving 35 mph and making a right turn, the ball joint axle detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that the ball joint axle and the control arm needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.
My vehicle, has a rough ride, traction light flashes often. I had several repairs done on my front in June 2014, (upper, lower control arms, left and right sides, rotors ,brakes and tires are always needed). On February 2,2015 my left front ball joints and control arms broke and my wheel broke off, I am currently in need of more control arm and strut repair on my right side again! my vehicle clumps and has a rough ride, I am in constant fear driving this vehicle, because of the constant issues with my front end, even after its repaired.

The contact previously had the right control arm repaired under a manufacturer recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 42,000. Djr.
My 2007 Jeep Compass had been making clunking and squeaking noises when driving over small bumps at low speeds. There was also a loud grinding noise when turning the steering wheel to either side, also happening at low speeds. I took my vehicle to a mechanic who stated I needed to replace both lower control arms and ball joint assemblies and both outer tie rods ends. It was also stated I needed a new right strut. I was advised that my vehicle was not safe to drive and I was made to sign a paper stating they had told me this. At less than 42,000 miles these are parts that should not be malfunctioning and even more importantly not endangering my life.
Vehicle made screeching sound, coming from the driver's side front wheel while travelling at about 30mph. When vehicle was parked, owner noticed left front wheel to be turned out and standing at an angle. After raising the vehicle, owner noticed that a-frame crossbar had rusted through completely, rendering the front control arm bolt hanging away from the frame. Both side's front tie rods and control arms had to be replaced at aproximately 35000 miles and 70000 miles. Both side's link tow and link rear had to be replaced at under 70,000 miles, as all bolts had rusted to the frame. New tires were purchased at approximately 35,000 miles, again at 45,000 miles and at 80,000 miles. Shocks for front were also replaced twice on both sides. Updated 06/14/2012.

Front lower control arms and tie rods have gone bad with only 67000 miles and less then 5yrs old.
Took vehicle for yearly inspection where the car was purchased, new. They were at that time a Chrysler Jeep dealer. It didnt pass the inspection due to the poor condition of the ball joints - mileage at that time was only 14,258. It was suggested I contact Chrysler to notify them. They advised me to take it to a local qualified dealership. It was taken for them to check the ball joints. After 2 weeks of not driving the car due to its dangerous condition, the ball joints and both lower control arms were replaced at a cost to me of $214. 00. The treatment I received and the amount of time it took them to decide to do the job at the "qualified dealer" was inexcuseable. I feel Chrysler should of taken care of the cost of the repair, since it was not due to anything I did but the quality of the parts installed originally. This complaint would of been submitted earlier but I was not aware of the NHTSA.
I got a flat tire on may of 2011, after taking it to a tireshop I was informed that I needed 2 lower control arms, and tire rods. There was also uneven wear on the front tires.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Compass 4x4. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for a routine maintenance where the contact was informed that the front lower control arm ball joint was defective. The front lower control arm assembly was replaced. The failure mileage was 49,309.

The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was unknown. The failure and current mileage was 39,422.
Passenger side lower front ball joint,(front was shaking while driving and had to be replaced) driver side front outer tie rod,(steering wheel was shaking while driving) both rear upper control arms. ( was not diagnosed until I was having wheel alignment done. ) but rear tires were damaged from these parts being worn. . Had to replace all these parts. Only have rear upper control arms and tie rod. Owners opinion is that factory wheels are to big for this vehicle and causing to much pressure on these parts.
What do ya know. . . . Control arm and ball joints going out at 50,000 miles. . . . Problem is your warranty wont cover and you can grease something now a days. So im out 500 bucks. One day woman is going to crash because of this issue and then will see what Chrysler does. . . Horrible! just wrong I say!.
I bought my Jeep Compass less than a year ago with 42,000 miles. Its now about 10 months later and I have 46,000 miles on this Jeep (I. E. I don't drive it a ton) I have done zero off roading and I always try to avoid potholes and bad roads. Took it in to investigate some loud noises coming from front. . . Only to find out that my lower control arms have to be replaced due to bad ball joints, outer tie rods on both sides in the front, and new brakes and front left rotor needed to be replaced. I find these problems to be absurd, considering the amount of miles on this vehicle. All of this costing over $1000 to repair. Jeep needs to stand behind their product and clearly recall these issues. I am not happy after reading all of the similar problems of other Jeep Compass owners; and it makes me even more upset to learn that most of these problems are re-occurring within 2-3 yrs. This needs to be addressed. . Orjeep will be losing my business in the future. . . Thanks!.
Last summer, I had to have my front outer tie rod ends replaced at 65,000 miles. At that time I had new brake pads installed. A few months later, I started getting vibration in the steering wheel upon braking and I also was told I had uneven tire wear. I took it to the local Chrysler/Jeep dealer; they alligned it. They never told me that the steering vibration may be caused by bad ball joints. The steering problem didn't entirely go away after the allignment; it steadily got worse. I finally took it to an indpependent mechanic yesterday and they told me I need new ball joints and control arms in the front. I also need one new rotor and the other rotor turned. (this is after I had new brake pads installed about eight months ago and the rotors were fine at that time). I was quoted $663. 56 for this work that included another allignment. I have had to replace 50,000 mile tires once at $600. 00 and two more times on the front at about $350. 00 each time. The vehicle has about 107,000 miles on it today. My complaints are 1). I drive with a two year old in the car frequently. This is a blatant safety risk that Jeep is doing nothing about. There are multiple complaints and this should have been a safety recall. And 2). , the money that I've had to spend on this car-replacing front brake pads, new rotors, ball joints, control arms, tie rod ends and tires is ridiculous. I don't have much faith in the dealership since they didn't idenitify the ball joint problem when they should have. I may never buy another Jeep product and I will certainly tell anyone that asks the experience that I have had with this car.
Took 2007 Jeep Compass in for oil change, mentioned rattling noise in front end. Mechanic found that both lower control arms/ball joints need to be replaced. Jeep only 3 years old and guess what warranty expired! total repair costs ~ 700 dollars. No recall as of yet, but there should be considering countless other Compass owners are experiencing the very same problem.
Front end would shake when coasting at 40 mph. Took the car in to the dealers with 44,179 miles and they told me I needed to replace frt lower control arms left outer tie and rt inner tie rod cause they were all worn out. So they replaced them all. All new parts and $1034. 00.
2007 Jeep Compass with 41,000 miles. Took it in for oil change and to investigate clunking noise in the front end. Mechanic discoverd left and right side lower control arms/ball joints badly worn. Cost to repair. . . $900.
Took 2007 Jeep Compass in for oil change. Mechanic said that car was dangerous to drive as ball joints and control arms needed replaced and were so loose that they may cause accident. Because of cost of repair, took car to Jeep dealer for servicing to get a second opinion. They confirmed that the ball joints and control arms do need replaced and that they are dangerously loose. Car is unsafe to drive. Repair estimate is $935 although I'm trying to negotiate since this seems to be a defect with the car.
Loss of control where the car jerked as if I had hit a patch of ice (in the spring with 50ã‚â° weather) anytime I steered to the left. Have had the ball joints/control arms replaced 4 times since.
I have a 2007 Jeep Compass 4x4. Started out with banging noises coming from the front. I have replaced both struts (38000 miles). Noise was still there, found out that I needed a right front tie rod and lower control arm (45000 miles) replaced. A few months later I am now hearing squeaking noises and rattling. Just found out that I now have to have the left lower control arm replaced. Like all the other complaints that I have seen, the problems that I am having are the exact same. This is not right!! the car is under 50,000 miles (all highway) and should not be having these kinds of issues. I have never run into this with any other type of vehicle that I have owned. I think this needs to be investigated before something awful happens. My mechanic tells me that he sees alot of this with the Compass and patriot models. Jeep used cheaper parts to make the vehicle affordable. Great, except the consumer will not buy another Jeep product after this. I know that I won't. They need to own up to this and help it's customers with the repair issues. There are too many of them and they are all identical. Please investigate this issue. Severe safety issues going on here. I don't know how people can do business like this. Thank you.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Compass. While driving at any speed, the contact heard a rattling sound coming from the front end of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the outer driver's side tie rod and control arm needed to be replaced. The failure still persists. The current mileage was 53,800 and failure mileage was 6,762. Updated 09/11/09 updated 09/15/09.
